Top 6 Best and Worst Single Stage Pokémon

- Evolution is a cornerstone of the Pokémon franchise, however not all Pokémon share in this and some of them remain unchanged their entire lives. Some of these non-evolving Pokémon are great; however others are a bit of a let down (which is a huge understatement) so which ones of these standalone creatures are the best or worst of the lot? Let's find out!

it is very cute so i'll keep it when i get one
I'd argue that the reason dunsparce keeps coming up when people talk about pokemon that could use an upgrade is there is a lot of potential. Not it being bad.
Exactly
yup, the second I laid my eyes on this thing as a kid I thought please have an evolution
True, it’s bad of course but it does have potential.

I’m pretty surprised that Unown and Delibird aren’t on here, as they probably are the weakest 1 stage Pokémon with Luvdisc.

Magneton: "Let me call my grandpa."
Are we not going to talk about the amazingness that is Hawlucha?
Hawlucha, and aerodactyl, and dracovish, and maybe even something like togedemaru
Tauros too
No
Unfortunately not, I guess. Hawlucha is such a cool Pokemon, and is the only Pokemon to have a move that is "Dual-Type", as in, dealing super-effective damage to two sets of types.
I may be wrong, but Flying Press is the move that can deal the most super-effective damage in one form (not counting hidden power, judgement, etc.). On the flip side, while it deals super-effective damage to 12 of the 18 types, it is resisted by 7 others, and doesn't deal any damage to Ghosts.
But I would say that is a pretty good trade-off.

Yo pincurchin is actually pretty good. Electric terrain with rising voltage and zing zap. It can set up hazards then memento, it has pretty solid attack with decent defenses as well
Its not that great since it has low hp and its generally a predictable lead, so you can sometimes eq it right away
true true the hp is pretty miserable, but to be fair I don't think I've ever lead pincurchin. Usually it's a late game switch for me to set up terrain and then immediately memento into regieleki for the cleanup

Unfortunantly its galarian which reduces its usefulness.
Stonjourner boosts his allies attacks by 30%. He’s also got a good speed stat and a massive defense and attack stat. He’s not all useless but should be exclusive to doubles.
70 speed is not that good
@@rorymoore9269 I know I thought he was faster my mistake
@Rory Moore stonjourner can learn moves which increases its speed.
Yeah, I think its ability is super neat. Granted, I usually only play singles, but still. It’s a nice option if I choose to do doubles.
That ability is not nearly good enough to justify using it in doubles imo.
Dunsparce has tiny wings because the Tsuchinoko (the fat chupacabra of Japan that it is based on) was believed to be able to jump twice in the air. Hah, Japan DID invent the double-jump. The drill is because, well, it's a friggin snake. They burrow. Also, I like to believe that Stonejourner uses magnetism inside of its stone main body to always keep its limbs in a close radius. No matter if the legs can disconnect, they are always connected via magnetism.
“Look at its dumb face” & “It’s just a big nothing” 😂 🤣
I was disappointed my favorite Pokemon Hawlucha was mentioned but not on the Best list. I feel like this can/should be a multi-part series.
It could be a series for sure, and while I can acknowledge that Hawlucha is pretty strong, it's not my favorite so I just couldn't bring myself to put it on there...

@@danielschultz96 dracovish is ugly tho, so it’s disqualified
Stunfisk might look derpy but that's the point, plus Stunfisk is surprisingly viable, so it shouldn't be in the "Worst" category since it's surprisingly strong.
I also disagree with Lapras being labeled the best. It's funny, he talked bad about Basculin for not having anything standout in it's stats (even though it's attack and speed are higher than the rest), but yet praised Lapras for having well-rounded stats, even though not a single one of those stats is even good by today's standards. It's not exactly a powerhouse of a Pokemon, and it hasn't been for several generations now, not to mention the fact that it being an ice type is considered to be a bad thing by most, so that holds it back noticeably as well.
@@matthewkuscienko4616 we all know the only reason Lapras is on this list is due to its Gigantamax form which turned Lapras to a mediocre pokemon to a top dog in competitive. he should've specified that because people could(and have) take that the wrong way.

