Meet Duster, the 89-year-old Umbrella-Crested Cockatoo

- Calvin Coolidge was president, flappers were shocking folks with their short dresses doing the Charleston, and former first lady Barbara Bush was born. And so was Duster, the Umbrella-Crested Cockatoo! The year was 1925. Today, Duster is living the retired life, but decades ago he was quite the performer, right here in Tampa Bay.

This bird is older than my grandparents. Damn
Bsh This bird is older than my great grandmother...
Bsh same
She's only 9 years older than my dad. Who is now 83.
Bsh Lol me too
This parrot is older than both my great grandmothers.
I guess birds don’t really age - he’s still beautiful
yeah, parrots can live along time, even more so in captivity as they thrive as well cared for pets.
ive seen cockatoos live to be damn near 100.
Most Macaws do live for quite some time...and many Macaws have been known to live 70-85+ years... Cockatoos in captivity and in general live to around 40-60 years, which is one thing that makes this one so unique...
Some smaller birds of the parrot order live around 30-40 years, and others.. such as the blessed Cockatiel, usually live up to around 15-20 years.
Cockatiels are relatives of the Cockatoo. Both species are in the Cacatuidae family, so I assume that there are behavior traits that may be similar in both. Cockatoos remind me of toddlers (in the general sense), when I watch them play on UA-cam. Emotionally and intellectually, Cockatiels are a lot like human babies (and I mean literally), but then some of their behaviors and emotional responses can seem like that of a human who's a little older. (Birds are individualistic, as well as very social...so, they each have a their own will of preference, as well as abilities....such as a degree of self awareness.)
Unlike us humans however, Cockatoos and Cockatiels don't "grow up" like we do...They age in different, but similar ways physically... Emotionally is another story. My little babies are going to stay terrifyingly rambunctious and painfully cute, till they transcend to the afterlife....lol...😆😆.
The oldest kaketoo was 120 years old
Birds do age, but you don’t see it physically that I am aware of. I have a cockatiel and he is 13 years old in bird years, making him about 55 years old in human years. He was recently diagnosed with slight arthritis.
Rick, I don’t find that funny at all. I have an aging cockatiel and had a scare with him a few weeks ago. So, aging birds are something that bird owners take seriously.
I have an old man as well...my oldest umbrella is in his 90's.
Fully feathered and adorable.
I have a galah thats in his 90s. He is fully naked. Sometimes they lose a few feathers and sometimes they lose all at that age. . Hes still a cutie though!! In the winter ive knitted him little vests to wear :)
that is the most adorable thing I've ever heard of
Gala's only live until like 40 though right?
Ghost Spore absolutely not. They are part of the cockatoo species and they live just as long. He was my grandmothers bird and was already 30 by the time she got him. Now that shes passed he is mine. He is much older now and still doing great!
Beverly West come on. We need videos of that! More birb videos are needed!
Oh my god, I’m actually really surprised to see a cockatoo who has lived that long without plucking! He must of had a wonderful life! I respect those who cared for him so well!
I own 4 Umbrella Cockatoos and not one of them has ever plucked. They only pluck out of boredom or neglect.
@@Alex-zp1nu I agree. If someone can't spend a lot of their day with a bird, it's probably better to get two, so they can have each other. A parrot alone for much of its day tends to become neurotic, they're very social animals.
Does anyone know what's the equivalent human years of a Cockatoo?
@@annitagalvan9049 cockatoos live as long as humans if not a bit longer. A happy well cared for one that has had a good life could reach 90-100 years old.
@Ally Trudie thank you for replying. I'm a dog mother so I don't have much knowledge about cockatoos, but this is very interesting.
Amazing they can live that long. Which makes me think they should never really be pets as they will almost certainly outlive their owners.
Yes, that is a real issue to consider. Make them a part of your will.
I have heard from owners that the birds become very attached to them, so passing them on in your will is necessary but still very hard on the birds.
Greg Egan they actually can live more than 100
That's a myth, cockatoos are extremely unlikely to live more than 70 years or so. The average is 40 or 45. The one in this video is most likely not 89 years old, and there are no confirmed cases of them living to 100.
Greg Egan j
