An absolute pleasure to watch this video. It brings the house to life in a way that pictures cannot. When I saw Freddie’s baseball shoes, my heart skipped a beat and I felt a profound sense of loss although I obviously didn’t know Freddie on a personal level. I fully understand why Mary sold his “clutter”(his words)and is now selling his(or should I say HER ) house. She faithfully kept it for over thirty years, and it is now time to move on. Good luck to her and best wishes.

Thank you very much Sound and Vision for showing us very beautiful and unique items that Freddie had collected throughout his lifetime.
I pray that every item that people have, will cherish and take special care, of whatever item or items, each person bought.
As for Garden Lodge, I pray the buyer treats it with alot of love and honor.

Thank you for posting this beautiful video that Sotheby's did when they were chosen to handle the sell Freddie's things. I only wished they hadn't put a filter on the lens to make it old-looking. Garden Lodge is as beautiful today as I'm sure it was during FM's life so why not celebrate all the colors of the magnificent items he hand-picked to decorate his home? He had exquisite expensive tastes, that's for sure! I know from pictures I've seen of an article that Mary did not long after he died, she was standing by the piano and it was full of pictures. Not sure if they were pictures she had placed there specifically for the pictures in the article or if they were put there by Freddie, but I noticed they were no longer there in any of the Sotheby's photographs.

He had Mary, his sister, his parents, his boyfriend (deceased since Jan 1, 2010), and his 3 helpers at his home. He left all of them $$$$. Mary's 2 sons don't automatically get Garden Lodge; they probably didn't want it; they're now in their 30s and on their own.

This is precious! As crowded with 'stuff' as any Edwardian parlour, and very much reflective of 1980s opulence too. I can't help but think that were he still with us, Freddie would quite likely have embraced minimalism by now and thrown the whole lot out! As it is, a snapshot of a decade or so in Freddie's life, or at least, of the environment in which much of it was lived..

Opulence and excess of the 80s? I thought 8os were about post-modern lofts of brick and chrome. This house is classic and timeless, in my humble opinion. Freddie was minimalist in dresses, that’s true. No accessories like wristwatch, jewellery, ties, scarfs, etc. It very well may be that he would have sold out much of his stuff by now anyway.

Freddie's been gone for 33 yrs, and during that time the house was kept as he decorated it. Freddie left it to Mary to do with as she pleased; there was no requirement she turn the house into a museum and retain all his belongings. If Freddie had wanted a museum, he could have specifiied it in his will. He made no such arrangements. The house all alone like it is, feels lonely. I don't believe Mary had lived there for several years; her sons are all grown up & have their own lives. It must have felt sad for Mary, being in that house with only memories left, during the years she did reside at Garden Lodge.

Mary's an older woman now, in her late 70s, sons grown. It was up to her to decide what to do. Freddie could have put in his will his house was to become a museum and all furnishings were to be left in the house, forevermore, but he didn't; he gave the house and half his estate to Mary to do with as she wanted. It's not like she immediately got rid of all his stuff & sold the house. 30+ years is a long time before deciding it's time to sell to a new owner.

@@crimson25543yes. I think she did do all she could to hang onto it for so many years. I’m sure she feels she’s able to let go if it now and have a quieter simpler life. Over time you grieve and you see that no matter how many years you hang onto someone’s beloved possessions, it can never bring them back again. In the immediate wake of someone’s passing I think having their things brings quite a bit of comfort and makes you feel closer to the to them but over time you realize how little those things mean once you accept that they’re gone. They just leave behind empty stuff. I have perfume that my best friend who died used to wear. Still to this day when I smell it, it’s like she’s right there. But more so, It just leaves this feeling of longing that they were here. I really hope there’s an afterlife. Because this is some bs.

@@debra2700 Oh, I do hope so too. I vaguely think I heard she wasn't well, but again, unsure where I heard it or how reliable my memory might be on it. I did ask someone that knew her, and they were not forthcoming with information, quite understandably.
I met her once, back in '73, along with F and Roger at their Kensington Market stall. Roger - ever the self-promoter/ chat-up artist! - was telling me all about their wonderful band. (They had F's original artwork for the Queen Crest pinned to the wall, and not knowing what is was I'd asked about the symbolism of it, and tried to buy it!).
But I do remember being particularly struck by how supportive Mary was, at that point when the band was still relatively unknown. With their first album finally completed and due for release in two weeks time it was clear they truly believed they were destined for great things, and it seemed to me M felt very much a part of that journey, fully behind the boys, as if it were a joint project.
I think that Victorian portrait ("A Kind of Beauty"??) shown right at the beginning of this video looks so much like Mary; I'd love to know if F thought so too and whether that's why he bought it!

@@papercup2517 How thrilling to have met them! All of the lovely things you said is why I get so upset when Jim Hutton that Johnny Come Lately gets so much credit for being the person who finally made Freddie happy. Mary loved and financially supported Freddie Bulsara so he could pursue his dream and stayed with him through thick and thin as Freddie stated but to so many fans it was Jim who showed up a handful of years before a very wealthy and famous Freddie Mercury's death who gets credit while Mary is maligned because of all of the lies Jim told about her. I'm so glad that Freddie left her everything and trusted her with his ashes. I'm so jealous that you got to see them together and I agree, Freddie would have seen his lovely Mary in that portrait.

Wonder how much the decor might have changed if Freddie had lived. he may have wanted to go more modern and have lots of grey which seems to be a popular colour these days.

Because it (the house and everything in it) belonged to her after Freddie's death. Freddie bequeathed half his estate + his house + all the furnishings to Mary. She kept everything intact for over 30 years! She's in her 70s now, this was obviously the right time for her to sell and let a new owner enjoy the estate.

She's now in her 70s so she more than met the requirements. Estates of deceased entertainers get sold all the time (Michael Jackson, Merv Griffin, Whitney Houston, etc), sometimes right after a death, and fans don't throw tantrums over it. But in this case...there's a level of entitlement not seen elsewhere. Fans could have chosen to purchase the house and all the things in the house had they come up with the $$$$$$$ and made a deal with Mary to buy it all. Then they (fans) could have turned G.L. into a museum if that's what they wanted.
