    I had a Parkzone T-28 in 2009. It had a 44" wingspan. The Parkzone brand was part of Eflite in those days. My T-28 came with an Eflite speed control, motor and servos. I flew it on 4S lipo for years with the stock motor and speed control.

    my first duty station was VT-3, The Red Knights, at Whiting Field, Florida. We flew Trojans. They were basically an engine with a pilot strapped on....10 foot prop, and huge radial engine - 12 cylinders as I remember......it was the first truly aerobatic air frame that students flew. They spent a lot of time in formation flying....about half the students were Vietnamese...

    I hope they do a 2.0 to all their 120mm Warbirds. I had the first gen of that plane, it was a 3S plane and not a lot of fun. I put in a $30 Hobbywing Skywalker ESC and put it on 4S and it flies amazing now. Should be similar in performance to the 2.0, minus the smart features. To be honest, the plane runs extremely cool, I could have likely run it on 4S on the old ESC. I've tried different prop configurations, it seems to fly best with the stock one. Also of the best flight times on 4S with any of my 120mm Warbirds. The only weakness I've noticed is the plastic servos on the rudder, they strip easy, will likely replace with a metal one.

    I owned the previous version and it was a great plane . I was naughty and I would use a 4 cell 2200 in it , and boy !, did it wake up. The only issue with this plane is there is nothing really new . Yes theafdef “safe” but you don’t really need it for this plane and telemetry, again you don’t really need it . I would have preferred lights , upgraded landing gear with compression and a more aggressive scheme …. That’s my 2cents

    Horizon has definitely come a ways with their models. I agree with you on limiting elevator throw. I had the original and with full elevator, it was easy to overflare for landing. I had my original issue one at the field last weekend, all I kept getting was "How did I get one already?" I upgraded it it, with an oleo front strut, and a really nice light set. Navs, beacons, and strobes. I am a bit shocked they didn't add nice oleo gear to the model. Its all it REALLY needed. The rumor mill thinks it did get a gear upgrade on the re-issue. Heard it several times. I actually got a ride in a real one couple years back, owned by a friend. Love the T-28. I can fly the original version 8 minutes on a 2200mah 3 cell. Well engineered model. Now I understand why it was discontinued for a bit. I always recommend this model for the transition to a complex airframe (FLAPS, GEAR, LOW WING) for new RC Pilots.
    Oh, and and old crusty guy (KNOWS EVERYTHING) at my field says the T-28 wasn't a war bird...North American fully equipped the T-28 with hardpoints, and it has been used all over the world as just that. South Vietnam lost many in combat against the North. I know a rotary wing Pilot who flew for the South, he told me they were always assigned to attack the Norths armor, many being shot down in the process.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Рік тому

      Expo is there to help tune the desired feel around center mostly. I’m not big on it personally while others I know like it quite a bit. It’s all about personal preference. I generally default to no expo and will add in some if I feel if I find the maximum rates feel good but still a little too sensitive around center to my liking. If the 30% feels good to you, then that’s all that matters. However, if you find it tends to respond non-linearly, maybe try a little less.

    Your opinion would be appreciated: I am about to get started with rc fixed wing. I do fly IRL, so I already know HOW it all works with a real stick/rudder/throttle (and retracts, flaps, mixture, constant speed prop, lol). But, I have no experience devoping "the touch" (not to mention the brain/eye/hands orientation) for flying in 3rd Person perspective. My gut tells me I really should start with the Aeroscout RTF. My question is: would you consider this T-28 to still be a bit too hot, even in full dirty configuration, to learn rc flying?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому +1

      Well, I do think the t28 could be used as a trainer. However, the aeroscout will be overall more forgiving to learn on. I do recommend getting connected with a local club and seeking out some instruction. It will help you in the long run and they may actually have a trainer that you can learn on to start out with.

    thanks for the review mate. I enjoyed your P39 and P47 reviews alot and they're what convinced me to buy them since you loved them so much. this T28 does seem faster and more agile is this the case? I think these are the same motor so would you consider just putting a 60amp avian ESC in the p47 and fly it or would you add the T28 to the hanger?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому +1

      The t28 has a pretty incredible speed envelope and is more forgiving than the p39. The p47 is a really good one too though, but I think the t28 slows down more. Honestly, it’s really in what you’re looking for. I don’t think you can go wrong with the t28, but the p39 and p47 are pretty darn good airplanes.

    I ended up buying the Trojan and had a few flights on it now. could you remember what flight times you were getting on the 3200 4s spektrum? granted I'm using a 50c and yours is a 30c but it should be similar to me at 5 mins throttle time mostly using the upper end of the power most the time. I watched a review on this by someone else and they said they got 13 mins or so. 5 mins sounds right in comparison to my other 1.2m warbirds. also does your battery meter on the TX dip quite a bit after take off then goes back up? the planes full throttle speed seems to drop after some hard fly bys too. Its my first time I used smart lipos and thought the battery meter would've been a bit more like a fuel gauge slowing dropping. cheers, Mark 🇬🇧

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому +1

      I get 5+ minutes flying the model hard. If you fly it around pretty slow, I could see getting 13minutes actually. It’s pretty efficient and will fly quite slow with the flaps down. On the voltage readout, it’s simply taking a reading from the packs. The individual cell voltages will vary depending on the throttle. Higher throttle means higher current which means more voltage drop. I’m guessing that’s what you’re seeing.

    You always do great displaying your planes! How would this compare power-wise to the 1.2m Mustang or P-47? I have the Mustang and I am thinking about upgrading to the 70 amp Avian Lite ESC that comes with this plane. How long is the battery cable from the IC3 connector to the ESC itself? Finally, what is the difference between the normal Avain ESCs and the Avian Lite ESCs? Thanks!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I haven’t flown the p51, but I’d say the power on 4s is similar to the p47 on 4s. On the esc, I think the primary difference is that the lite version doesn’t have the heat sinked case which makes it lighter. I think most all of the functionality is basically the same otherwise.

    Chris, have you any plans to see how this T-28 flys on a 6S? If you look at the specs on this AVIAN lite 70A ESC, it takes 3S-6S. The next question is will the 850kV motor handle it.

It's ~0.5oz heavier. I had to place the battery way stern which makes only 2 of the Velcro straps available for tiedown because the one close to the motor is out of reach. My Commander 1.4M mPd has a much nicer battery compartment setup than this T-28, but it will suffice.

      @Thercgeek  2 роки тому

      Well, I don’t have any experience with the previous one so can’t say related to the retracts. I didn’t see any issue there, but I only ever fly from asphalt. That said, if someone lands nose wheel first (I.e. doesn’t flare at landing), I could see it getting into trouble and hammering the nose. It lands and flares super nice though, so it should be able to be avoided.

    Have the yellow 1.1m T28, not really sure it’s going to be much of a difference between that and this model, besides the flaps and retracts. A bit on the expensive side too, 320 for the BNF. Not sure it’s worth the upgrade.
