The 30-06 Woodmaster is a good gun. As has already been said, keeping it clean is the key. My wife bought me one about 1975-76, and I shot my first deer with it not long after. Only a few years later I work was scarce and I had to sell the rifle to a friend. He passed away a couple or so years ago, but I would see his son occasionally. I always hated that I had sold it, so when I saw my friends son the other week I asked if he had a 30-06 semi-auto that used to be his. When he said he did, I described it to him and he said he had, so I explained how his dad had gotten it and asked if he would be willing to sell it back to me almost 40 years later. He responded that if I could remember how much his dad had paid me for it, he would let me have it back for the same price. I told him that was a long time ago, but I would see if I could come up with it. As I started to walk away he said, "Wait a minute. Since it was a gift from your wife, I will give it back to you." It wasn't functioning too good when I got it back, so. I took it apart to see if I could find anything and give it a through cleaning at the same times. I found nothing broken, but after a good cleaning, it fires perfect.
that's a damn good old school person who values friendship more so than a few hundred dollars. There are still decent folks out there just have to look harder.
ALWAYS take a backup rifle on your hunting trips. Rifles are much cheaper than hunts that end in equipment failure. I bought a 742 in 1981, and although I've never really liked it that much, I will keep it until the end. Great video!
I've had a 742 woodsmaster 308 for over 10 years and never jammed on me once. Its all about keeping it clean. Take care of your gun and your gun will take care of you.
My dad, which is 71 years old, has had one of these since 1978 and still hunts with it. He bought the 742 in 30-06 and a Remington 1100 in 12 guage the same year and those are his go-to hunting guns. He's taken hundreds of whitetail over the years with both.
I have a 742 in 06 , 1980 , I love this rifle, if you keep the gun clean It’ll serve you well, there’s also some really good advice on UA-cam about greasing the slides properly ! Also my local gunsmith advises” NOT “ to shoot anything over 150 grain , and don’t try using it repetitive target practice . I’ve had absolutely no jamming ever , I just hunt with it , & love it ! You’ll not touch mine for $200 lol , thanks
I had a Remington custom shop woods master pump. In 280 rem. It was the very first one chambered in 280 I loved that rifle and shot 25 or more nice whitetails bucks with it. Then I lost the use of my left arm and hand in a farming accident. I could not safely rack a round into the chamber one handed so I trad3d it for a model 742 woodsmaster in 6 mm rem. Well although it is no 280. It is a really good accurate shooter and it has gotten me 5 very nice whitetail bucks in the last 4 years. I think it is a decent rifle. Never had a problem with it jamming or anything yet. And the 6 mm caliber seems to kill the deer just as dead. And just as quick with a good neck. Or heart lung shot. Just have to watch you shooting distance if there is much of a crosswind.
It is the forearm change that was to make the 742 more repeatable, hence more accurate. The 740 forearm tightened to the receiver as the forearm nut or screw were tightened to the gas block, but on the 742 they changed the bolt (screw) and threads so that when it was tightened it would actually pull the forearm piece away from the receiver slightly. When the the forearm was tightened on the 740, holding the forearm in different places would change impact vertically.
The barrel nut is what needs to be checked that it is tight, that is what can impact accuracy if it is not tight. It is in front of the receiver and needs a special 20mm wrench to fit in to correctly tighten it. The forearm is just a shroud and has nothing to do with accuracy.
There is a date code on the barrel on the left side in front of the receiver,That will tell you the date of mfg.. If there is none its a fairly new rifle 1980's of newer. Mine was made in 61 and it works great. Good follow up with 2nd shot. You got a good deal. Put some creapy crack filler in that stock to keep it from cracking more. It's used on fiberglass boat repair. Works good on rifle stocks
I just got one of these used. Cleaned it up. Oiled it. Went out shooting today. The thing kicks butt. I had read that they jam a lot, but I had no issues. I can say one thing, the magazine extraction is a bit brutal, but all in all, it was worth the $225.
They tend to jamb when dirty. When you clean it use grease, not oil. I use Lucas Red and Tacky automotive grease found at the auto parts store. It stays where you put it, oil doesn’t.
I've heard a lot of issues with jamming with this rifle. Some say it is the action others say it is worn out magazine spring not pushing fully into the loading ramp. I was given one as a kid as my first deer rifle. Never had an issue with a mis-feed but I honestly haven't shot it in 15 years and the rifle has not been shot much at all.
Many of the jamming issues came from the later 7400. It trickled down to the woodmaster because of misinformation and due to a lot of "experts" who don't know shit from shoe polish.
Have the same rifle , couple of them one in 06 and a 308 . They are not tack drivers but great deer rifles , get ya 1/4 minute of back strap every time. Ya got a great deal , paid $375 for mine few years ago . Enjoy it , good rifle .
I have owned a 742 in the past. Sold it cheap because it was wornout. Had a lot of problems with the extractor / spring working properly. Fired first shot real well, but did not pull out the spent brass and put new round in chamber most of the time. Was not predictable. Found out that issue is / was a frequent problem for these guns. Have a 740 now. Still has an extraction problem at times, but not as bad as the 742 did. Both were in 30-06.
Most States and cities- NO. Only have to fill out paperwork if you buy from a dealer, store, or federal firearms licensee. Person to person sales are allowable most places. Just make sure you get a bill of sale with previous owner (who you buy from) name & address listed
I inheirited one from my uncle. I remember going hunting with him and my dad for mulies in eastern Washington in the late 50's when I was 5 or 6. Had my dad's gun , a 740 also, but some junkie burglarized our house in the 70's and took it. But still have a lot of memories. This gun has dropped a lot of deer and a few elk in it's career. Hasn't been shot now in a couple of decades and I'm trying to find a clip and someone to work on it to get it into firing shape so I can pass it on to my son.
