Located on a quiet residential street in Kensington, London, you might never guess that the Garden Lodge Mansion -- sitting behind an 8-foot-tall stone wall -- was the former home of one of Rock Music’s most energetic and beloved performers of all time -- Freddie Mercury. Only a few years ago, if you were visiting the outside of this landmark home, you would have seen hundreds if not thousands of sorrowful letters paying tribute to the rockstar great, pinned to the exterior wall. But over the past few years, the current owner and former lover of Freddie Mercury, Mary Austin, has taken them all down for reasons we’ll get into as we embark on our latest House Tour with a trip through the estate of Freddy Mercury.

His name is FREDDIE NOT FREDDY.
THIS IS BASIC, PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS!!!!!
@@tracievi2753 how about Freddy Kruger for your name bullie.
She said 1991
She said 1991…twice! Lol
Regards the tittle..... 500k?
😂😂😂
More like 20 millions LOL
I lived behind Freddie's house for a couple years from 2017. Never knew until today that the wonderful house I could see from my garden belonged to Freddie.
Oh wow, that's so cool
Yes I'm very sad and depressed because I love my angel's beautiful home Garden Lodge.
I stayed at the hotel at the West Cromwell Road back in the 90's, and wondered what is the wonderful manor at the backyard that could be seen from my window. Only years after I discovered that this is the place where Freddie lived in.
I remember visiting London first time last year, and suddenly as going to my hotel when landing, I looked up where Freddie's home was. I found out it was less than 15 minutes away from my stay. I took a day to go visit the home, took a photo outside. It was almost eerie and super emotional for me as it was on a sunday afternoon, same day he would have died years ago. I almost felt him there, and cried. I was so happy to just at least be able to see where he stayed last days of his life. An honor to see his videos and experience his music now even though I wish I could be alive back in the time he was alive. One of the greatest if not THE greatest performer of all time. Rest easy Freddie ❤
❤
❤
His body rested and I hope his spirit filled with wickedness is not suffering in hell. Dont get me wrong I admired the guy only his God given talent but sadly Freddie tried to forget God and that's the major cause of his downfall :) Lesson learned you should remember and always thank God in your whole life.
@@solecaring1230 Guess "Judge not lest ye be judged" means ZERO to you. That isn't your job, and you couldn't have been told that more clearly. To this day Freddie brings great joy to millions, and people say he was a charitable, kind man. I have faith that any benevolent G-d would place more value in that, than weaknesses of the body. But I, unlike you, know judging isn't my job!
@@ellenw391 YOU DON'T READ THE WHOLE CONTEXT IN THE BIBLE THAT GOD GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO JUDGE. SINCE FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT GOD INSTRUCTED MOSES TO ORGANIZE A GROUP OF JUDGES UNTIL IN THE NEW TESTAMENT PARTICULARLY IN THE BOOK OF JOHN 7:24 WHICH SAYS, "DO NOT JUDGE ACCORDING TO APPEARANCE, BUT JUDGE WITH RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT."
Freddie Mercury was more than a musician or performer. He's one of them people that will not be forgotten.
No one can beat Queen and Freddies voice, they are legendary and will forever be remembered as legends 🤘
When freddie was making his will he told Mary who was surprised "we were like a married couple darling you were going to get the house either way you have done so much its the least I could do." He trusted her the most out of everyone so much to where she is the only one who knows where he is laid to rest. "I know where I was to be put dear but wait a couple years until then. I dont want people digging me up." She will take that to her grave.
I deal in high end property and Freddie had beautiful exquisite taste. That house is beautifully furnished,in contrast to a lot of "pop stars' whose homes look like they've spent a million quid at Wallmart.
I think somewhere Fred said he felt like he was living in a museum
He was a wealthy queen from London. Of course he had good taste.
Sure you do.
@kathleenhannon8699 in the movie maybe?
I hope in time it would be open to the public like Elvis's Graceland the proceeds could go to a Aids foundation. I would love to walk through it, I've gone to Graceland twice something special being in these legends homes. I believe their spirit is still there.
Mary will likely leave it to her sons but not likely to turn it into something as tacky as Graceland.
@@nlawson946 wow that's rude
@@shonacole2124 Oh I see my error. I meant to say she'd likely leave it to her sons. I'll delete it but Graceland is still tacky.
Freddie SPECIFICALLY didn’t want that. Mary actually suggested he do that… but he didn’t want fans traipsing through his home gawking at the interior.
Graceland has become nothing but a gross, tacky joke. Freddie would NEVER want his home to be made so low-brow and pathetic.
@@shonacole2124 It IS tacky. Horribly tacky, Embarrassingly so. Freddie loved elegance and style. It would torture his spirit to have it turned into a gaudy trinket shop.
Awsome too hear that he loved cats. Cats are family
Freddie Mercury home was so tastefully decorated. If his homes walls could talk there would be some many amazing memories. This home is a major part of our musical history.
Mart stated she had to remove the letters & msgs due to all the neighbors filing complaints about the “Look” it gave to the neighborhood 😢 Rest Easy Freddie 🥀 You will live on forever through your music!
When some of the neighbours were asked about that they said they had no issue with it and it was simply Mary's decision
