Building PVC Track for a Homemade Rideable Train

  • For the last six months, I've been tinkering with a rideable train for my nieces and nephews that would live at my parents' house in Georgia. I've finally gotten it to a place where it operates consistently. I'm ready to start laying the track.
    In this video, I give an update on how I got the train to this point and show how I build the track out of PVC pipe and wood.
    Stick around to the end to see me test the top speed of the train. EEK!

    What is your wheelbase like the width of your track? I’m trying to decide if I can hack a go kart frame and I have a wider one and the skinnier one. Thanks so much love your project.

    If you want to make curved tracks, just stake the inside rail down in the desired shape, then use your template to screw down the other side. The geometry of having 1 side longer will force it to keep its curved shape when you remove the stakes and pick it up.
    Although this was posted a year ago, so I bet you figured something out by now

Keep it up while trying to keep the cost down and keep the rest of us informed with more video when you get the chance. Just curious though, how you gonna work the corners? You can "soften" the pvc with a heat gun so maybe that will help.

    Make at least one set of wheels (a set of wheels on a train is known as a truck) rotate, so it follows curves. Also, put an angle on the side of the flange that contacts the rail.

    • @koreyokeene

      Like what the dude above said cuase as it stands right now your engine is to long for any sharp curves. Other wise forget about bend your pvc pipe track. Pvc will flex a little bit on its own without any heat and that flex just might be enough for your current engine to traverse the curve. But much smarter to building a truck for the empowered part of yer train engine.

    You might want to consider adding a ‘limit switch’ near the end of the track. This would prevent running off the end of track. It would take two main pieces. The electric switch on the loco which when ‘tripped’ will kill the power to the motor. And an ‘arm’ of sorts near the end of the track to toggle the switch to the open/off position. There are various switch styles available online, and the activation arm can be anything you cobble up that will trigger the switch.

    Definitely can empathize, as I'm working on something very similar to this, and there's a LOT of trial and error involved.
    Making curves isn't too hard, you just link the pipes together into a circle and use your track gauge to keep the spacing right as you secure the rails to the ties. The more pipes in the circle, the wider the curve will be when it's finished.

    • @JeremiahDaws
      @JeremiahDaws  4 роки тому

      Shipwright1918 I can’t keep the train on the track. It hits the curve and jumps. I’ve been researching conical wheels and such the way train wheels work. But it’s a little too advanced for me. Haha.

    • @Shipwright1918
      @Shipwright1918 4 роки тому +1

      @@JeremiahDaws
      It might be that your flanges are too short, the actual disk needs to be cut about an inch larger than the wheel itself for the flange to grip the rails.
      It also might be that the curve is too tight for your loco to negotiate, try lessening the curvature and see if that helps. Barring that, you might try taking the flanges off your middle wheels to make them "blind", so the loco can negotiate tighter turns, it's a trick both real railroads and model railroads use.

    • @Shipwright1918
      @Shipwright1918 Рік тому

      @HostileAuthority
      The wheels on the pivot are called "pony" or "lead truck" wheels. They're not powered, but are there specifically to help guide a steam locomotive through curves, as are any wheels on a pivot behind the driving wheels, the "trailing truck", they guide the locomotive around curves going in reverse as well as supporting the weight of the back end of the locomotive.
      Not all locomotives had lead/trailing trucks, it should be mentioned.

    I know this is a year later and you might have already figured this out, but blow torches and heat guns will help, but just don't char it. Run the torch/guns along the length of the pipe until slightly bendy and put into a jig (plywood and some long screws set following a pre-determined curve) to cool. This would be a 2-3 person job. I don't see any other videos on this project in your channel. Please update us!

  • @andymanaus1077
    @andymanaus1077 3 роки тому

    Hey great job. The most important thing in engineering is "it works". I'm a backyard inventor from Australia and had a couple of suggestions:
    Bending PVC pipe with sand is quite easy once you make the wooden formwork to lay the pipes in. You need two forms, one for the outside track and one for the inside. You only need two caps per pipe and they just need to be taped on, nothing fancy. You can decide on a curve radius and just make all the curves to that radius so that you only need to make two forms.
    When you do the corners, the tracks need to be slightly further apart than they are on the straights.
    To create the forms, take a garden hose and lay it on the ground to get a rough idea of the curve radius you want. Then use a string pegged into the ground on one end and position it so that the other end follows radius of the garden hose. Tie a marker pen to the free end and trace out the curve onto plywood pieces. Do the same for the inside curve by shortening the string by the width of the tracks. As I'm sure you know, the rest of the process is covered in numerous online videos.
    For the unit with three pairs of wheels you need to take the flanges off the middle wheels. If you don't, they will jam up the moment you try to go around a corner and may well rip one or more of the flanges off. Rubber wheels on PVC have a lot of friction and you might have to consider changing to plastic or steel wheels. The wheels need to skid slightly in order to go around corners smoothly, especially if you haven't included a differential on the drive wheels.
    I've subscribed to your channel and I'm looking forward to seeing the next instalment. Cheers!

    Looks like a lot of fun! For the curves (or even the tracks themselves, I suppose, could those be made of wood with roundovers on the top if the "tube" portion of the track is important? Regardless, I was thinking that you could do some sort of bent lamination to achieve the curves in the track, though it would be a heck of a jig since I'm sure you'd need several feet to achieve a safe radius for the train. Great job as always, though!

    I give you a lot of credit on your overall design and execution for your actual train build I would keep it simple at first try building the first prototype out of cardboard and tape when you get the look you are going for you will be able to use that cardboard as templates to mark out onto whatever you are going to build the actual train out of I’m guessing plywood, FYI you can bend or manipulate PVC piping with any heat source you can buy a cheap propane torch wand from Ebay and use a 20lb barbecue tank it’s not necessary to get all involved with heating sand although the sand could help prevent kinking on thinner pipe I would try using some trees and a harbor freight come along that’s under 20 dollars The buck or form idea is good if you had to make lots of the same parts , but I’m assuming you are more making a one off track on your parents property with only a few turns and radius parts ? I would be inclined to think you might be able to bend those in place maybe even using some metal pipe to “Spike “ the tracks in place black pipe and electrical conduit are usually the lower priced choices