The bird was born in 1924. What the hell has this bird seen? I just talked to a 75 year old co-worker of mine and he told me a story of how when he was 10, a hermit that lived by himself in a shack was like 80 something and he let some kids warm up there when they were skiing. Dude was born in the 1870's. Time is a helluva thing.
*_Here's hoping she makes it to 100._*
he, dang it!
@@lolbots he did??
@Bruh Fu really?
its a he
@Bruh Fu No lmao
This is why you have to research what bird you get. You want a ten to twenty year commitment? Budgies. Twenty to thirty? Cockatiels (although they can get older than that with good care). Thirty to fifty? African Grey (cute bois). Always remember, it's not a pet, it's a life in your hands.
Dakaria Meldown yes these birds you have to put in your will as they will most likely outlive you. My blue fronted amazon will be 31 this January. I’ve had him my entire life and he is older than me. My mom adopted him at 10 weeks old in 1989.
African Greys can live to 80-90 aswell.. Think the record is 108?
What if you die lmao
Thirty to fifty for African greys? Haha i think ur joking... They live between 60-80 and even 100 if properly cared for
all pets are a life in your hands, parrots are just exeptionally long lives in your hands...
as far as i know Parrots and tortoises are the only two pets that have a good margin to outlive thier owners.
Just another example of how birds being taught tricks is not cruel...they thrive on it! The key is to make sure they always have a variety of activities to play with and plenty of human contact. We are their flock, and ignoring them is the cruelest punishment for them. Love your babies, keep their brains engaged and active, and they will have a good and happy life.
My bird is 18, and believe me, that's a long time to have a pet this demanding.I love her, and take her with me all the time, but I have to admit, if I had it to do again, I'm not sure I would. They don't make good pets for everyone, in fact, I'd say if you have small children, or work long hours, forget about a bird!
Yeah it stimulates them
WOW really nice comment.
I think you have a bird am i correct?
I would like to invite you to cockatoo luck family. C u soon.
I just got one a few days ago, my best friend had "Peaches" and she didn't have time to take care of her. My friend was trying too sell her. after about three months I told her if I had the money I would take her. She said you can have her. I always wanted one and am thrilled too have her. She is a sweet heart. She knew me before she was given too me. I am retired and have all the time in the world to spend with her. Am looking for videos on how too teach her a good vocabulary and do a few tricks.
@@jakejr4 - what type of bird Tommy?
So nice at 89 years old, he still has robust feathers. Very much cared for .
89 years old in 2014 and somebody said 3 years ago that this cockatoo died.
Mine asked me for a kiss , I kissed his beek , he bit straight through my lower lip very badly , laughed and asked for another kiss.
yeah, it was probably more like "Go ahead, I dare you to kiss me. Try again"
Sydberg 》yep*
why did he do it? did you piss him or her off, was the bird too young and not understand what it was DOING?? I bet you pissed it OFF by giving someone else attention,,, he saw it, asked u for a kiss, which to him meant come here, then he bit you, then wanted to do it again or make up or check to see if you got the message...they are smart ANIMALs, no one can get that through their heads, just like how unbelievable it is they have HUMAN life spans, imagine if dogs and cats lived that long,,, so , they are smart and by the time a dog or cat is dead they are just starting adult life and using all they have learned ..so, it was DOING something, for some reason not just BEING retarded.
Joel Weidenfeld Could have been a rescue bird that didn't trust anyone that had been previously abused
Joel Weidenfeld
Goddamn, you need to shut the hell up. This assumption is absolutely ridiculous. How can you gather that from one comment? I hope you never get your hands on an animal in your entire life.
Actually I knew a young man in his 20's that got a parrot. The first thing he did was head on down to his lawyer to have a codicil having the bird and care of him placed in his will so he would be safe. I remember being surprised. Then he told me how long lived they are and that barring some illness or accident there was no doubt that even tho he was in excellent health the chances were good that the little guy would out live him by many years. You got a parrot you better get that will looked at.
Mine is in my will
Etta: Excellent advice
Then he married and had children. Gave the bird to a rescue because the noise kept the little darlings from napping. Amazing how a person's life changes and a parrot no longer "fits"
@@tracimetcalf3374 Bro you don't even know this person are you projecting or something?

