  • As promised last week, here's my assembly and flight review of the E-Flite P-47 Thunderbolt Razorback. This is a nicely engineered model that goes together really quickly and flies great! This was the bind and fly version which includes SAFE Select and so we touch on that as well. I'll be doing a separate video on SAFE Select as part of my "from the bench" series. Great evaluation! I really appreciate your in-depth analysis. I too struggled with the CG on this bird and kept thinking I was doing something wrong as I was adding so much weight with a 3S battery. Your analysis convinced me to add whatever weight is necessary and now the plane flies like a dream! Going forward I'll only use the 4S batteries as I'm flying full throttle most of the time. Keep up the good work! Love your videos.

    I really enjoy your videos and analysis and you have impressive pilot skills. I recently purchased one of these as I like the airplane in general and the 1.2 size is just right for transport. I'll be going 4S as well and might even get the airbrush out and try some weathering as well. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Chris just started watching you reviews, I bought a second Horizon P47 and took it out for my first flight.
    You were spot on with the CG as Im using a 3 cell 2200 battery a real bugger to get the plane to fly level , I wished I had watch your review before I flew it .
    Your review was very helpful , so 3 ounces of weight will be added , not a fan of the receiver not nearly as flexible as the FRsky receiver.
    I will be switching the stabilizing system off as I don't need it.
    Thanks for a very helpful review , you got straight to the point no mindless keep the good work up

    Great review! Would you recommend this as a transition/next stage plane for me...going from Delta Ray to Apprentice S 15e to Opterra to a warbird? I kinda like the SAFE especially when I'm in over my head.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  7 років тому +2

      This P-47 is a great next level airplane for sure and with the SAFE it will help keep you from getting into trouble. That said, the key to effectively using SAFE though is to not solely rely on it as SAFE does affect the feel of the airplane flying around. So, use it for those critical moments like takeoff and landing maybe and then consider not using it when flying around. You can always flip it on if you get into trouble. Oh, and this airplane is quite high performance on 4s, so just keep that in mind. It would allow you to work up to a higher performance aircraft.

    Afternoon quick question considering I’m a new pilot and will be assembling a few of my Eflite warbirds they all are 1.2m the T-28 Trojan, P-47 Razorback and the P-51 Mustang. I see they have provided the D/R however no Expo Rates, once again I’m a beginner pilot and want to set up the High, Mid and low D/R and Expos in my NX radio for the Maiden what setting would you suggest? Thanks 🤙🏽

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому

      I’d recommend setting up my recommended throws from this video as your mid rates and then setting up 15% higher and lower. That being said, I don’t recall what the percentages were in the setup for this model. So, you may find what I have is set for 100%. If that’s the case, then set them as your high rates and set two lower rates for options.

    Hi. I received mine today and I'm excited to fly it tomorrow. I noticed that you've used 4 cell batteries. Has eFlite changed their recommended battery? The manual only lists 3 cell as an acceptable battery. You've answered several of my questions so I want to thank you.

      Eflite hasn’t changed their recommendation necessarily, but when they sent me this airplane, they sent me both 3s and 4s packs. So that gives you an idea of their thoughts on that.

    I'd Like to update people with any problems with the bind process into SAFE Select mode. If you are having trouble enabling SAFE and are also having trouble assigning a switch via the sticks inward and toggle switch 5x way. I found that at least for 8 channels you can go into the channel assign menu to channel input config and assign AUX2 to whatever switch you want and it will enable SAFE that way.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому

      That is correct, whichever switch you assign to SAFE needs to be assigned to a channel to work.

    Hello, as this plane has SAVE select on it it should be easy to fly. On mine I’m a bit wondering if it’s normal when activating SAVE the elevator goes down a bit and aillerons slight in right turning position......is this normal?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 років тому

      The change in the elevator position I would expect as safe select schedules the elevator based on throttle position. The aileron sounds like a trim difference. You probably just need to set the trim at the SAFE select off position.

      @Thercgeek  5 років тому

      Thanks! In the air, both fly fantastically. The ground handling is better with the p47. However, on 3cells the t6 has better overall performance than the p47. The 47 really needs 4 cells to really fly the way it should.