Okay good list but you are sleeping on Basculin and Pincurchin
-Even if you’re not all up for Pincurchin’s design you gotta take into account the great combination of Rising Voltage and Electric Surge along with it’s amazing utility moves such as Curse, Sucker Punch, Spikes and Toxic Spikes, it’s not the #2 worst by far.
-Basculin’s abilities actually makes it better than Simipour, Adaptability and Rock Head bring enough punch to Basculin to do so.
Don't forget reckless. Thing hits like a train

Disrespecting Dunsparce like that smh. I mean you're not wrong but thats my boy

Fun fact: before my “friend” stole my platinum version, I had to Rotom thru my adventure and it literally filled any role I needed.
Im not sure how much I agree with this list. But I enjoyed the concept of the video. =)
Basculin's Adaptability with Liquidation and Aqua Jet actually works pretty well with Band. Strength-wise definitely better than the other ones you listed.
I still remember back before Sun and Moon came out that I thought Crabrawler would be a single stage pokemon, and that Komala would evolve. Imagine my surprise (and disappointment) when it turned out to be the other way around.

First of all, on behalf of Dunsparce: how dare you.
Secondly, man I wish people would stop underrating Basculin. Get the one with Adaptability and have it be your Cut/Surf/Waterfall/Dive bot. At some point, you'll chuck it out expecting very little of it and then see the lil' punk just start wrecking face. It's fast enough to outpace most in-game enemies and does irresponsibly high damage for something that's only using HM moves. Give the fish a chance and it'll carry more than just you.

My Favorite Mon almost made the number 1 entry on the best list and this makes me happy.
It's a good one for sure!
Same dude! I love that thing, talk about an unsung hero
did i just find a fellow heracross fanatic? oh boy
I really appreciate the choice of music playing in the background!
Looking forward to seeing this video remade since several of the listed ones now have evolutions. 😃
I thought unown would make it for #1 worst. Maybe too obvious?
Pesonally I think Basculin is just ok, and I don't really have any strong feelings towards it, but I once found a random shiny Basculin through fishing while I was bored. Kinda disappointed that its shiny looks almost the same, but I kept it anyway because it was my second shiny ever
I'm glad that Lapras is #1 on the best list though. It's my favorite single stage Pokemon and my favorite gen 1 Pokemon
Yeah, I similarly found a shiny Qwilfish; it is disappointing but it is a shiny after all, so you gotta keep it...
I find it really funny how I'm playing ultra sun and ultra moon right now and I literally caught a shiny Sunfisk 🤣
The tem tem slander is greatly appreciated
I like stonejourners design it’s cute and mysterious, I really wanted to use one in my play through before I found out it was super duper rare.
Shoutout to Spiritomb too. I love that single stage, great lore, interesting typing and reasonably rare.
Great video though Cubone! 👍
There's a reason why Cynthia uses a Spiritomb.
Great video!
While Luvdisc gets a lot of crap, (and I'd sure never have one on a team either) I've always appreciated it. If only for the encounter on the route to Ever Grande...I loved seeing this new tropical fish and it made the last city feel special and even more exotic.
Absolutely love Heracross ❤️ I wasn’t sure you were gonna add her but I agree, Lapras is the absolute best 😆 Love the ice typing, it’s worth the hassle and you’re right; she’s the ultimate Pokemon in so many ways, she could be as symbolic as Pikachu ⚡️ Nicely done 🔥
I like the energy you put when saying "and well see you around NEXT TIME!"
Emperor Cubone: "Lapras is the best single stage Pokemon."
Hawlucha and Dracovish: "And I took that personally."
Unpopular oppinion: stonjourner is one of my fave pokemon of shield and sword- its so cute XD

