It's our first time... RV Boondocking & Buc-ee's on our way to Texas

- Time for Texas! We traveled more than 1,000 miles from Ohio to Texas in our Grand Design Momentum fifth wheel toy hauler. And let's just say it was an adventure... In this episode, we share some of our mishaps including a new lesson we've learned despite being seasoned RVers, our first boondocking experience, our fuel costs and a stop at Buc-ee's- the most iconic (and record holding) "gas station" and travel center in the world.
What's next?
San Antonio, TX

Nice to see a young family having fun and traveling. Good luck wherever you go guys.
I'm an native Texan. Your description of Bucee's is the best I have seen.
Buc-ee's, the best travel center in the world. They are not a truck stop, they are a travel center. Built around the family who is traveling for vacation.
Cleanest restrooms you will find on your travels.
Enjoy Texas.
We need more Buc-ee’s. Definitely our new favorite stop!
Bucees is trash
Long ways to San Antonio,Tx. & it’s Hot & Hummid
Glad you loved our Bucee's
We take Buc-ees for granted here in Texas. Glad you enjoyed stopping there! The restrooms are so nice and clean. Corpus Christi needs one.
Hopefully they keep expanding and building more!
I hope you guys get one soon🥰
As a resident of Corpus Christi I hope we never get one or one between here and SA, I avoid Bucees at all costs
Great video. I love how you don't hide the problems. I am a first time watcher and I just subscribed. We never leave early either. The latest we have ever gotten out was 5:30 pm. In all honesty though the car broke down a couple of miles from the house and we had to limp it home and change vehicles. That was before we bought the RV. We have a 2006 42' Class A Monaco Dynasty diesel pusher. We tow a Lincoln MKX. The latest we have ever left in it was 4:30pm. It was the day we picked it up. The last thing they had to do was install our tow gear. After a quick light's check we found the guy had wired the turn signals backwards and that had to be redone. Then we had to figure out how to put the car in tow mode. When we finally left the dealership it was 4:30pm on a Friday in Tampa Florida in the rain. Being in the rain in rush hour traffic definitely taxed my stress level. We finally pulled into a Cracker Barrel in Brunswick Georgia at 12:30 am. For the night. I slept like a baby. Other Class A 's were there running their generator so we did too. We are all electric and in the South we wanted those 3 roof top air conditioning units running. We have never been to Buckee's but we look forward to one day. Looking forward to your next video. 🙂
Thank you for the positive feed back! There’s always bumps in the road, usually offers some opportunity to learn something new or challenge yourself to find a solution! Definitely stop at a Buc-ee’s if your passing one, it’s an experience! We are glad to have you here!
you should have stopped in the first town. most any auto parts, general hardware, ranch supply, etc would have had a bolt for you.
Probably true, but pliers makes for a heck of story later! Way to improvise, adapt, and overcome!
True, but I applaud his resourcefulness!
Exactly!
@@tCCZebra70 asking one of the truckers if they had an extra bolt would have been the way to adapt and improvise. Rigging up a cheap pair of channel locks was a stupid and dangerous idea.
I'm glad things worked out for you guys
You are really good at making interesting videos! My husband watches RV videos a lot. Most of the time, I think "WOW! This is not that good." Your first video is much better than people who having been doing these videos for years. Love the way you showed the quick repair on the way and the Buc-ees tour! We have never stopped a "Buc-ees" so it was very helpful. We traveled with our kids when they were little (one was handicapped). It was tough but some of our favorite memories were those trips. Keep making videos. I subscribed. Can't wait for your next one.
Your wife is lucky to have such a handy guy to drive and make repairs.
but did he replace the bolt for the leaf spring
We’ve done a lot of traveling with a large 5th wheel and we run from Texas to the Florida keys. My suggestion to you two is plan plan and plan. Don’t leave late in the evening especially if you don’t have a paid spot waiting for you.
Disagree...I am a disabled widow who had a small child with transition issues when we traveled...The only way to take the stress off and get an early start was to just get going at whatever time that was that we were ready! Often it was dinner time and sometimes after when I could get everything done and in the RV, so we drove down the road and slept in the Walmart...just a few miles from home. It took the stress off and made a super easy, early start the next day. Plus it was just fun!
@@c.m.303 C.M. That’s awesome if it works for you and if I felt like you I would do the same.
A fun trick to solve the issue of getting everyone ready and out the door with a late start...do it the day before the trip starts! It takes all the pressure off to casually get ready and on the road sometimes before dinner, sometimes after dinner...and make it down the road even just a mile to the local Wally world to sleep. It has many advantages...it makes for a really easy start the next morning! And the fun and excitement get to start the night before with sort of a test run before putting miles on, in case something was forgotten. Enjoy the journey!