Mine has a flip over Leupold ... awesome return to zero & I have iron or optics ! This is my favorite riflr hands down ! The 30.06 round is so versatile there isn't a big game Animal in the world that hasn't been taken with this chamber!
Well I had two wood masters 742 li have one to a kid years back and I kept one both were great shooting guns no problem Whit them great guns if you take care of them clean oil...... from an old 76 years old man........
Decent is an understatement ! The 742 is a pure killer ! Awesome rifle & My main 1 shot 1 kill rifle ! I've killed more Deer with this rifle it is 1 shot show stopper ! never had to chase a blood trail !
There are several parts still available at Numrich and some at Brownell's and Midway USA, and it is a little tricky to take apart, the first hurdle is learning to get the action spring and tube out without getting smacked with the spring, then you need to grind up a special 3/4" open wrench to get the barrel retaining nut off.Or you can use a solid pair of vise grips but it may mark up the nut. You can find a few disassembly videos here on youtube. The 742 doesn't seem to be very durable.
@Rooster7902 I'm going tomorrow to shoot my grandpa's good 'ol Remington 740 (in 30-06). I was reading that the 742 has better accuracy over the 740 due to its modified gas system. Care to comment?
I have one coming, and a 760 as well. Made a great trade. Can't wait! The firepower of a semi-auto 30-06...Can't get much better, or more fun, than that! And the sweet part, I'll get to use my C&R for the first time on both of them. No FFL fee's for me..................( =
So how did it turn out when you put that 5 round magazine into the rifle ? lol That sir is a 4 round magazine and if it didn't jam your bolt when you put it up in the you are very lucky since most times it requires you disassembling the gun or using some can do attitude to push and pound it out of there. Like I said hopefully it didn't jam on you.
I dont know where he lives, but if hes in the US there are no "papers" that I am aware of. You get a reciept for the sale and even that is not required by law. If someone hands you a gun and says its yours and walks aways, as far as I know, if you can legally posess a gun (not a felon or crazy)..its a completely legal transaction.
Good rifle, great price. I would have jumped on that too. The rounds are easy to find. If you had gotten some exotic caliber that few people have, the cartridges would be difficult to find and expensive. Good Job.
Most of these are bargains because they are hard to clean and after a while start jamming so people think something is wrong with them and sell them when all they really need is a good cleaning. The book on these Remington rifles will say that you should take them to a gunsmith to take apart because they are difficult to work on. That is a design flaw in my opinion. What state are you in?
@MrNastytater I have an older 742 and it has the engraving on it. I think they stopped doing the engraving in 1964 to keep the cost of the gun from going up. The engraved 742s are the more sought after gun by Remington collectors. Does yours have double diamond checkering on the bottom of the forearm?
Is an Awesome gun and I love mine. Would be better if the Magazines where better and higher cap. Also be very nice if you could find ammo for them. I have 4 boxes and am afraid to shoot any more due to Not finding any to buy. Before I got down to 4 boxes, I loved to shoot this rifle. Very Fast and VERY accurate. Out performed my friends .243 pretty easy (course might have been the user). Yeah the .243 won the war but only due to issues at the start of the .244s career. But the Remington 6mm wins the battle. Have never had a single issue with it.
No you did not get ripped off. Where are you going to find a semi auto .30-06 anywhere for that price. Mine will rip out rounds as fast as I can pull the trigger and reload. Have you seen any of the tactical pistol grip buttstocks for these rifles? I have one on order for mine. Gonna be interesting. Mine was made in the 50's,,,got it from my Grandfather.
Looks to me like the dust shield has been removed or broke out...You might possibly be able to take it to a gunsmith and have a simple repair made for under $100...I bought my uncles Old 742 from my dad this past year for $300..It's the limited edition though with the engraving of the bear and deer...My uncle bought it brand new in 1963 and it had less than a box of shells shot through it,...Great shooting rifle still...
Thanks I need my new 270wood master I all ready seen on there yesterday it was sitting new on a box from about 40 years a go I was conceded a child gun dealer on the internet
You can buy a composite stock for these guns. Also at least on my 742 I put a remington 870 butstock on it, it fits perfect and makes the gun handle nice. My gun is from the 70's but I dont think they made many changes to them. Lightens it up thus making it kick even harder(these babys do kick a bit) but makes it nice for totin in the woods and wont get messed up when you get it wet.
Update on my 742 Woody. Something jammed up on the darn thing. A very small pin fell out of somewhere, so the trigger seems to be jammed up. Anyone know what I should do with this other than tear it all apart and hunt? Still a very nice rifle to shoot, but it is old.
Pull out the trigger group by tapping out the 2 receiver pins above the trigger. Once you get the trigger group out there are at least 2 tiny pins that hold the trigger and one of those may have come out.
+Brandon Lonkar I found one with white trim around it remmington model 272 automatic at yard sale for 350.00 was thininkin of buying it. came with a scope and strap
my 742 almost cost me my life ,the beer got up ,second round did not ramp up into the chamber what happened next the bear brushed me when I jumped out of the way, I hit the bottom of the clip real hard shell ramped into the chamber he circled around came back for another pass at me I shot him in the head game over ,never trust this gun again they have a problem with holding the clip properly, I know what you're all thinking it was at night I was in my shorts and he was trying to kill my dog hard to see your sights!
All guns can fail,. my Browning xbolt flipped the empty brass back in the chamber backwards and jammed my gun while shooting at an elk , had a Savage 11 do the same thing
U understand that u have to get papers for that. Because technically it is the man at the yard sales gun still. He needs to have his named cleared from that gun and have urs put on it. Besides being extremely illegal, sweet gun.