LMAO! I love how done you were when talking about Stunfisk. You sounded so pissed at the fact that you even had to talk about it that I lost it lol
I honestly really like Galarian Stunfisk, just because I've wanted a Pokemon based on a Bear Trap for so long.
Dunsparce is feckin amazing wtf
Way back in gold and silver, I trained a Dunsparse for hours to get it to evolve. Pre-internet days were a rough time. RIP me
I trained a kadabra, graveller and machoke to like lvl 60 because I didn't know they evolved by trade...
I used a Ditto to copy any evolved/trade exclusives. It was the only way I enjoyed these exclusives without a trade option.
@@alfredgomez3128 fr
I thought Pinsir evolved into Heracross if you leveled it up
LMAO
I would definitely love to see a "Best/Worst Pokemon that used to be single stage." And you could include regional evolutions.
Torkoal was always one of my favourite Pokémon, he’s such a tank and can sponge hits like anything. He got a lot of love in his home region with Flannery having one as her ace, and Ash grabbing one for his team in the anime.
14:20 LAPRAS TEETH
The idea of the “dunspruce” pun actually seems really good. Making a regional variant for my region that evolves by friendship into Dunspruce.
I have a soft-spot for single-stage Pokémon, so choosing to watch this video was probably a bad choice, but it’s certainly well made.
Dunsparce has a pretty funny lockdown type of set with Glare and Headbutt spam. You can get a pretty high chance of the enemy not being able to do anything with a combination of paralysis from Glare and headbutt flinching with Dunsparce's ability Serene Grace. Its cheesy but can work.
I would love a gen 5 remake that adds some evolutions to its own pokemon, I like the idea of different Basculins with different abilities for both version, but if it had an evolution it could be amazing, like if the evolutions were similar but not the same but still being the same species that could be really nice
PD: I expected you to talk bad about my fav 1 stage pokemon, Sigilyph, but you didn't. That was surprising if you ask me.
Emperor Cubone, do a list of the top 10 Legendary Pokémon that you would like to see get Regional Forms
Hmm, that could be interesting. I might just do it...
Here's mine: none.
I think regional reforms for Legendaries are the single worst thing about Sword/Shield. If it's a *unique, legendary beast*, it shouldn't have a flock of different regional varients
@@puddlel1ama327 True. Same for starters.
Great video.
What's the music at 6:00? I know its from Hoenn but i totally forgot about it, its awesome!
Do one for best and worst way to evolve Pokémon. My number 1 pick of worst is trade evolution
Hmm... That could be a good topic too.
Don't forget whatever is going on with galarian yamask. Like what?
No, trade evolution with a hold item (or for a specific target in the case of a certain pair) is obviously even worse than a standard trade evolution.
Especially s helmet and karrablast
Until Corvinight came into existence, Skarmory was a simngles GOD. Utility and bulk, with a bit of offensive set up with curse and swords dance for something unusual, too! Even after the new bird became a new staple, Skarm still is doing incredible, pretty sure it instantly dominated and got banned from UU, and can still function really well in OU, just for the first time it has real competition.
Yep, and it didn't even need a Mega or Gigantamax form gimmick like other Pokemon from Gens 1 and 2.
Skarmory is mainly good defensively, and has been a great Pokemon in competitive play literally ever since it was first introduced. And while it MAY get access to swords dance, the idea of it being good offensively is honestly laughable due to it's lacking attack and speed stats
Great Music Selection! Also good to see Lapras in number one spot
I completely agree with you, Skarmory and Lapras are some of my all time favourite Pokémon, and Heracross is my favourite bug tipe, this video was amazing to watch 👍🏼
[5:34] man, this brings me back, rotom is my favorite pokemon ever. Back when I had pearl I had a rotom to my team and I knew one day it would become a bigger part of the franchise, and now its recording dynamax gym battles in galar X3
DUDUNSPARCE IS APPROACHING YOUR LOCATION RAPIDLY
Okay it’s been killing be what what is the intro song that always plays in the beginning of your videos??
Kalos Route 4 music!
Dunsparce is one of my favorite pokemon, it has some kind of weird appeal i appreciate, i will always want an evolution for it, and always bring it with me to the pokemon league (where it will do nothing but look fly on the end screen)