Enjoyed watching your trip and I have some tips for a safer, more relaxing adventure. 1) Add some reflective tape to the sides of your slide-outs so drivers can better see when it is deployed in rest areas. 2) Start looking for rest areas well before you get tired. If you get one sooner, take the break. 3) DON'T rely on MacGyver road fixes... GO directly to the closest part store or dealer and get it fixed right!
I don't RV, but those are excellent tips
I live in San Antonio. Great video, welcome to Texas! You guys should stay. Just the type of folks we are looking for!
I was thinking the same thing! There are lots of things to see in Texas and we are right next door to New Mexico. Carlsbad Caverns and beautiful forest in NM. And, you can get to Colorado thru the panhandle.
Texas is a whole ‘nother country.
I'm 67 and never visited Texas until last year. I flew down to SA both times and loved the vibe (River Walk, on-and-off bus, etc.--so much to experience in the town). Also spent several days around New Braunfels and Hill Country. Looking forward to exploring a lot more of Texas with my RV. I just pray gas prices get back down where they were before the current administration took over.
You are my type of people. I'm from the Evergreen State (Washington). It's beautiful and home to 3 National Parks, but . . . it's so hard to be red in such a blue state. God Bless America 🇺🇲
They are lucky their rig wasn't stolen in San Antonio.
Adventure, freedom and guts. Happy travels.
My wife and I visited a Bucee's in Florida last year. That has to be the coolest rest stop that we have ever seen. It would be great to have one here in New Hampshire
Agreed! Would love to see more around the country! Glad you guys enjoyed your stop as well!
We had our faucet turn on as well, learned to use the hair ties really quick. We have a list that we use when getting ready to hookup/unhook. it has helped so much. There is so much to remember. We don't travel too much during the winter and have Harvest Hosts but at 100+ degrees - we don't use it. Hope to some day. Thanks for the video, glad you made it ;)
Seemed like a fun and trying road trip. Glad ya'll made it to your destination safely.
Looks like "trying" ;)
Loved the plyers fix. Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do! The roads in Maryland have turned into crap. We lost our cap for the sewer hose storage from hitting a chuck hole. At least the hose wasn't dragging on the road. The Buc-ee's looks like an adventure by itself.
That’s our once a year fix! The Buc-ees is definitely an adventure, if your ever pass one definitely stop and check it out!
It is!! 🥰
YES! Even living inside Texas, most of the time we stop at Buc-ee's on trips. (For nothing else their really clean restrooms!)
Thank you for sharing your experience. Really does help the rest of us.
Thanks for watching! Safe travels!
I am a San Antonian. Even WE can't believe our weather this year. It is abysmal. The way that you described Buc-ee's is spot on. Even Texans go there regularly.
You experienced some real challenges. Welcome to Texas! We sometimes go out of our way to stop at a Buc-ee's. I agree with the other commenter, you missed the 100s. Glad it was a bit cooler during your trip.
What a great ad for Buc -ee's. It really is a great experience! My granddaughter works there in the Temple Store ☺️
The exact same thing happened when I forgot to turn off the water pump. Lesson learned! Glad you were able to roll with it.
It seems there’s always a new lesson to be learned while RVing :)
WELCOME TO TEXAS!!!!! Y'ALL ARE AWESOME!
Thank you! We loved Texas!
Omg 😳
Oh well that’s part of the adventures
More memories
Welcome to Texas!! 🦫🐴🐄🤠
Welcome toTexas ! So glade you enjoyed Bu- ee's. I live about 25 miles from one off I30! Enjoy yourTexas Adventure! 🌈💞💖
Always pre-plan your rest stops. Calling walmarts or other places a head of time will let you know really quickly if they offer overnight parking.
We've stayed in countless Walmart's for a quick overnight sleep with our 45' toy hauler. All Walmart's allow overnight parking, however some have city ordinances against it. Definitely call ahead. Sometimes they have signs that say "no overnight parking", call anyway. We've seen that twice, and the manager said "go ahead and park out of the way".
@@halkench Correct. A lot of times the "No Overnight" parking is a way to allow them to keep out homeless that want to spend a week or more in the lot. I've stayed in several Wal Marts that had the 'No Overnight Parking" signs. I simply go to Customer Service Desk and ask if it's all right. I've yet to be turned down.
I asked about the signs and was told it's only for those spaces the signs are in because that's how the delivery trucks get in, and RV's have been parked there keeping the delivery trucks from being able to get in.