Sad news today Duster has passed.
😢 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🦅
We will all mourn “him” having seen so much of our history and sharing love and joy along with roller skating and riding the bird bicycle.
God Bless you Duster where ever you are...
That's sad!
Dang it
I'm so glad that when i went into the comment section i didn't see a comment like "RIP" first time in a while
RIP Duster
So I got a little lost, Duster was said to be a girl by the current owner and a boy by the previous trainers... Duster is adorable regardless! I am going to love on my darling cockatoo when it wakes up.
Fayn so did I like wtf?
That's an umbrella cockatoocome from Indonesia not Australia
Duster is an umbrella cockatoo we do not have them in Australiathey come from Indonesia
I have a feeling the old trainers never bothered to sex her.
Just look at the color of the eyes. Cockatoos are easy to look at and tell sex. From here the eyes look dark brown which would be a male. Light brown or even with a reddish cast would be the female.
He really deserves the best life ever since he made so many people happy in the past. Such a wonderful intelligent soul ❤ Glad he's in good hands
My guy is 39 this year... I thought he was doing well! Gratz Duster!!
They can live up to 100 years old if you take care of him!

Wow 10 years ago!!! I hope he is still living if not, rest in peace little legend.❤
Whenever you consider getting a bird like that always keep in mind it is a lifetime commitment.
There’s a macaw at the bird store near me that is 100 years old. His name is Pedro and he has a great spirit!
birds are sooo smart they know exactly what they're doing haha
It's fantastic that these birds live as long as humans.
So adorable!
What a BEAUTIFUL bird! And so deserving of the good life.
Good to know someone out theres taking care of him.
Good girl.
when i was 12 i went over a friend's house and when i saw his parrot i said "oh my god, what happened to that bird?" my friend replied "he's 80, that's what happened" LOL. duster, on the other hand, looks not a day over 40. amazing
Report makes a mistake: Umbrella Cockatoos are not native to Australia; they are native to rainforests in some of the islands of Indonesia (which is a few hours North of Australia)
targettman Does that mean this bird could not have been born (hatched, rather) in Australia? Maybe it was bred in captivity there.
@@s13rr4buf3 umbrella cockatoos in captivity in australia can be bought for upwards of $6000 because of our strict wildlife import export control. The likelyhood of this bird being born in australia is 1 in a million.
Hehe I knew it lol, Australia is home to Sulphuric crested cockatoo
@@silvern3268 as well as the bare eyed cockatoo and one of the world's largest breeds of cockatoo, the moluccan cockatoo (although I heard someone say moluccans are from the rain forest)

Glad she has someone like you to take care of her!! Sad that hollywood just seemed to abandon the sweet bird.
+violet petals ... i hope they realized that the bird had more than earned his retirement and let him go to live in a real home. i am not sure teaching tricks is respectful to animals. they can do a lot without being trained, and birds like this can learn simply by watching and mimicking.
+nowvoyagerNE Teaching them tricks keeps them entertained and mentally/physically active. Parrots especially enjoy it because they are highly social and easily bored. They'll actively seek out new tricks to learn, or invent new ones, to keep their skills up. Same goes for many other creatures: various forms of "trick-training" have been proven to reduce stress in captive animals and keep them healthier, both mentally and physically. Captive animals with this kind of enrichment are shown to exhibit fewer stereotyped behaviors, no self-mutilation, and less abnormal aggression than animals that are left completely free of human contact. It should be noted that I am NOT referring to circuses or similar cases; those force the animal to perform. The trick-training done by parrot owners and zoos uses positive reinforcement only; if the animal decides they don't want to do that trick, they're allowed to just walk away or the trainer asks them to do something else.

