When I saw her in concert, she talked about getting into music through the musical games with hand motions she used to play with neighbourhood kids on the streets. The 'talkie' singing style on this song reminds me precisely of that. I wonder if the slap bass was supposed to mimic the sound of slapping hands in games like that.
At first I was thinking "Is this from the same album?" It's an interesting change in style, including her vocal. But pretentious? No. IMO she was staying within her lanes throughout, while covering a broad range of songwriting and arrangement styles.
_Knight_ _Moves_ is definitely my least favourite, followed by _Straight_ _Lines_ and then _Neighborhood_ _Girls._ The top end is harder: _Undertow_ comes first, then _Cracking,_ _Freeze_ _Tag,_ and _Marlene_ _on_ _the_ _Wall_ are all close behind but I couldn't put them in any order. Overall a really good album, glad you enjoyed most of it too!
Yeah, the bass didn't really do it for me either. Not so much for the slaps but way too many pops. It would probably still be fine if it was sitting lower in the mix! And it was fun getting to know this album in full together with you, Justin! 😀👍

I usually cringe when people misspell it 'base', but I'm fine with it in combination with 'slap', because I've never been keen on that playing style 😁
@@mightyV444 Lol. Amazed I misspelled it. Will edit.
I forgot about the slap bass, but as soon as it came in, my thought this morning was uh-oh😊 Glad you could react to the song minus the bass

Good album overall but I don't care for this song.
Uhm... I think I liked your reaction better than the song.
