This video shows where I'm at on this new Chess set sculpture project that will be coming soon! The AJK Chess Set!
I show you how I like to attach sculptures to a wood base after I've started sculpting the design and talk about some of the concepts I've been considering when it comes to the pieces and this project.
Let me know what you think would make this project even better in the comments!

I saw the choice of making the pawns children, and I thought it was a little dark at first, but I really liked the description. Very well thought out.

Fun fact: pawn is a old word for “foot soldier” so they would be younger

This is so great. I used to sculpt chess sets when I was a student, out of Fimo. That was a long time ago but you have inspired me to consider returning to it. I love your designs, which are thought-provoking and beautifully sculpted. The knight struck me as rather conventional compared with other pieces though. You asked for ideas. You could create armour for the horse’s head, as many jousting and presumably battle horses wore. Thank you, and keep up the great work.

Amazing idea! Your interpretation of pawns is very thoughtful and accurate. I really love your ideas.
I think you found the best way to create the Rook, I can’t even imagine now, it could made any other way.
I suppose that to make all of them in one style, the Knight should look some other way. I mean: if all the figures are made showing accurate anatomy sculpting (I really love that!), the Knight should be designed as a human too, but should have some reference to a horse. Mabe it will look better if you try to make him kind of a minotaur, but with a horse head or helmet, or if you try to combine two figures to show a horseman (I know it’s hard to do in the same scale keeping in mind limits of the basement). My main point is that the Knight needs to have more anthropomorphic features.

I pretty much agree with the design for most except the knight (the horse piece) it shouldn't just be the head, it should be the mid-section upwards in a courbette pose with its arms stretched out. Right now, the knight just looks like a regular knight but upscaled

Good point. I may need to readdress the design.

Hopefully I didn't come across as callous, your sculpting skills are truly magnificent, your knowledge on form and anatomy alone is impeccable!@@AndrewJosephKeith

One problem I had with Fimo chess pieces was their weight. They were too light, because there’s something satisfying about chess pieces that have some heft. Are you concerned about the eventual weight of your pieces?

yes I'd like to add in some metal flakes or something to give added weight but I also have to consider the cost that will add to the pieces.

@@AndrewJosephKeiththere may be a design of fishing weight that your central screw would fit through. Or brass washers.