Yr right neighbours didn't complain Mary didn't want the fans there I know cos when I was there I saw one of the neighbours who said she stopped the fans from writing on walls and leaving flowers nothing to do with the neighbours as she didn't like it he also said she got rid of his cats not long after he died and kicked out Jim in my opinion house should be a museum for his fans
@@laurenpresley3418 Mary has been instructing that all letters, flowers etc are to be tossed in the bin from the early 90s so its nothing new.. shes a horrible witch!. In fact, shes caused other issues with neighbours and filed permit complaints to Kensington council
She got rid of the mess in the wall because it looked like shit. She should have gotten rid of it earlier.
Entitled fans wouldn’t want that crap on their own homes, yet expected Mary should tolerate it.
Mary re-homed two cats. One was aggressive with the other cats. He was given a nickname if Rambo because of his aggressive behavior. Mary re-homed him with the cat that came to GL with him.
Well, Freddie fudnt want that. It’s Mary’s home and the fact that fans thought they had the right to deface it is what Freddie would not have liked. And she didn’t get rid of the cats!
There's very little footage of the actual house. It's not fit to be called a tour. It's been Mary's home longer than most of you have been alive. You kids who learned about Queen from a Netflix movie should understand that Mary has owned the house longer then Freddie did now
To be honest, I'm pretty sure most of us have already seen these pics (and more). But guess it's "anything for clicks Darling." PS I also hope all those kids listen carefully to Freddie singing "Love of my Life." It wasn't just a beautiful song. It was a love letter to Mary. Or listen to what he said about her in many interviews.
Hear, hear!
I think young people all knew about Queen before the movie.
Behold, the 50 year old hipster. Wants recognition for knowing queen longer than the rest.
Freddie was the legend
Freddie was true legend 💝
I think regarding the wall she is completely well in her right to remove any of the items pinned/left on the wall. As much as it’s in a nice thought etc. It’s her property at the end of the day.
Plus, imagine if you lost the person closest to you, would you like to see the constant reminder of them passing every time you left your house?
Her voice cuts through me like ragged glass in my ears, she is no voice over Queen at all
The house must be worth £15 million plus now.
What fabulous taste Freddie had - not surprised at all!
I'm amazed Mary allowed the fans to leave tributes that long. This was NO Graceland. It was not a museum, but as Freddie wanted, it still was a family home. I adored Freddie, but Mary has taken far more grief than she deserves. The UK IMHO did a major disservice to him when they refused a statue, which would have been a real place for fans to go and honor his legacy. Brian and Roger tried their best, and ultimately put it in Montreux, Switzerland.
At least for years there was the one they had at the theater marquee during the 12 year run of the musical, We Will Rock You (now residing in Roger Taylor's back garden lol). But the Montreux statue is stunning, captures Freddie perfectly, and everyone in Britain should be furious they wanted no part of a lasting tribute to this most brilliant talent!!
Freddie Mercury is a Legend and will be :). Nice video! :)
Where the wall is concerned, there are likely codes that she has to follow in keeping it maintained and not littering the rest of the neighborhood.
Bullsh*t! I think they'd make an exception. I think she did that out of spite!
@@aimlessbauer9082 Not spite. After all she loved him. I know she said neighbors were filing complaints because it cheapened their home value...but who really knows.
Maybe she's been trying to move on all these years and can't. We all must move one. Can't keep sticking up messages for eternity. He's gone.
@@Cheryl-ke4pp neighbors also complain on noisy fans visiting (mostly while in groups and noisy) :) so I guess you're right about it.
November 24,1991 RIP Freddie Mercury
The jacuzzi wasn't on the 1st floor of GL, but in de basement of the Mews, next to GL. It remains unknown for whom he wrote Love of My Life.
Exactly! Love of my life was not written for her. He said he wrote it for no one and simply made it up
Except he told people she was the love of his life. So, there is that.
He also said he’d rather go to hell than heaven. Do you believe that?
Mary is the one who found this home for Freddie. She overseed the three years of renovation and helped him decorate the entire house. He left it to her and everything in it. She kept everything exactly as he left it and in perfect condition.30 plus years later and his possesions were autioned off and proceeds went to aids charities. This was Mary's right to do so
She should have donated it as a museum for his fans. She certainly doesn’t need the money. IMO
For a few years now they have put up a piece of perspex along the wall so things can be put on it or behind it.
Years back there used to be some steps in the Mews that you could go up and look into Freddie’s Garden but Mary had them removed around 2000
I understand how Mary feels about leaving the letters on the wall. I mean it's not like Freddie is going to read them.
7 cats in a 5 bedroom house
Definitely feel him on the fur babies
The gaff must still stink of cats
@@stephenedwards382 Of course not! If you care for your cats, even for yourself, family and sanity your house won’t smell like litter. It’s actually not hard to clean up behind them. I have to assume you may have encountered the ‘other’ type.
This house has eight bedrooms that's what Peter Freestone said
@@lucilleconsenza8239 I understand, I have 5 bedrooms and 7 cats. 6 rooms if counting the large closet turned into litter box room.
Most of these huge rockstars have giant houses, but Freddie kept it more simple. But also 500k is a lot more back in the 80s, so it may not have been so simple then.