Experience is the best teacher. Y'all are learning as you go. Good on you! We have a new Buc-ees here in Crossville TN. Best "gas station" food and shopping ever! You definitely want to invest in a generator and/or solar as your budget allows. In the meantime, just enjoy these adventures 🙂
We will sooner or later be making some power updates!
We've never been to Buc-ees neither, however, being from Pittsburgh, we love Sheetz!! Great video! Great job explaining everything too. You've got a new sub now!
The closest Buc-ee's to you is in Richmond KY south of Lexington on I-75.
We always go in and ask at Walmart if we can stay the night. They usually say yes. Beautiful family and pup 🥰
Thanks 😊 We will try asking them next time!
Its been our experience, if there are “no overnight parking” signs posted, do not ask. Move on. Either the town has an ordinance against it or that Walmart has had bad experiences from RV’ers not using good overnight parking etiquette.
We just got our first exposure for Buccees in richmond kentucky on the way back from Hilton Head South Carolina. They are awesome. I was talking to a manager and he said its possible they are coming north sometime
Hearing you say pralines had me laughing like crazy. Here in the south (I'm from the MS Gulf Coast), we pronounce them prah-leens. Thank you so much for showing your Buc-ee's experience.
It’s the northern coming out in us 😂 Thanks for watching!
Okay, I'm from way deep East Texas, butt up against Louisiana.
You got pralines right. But, here's the real test. How do you pronounce pecans?
It's the division of the South😅. No one is more Southern than Paula Deen, but she and I don't say this there same way🙄
I just found your channel. I’m a older single woman with a 16 foot Airstream and I would not know what to do in this situation. It’s good to see a young family out enjoying themselves (most of the time anyway). Safe travels to you all! 😎
Thank you for watching! Safe travels to you as well!
@@Couplescience Safe travels to you! 😎
I have an RV but I never travel with it for that very reason😕
Welcome to Texas! Buccees is awesome. Glad you got to experience it. We LOVE the San Antonio KOA. We stay there 90% of the time we're in San Antonio. My first time staying there was over 30 years ago. We live about 3.5 hrs away.
Absolutely beautiful KOA and friendly staff!
Just found you guys, love ya! We're full-timers from Pennsylvania and I love how you did what you had to do to keep rollin, AND with kids and K-9's. I think it's great that you have a great, safe set-up to go down the highway with. I retired two years ago, after 45 years driving semis. Bless you and your family, have a safe journey!
Im glad you found us! we are originally from the SW of Pennsylvania. Thank you for the comments and stay safe out there!
Our new favorite rving channel. The trials and tribulations are a major part of traveling in an rv, however the rewards are much greater. Harbor Freight has a Predator 3500 generator that we used for 4 years when boondocking and it ran one ac, microwave, and kept the battery charged. We kept it locked to the bed of the truck and never unloaded it to use it. Make sure the exhaust is clear and pointed towards the cab. We are looking forward to your ventures.
I’ve been looking at the predator generators for a while, they seem like a great option! As we move to full time we’re going to come up with a decent dry camping set up. We are happy to have you following our channel, keep the comments coming!
Wow! I had this happen to me but my faucet was turned and the water poured onto the counter and ran into the floor. I love your hair tie trick!
Crazy... Crazy, But fun.
Always fun! If your not having fun what are you doing!?!?!?!?
Nice vlog. Cracks me up how he says “ the buc-ees”😂 thumbs up on her review. Very nice capture of how busy it gets and all the things one can purchase and enjoy.
Thank you for the comment and for watching our videos, we’re glad you enjoyed it! We love “the Buc-ee’s!”
@@RoadWereOn 😂😎👍❤️
Great idea on making that temp. fix for the leaf spring bolt. Yeah!!! all the food at Bucees is great. I would have started with the chopped brisket....lo,
Safe travels and I hope better luck in your future travels
Great bush craft fix on the leaf springs!
Buc-ees is awesome! When I visit my daughter in Texas we always have to stop at the one between Houston (where I fly into) and Orange-where she lives. Food is so good!
Sounds like y’all had quite the adventure. Safe travels y’all!
Thank you!
My wife explaines to my next of kin...
After his 5th trip to the beef jerky section, I knew he wouldnt survive the night..
I love bucees! As a full time traveler the restrooms and food are great!
It's the best! We hope they will expand to more areas of the country in the future!
I'm sorry that you had an inconvenience on your family road trip but I commend you for thinking on your feet and making that repair on the side of the road. Stay positive and enjoy your family. I am loading up my fifth wheel toy hauler as we speak and I'm heading from South Florida to Denver Colorado this week.
Safe travels and have fun!
