@@rexbriggs3251 Yeah, it is strange it allowed the rear to spin when in rock crawl. Definitely need some software updates (and nice thing that it can be updated).
@@jamesdoesburg6128 That doesn't do what Jay is talking about. It spins wheels that are getting no traction and often isn't applying enough torque to wheels that are. If the software is set so that they have to spin at the same rate it would prevent this issue.
From what I've been hearing, you have to stay on the throttle for the computer to try different traction scenarios and find the one that works. As soon as you let off, you keep resetting that action. Also, if you need "locker" type action, you MUST use Rock Crawl as the all purpose is designed with a rear bias that allows sliding the rear around. Apparently learning to drive the Rivian is not a simple process as many of the off-road rules don't apply. The plastic door and rocker plates are a weak point. Cheap and easy to repair, but annoying that they are designed to be sacrificial. Hopefully the after market will see this as an opportunity and come out with some more sturdy alternatives that save the trim.
Really good insights. Are there places to read how the bias is set by mode? I'd love to have an intellectual understanding so I can check it with the visceral feel of the modes when off-roading.
@@rexbriggs3251 Sadly, I don't know of any. This is just my opinion watching a bunch of people's videos and some of the discussions that I've read. It would be nice if Rivian would produce a guide that explains what the goal of various programming is and how the truck is designed to react to different situations. Of course, the truth might be that the programming is still being fine tuned. You might go out one day and go "WOAH, this works so much better now." The joy of OTA updates.
Most active track systems require a constant throttle. On ice vehicles 1500 rpm minimum. Stabbing the throttle and backing off when you are almost out just won't work. Looks like rock crawl is the real mode you want to always leave it in.
You got it! ua-cam.com/video/CTl5ab_AbTU/v-deo.html the repair (which only took 15min of actual labor... but a lot more leg work to figure out which clips to order and whether Rivian would get me the parts or whether I'd be on my own to fix it).
Rex, great video. It is 6:14am on a Wednesday morning and I am at a loss of words because I actually met you on the road at an EA station near Denver CO (if my memory serves me correct, maybe Edwards?) and we chatted about your journey to Denver! I just happened to come across your video and I was like "I think I know that guy" lol what a small world ! I hope you made it safely to Denver and would love to stay in touch or at least check out your videos! Also, side note, I just took delivery of my R1T yesterday as well...:)
Right on my friend! We made it. Just got home charger installed… now no more random trips to the King Sooner on the other side of town just to get the charge + shop experience. We should get a Rivian crew together for a weekend mountain trail drive.
So strange in the “climb out the side” how it really didn’t want to apply power to the front wheels when that should have been able to get you out. I would have expected it to at least slip the fronts on the maxtracks.
After this test: Brought to warranty and to the question "what happened" client answered "I don't really know, it just stopped working for some reason, I was just cruising around the city and it broke down" :D
It would be interesting to see Rivian develop a beta for what you are suggesting and let me try it on the tank trap vs other modes to see which works best.
This is possibly why we air down the tires, but still I’m disappointed with the R1T struggling a bit. Each motor is capable of moving the car by itself. I really want to see someone do an uphill rollers challenge on these cars and see how they respond.
I have a R1t on order. I never got to drive one with the offroad tires on it I hope it is not to loud on the highway what do you think about your tires for road use as far as road noise?
It is hard to show in the video how strange the surface is at the top of the hill. It is the hardest pack clay I have experienced, and with a little bit of water, it is slick - super slick. Very little traction for the front tires. I do wonder how mud tires would do, and maybe R1T will get some more options.
Interested in now the repair goes, but also curious if you will be looking for aftermarket rock sliders you could use instead/in addition to? Looks like you will actually be playing with the truck like it was meant to be used, so some extra armor might be in line….even if it would cut down on range.
YES! I would love to hear from you or others on best rock sliders for R1T. I'll be investigating myself and am keenly interested in a light weight (maybe Aero Aluminum) slider.
I remember going in the water pit searching for my numberplate, because the angle was so steep that the numberplate touched the ground and the car wasn't hit... Real attack angle Hummer H3 35.5% haha
Looks like they need to work on the programming. One will spinning, one will stationary, add more power to the stationary wheel. Seems simple but I am sure there is a lot more to it.
Check out my latest Moon Rocks, NV video. It shows a lot more of how the wheel spin action seems to work. Still figuring it out, but agree, more control to driver on wheel power would be nice!
Right? I reset trip A before starting the day, and took a snapshot at the end. According to trip computer: I used 13kWh (about 10% of the battery 135kWh) for 7miles of driving at 3mph, over 2hrs and 0.54 mi/kWh efficiency (vs 2.04 Rivian rates the 20” AT tires). I guess I could have spent another 20hrs playing off road. When I’ve done trail driving, it’s more around .7 mi/kWh, so the Tank Trap escape certainly brought the average down, LOL.
I found a very close version and did the repair (ua-cam.com/video/CTl5ab_AbTU/v-deo.html) but I'd like to know the vendor and part so I can get the exact right ones. Hopefully, Rivian will get the common parts available in their store, or share the details with owners.
Interesting suggestion. I wouldn't have thought about Rally at the low speed, but maybe you are right. I will try it next time to see how different modes handle the situation.
i think logan is right. that scenario is not about precision at low speed. it’s just all about slinging mud, dirt, water. rally mode and then punch it after backing up to opposite side to get a little steam going. bet it would’ve been totally different.
@@rexbriggs3251 Put the spikes down,The weight of the truck will push the spikes down and they won't slip as easy. I was surprised after the 3rd fail they didn't try it.
R1S would do better, I think. It has a better break-over angle, so it probably wouldn't have lost the door trim. It also has better departure angle, so it might have been able to drop in where the Bronco dropped in - I wasn't about to try it in the R1T (you can hear me say, "that's crazy, but OK" when my Bro-in-law drops in, but maybe R1S can do it even better.
Interesting they cant keep up with orders. they have only produced under 400. And your out there tearing it up. Same for the Bronco. Then we see locally people selling these 2 models in the area same color. So beware it might be these that were trashed out there.
I guess I read the map incorrectly. When I get back to the area, hopefully you will show me the tank trap. I'd also like to check out the stairs and Truck Hill.
That’s an interesting observation. Once we have a winch, I’d like to test it in the mud. I did have the experience in mud on and up slope where it just spun and I had to back down. Some of that is tires, I suspect.
They have plenty of cash to plan and execute for the long game. I agree. I’d like to see them by more responsive to my request to buy a full size spare, and a call back on if Rivian will let me order clips and mail to me to install. They offered pre-order holders the ability to buy stock at ipo price, and, full disclosure, I did. I am more of a buy and hold kind of investor, and this was a relatively small purchase (about the the same cost of all the recovery gear and options such as ppf I added).
That plastic trim looks cheap and flimsy. Why even add it? Would look much better without those bits and just see the nice painted metal like any other truck.
The R1T needs "locker mode" where all 4 wheels spin at the same rate, no matter what. Should be an easy software addition.
It would be nice to have something to control power distribution, right?
@@rexbriggs3251 Yeah, it is strange it allowed the rear to spin when in rock crawl. Definitely need some software updates (and nice thing that it can be updated).

All they need is some type of mud tires. It has more than enough power . For what these trucks cost they should have that option at no extra cost.

Awesome video props to you for getting it dirty and having fun. How was dealing with getting parts? It’s been one of my biggest concerns

They need a very simple mode - "spin 'em all" mode.. In a lot of off-road scenarios 4 Tyre spin is a must.. They can program it. Why don't they..
