The Wonderful Elephants of Mashatu Game Reserve. ‪@MashatuGameReserve‬, set in that eastern corner of Botswana where it meets with Zimbabwe and South Africa, is home to one of the largest (if not the largest) single population of African bush elephants on privately owned land and what an incredible place to spend time with these giants of Africa.
The African bush elephant or African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) is one of 2 extant African elephant species - the other being the slightly smaller African forest elephant. It is the largest living terrestrial animal, the bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to just under 4m and they can weigh as much as 10,4t.
They are social animals, moving through the bush in herds composed mainly of cows and their progeny. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups, loosely following the herd as they move. They feed on grasses, creepers, reeds, leaves, and bark consuming some 150kg of vegetation and around 200l of water per day.
