@@paulahuguley6122 Paula, I hope Robin responds with his view of this. If I may be so bold, and it does seem like your "searching," I can share, as someone that took a vow of "poverty and service," well over a decade ago now, that it much depends on where "you are" in your own life's journey. I'm finishing the design and build of a traditional timber frame restaurants for friends of mine currently. They had a need, I have the skills, I will make no "profit" from this at all, nor have I taken anything beyond the "needs" of daily life during its design and fabrication. I presently have $180 to my name, no bank accounts at all, no cell phone (never have had one nor like them)...clothes I tailor and/or make myself, a few documents, and tools to work...that is all. In the last 6 years I have had and made less than $12K "all in" for actual "cash," and the rest "gifts" of food, places to stay while I work and to repair/replace a tool I may need to accomplish this work. When I "travel" if it is "wilderness based" then I will carry and "emergency fund." This has (so far) never exceeded $2K to a "safe place" to recover from whatever has disrupted my travels (has not happened yet...but I am getting older...LOL) Food is "wild harvested" and/or gifted by a patron whom I've finished a project for, and soon it will be an extremely low "pension payout" which may force me to leave the country as you simply can't live in America on this low of an income when not able to work due to age and you wish to travel too, or be of value to others. I have traveled before, and wish to see the Buddhist temples of Asia once again before I pass if possible as well as my father's land of Eastern Europe. That is a "glimpse" into a life similar to Robin's, but the important part is, none of us "need" as much as we think and most things are "wants...not needs." Letting go of attachments and coveting is a very hard thing for most humans to do. Part of the reason "relationships" do not work today either between friends or "life partners" is the loss of the ability to "be alone" and at peace with one's self while not "coveting" what others have. The easiest way I have helped others get there is to live a "handmade life" and if that "thing" that is outside the scope of your "biological needs" is not made by you, or someone who is also a "maker" then you probably don't really "want it" and certainly don't "need it." Best of luck on your journeys...

i must admit that it will not be a happy thing for us to watch u give away all your things. U clearly take great pride and intentionality about what u buy and own. I see no need.to give it all away
But if u feel it is something u need to do...then i believe that your friends will step in to take care of u.

I am 58 years old with some undiagnosed problem with details that keeps me from working. I keep an eye on my grandkids for no compensation except a place to stay, but my dream is to live outdoors. My kids don't agree, but I have downsized to a rolling bag, a tent and mat, and a shoulder bag for food. I am expected to stay here as "free" childcare, guilted into it, but in a few years, I intend to move out. I may slowly transition to the all-natural fibers, but just downsizing helps me to have less mental confusion. One day, maybe when I am 65, I want to adopt a "follow the sun" lifestyle. Seeing you live so free and natural gives me hope and validates my inner heart desire, something I don't get from family.

Robin, I had a flashback while watching this video. At one point in my life, when I was single and had just moved to the States, I was switching roommates, and everything I owned fit in the trunk of my car. It was such an easy move, and it felt so good. Now, we're a family of four with a dog, a cat, and a goldfish. This all still feels good, but not as light. Moving is no longer so easy. You've inspired me to downsize and own less-more like right-sizing. Thank you. Good luck on your journey!

I spend a lot of my spare time in running a not for profit, fighting for recognition of tiny home ownership in Australia. Our building industry is the most regulated and expensive in the developed world. I fight for the right of shelter that is sustainable and affordable.