Port cover really helps keep the crap out of the bolt mechanism.
I've had mine 40 years and never taken it down. Hunt with it every year shoot it 10-20 shots a year and it has never jammed one time.

Not illegal in Texas at all. Zero restrictions on private sells. Just look in the classifieds.
1960's are finest workmanship took alot of pride making them back then.
Just inhereted this from my pops little rusty but excited to get it running. When I was a boy we use to sneak it out and shoot it. Ahhhh memories

Get a new dust cover for bolt. The fore end looks replaced. Overall great buy! Fore end is from a model 4
the 742 still had some bugs then...not half as many as ppl post on the forums about though.
The 750 has almost all of them taken care of - redesigned

No they weren't. Mine has been stone reliable. I actually take mine all apart and CLEAN IT. It never skips a beat with Remington factory ammo.
Yep that and the fact that people used the old ammo that was slightly oversized. great guns tho
Did you find it difficult to disassemble?😮
$200 is a smokin deal where i live. you never see those under $400

That a nice rifle. The 1st thing I would do is get the cracks in the buttstock fixed. They're going to get bigger, then the stock is going to split.
No it wont.
@@mikesampson3142 on a large caliber rifle, it will! Don't kid yourself!
You got a damn pretty good deal

@elpatosmith Did you find replacing that spring difficult? For me it was a pain in the butt!