It's a He not a she, she recognized her error if you read some comments.

Thank you for highlighting how long our big Aussie birds can live for and the time you have to put in too them

My grandma has birds all her life (me as well, I have a amazon named Henry) and she had her cockatoo for 73 years! It’s amazing how they are so much like humans!

i like to think this show just how calm, happy and enjoyable this bird life was.
Love hearing happy endings about long lived parrots. So many aren't given the chance to be so well adjusted.
Thank you for taking care of this beautiful creature! My wife & I are down to her last bird she hatched. A wonderful Cockatiel male named Patrick. He's (we are guessing) 22 now. Keeps me company daily in my work office.
WOW I remember seeing Duster when I was a little girl how amazing the resilience of our animals on this beautiful planet respect them people as they were put here my mother nature for a purpose just like we were! A beautiful purpose :-)

What a beautiful bird.
Update: Duster recently passed away at the ripe old age of almost 100.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
What? Somebody above you said Duster died 4 years ago. I'm confused.
The tragic thing about these lovely birds is they will always outlive their owners. Please have a plan in place for someone loving to take care of your bird when you pass on.
Today he would be 95 years old, I hope he’s still alive and doing well !!! I wonder who had him for the first forty years or so of his life, he’s a beauty and would love to have him !!!!!
How wonderful to adopt this special bird !
0:47 So that's why she's still that full of energy.
All that rollerskating and bicycle riding has kept her young in body and spirit, lol.
Incredible!!! My bird is 33. She is amazing and willed to my daughter our vet said she’ll live to 80 to 120 yrs old. We got her when she was 2 days prior to two months old a hand fed very smart talkative middle aged bird. She is 100% a part of our family. She calls me mom. She’s smart and a Yellow Head Amazon. Very smart and I could not imagine my life without her. I made her a companion pet so she is licensed and will always be permitted to live with me and my daughter. I own a home so no one can tell me otherwise but prior to that I had landlords that tried to not permit her only in the past 5 yrs. Prior to that most landlords felt a bird wasn’t a pet because they have their own homes. But if you allow them they could destroy moldings and such. My bird Billie has been trained to not do those things. I really am great full to a person that has taken in and bonded with a bird that has likely seen many owners in its life. You are a blessing to all birds. I thank you.
I salute you Duster the fluffy and cute cockatoo and great woman that takes good care of Duster.
OMG HE LOOKS SOOOOOOO GOOD
My umbrella cockatoo Cleo is only 6, shes probably going to outlive me.
Make sure you give him plenty of money in your will. As well as to give him to someone in the family. So they don't live in a shelter.
Not that they can't live that long, but on average, they live 25 or 30 years. Given my birds pension for coke, and sweets, she's in better health than I deserve!
+Leo Roberts Nah. Cockatoos are more 40/60. Eclectic etc. are in the 30 range.
but they love doritos
Leopard Style - That is ridiculous. A 9 or 10 year old child can NOT take properly care of a cockatoo! It is challenging and difficult for adults, many end up having to be rescued because adults can’t deal with them... Adults have to get them (adopt), and make plans for their care when they can’t care for them anymore, so they don’t end out in a shelter.
Mines 16 and couldn't imagine life without him.
This bird was alive to witness World War II.
@The Great Hawk Duster was in the Cockatoo battalion. He was part of the first wave in Normandy, his task was to take down the Nazi Eagles.