      @@Thercgeek Hi there and thanks for your advice. Ive got no 4s lipos at present but i do have a large quanity of 3s 2200 batteries so i think i may go for the AT-6. Ive been flying model aircraft since 1986 and in all of those 32 years most of my planes are engine powered. It has just been in the last couple of years that ive started flying electric and i enjoy it as it gets me in the air a lot quicker , I still love the sound of a four stroke engine though. My favourite electric plane is the Multiplex Twinstar but ive never owned an Eflite model, so this will be my first. I really love warbirds and my favourite is a B-17 that i bought recently which has a wingspan of 74 inches. The Eflite P47 appeals to me more but as you say its more suited to 4s than 3s and also the ground handling is better with the AT-6. So i think i will get the TEXAN. Ive had that plane since 2011 and its a great flyer. This Eflite P-47 Thunderbolt will be the first ive ever had so im really looking forward to adding it to my Hangar. Awesome vid as always, I'm plan on buying this plane as my first war bird....I utterly trust your experience and skill but why would Horizon make a plane that isn't balanced properly and you have to add weights to the battery? or is this a common thing?
    The 3S battery I'm thinking to use is 80g lighter, than your E-flight 3S, would I have to use more weights?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 роки тому +3

      Thank you! I think it'll be a great choice as a first warbird, it's a fantastic flyer! Regarding the battery, CG is CG, so if you're using a lighter pack, then I would expect you'll need to add additional weight to get the CG where it needs to be. With scale airplanes, the shape is predetermined, so that constrains things a bit (nose weight in a warbird is not uncommon). In the case of electrics, we have the option to make that weight functional with higher capacity should we choose. That said, I'd highly recommend 4s, the airplane flies so much better with it, gets longer flight times, and doesn't require nearly as much nose weight.

    The P47 was also a heavily armored plane which allowed continued operation after being hit by gunfire, which payed off but did slow the plane down a bit, a trade off.
    I have wondered about the weight. The real plane came in at 10,000 lbs empty up to 17,500 loaded. Would a Moki 250 cc be enough to power this plane if it were made of a light metal instead of foam and plastic?

    How did it taxi on the ground in a turn? I know it’s been a while since you made this video so I don’t expect you to remember. The reason I ask is because I own one, and it seems to make wide turns for a tail dragger

    • @Thercgeek

      Taxi was no problem. Are you using SAFE? That tends to limit some of the travel. Otherwise, try binding with SAFE on and then assign SAFE to a switch and then turn SAFE off that way. Some of the SAFE airplanes seem to limit the rudder travel when binding with SAFE off, but when turning SAFE off with a switch, it'll give you more travel. I've seen that on a couple models.

    • @matthewchapman3507

      Come to think of it I haven’t tried that. I have turned the rates on high but I don’t think I’ve turned the SAFE off with it on the ground. I’m still a beginner and this is only my 2nd warbird, so I have SAFE assigned to a switch to help me on landings. I’ll try that, thanks!

In terms of size I’d recommend taking a measurement off of the model tire and ordering something similar in size. I don’t have this p47 in my hangar anymore, so I can’t take a measurement. @@Thercgeek I replaced stock tires with Robart tires on my E-flite P-51D mustang 1.2m and F4 Phantom II. 2.75" and 2.5". Both work great.
      The Robart 2.75" fits the P-51D rim perfectly(should fit the P47D 1.2m as well. They have the same wheels). Just need to cut off the inner circle of the Robart tire and they slide right on the stock rim.
      The Robart 2.5" fits the F4 Phantom. It needs some glue since the rim sockets are wider than stock rims. Also, I cut off the inner circle to fit stock rims. put a washer on the gear door at each side so it wont get in the way of the wheel.
      BTW I used Dubro superlite 2.5" for my FMS P40B 980mm and ArrowsHobby P47 980mm. the Robart wheels would be too wide to fit these two smaller birds. I cut of rims come with Dubro superlite. Then slide tires on the stock rims for both planes. These stock rims from FMS and Arrowshobby are one-piece rims. So you will have to push them into the tire. Those 2.5" tire will fit perfectly with your stock rims when you cut a tight circle around the Dubro rim.
      Hope this could be helpful for folks want to switch their wheels.
