  • A look at a vintage 1944 Caterpillar 8R Series D8 tractor equipped with an R.G. LeTourneau model K-8 bulldozer. Thanks to the PAmining Team, this dozer is now in the process of getting a new home in the hands of a collector.

    That lever that you said turned the pony motor over is actually the decompression lever. On that dozer you would turn the pony motor over from the front of the tractor with an old school crank. The purpose of the decomp lever is to allow the pony motor to spin the diesel without having the strain of the full compression from the diesels cylinders. You turn the decomp off once the diesel is hot enough and intern the diesel is able to turn over under its own power.

    That's a top-notch video. I think I learned more in that time than I've learned in almost all UA-cam videos I've seen, combined. An old boy who field serviced RD8s before the war recently told me how operators would clean the clutch on the fly with Pyrene extinguishers when the disc got oiled down.

    We had a '37 D7 with the blade on the farm, my uncle used it in his teens.. and I'm sure it was used to build the dam to create the lake we still have. Sadly, it got cut up when scrap prices skyrocketed several years ago. It would have been a sweet project. I did manage to get the pony motor running back in the 90s.

    Very informative. I used one of these on Christmas Island (British Army) 1960. That one had Birtley hydraulics. Built a very strong arm with the 90lb pull on the clutch :) It will still be there!
    Replaced around that time by the D8H.

    Yes you cover the story , most excellent sir , sure took a good operator to get the best from these machines! I have No 1914 left factory 28 August 1943 stamped SP (special plant) it has a D8n series Hyster winch apparently to US 7th fleet. Many were used for tank recovery some even fitted with bullet shield protection. NZ govt used my machine while making Nandi Airport in Fiji Then NZ army sold to demolition firm RYANS in Christchurch then Cameron now me! it has developed part of a small farm in canterbury .Still operational she winched our "retirement" house on transporter into position on the worst rainstorm for 2 years. sure glad to have her. Thanks Buddy

      +Richard Bruce - "SP" in the serial number stands for "Special Parts" - i.e., additional accessories and non-standard components added to the tractor during factory assembly - as compared to accessories or attachments added after the tractor left the factory.
      Typically, these "Special Parts" were non-standard governors, non-standard track shoes, heavy duty battery charging systems, factory lighting, military-standard oil filters, and non-standard transmission or final drive gearing.
      Cat D6's, D7's and D8's with special transmissions were marked "SPC-G" on the upper rear vertical surface of the steering clutch housing.
      Tractors fitted with wide gauge tracks had "W" in the Serial Number prefix.
      If the tractor was Wide Gauge and also had non-standard factory additions, it had "WSP" in the Serial Number.
      The use of "SP" in the Serial Number was discontinued during December 1945 - except for tractors having "special" (non-standard) transmission or final drive gears.
      Refer to the Caterpillar Service Magazines, Feb 19,1940 and Feb 20, 1941, and December 15, 1945.

      +PAmining I'm sure the 2u didn't get an oil clutch,but the 13a,14a and 15a did.also.a live cable unit,not depending on the clutch being in to work,was added.the diesel fuel torque converter was in the 15a but one needed to keep the tank at least half full or it would run hot.Ive got a 15a soon for sale.even has segmented sprockets.

    @UnitCrane514 Haha, the reason I thought that was because on the D8E I was on, the hand lever exactly like this one was used to turn the pony over. And thanks, there will be lots more coming up!     I had a chance to see the 8R in action last weekend in Conneaut OH. At the D-Day event.

      esquad 540 I used to run one of these 8Rs for a daily occupation. After that the 2U was a welcome relief. That shifter was a nightmare if you ever got into a bind. Ultimately the power shift was the only way to go. But the nostalgia was nice.

    Just a further comment, when these dozers were pulling scrappers the blade would be dropped off and the blade cable directed to the rear because the scrapper needed two cable drums to operate it, one to drop the belly down to scrape up the load and the other to pull forward the ejector plate to push the load out. I loved to listen to these machines work because the cable drum brakes and clutches would make a whoop whoop sound that could heard for miles. Thank you

    that handle he said was to start the pony is the compression release for the big motor.this had a 5 and three quarter inch piston.the d7 in this era was the same bore and stroke but a 4 cyl.the mains and rod bearings were also the same.I believe the journal dimeter was 4 inches but I cant remember if this was the mains or rods.

    Good video. Looks surprisingly intact - especially the tracks - until you see the seat, and the fact that the injector pipes are all missing. Still though, could be a good restoration project for someone.

    100+ HP was a massive amount of power in the 40s. Consider that the first wheeled tractor to break the 100hp barrier was in 1963

      Mine had a rops, extra rear winch, 2 seats, also the blade angle was manually adjustable

    Thanks for an A+ video. Related trivia: During WWII, hydraulics were a protected, strategic technology. Application of hydraulics to aircraft elevators on carriers created an advantage over the Japanese, who were still using slower screw jacks. Before the war, the stage at Radio City Music Hall was renovated, using state of the art hydraulics. It could raise, lower, tilt and spin. Military guards were stationed under the stage for the duration of the war, to protect the technology from spys.

Theres one sitting at a abandoned gravel pit in Wisconsin that is now D&R property and they refuse to let me remove it for restoration, claiming I would destroy habitat if I went in with a low boy on the gravel road ????????
