Weird Leo Sayer story. Back in 1983 I was making my first trip to the US with a mate, driving from Denver to San Diego. We landed in Reno one night and the Casino we stayed at had Leo as the Star Act in their dinner theater (I miss those). Because he was not a big hit in the US we somehow got seated in a booth right under the stage, about 6 feet from Leo’s piano. We got a personal performance of all of his hits and a lot more, amazing bit of serendipity ✌️
I was a high schooler when this song came out. If you turned on the radio, this song was playing. THIS is what the mid to late 70's sounded like. There was just so many songs as good as this coming out. It was a great time, and I knew it was special. Glad to have you guys connect...
I was just a little younger, but my elder brothers were teens, and mom listened to the radio all the time. Reminds me of mom making breakfast and packing lunches, dancing just a wee bit. The ride to school.the 1970s were my child hood, the 1980s my teen years.
I was working at the Manor Hotel in Yeovil, Somerset in 1974 when Leo Sayer and his band played at the new concert hall in the town. After the soundcheck he and some of the crew came into the hotel bar for refreshment. In the main our customers were local businessmen and retired workers from the tannery in the town. He sat and talked to the old guys about their lives and then bought them all a drink. Lovely man.
This song was written by Ray Parker Jr. He's mainly known today for the "Ghostbusters" theme song, but he was a much used session musician in the 1970s. Then he started his own band Raydio. Y'all should check out Leo's twin brother Richard Simmons, lol. (Just kidding, they're not related 🤣)
Wow, great info, never knew Ray Parker Jr. wrote this, thanks! His song "A women needs love", is also a great one. Lastly, haha, you totally had me fooled on the Richard Simmon's twin brother comment cause they do kinda have the doppelganger thing goin on. Lol
I had forgotten all about Long Tall Glasses. Had to go look it up and DAMN! if couldn't still sing 90% of the lyrics even though I don't think I've heard it for 50 years.
🥰🥰🥰 I love this Leo Sayer song. I also love "When I Need You", "More Than I Can Say" and "Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)". He did a duet with Roger Daltrey called "Giving It All Away".
Leo Sayer became a bit of a national treasure in the UK - quirky fun artist and was very artistic in his presentation. His first seven singles in the UK all reached the top 10. Try 'The Show Must Go On', Moonlighting, When I Need You, How Much Love - and there are plenty of others to dive into
Glad you enjoyed Leo Sayer....I hope you give "When I Need You" a try....a falsetto ballad. If you were to ask Leo or Barry who their rock & roll falsetto champion is, they likely would say Frankie Valli, lead singer of the Four Seasons. You have not visited them awhile and should give "Sherry" a try. It was their first #1 in the very early 60s and features Frankie hitting some impressive high notes!
YAY! Someone finally reacting to Leo Sayer. THANK YOU! Hopefully you guys have started a trend because I don't see many UA-camrs checking out his music, which is a damn shame. When I was a kid, I would see Leo on different TV variety shows of the 70's & early 80's. My first reaction when I saw him perform was 'Ok, who is this little guy?" He is a tiny fellow, about 5 foot 4 inches but OMG, he can SING! My favorites - When I need you & More than I can say. Please check those out soon - live performances are better, as he is very animated. Welcome aboard, youngsters! Thank you for playing Leo Sayers, I haven't heard this song for few years. I bought the album with this song on it back in the early 80's.

One Man Band, Orchard Road, When I need you, Moonlighting, .... Leo is a treasure. And his album Another Year is full of amazing deep cuts. A lot to love. Please keep on exploring, thank you ❤❤
It’s just fantastic when you discover these artists that you guys have no clue who they are and then when you hear them surprise surprise great reaction guys Leo Sayer just great!
Leo Sayer does quirky, pop, rock and ballads, he can really mix it up. My all time fav is Orchard Road. Thunder in my Heart, Moonlighting, Have you ever been in love the list goes on. He first came on the scene dressed as a clown singing The Show must go on, the rest is history
Leo Sayer did this song on the Muppet Show dancing with a bird twice the size of Big Bird ! Leo Sayer was incredibly popular back in the day, that's why we still know about him now. Made me Smile, Again.
When I Need You was my intro to Leo Sayer; closely followed by I Can Dance, and More Than I Can Say. Our teacher let us listen to the local rock radio station while we did our practice sets in high school accounting class. Lots of great songs and artists.
Leo Sayer is one of the best artists from the 70's, with his incredible versatility and great vocals. You should definitely take a listen to "Orchard Road" among so many others he did. This is an artist to explore some more.
My sister loved Leo Sayer😄She had this 8 track and she wore it out😆This song and “When I Need You” were the two he’s most known for The latter shows his soft side in “stellar” fashion! I was definitely right up there as being one of the best “slow dancing” romantic vibe songs of the seventies. The women loved it 🥰😂 It’s even got some great sax 🎷 for Amber as well! Y’all love it ✌️🫶