If the house was built in the 1900s, it’s the 20th century.
it would be nice if she could open it up to the public like Graceland.
I know I was thinking the same thing, that would be awesome if people could torn his home.
Nobody lives at Graceland is why it's open for tours ...she still lives at Garden Lodge, you dont open your house to the public while you still live there
the house looks so sad without freddie and Jim 💔
I wonder why Mary never gives any interviews. Of course, I respect that, but it's like we would all like to know how she is doing and hear some of her memories.

At the time of Freddie’s death his house was valued at £4,000,000.00 and at 2021 prices it wil be in the region of £10,000,000.00.
He bought it for £500,000 in 1980, adjusted for inflation that's about £2.2M in 2020.

Not really. House tour. A few old stills and short blurry clips.
Mary was more than justified in her decision to stop the fans collective homage to Freddie. It became a horrific bit of vandalism defacing the property. That is not love and respect for anything
I agree. It's selfish and self indulgent for 'fans' to put up letters and whatever on the walls of Garden Lodge.
Those 'fans' should put up a shrine to Freddy in their own homes, instead of vandalizing the wall.
I can understand Mary's exasperation , she had to put up with the squalid sight for too long.
It was 1991 he died not 1981
This video should be taken with a pinch of pure scepticism. First of all he wasn't British. He was born on Zanibar by parsi parents. But he did make Britain his. Flea markets? Try Japanese auction catalogues. He bought the house in 1980 and moved in in 1985, he didn't buy it in 86.
Zanzibar is a British possession at the time. His parents moved there because his father work as a cashier sent him there to work
And the height of Queen's popularity was in 1986? Also, he bought this house earlier than 1986. Learn before you speak!
I lived near his mum in Nottingham
Hoy vale 👍 mucho más 🐣pero es de Mary y ese amor 🧡 no tenía precio creo yo
I have no doubt that Mary has kept it the same all these years. I get the impression she has never moved on and probably never will. It's sad.

Why sell the Mansion Turn it in to a tourist attraction 👍🏻👍🏻
can u do rebel wilson or charlie puth next
Your voice is like a horror movie
VOCAL FRYYYYYY
Can u do one on Barry Manilow? And Ray Harryhausen?
I think Mary should have used the house as some sort of museum in memory of freddie and his legacy instead of moving in and fighting the fans years later as the Presleys did with Graceland
Why should Mary Austin care what people think SHE should do with HER home? Maybe Mary should weigh in on how fans should set up their Last Wills and Testaments.
And this one time, at bandcamp
Deceiving video...
This was not a tour it was pictures and clips from other videos.
Where disabire green dor??????
I understand some people we should never get the 📅 of his death wrong. & Kensington Square. Freddie said " if I can have & afford & allowed to have a
Pyramid In Kensington Square. I will have it, I have it I worked darn for it"
I understand like why put tape and paper on someone’s building. People in london throw their rubbish everywhere. At my house I had to put a sign up saying “ this is not a public bin!! Can you please not put rubbish in my hedge, if you can’t be bothered to use your legs to walk around the corner to the bin, please put it in the recycling box Infront of you” must say it’s a lot tidier people have actually read the sign and used my box.