Stunfisk out here being treated like Butters as Margorine - “You said I’m ugly and I’m flat!”
I remember farming luvdisc solely for needing those heart things to teach Pokemon new moves in sapphire. I forgot if that's the exact reason you needed heart things, but i remember hating having to catch them
In my Omega Ruby playthrough I never had to catch one, I found enough heart scales by using rock smash on the boulders (although that made me run into quite a few Geodudes)
I love the concept of doing both best and worst amazing
At 7:30 (it's a few seconds later, but I wanted to include context), I'm sure you meant to use the term "coincidentally" instead of "ironically." It would have been ironic if Mimikyu had been deemed unviable and unloved by the fanbase since this would have been contrary to its goal of being loved. It's not a major mistake, but it did grab my attention.
Awesome video, as per usual, by the way! 😁
Stonjourner is to complex to small brains. That's why just big brain people can really apreciate it.
I honestly thought that pincurchin was just another form of snom when I first saw it. An electric urchin moth would've been really cool, but alas, we did not get it.
Solid list!!
Question! Why does everyone dislike Stantler? I used one in Emerald and always saw it as fairly strong with a decent move pool if you got Extrasensory. I’ve seen a lot of hate on it and was intrigued
Stonjourner does look like it would be a Temtem and I will never unsee it now
Fun fact: If dunceparse ( however it's written) got an evolution it wouldn't be used, because, just like Corsola, it would be better to use eviolite
I used a Mimikyu for a good amount of my Ultra Moon playthrough. She was a lot of fun to use, and she helped me beat Ultra Necrozma! Both its ghost/fairy typing and its vast move pull can make it a great Pokémon to destroy opponents with.
Hey, I'll have you know that Dunsparce is my favorite pokemon >:(((( 😂😂😂 good video!
Basculin is getting an evolution!!!
Just wondering where is duraludon? Feel like steel/dragon with amazing stats should be on the list :)
I've played through galar multiple times. Scoured the wiki for the best and all new Pokémon before I started playing and I never knew Stonjourner was even in the game 😂 have I simply missed it before or was it added later?
Hah, well it is a version exclusive but like I said it's hard to find...
watchinng in march 2023 (after the release of Legends and S/V), its interesting to see how this has aged.
No criticism tho, how could u know if/when they gain more stages?
Where is duraladon? Gotta be up there for single stage Pokémon
I don't think you realise how unimpressed many people are with it.
@@BrianStorm742 I think as a design its just ok. But he is one of the Pokémon that I really like using from this generation. He has solid stats and a solid move set
It's not exactly a great thing when your Spdef is so slow that even with the steel typing, you still get ko'd by moonblast. Plus I think he's too slow, should have been base 95 rather than 85.
It’s better than some that did make it
I am not a fan of the design
Basculin isn't useless.
Basculin can actually be viable if you use it correctly.
with pretty decent abilities on it's side.
so it's not a complete let down
It was literally invented because the developers realized they needed a generic fish to drop in the ocean and didn't have one yet, that counts for something.
@@BioniclesaurKing4t2 Basculin actually outspeeds over half the dex with a base speed of 98 which is faster than most legendaries. and has the same attack stat as Nidoking(before gen 7 gave it a 10 point buff)being base 92 and when combined with great abilities such as Adaptability, Rock Head, Reckless, and Mold Breaker it has a lot of variety and options and can hit like a truck. so don't underestimate the Unovan Magikarp.

Great video Cubone!
Poor Dunsparce; I so wish Drampa had been an evolution for it. Have you seen Hoops and Hip Hop's "Pokemon Cardinal" series? He gave Dunsparce a Ground/Flying-type evolution that's pretty cool. Also, I completely agree with all of your other rankings (you put my favorite Water-type at #1 best), although I might have tried to fit Aerodactyl in there somewhere. (Why isn't Pincurchin an Electric/Water type?) I just wish Mimikyu had some variations where it took on the disguises of other cute, lovable Pokemon.
I have seen the series and it seems really cool (and I might like to do my own version sometime!) Aerodactyl is probably an easy #7 best. But I have a feeling we might see some regional forms of Mimikyu someday...