Thanks for sharing! I kept seeing signs for Buccees while in either GA or SC, but had no idea what it was so I didn’t stop. I’ll definitely stop next time!! 👍🏼
In the past, we’ve passed the signs as well and had no idea! Definitely worth a stop though!
Great video of your Texas trip. The pilers fix with all the pull ties was classic. We usually travel with the water pump off but never thought about it really. But now I'm glad we did.
Great video. We live in Texas and love Buc-ees
We are getting one here in Amarillo!!!
Thank you!
Safe travels, folks!
Thank you!
We all have made rookie mistakes, no matter how long we have been RV’ing.
3-3-3 (3 hours, 300 miles, 3 adult beverages) is our travel goals.
Simple reminder…
Check list, check list, check list.
Blessings on your travels.
We have heard of this 3-3-3 rule before, this is the first I see with the 3 adult beverages! I like it!
Ah yes, Buc-ee's, purveyor of all that is Texas.
Our summers do tent toward the warm side. Welcome to Texas.
Live and learn on a trip, generator needed boondocking, assortment of nuts, bolts for major items
I see you partook of another of our favorites -- QT gas stations! Nice and well lit and friendly
I have a big plastic jar for nuts and bolts of different sizes. In the way most of the time. But really handy when you need them. Like when your leaf spring falls off. Hope to see future videos.
RVr's have their share of hardships. I drove a Newell 45ft pusher for 2 years, I know. I've since traded the motorhome for upscale motels and a SUV. Much happier now. No more bad. all good.
Brilliant Macgyver fix with the pliers and zip ties!
Thank you!
Always turn off the water pump and secure the propane tank valves. Run your refrigerator off of your batteries which are being charged by your truck. The same thing is true when you are leaving your camper for any significant amount of time (sightseeing or shopping, etc).
Keep a roll of Viva paper towels in the cab of your truck.
Our sink faucet does the same thing. I use a small bungee cord now. Bucees is now a Texas institution. You can get everything you need to survive except maybe underwear and socks. Great lessons here.
You did a great job there getting your family there safe you needed to stop and get a bolt for your leaf spring why'd you wait so long you have a nice truck and RV and you have a wonderful family glad you had a good time be looking for your videos in the future you are very handy
We did pass a Home Depot before we got back onto the highway but I swear it was the smallest Home Depot parking lot and entrance I’ve ever seen! So we kept rolling, we checked maps and there wasn’t a Lowe’s or Home Depot that wasn’t a good bit out of our way so we decided to just keep checking on it and ended up fixing it at the campground.
Lovin your travel trailer vibes
and the visit to Buc-ee's ❣
It looks like a real busy place
but since it's already summer
vacation time; that could be the one reason why the store was extremely jam packed.
I was praying 🙏you folks were gonna be able to buy and replace that missing piece from under your trailer; but that store was just way too swamped even for me. Well be safe and enjoy your road travels, God Bless and "Many Happy Miles 🛻👍🏼👏🏼❣
The video was outstanding . Buckys fine place to stop & clean as a Disney Park !!
Thank you for watching! It’s a tie between Buc-ee’s and Disney for sure, they’re both spotless!
Hope yall had a great time here in Texas. Buc-ees is always a must. Now I want to go. An hr drive lol
I would go an hour out of my way for a Buc-ee’s! Wouldn’t even question it😂
I'm so sorry you had such a serious problem with your RV. Unfortunately the new ones are not made well at all, that NEVER should have happened! So glad you could rig it well enough to not be stuck on the side of the road. We have been RVing for 12 years, been through 4 RV's, all 5th wheels. We bought a used one to start and now I wish we had kept it. Then went through two new Jaycos (back when Jayco was truly Jayco, now it's been bought out) and had significant trouble with both of them. Now have a 2006 model 5th wheel that was top of the line when new, it's given us no trouble. Nice to get in and go where you want and not worry about the RV. I wish you all the best in future travels!
Welcome to San Antonio!
LOL. Riding on plyers, Genius. I love it.
My husband and I switch off driving four hours each when traveling. We have traveled all across the USA. Good luck with your travels.
One day I’ll let Shannon drive! Maybe……..lol. Thank you and safe travels out there!
Nice video - looking forward to more. We are from Ohio also and drive our motorhome often to SA to visit family. Magnolia is a myst visit, too. Love Texas.
More is on the way! we did make the stop at the Silos and Magnolia Market, It was definitely worth the stop!
We live in ohio and went to Richmond KY to see buccees and it was great...thanks for video!
My daughter and I went to the Richmond, Ky. Bucee's from WV.
About a month ago. Also been to the Bucee's in St. Augustine, Florida
I love the brisket sandwiches !
