Unironically I am watching this and commenting on my Surface Duo. Terrible phone, great tablet. I got it for about $400 but it was ridiculously overpriced for what it was at launch.
US justice system is really strange. Google that gives it Android OS for free, must share all App Store Apps with alternative stores, but Apple that earns hunderds of billions on iPhone, that has everything locked needs not?!?
The issue is that all android phones operate with the google play store not just pixels. For apple, only their phones have the App Store. It’s different so the decision makes sense.
Microsoft just doesen't know how the free OS upgrade works, they only sell their devices with 1 OS and you need to buy the next OS on your own money.. menwhile others selling the device and even 5-8 major OS updates are already included..
Microsoft Duo was attempting to convince you that you should not agonize over the folding seam but enjoy two screens side by side. MS does not even consider helping or pleasing the user because, well, the users are there to be used.
I have a Zenith radio from the 1930s, It still worked long after Zenith ceased to exist. This trash we have now where every product has a kill switch the manufacturer can flip at any moment is not progress.
7:26 I was gonna comment something along the lines of "how can they move away from linux when presumably they're gonna be using the linux kernel" but after looking it up apparently harmony os next is running its own proprietary microkernel that is posix compliant and fully ABI compatible with the linux kernel, maybe they're actually cooking something here. Unfortunately it's proprietary and probably gonna be trash outside China.
I wish Samsung would pick up the Surface Duo form factor. This type of foldable should be more robust than the folding screens of their current devices
I know a guy with a Fold 2 that he dropped like 500 times and is using it daily since it came out (4 years ago) and still works perfectly fine and its still very updated and smooth. People who break samsung foldables are very not careful at all
I don't understand what's wrong with Microsoft and why they continue to make so many poor business decisions. Major examples include exiting the smartphone market and their slow transition to ARM architecture. I feel like if it weren't for Windows and MS Office, they would have gone bankrupt long ago. (I’m aware of their cloud business, but that's a different story.)
Dumb question: Why are Android updates so important? If the device still works, what harm will come in maintaining a device with an older version of Android?
Two things: a) lack of security updates means your Android phone will be vulnerable to malicious software of any kind; b) newer versions of apps won't support your Android version rather sooner than later, which means you will be missing out on features. My friend's Honor's camera app, for example, is not able to scan QR codes (bought in 2018).
For the updates, I think the last major Android version can still support most of the play store apps up to 3 years, and then little by little it becomes unusable.
More than 50% of Android users are still using Android 12 (released in 2021) or OLDER. Obviously you'll eventually want to update but the apps can still be updated and OS exploits are not as common (especially in more recent versions) so you'll probably be fine as long as you don't go to sketchy websites and/or download lots of stuff from them (or have lots of sketchy apps installed, but that's bad for the latest version of Android as well). Those who scare you about OS security vulnerabilities usually can't tell you a specific example of actual old-Android users being compromised *because of* the lack of OS updates.
Depends how much risk you're willing to put your sensitive data to. Think of it as a percentage. As it gets more outdated, the risk of being vulnerable to attacks (manual or automated) as new exploits are discovered increases. Android security updates as a separate thing began after the Stagefright bug made news with KitKat after all.
Google (and Apple) should really be split up. UA-cam could become one company, search another, ads a third, Android a fourth etc. Same with Apple. iPhone could be sold by one company, Mac by another and software services (Apple TV etc) by a third one.
I really really wish all these antitrust cases against big tech win. We need more competition like in the early days, not just five or so companies dominating the web and general tech consumer space.