Hi Robin...As always, this was wonderful...!!!...For readers of this comment, I could not stress more the "teachings" of any "minimalist" way to live and what Robin is reflecting in his videos are simply excellent...
I've lived simply and traditionally most of my life of six plus decades, and Robin's path reflects well to others that we never "need" as much as we think and most things are "wants...not needs." Below are some of my key observations that sparked a thought and comment...
09:40 I personally am very "clean" and complemented often on my "scent" and professional appearance. I do not "bath" in the modern sense of the word...at all!!!...with sun and essential oils being all that goes on my skin for the most part. Soap and modern "sanitising" of your body removes all the natural flora and fauna we are born with...and that keeps us healthy...NATURALLY!!!
10:20 Be a "maker" as Robin is so brilliantly demonstrating. I tailor and/or make all my own clothes...or they are a gift from someone who is typically a "maker" themselves. "Style" and being "in fashion" is a modern construct and attachment. Pick..."your own style"...and others will "see you" better or atleast the people that matter. I'm much more "old school and formal" in my attire, than Robin, but also have the skills found within the sartorial arts to accommodate that type of wardrobe. Functional but still stylish, though out of date for most "modern consumer" perspectives...
15:00 This is a marginal "sewing kit" and Robin has things he does not need, and things that would make it easier perhaps but the kit he does have clearly reflects just how minimal tooling you need to maintain clothing of his style...
28:10 I still don't have, carry nor ever want a cell phone, but I do have a gifted laptop but no camera either. I love that he has covered the "modernity" with cloth, and I do the same as he is most correct that the "look and texture" of these modern elements can be disruptive to folks that become more and more attuned to just being around "natural things." It is not "hiding" as much as "masking" for the sake of peace of mind, eye and tactile feel...
53:15 This was an important lesson to anyone thinking about human powered "travel," as the romantic notion of "backpacking" is to often an illusion and not a reality in the slightest...!!!...I state that as a working wilderness guide and someone that has lived most of their lives, to some degree or another, out of "pack" or "box." Modern "backpacking" is horrible for the body and simply not the way indigenous humans traveled long distances at all. We either traveled by water (my preferred method still to this day) or with a traditional "wagon/cart" or "Travois," which is simple to make and used even in mountainous areas to some degree. The fact that Robin is "carting" his belongings and essentials is extremely wise and his body will thank him for it later in life...
Blessings Robin for what you role model for others...

For firestarting: if you can get your hands on a ferro rod, that's basically a more efficient flint and steel, and if you need a good cheap firestarter that catches easily, jute rope is REEEEALLY good. You just have to untangle it into a "birds nest" and it works wonders. Also, dried cattail is a great natural substitute that also catches easily.

Really enjoy your content and respect what you do. I found you rather recently, within the year. I moved to the Pacific Northwest and have changed my life radically in less than a year. I made a big lifestyle shift to living more sustainably and now do things I would’ve laughed at or made fun of a year ago. I’ve switched to non toxic products from skincare to cleaning to an entirely thrifted natural fiber wardrobe to natural fiber bedding, etc. I shop nearly entirely locally or small business, and love my refill shop I visit weekly to stock up on some goods. I volunteered for the first time and did a work trade on a farm and saw first hand how incredibly laborious but rewarding farming was. I am still discovering new ways to live sustainably, but I’ve done my best to ensure that what I put on my skin is also safe to put in our water streams on the earth, and that what I wear and sleep in can fully biodegrade naturally in this earth. Even camping taught me how little I actually needed and how much I enjoyed just the discovery of nature to keep me going. I appreciate all you do and really respect the choice you have made to truly stick to an incredibly beautiful life that is full of more purpose and meaning than modern life. You have truly made it a mission to thrive and INSPIRE in a society that actively oppresses each of us. Thank you for that.

I started to travel by bike only 10 days ago, from Strasbourg to Spain/Portugal. I've stopped my rent in Strasbourg, inspired partly by you to let go of more possessions. I unfornutanely bought a few more synthetic things to travel, a good sleeping bag, bike bags and gear, and some clothes and shoes. I regret some of these purchases, I still need to shed more things, it's still very heavy. Just now I gave away a battery pack I had. Next time I do a wwoofing, I'll go through everything and give away more things.
I would love to do some of my clothes, I must say I don't know where and how I can start, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for that opportunity. I travelled barefoot and hitchiked a lot last month in Corsica, but now that temperatures go near 0°C, I need more clothes.
Thank you to be an amazing inspiration for me, I hope to go much further, mostly with natural materials and foraging. I downloaded your last book, and started reading it, I'll review and pay once I'm done.