I have been listening to the 2 of you for a few months now. I have enjoyed watching your music knowledge and appreciation grow by leaps and bounds. The joy you show in your new discoveries makes me smile. Your observations have helped me learn more. The main thing is that you make this 67 year old man feel young again. Thank you for that.
Leo is British but now lives here in Australia. He loved the place so much that he moved here permanently! I used to dance to this in high school for jazz ballet class. I remember every step. I grew up with Leo's music and has appeared in every Aussie music show. He's 75 now and still performing. Guys you must check out, The show Must go on and Thunder in my heart
@@pennychurchward1481 oh definitely! I think I was in year 8(or 2nd form as we called it back then) in 1975 when we did dancing for sport. We had school discos too. I remember we all did the Nutbush City Limits 😁
I never heard this extended version before, I love it! Jay & Amber, I need to repeat what surlechapeau said, "When I need you" and "Long Tall Glasses". When I need you, is a slow ballet, I think that is the best way to describe it, and Long Tall Glasses is a quick fun song.
Sorry, I had two more strokes in the past three weeks, leaves cognitive skills and spelling abilities all over the place.. Jay, Sherry, by the Four Seasons, yikes!
"One Man Band" is my Leo Sayer go to tune...many childhood memories of my parents playing it on vinyl and walking around the house singing it when I was a kid...
Yay, it's great to see Leo come up! May I suggest 'Orchard Road' as another great song sung by Leo. Great story telling lyrics. The words and melody are lovely - really paints a picture.
This was a song to dance to with your partner. You started with a slow dance, and then your progressed to fast. This song remains amazing even after 50 years of it being around. The classics never die! Keep going, Rob Squad! You have an awesome groove!
Leo was playing at a concert hall in our city when this song came out. My now spouse took me to see him as one of our first dates. Always brings back such nostalgia. THX for playing this one.
Seen him live twice, first time was 1993 and the second time was last November when he was aged 74 and every bit as good as he was 30 years previously. Everyone remembers him dressed as a clown for his first hit The Show Must Go On in 1973, but he had many more great tunes after that. Giving It All Away , Thunder In My Heart, One Man Band, Moonlighting, Long Tall Glasses and Dancing The Night Away.....all great tunes.
The most famous falsetto voice of all time was Frankie Valli of the Four Seasons. Songs to explore " Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", Walk Like a Man," and "Candy Girl" .
Welcome to the 1970's!!! This song takes me back to my first duty station in the NAVY. We had a young guy who worked on the base (we had students that would get summer jobs there). He did this song in his high school senior talent show. He would walk around the base singing it and my roommate and I both got a big kick out of it. I am always happy when I am watching you two!! I love when young people discover our music!! It lives on through you !!
Jay & Amber, I am so glad you enjoyed this song, I love this Grammy winning song and I was too young to enjoy this song on the dance floor, I wasn't even 10 yet. Leo Sayer has got that falsetto for sure, but there are some of his songs that are also good and DO NOT have his falsetto voice. Some have already suggested "Long Tall Glasses (I can dance)" That's a simple upbeat story telling song with no falsetto but a good song just the same. There's piano, drums and bass guitar in this song as far as I can tell unless someone can fill me in on any more that are used in that song. "When I need You" is another beautiful song by Leo Sayer, a gentle song actually with no falsetto. I hope you enjoy more of his music with or without his falsetto singing voice. I enjoyed your reaction and looking forward to more! ☮💕
I haven't thought about Leo Sayer in so long and then - boom - here he is on the Rob Squad - another artist who was one of the really big shining stars of the 70's - and he deserved it - what a voice !
Long Tall Glasses was the first song I ever heard of his. Three Dog Night covered his song The Show Must Go On. When I Need You was a huge hit but he was taken to court where it was proven to have the same melody as a song by the great Leonard Cohen.
My favorite Leo Sayer album is his 1973 debut album "Silverbird". Early in his career, Sayer performed in a pierrot costume. You should check out his early performances in full makeup such as "The Show Must Go On" or "Innocent Bystander".
1977, six years old but could already sing along to this song’s chorus, riding around in a brown Datsun light pickup with my uncle and cousins … that was the good life.
“More Than I Can Say” has to be the next Leo Sayer! Also “When I Need You” is on the soft side but another very popular if not his most popular Leo Sayer song.
Ah yes. Leo Sayer was iconic! So many great hits in the 70's. I love 'How much Love' by him, really funky & yes, that Falsetto is certainly present! Thanks for a great reaction!
My favourite song by Leo, and i think because of the falsetto ... I thought there were two singers apart from the back up singers... I had to see a video live to realise it was all him. He has other great songs but you won't hear the falsetto there : More than i can say and when i need, you are great.
”When I need you " Is a good Leo Sayer song to check out
Great sax solo in that one
Incredible song and I know they would love it.

I've been meaning to recommend Leo Sayer for a while!

I feel a thunder in my heart & when I need you both worth listening to ❤
I haven't thought about Leo Sayer in so long and then - boom - here he is on the Rob Squad - another artist who was one of the really big shining stars of the 70's - and he deserved it - what a voice !
I was thinking about Joe Jackson and they didnt have a damm.Sad!!?
Long Tall Glasses was the first song I ever heard of his.
Three Dog Night covered his song The Show Must Go On.
When I Need You was a huge hit but he was taken to court where it was proven to have the same melody as a song by the
great Leonard Cohen.
My favorite Leo Sayer album is his 1973 debut album "Silverbird". Early in his career, Sayer performed in a pierrot costume. You should check out his early performances in full makeup such as "The Show Must Go On" or "Innocent Bystander".
The show Must Go On is my favourite of his!
1977, six years old but could already sing along to this song’s chorus, riding around in a brown Datsun light pickup with my uncle and cousins … that was the good life.
Leo Sayer is amazing.. One of his famous is "When I Need You"
More than I can say. Is another great song by him.
Must agree when you need me live version shows just how good Leo Sayer is
One of those songs that for real makes you feel like dancing! 💃 🕺 Always makes me smile.
He has other great songs but you won't hear the falsetto there : More than i can say and when i need, you are great.
oH dear god!! You two are about to listen to the song that got me into dance. Leo Sayer and those "Solid Gold Dancers"
The song was written by Ray Parker Jr. You've reacted to Ghostbusters, but he had many more hits as a solo artist and with his group Raydio.