She has along with her family been to the newest, largest, Bucee's in Tennessee !
The road we're on, it amazes me as to how many "experts" there are out there that know what's best for you & your family better than you do. And would have simply asked the truck drivers for a bolt, which you did. Or to tell you that any big bolt would have worked, not so. Or that you don't need such a big trailer, & where to park etc. You did great considering your obstacles. You do you, there's always going to be know it all. Wishing you & yours the safest of travels.
We appreciate this comment more than you know! Thank you for your kindness! Be well :)
We plan to buy an RV next summer so in the meantime I’m trying to watch rv videos to learn more about this lifestyle. Thank you for putting together a great informative video.
Thanks for watching! When we bought our first RV, we had never even been camping in one before. We spent a lot of time watching videos on UA-cam of other families doing this and decided we were just going to jump right in. It has been such a great experience for our family. We hope we can provide you with more insight about what it's like in future videos. If you have any questions, please reach out!
Stay at the lodge
What a great ad for Buc -ee's. It really is a great store. My granddaughter works at the Temple Store in Texas ☺️
Welcome to Texas
Part of the learning curve of RVing. Good experiences for future travel trips. Cool McGyver moment with those pliers. Might a good idea to get a cheap tackle box and fill it with a variety of nuts, bolts, washers, screws, hose clamps, etc. As well as a cheap tool kit. Have fun with your new toy!! Aslo, are you running 1 or 2 batts? 2 in parallel last a lot longer. Or a generator. Surprised you rig didn't come with one. Worth the investment.
Just one battery, stock one that came with the unit but upgrades will be coming
Yes! Turn off water pump when driving. The hair band may work on the faucet, but if a pipe, or hose vibrates loose or breaks you'll still have water all over.
Loved the plier trick
wasn't hot yet when you were there. 13 days over 100 now. Safe travels to you
Oh wow, I’d for sure be hiding in the pool or trailer! Especially with the humidity down there!
Welcome to Texas, from Houston buc-ees is my favorite places .
Y’all hang in there, it gets better
I live in Dallas and Buc-ees is one of my favorite places to treat myself. I luv the brisket sandwiches. Thanks for this great video. Be safe.
Thank you for watching! Be safe as well!
Oh Lord. Sounds like “ one of those trips”! Had our share of those.
When you said sheetz I freaked! Im planning to start full time travel in about 4 months and I am from small town PA, Definetly subbing!
Thank you! Sheetz is definitely a big deal in PA but Buc-ee’s is next level! We wish you the best with going full time!
We love stopping at Buc-ee-'s!
It’s the best! Our daughter asks us all the time now if we can go there!
we love our Buc''ee's in Texas
Very nice thank you
Smart Idea with the plyer deal!
Wait you didn't stop to fix the leaf with a bolt? 🤦🤦🤦 Common sense.
Good job on the vid guys
Got to love Buc-ee's, get you some Uncle Steve's Shake when there! You will love it!
Added to our list of Buc-ee’s things to try!
@@RoadWereOn The regular is awesome on burgers, The Gator Shake is awesome on wings.
We’re headed down to Port Aransas south of San Antonia. Jan and February. Yeah fuel prices are crazy right now.
Great quick fix on the trailer..... I'm not sure I would have trusted that! you proved me wrong..... Side note, When we decided we were going to "boondock" at all, I knew a generator was a must.... I got one just big enough to run one AC.... and it could charge the batteries at the same time
Love Buc. EE
The San Antonio KOA is our favorite weekend campground. They’ve upgraded the campground in recent years and it is so nice now
Agreed! It was the nicest KOA we have stayed at. And the owners and workers were so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
I can't wait to check out a buc-ee's I wished we had one in Ohio can't wait till we get to hit the road so we wish you guys safe travels from Rick and Pam from southern Ohio at Big Bear Creek family campground

We got flooded in our Class C the same way. Forgot the pump, vibration turns on water, flood. We now ride with the sink strainer upside down in the sink so it won't drop down and plug sink, just in case we forget the pump. Great video. Crummy you had issues along the way.
We’re sorry you had the same issue but thank you for watching and sharing. That’s a great tip about turning the strainers upside down! I think we will start doing that as well!
New subscriber. Really enjoy your RV channel. Have to stop at Buc-ee’s even on a day trip. My kids demand it. Buc-ee’s is the only place where you go in for snacks and come out $65 lighter. FYI - June 2022 was the hottest June in recorded Texas weather history.
I just saw a news article about record day of temps over 100! it's crazy. its very easy to spend the $$ there.
Welcome to Texas!
Thank you! We loved our time in Texas!