All very excellent. I love glass jars as well and use as many as I can in the house ... from items I buy, of course, reusing the jars that held products.
I can feel your joy with your current possessions and with your current trip.
I have a few thoughts ... they may or may not be interesting to you (maybe not with your desire to have complete "non ownership):
Although you seem to be committed to glass, I think maybe a nice Nalgene-type bottle or two might be a good addition or replacement. Yes, plastic ... but pretty good, high-quality plastic that lasts. They hold as much as a quart jar, they are more durable (generally "unbreakable"), lighter, and would also serve the purpose of "hot water bottle" as well.
I understand it's not biodegradable, but glass is also difficult to "compost."
We also have "biodegradable" plastic-seeming plates and bowls made from wheat straw or hearts of palm so we can break them up and compost them when we have used them beyond what seems appropriate. One of the issues, however, with "wheat straw plastic" is that they contain an allergen --- wheat --- so those with celiac disease shouldn't use them.
I wouldn't worry about your use of tech or electronics ... you are VERY judicious with it and it's a wonderful way to keep in good contact with those of us who follow your journey.
I'm glad to see you don't feel guilty about your electric razor --- everyone needs a few items that make life easier and with all you do, a quick, easy shave is nice. Have you ever considered a "gyroscopic," pull-string razor? My husband has one he takes on backpacking trips. He has a pretty heavy beard and likes to be clean-shaven, so it's probably not a good everyday solution for him, but for those who need a quick "clean up," I think it might work. I think I bought it new for him several years ago from Vermont Country Stores or somewhere like that, but I see most of them available online are "vintage" offered on eBay and places like Mercari, so it may be difficult to find one .... they don't require any other energy or charging.
The other thing we like to use is a refillable butane lighter. They are a little larger than disposables, flame up a lot more if you like (or not) and faster so you can light a fire faster, and they are more durable, the butane comes in a metal can to refill the lighter so it's a maybe a little more "earth friendly" than disposable plastic lighters.
Just keep on doing what you feel ... I will never reach (nor do I really want to) your level of commitment to so few possesions and the simple life that you have, I just don't think it's for me, but I am enjoying your journey ... not just your CURRENT journey, but your entire journey.

    • @tianikane3312

There is a walk from Townsville to Healesville in Victoria; many people have done it over the years. We have done part of it, and would love to do the whole thing at some point in time. We walked from Cadiz in Spain to Compostella in one trip, then added on a few more walks after that. 1600 kms. It is a time of life of simplicity with living out of a pack on our back and very enjoyable. We have done quite a few long distance pilgrimages but then as we have aged, we realise that there are issues that need to be covered in our older age (70 years). Friends of ours have had strokes or broken bones, and are no longer able to fend for themselves, so now they are dependent on others. Not having insurance (health) or an exit plan from this lifestyle is a great risk. Maybe that's what his death beans are all about. Will have to watch that video.

    Whyyyy LA, California?
I haven't been there in 54 years, and even then at the greyhound bus depot with a baby, I was constantly bothered by a pimp. 😂

      Hello Dear Sylvia,
I planned this particular journey around the rainy season. The few rain spells we've had I've watched for and bunkered down for them.
I'll be south of the rainy region within a few weeks.
I may have some serious rain coming soon though.
In summary, I stay under cover most of the time for substantial rain, and I now have a poncho.
      love,
      Robin

My night time tea varies depending on whether I'm foraging, purchasing or receiving it as a gift. I drink many sleepy time herbs, with chamomile being a staple.
Ginger, mint, bee balm are staples.
My mushroom tea is chaga, reishi, turkey tail and maitake when I'm in the flow.

"Surrender to outcomes". Well put. I can understand. Having a bit more faith in people around you is the only way to go, if you're choosing this type of lifestyle and philosophy. Owning lots of valuable stuff brings a lot of worries regarding of loosing it. Robin owns nothing valuable except the laptop and camera and thst 310 dollars. If those and related chargers are with him inside of grocery, loosing the bag is most likely not the end of the world. 😊

I would live too have both pairs of shoes like yours. I made a pair of crocheted fitted slippers that could have leather soles. added too them. And I crochet wool balykavas for friends during winter weather.
