What a good and practical video! 谢谢!Just a small correction, my country 哥伦比亚 is written Colombia, not Columbia.

Thanks for correcting, William. Colombia is a beautiful country. 😊
@@EverydayChinese 谢谢!
Thank you William, I did not notice the U-O distinction in this word. So it seems Colombia is the name of your country, while Columbia is for some cities/towns in the US. Is that right?
@@darkerhippo5852 You are totally correct!
This video is very interesting and awesome information in Chinese mandarin explanation. thanks
Extremely useful video on names of countries.
美国。The countries that incorporate 国 are easier to remember.
Gavin But what about the Ateji?
And, out of curiosity, what about the USA made those who agreed upon the Sino-Japanese names for countries call it beautiful?
@@cyndie26 I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on those topics. I'll have to do some reading.
Gavin Ateji is when they use Kanji characters based on their sound alone to write a word. As Chinese doesn't have the Kana system of Japanese, they are forced to use Ateji far more often to write foreign words in Chinese than in Japanese, but Japanese also has a few examples. How often is this used?
@@cyndie26 I'm not sure how often phonetic transcription is used. I need you as a teacher.
Gavin Beyond what I know about culture, linguistic structure, and some aspects of how Kanji are used, for practical purposes, I only know one sentence in Japanese: 私は日本語が話せません。("Watashi wa Nihongo ga Hanasemasen."/"I do not speak Japanese.")
But Japanese may be, for some reason, an interesting language to learn (especially if learning Chinese, or at least the Onyomi (Sino-Japanese as opposed to native Japanese) pronunciations of the Kanji, comes with it for free).
My recommendation is to find a resource of some kind to help you learn, but I'm not sure how you'll learn thousands of Kanji characters.
This video combines two of my favorite things: Geography and the Chinese language!
Just wanted to tell you how happy your videos make me :)

I'm curious about how Chinese students write paper in last 10 minutes with so long characters
Well 1 character conveys more meaning than 1 letter of an alphabet usually. Plus they learn the stroke order to most efficiently and cleanly write each character. Not sure if there's much difference in how long it takes to hand write out a paragraph of speech.
Its quite easy actually and it also saves more space on the paper 😅
Honestly speaking, the difference is unnoticeable.
It’s just like writing English papers I guess, gets more messy and incoherent towards the end due to panic😅 it’s like writing a particularly long English word

Russians seeing their name added a vowel(“俄”) that having nothing to do with the original pronouncation is as shocking as Chinese hearing they being called "契丹(qidan, kitai)in Russian.
OK, but for different reasons.
Calling China Qidan is a sign of the influence of an ancient nation in north China 1000 years ago, while adding a vowel before Russia is for easier pronunciation, although I don't find it easier.
@@darkerhippo5852 the additional vowel was from Mongolian ,they usually add a vowel before name start with "r",so Russia(罗斯)become O-russia(俄-罗斯) . But some adjacent names to Russia, like Kiev Rus,is still called"基辅罗斯”there is no “俄”, because these words are directly import to Chinese without influence of the Mongols.
@@darkerhippo5852 And China called kitai was the influence of qara kitai empire(西辽) established by one of the Royal members of fallen Kitan empire (辽)which you `ve mentioned.qara kitai ruled the central Asia for one century and once defeated the Seljuks so that they have mede very deep impressions to the Christian world. Because kitans have already accepted the Chinese culture, they are always considered as Chinese by people from nomand tribes of asia and east Europe.so finally kitai become the formal name of Chinese in some Slavic languages.