Mary treated Freddie’s husband Jim like crap, kicking him out of this house (where he had lived with Freddie for many years-and cared for him when he was ill) soon after Freddie died. She also wouldn’t let Jim come back to take certain art he collected with Freddie or some cats. She was cruel. She should have established the home as a public space so visitors could pay tribute to Freddie and see his beautiful art and garden. It literally turns my stomach knowing she lives there and how she treated Jim.
Freddie left clear instructions in his will one of the 3 guys who was also Freddie’s PA and was told to move out of garden lodge that Freddie had left them plenty of money to relocate, he also said Freddie was in the music business he was well aware that verbal promises of a house was absolute crap Freddie was very detailed in his will and that he wanted Jim and the rest of them to move out and start fresh Jim may have picked out art and China for the house but it was Freddie who paid for it if he wanted him to have the house he would have put it in writing he knew that
Totally agree with you.. shes a nasty piece of work. Theres so much to her that people dont know. Shes definitely NOT saint Mary
The men who lived at the lodge each were given a significant amount of money and three months to move. Mary never kicked them out. Period. In order for the legal transfer of ownership, the home had to be unoccupied. By the way, if I was dying and confined to my bed, and my lover was going out to gay bars (and likely hooking up) while I was Ill, I wouldn’t leave him anything, but Freddie was a generous man. Mary, the men who lived in the lodge, and his friend Dave Clark, all nursed Freddie until he died. Contrary to Jim’s book of fiction, Dave Clark, not Jim, was at his side when he passed. I would love just once for these comment strings to contain info from people who actually knew what they were talking about. PS. Mary still lives in Garden Lodge. If you see her leaving the Mews, it is because it is how she exits the Lodge to get to her car.
Its called jalousy
No. Freddie effectively made them all leave. Why do you think he bought those properties for them? For kicks? No. He was giving them a big push to move out! Why did he offer severance pay? That’s end of employment pay! He gave them £500,000 tax free yet it apparently wasn’t enough . Jim Hutton lied because he was angry he didn’t get more.
Green dor!!!!
If it was built in 1908 that is the 20th century
that would not cost a small forture to clean not that you even need to clean it
Hey Mary. Don’t forget the reason you have that house in the first place. Freddy had a huge loving fan base. Not allowing them to express themselves is a bad character move on your part. Doesn’t suprise me though. At all
Leaving messages on paper of condolences and tribute soon after he died is one thing, defacing someone’s home for almost 30 years is not paying homage to the previous owner, it is disrespectful, what other past celebrity home has this happened to….it is not a grave site or memorial it is a private home….time to move on. There are plenty of other ways one can express themselves and pay tribute.

Hi
Hello
Came for a "house tour" ,left with a wasted total of 10 mins of my life.
He was Indian
His girlfriend was totally clueless....Hope she burns in hell for tearing down the letters, covering up the graffiti & other peoples heartfelt items, that likely got thrown out or painted over. Imagine if Elvis would have done the same thing ??...Guessing $$$ was her only goal...Burn...Burn...Burn....In my opinion
The house belongs to a trust but Mary was given it to live until she dies. Also they filmed the film in that very own house
Incorrect. Mary was asked if filming could take place inside GL and she declined the request per Freestone. He was brought on as a SME on rebuilding the rooms on soundstages to which he said were very realistic to the smallest detail. There are many rumors as to why she declined the request, I can’t say I blame her though. Whether she lives in the home full time or not, all of the equipment needed and the time and personnel required would no doubt be extensive. It’s better the rooms be rebuilt on a soundstage built for such purpose. All of the antiques were irreplaceable if anything should have happened to them. Freddie was very meticulous when it came to GL, and I don’t think he would have allowed access in life so Mary honored those wishes in death. It’s also a very posh neighborhood for other people and families who would probably not have appreciated the extra traffic and noise that would have accompanied such a production.
That's wrong
No tour. Don’t waste your time