Umbrella cockatoos are native to Indonesia. There are other cockatoo species endemic to Australia (sulfur crested, rose breasted, and more), but not umbrellas!
I was thinking the same thing! This bird rescue woman thinks it's from Australia? Probably not even 89
Actually due to the explosion in bird trade they made it to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also, there is a wild population of these that have been in South Florida since the 90s due to escapees and naive releases.
Very nice to meet Duster. Bless his big heart. WOW !!
I didnt know cockatoo can live until 80 years. I thought their longest live is 20 years.
Thank you for this knowledge
The small parrots max age is about 15-20. The big ones can reach 80-90 quite easily.
My husband and I had a Cockatoo back in the 80's and he was a sweetheart but he was an escape artist too. When he would get out while we were at work he chewed up the entire back out of our new sofa one time and another time he chewed the corners of off my husband's wooden Bose speakers. Cackatoos just need a LOT of attention. We had to find him a new home, but I wish I had him back now that I'm retired. I still miss him. 😥
dude, we need a reunion! I want the old trainers to meet Duster once more.
Wow, truely amazing! Now ninety-two years old and a gorgeous bird! Hopefully, still alive! What an amazing story! Love and hugs from Florida!

89 years, no wrinkles, no gray hair, no body shake, perfect balance, perfect memory.. What do we do wrong?
I remember going to the Weeki Wachee in Florida during a family vacation in the 70s and seeing the bird show and the water ballet. Its funny that im now 58 and discover one of the birds that performed. I have 7 species of birds in my home now, most are rescues. . Im sure the bird show had some influence in my love for birds. 😀
Is it a girl or a boy I'm confused. One owner calls it her and the other he.
he is a boy his got dark eyes like my boy cockatoos.
@@Shiva-un3kx ...no
doesn't work like that
Welcome To Trench Hi... Respectfully speaking, it generally does work that way with cockatoos. If they eyes are dark (almost black) they’re male, if a visible shade of brown then female. My cockatoo was too young to sex when I got her and when I noticed her eyes looked brown when the sunlight hit them, I said oh boy, I bet she’s a girl (which was good because I’d been calling her Cleo). Then when she was old enough to be blood tested, during one of her physical check ups, it indeed turned out she’s female. Anyway, maybe it’s not 100% accurate, but it is generally a good indication of sex. HOWEVER, in the case of Duster, I personally do not believe that the sex can be determined by this video as I feel we’d need to see him up close and personal and have some sunlight shining on him so we can closely examine his/her eyes. 😉 Anyway, hoping you have a blessed and happy new year! ✨
@@Tranquility32 i thank you for being respectful, but I still kind of disagree
do you have any sources other than your cockatoo? just because yours followed the rule, doesn't mean it's a general thing.
the only 100% way to know is DNA testing, or obviously if the bird lays an egg
@@blazedbat bruh it says it on google and do you have any proof that it DOESN'T tell the gender of the bird?
So good to hear of one which is actually living to a sensible age in captivity!
The lady says , "its good to know someone was out there taking care of him" , then the owner gives Duster a kiss and says "Good Girl!"
Some people go by eye color to determine a parrot's gender, but that's not always accurate. For 17 years, Einstein the Talking Texan Parrot's owners thought he was female. Only when they had him DNA tested did they discover that he was male. (In some of their older videos, they tell him he's a "good girl".) Perhaps that was the case with this bird - that it was thought to be male but was actually female. Just speculating. :)

Very hard to sex most birds unless there are color differences or they lay an egg.

Hey does anybody know what the longest living Quaker parrot is? Mine is 34 about to turn 35.
Wow, Duster is leaving quite a legacy. Amazing cockatoo! 🕊
the new owner says "she" and "her" about Duster, but the old owner calls it a he.. what is it?
+Nova Smith they may not know, its not easy to tell gender with birds because no sexual organs are visible, most people have them DNA tested to determine gender
+Nova Smith I'd say a he, most cockatoos that I know of have the distinctive physical trait of having differing eye colours between genders. Or in other words males have black eyes females have brown
+Nova Smith black eyes its a male
+Getbent97 female cockatoos have red eyes.
+Irish Eyes That isn't a reliable means of sexing an umbrella cockatoo. Only way to confirm is through a DNA test. There are enough females with dark eyes and makes with light brown eyes that you can't be completely certain without help from the vet.
Really sad capturing this baby ! But thank goodness he has a forever home !