I was thinking how light their recoil was when I shot mine
@@robertboyd3863 I have the 742 carbine in an 06 and it kicks like a mule so that makes a box of shells last a while.
I *think* those are actually 4 round mags.
PhD Pepper
Yup! Stuffing in 5 jams things up. You can chamber 1 & have 4 in the mag...
What kind of side mount is that?
No dust cover?
I got pretty much the same rifle for $50 less the other day, I'm looking forward to shooting it.
Where?
mine also has that same crack too
@elpatosmith i guess search for a parts breakdown for the rifle or an exploded view of the rifle parts. you could also contact remington for some help
Gun Parts . Com
here from canada you got a great deal ,
Bought same 6mm with case, redfield 3x-9, and 10 rounds for $150. Shoots great
Where?
AZ from a friend of a friend
You stole that rifle at that price , real good deal on it.
Ich führe die gleiche waffe mit einem Zeiss glas 1, 5-6x42. Top waffe, richtig sauber halten und fett benutzen dann funktionieren sie einwandfrei!!

Pull out the trigger group by tapping out the 2 receiver pins above the trigger. Once you get the trigger group out there are at least 2 tiny pins that hold the trigger and one of those may have come out.
How's it holding up?
I think you know how that crack on the stock happened.
Superhot reloads
back upheel want you money back man those hus are awesome i love em i got 2 model 7400 and 1 of those very good gun
Where can i find one
I have a 308 love it
$200 that is a steal. I paid mine at gunbroker $305. Mine have the same cracked. Mine made in 1981
They don't sell these at yard sales. Especially not for $200.
Maybe not in commiefornia.
can you tell me how the scope is mounted, i have Remington 308 woodmaster 742 and it looks identical , is it mounted on top with the small screws?.
$200 buck! wow that's a steal.....
I got mine for $75 bucks and it's in amazing condition.
Where?
WoodsMaster.... Woods...not Woodmaster
At $200 you can't afford not to buy it. Lol.
my stock is cracked in the same spot
If you handload for these. Use the M1 Garand recipes. Thank me later.
I got one just like it at a garage sale for $125.
+Brandon Lonkar I found one with white trim around it remmington model 272 automatic at yard sale for 350.00 was thininkin of buying it. came with a scope and strap

Flip a coin, you can't lose,,,,,,,,,both good calibers. I have 1 .308 and 2 .30-06's. If I had to grab one to use it would creat mass confusion.
you got a good deal...thanks
Just sent mine out for repair. Paid 400$ for it with cheap scope
it will jam with out the dust cover
Bullshit
No it doesnt
Remington 742s were nicknamed "Jam Masters" back in the day.......
Not really.
No they weren't.
The Browning BAR's were the jamamatics
U want to sale maybe
my 742 almost cost me my life ,the beer got up ,second round did not ramp up into the chamber what happened next the bear brushed me when I jumped out of the way, I hit the bottom of the clip real hard shell ramped into the chamber he circled around came back for another pass at me I shot him in the head game over ,never trust this gun again they have a problem with holding the clip properly, I know what you're all thinking it was at night I was in my shorts and he was trying to kill my dog hard to see your sights!
Put the clip in right and it wont fall out.
All guns can fail,. my Browning xbolt flipped the empty brass back in the chamber backwards and jammed my gun while shooting at an elk , had a Savage 11 do the same thing
i paid 237 for mine
U understand that u have to get papers for that. Because technically it is the man at the yard sales gun still. He needs to have his named cleared from that gun and have urs put on it. Besides being extremely illegal, sweet gun.
Your a moron
You 100% don't know what you are talking about , it damn sure is not illegal
thats an expensive boat anchor! !
