The book places more emphasis on the “infection” being an allegory for *very* deep depression.
Once you see it in that framework it makes more sense that R’s journey is one of psychological recovery more than falling in love (though it’s definitely part of it)
He is quite literally learning to live again and he does it with the love and support of a network of friends.
It’s honestly a great read and R’s inner monologues are beautifully written. I wish they hadn’t tried to make it a YA for the movie.

@Logan Goulet "Young Adult" refers to media (usually books) aimed at teens. Think Hunger Games or Twilight.
Warm Bodies and its sequels lean more speculative fiction. The themes are darker, the characters older, and the ending isn't quite as perfect and happy, but in a way that compliments the story and makes it feel more grounded (or as grounded as a story about zombies can be)
I liked the movie, but I definitely recommend the books.

I vibe with this theory and think it applies perfectly to the movie, but the book explains zombiesm as a supernatural undeath by despair situation, the apocalypse was caused by a large percent of the human race hitting emotional rock bottom and coming under the influence of some dark force released by enough humans giving up, bonies are zombies that gave up on even the smallest fragments of their humanity.

This was a great episode. I loved this cheesy movie, and I recognized the Romeo and Juliet thing, but it actually goes deeper than that like how R's friend is named M (for Mercutio, Romeo's best friend), Juliet's friend is Nora (who is into biology, and something of Nurse, who was Juliet's friend and confidant), Juliet's father has the fairly Italian name of Grigio. And Juliet's edible ex was Perry (instead of Paris, whom Romeo also kills). And of course the balcony scene. Then again, I'm a huge Shakespeare fan, so I noticed it right away.

I love that you did a breakdown of this movie. The bonies are definitely at the top of the hierarchy. If I remember correctly, in the book they were smart enough to organize "classrooms" for child zombies. Child zombies didn't have an instinct to hunt humans and so they would be taught. Humans would be brought to the airport and the adult zombies would form a ring around human and child zombies so that the kids could learn to hunt.
It's been a long time since I read the book. If you enjoyed the movie, I recommend it as it might fill in some plot points and lore.

I think there are concepts here that are very fascinating.
For starters, the zombies still think. That alone is interesting, but the fact they gain memories from the brains they eat is also fascinating. Imagine a zombie virus variation that actually allowed them to become more intelligent with every brain they eat, allowing for planning and societies, among other things.
Additionally, I remember seeing a trailer for this movie and thinking R's heart started upon his first sight of Julie. That made me think, until this very video, that having a shock to the heart would've allowed for his returning to a human state, which I would've found the most fascinating concept.
In other words, this movie would've been better if the zombies just needed a strong stimulation/shock to start the process of returning to life, and R's shock just happened to be love at first sight.

This movie puts in mind a zombie novel I once read called 'The Words of Their Roaring'.
The zombie infection in that book works something like this. An infected initially has a siezure, dies, revives, and starts eating people. And they stay that way for a long, long, looooong, time. But if an infected is around long enough, the infection stabilizes within them, and their brain begins to slowly fully reactivate.
The novel is about how this happens years after infection, and once the process completes a zombie is once again fully human in intelligence and thought, but the survivors who have lived in terror of the zombies for years ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS and pop zombies on reflex. So the first few zombies to complete this process are struggling to try and communicate to the uninfected that things are changing, and there soon won't be a reason to fear their kind anymore. That soon, the danger will pass and the world can rebuild, human and zombie together.
It's a really cool novel, I really suggest it.

In addition to everything you said I always assumed that the virus itself also had a response to certain neurochemicals that could actually break down the viral DNA in large enough quantities. And since all emotions including love are generated by neurochemicals I was always under the impression that because of our listening to music in addition to the extended amount of time the virus has been present in the body he had enough dopamine in his system to break down enough of the virus to allow the process to begin. So after enough time of the body building up antibodies even though it wasn't able to transport them and the correct stimuli from the outside providing the dopamine kick the process that you described could begin. But of course that was just my theory in addition to what you said because I thought it would be interesting that there could be a virus that actually has a weakness to the neurochemicals from positive emotion which wouldn't have hindered it during immediate infection because people would be feeling things like fear and despair upon becoming infected as well as explaining why they refer to the late stage infected as being individuals who gave up hope

The reason why I liked this movie so much is that it's campy and weird on purpose, and it makes it hilarious. There are a lot of interesting aspects to it, as you've technically gone into in this video. It's similar to the "it's so bad it's good" phenomena, but not quite in the same way.
