@@Claythargic I first heard Ocean Size on KISW. The DJ said something like "this band is the new Guns N Roses". The song sounded nothing like GNR, but by the time it was over I got it. Then, as the station was promoting a rising star concert headlines by JA, I first heard Soundgarden (Flower) and got my first clue that the big city 20 minutes from my home wasn't quite the nowhere years of sports futility and personal isolation had led me to believe. I'm sure it has a fair amount to do with why I never left the area.
I agree. I was a metal kid. And this turned me on cause it was alternative, but with cranked up guitars. Totally different than anything I was used to at that point. I still listen to this album often
I LOVE that Lex caught the vibe as we all did in 1988. I’m often frustrated that Brad often (not just this song) focuses so heavily on the lyrics. Sometimes you just gotta close your eyes and let the wave take you away and not ask questions as to why.
I commend Brad for trying. He really appears to try. But yes, Lex gets it. Janes is a different kind of group. The “lyrics” are mostly in the actual music. You can’t understand it by interpreting the words
Janes Addiction was a game changer. They revolutionized music in the late eighties and moved everyone into the nineties. Probably the most innovative band I've ever heard. The perfect mix of alternative and hard rock.
In 88' was was 20 yrs old and sharing a house with three friends at Indiana University. One of my housemates was the music critic for the school newspaper and he got an early release of Nothings Shocking. At first I didn't know what to think but it was interesting. I'll never forget one day I put the cassette in the house jam box while doing dishes and it clicked. I was hooked and soon the rest of my housemates were also. Today I consider it one of the top 5 groundbreaking rock albums of all time.
Their production values and Dave Navarro's guitar style were SO unique, especially for that time period. I loved it, some didn't, but you would never mistake a JA song for anyone else!
My fav JA song is “3 days” followed by “then she did” & “Mt Song”. But 3 days is just such a vibe. I’m not even the biggest fan of guitar solos, (I prefer all the instruments to work together towards making a great song instead of one instrument trying to outshine the rest), but I actually really like the guitar solo in 3 days.
@@that44rdv4rk Agreed, when I first got the album I think I liked side A better but the older I got the more I liked side B... still one of my favourite albums..
3 Days is so good. I only knew the Janes Addiction radio hits from alternative radio in the 90s but never gave their albums a listen. Then I found this cool guy named DJ Frane who mixes and samples a lot of stuff, and he sampled the bassline to 3 days and I had to find it. Now I blast that shit in my truck often, amazing song.
Remember the time period - this is late 80's when MTV was awash in hair bands - Jane's Addiction was building a grass roots following with their style of alternative rock. This was before the Seattle grunge scene exploded. It's only when i look back in time when i can appreciate how they were a "weather vane" for music and where it was soon headed. I loved the alt-rock scene of the early 90's and this band was ahead of its time.
Brad said it best. It’s a lot to take in. Jane’s Addiction was so different for its time in the late 80’s. Although Nirvana was more popular, Jane’s addiction predates them by a few years and helped create the audience for grunge
If you like Jane's Addiction you have to check Porno For Pyros (Perry Farrell's band after Jane's Addiction break up). "Pets" and "Tahitian Moon" are interesting both in sound and lyrics so I think you'll enjoy them.
Bali Eyes is beautiful...Cursed Female is tragic...both are outstanding as well. Perry's got some good solo stuff as well! Check out "To Me" or "Happy Birthday Jubilee" from his (good all the way through) solo album!
Yeah I was the biggest JA fan. So of course I had to follow Pornos, but honestly there's no comparison to the 2. But pornos was cool as shit. They were different as well bro
Lex is right on the money, this song is exactly like cleaning your boat! You know you have to wash the salt water off your boat every time you take it out on the ocean. And Janes had a song on the same album called Ocean Size. Eerie!
Ha ha, I was just going to comment that it's ironic she mentioned the boat and a large body of water. I think Ocean Size is the song right before this one on side one.
I couldn’t post fast enough! My absolute favorite JA song! I saw them about 33 years ago and they blew me away. I didn’t know what I was walking into. These guys have gone through quite a few transformations but this era and album in particular will always be the best. Love me some JA!
No joke, I saw them open for Love & Rockets right before the first album dropped and my jaw hit the floor. To this day it stands out as one of the coolest things I have ever experienced
Boat cleaning music! lol Lex is so funny and cool. This song was from the mid '80s! That's right, this song was mid 1980s! Proto-grunge music! Pre grunge, very raw, early years. Surf/skate punk kind of music. Punk rock music inspired, alternative rock. Noise rock! They were college radio and alternative radio station darlings. Like REM, RHCP, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Sioxsee and the Banshees, Gang of Four, Joy Division/New Order, Dinosaur JR, Suicidal Tendencies, The Cure, Husker Du, etc were back then, bands way ahead of their time. You almost never hear their songs on regular radio stations during the '80s, and were only on very late night MTV videos. . Groups like them back in the 80s, helped usher in punk/grunge, alternative rock, indie rock into the mainstream during the late '80s, early'90s (this was when hair bands were kind of becoming stale) . There was a huge explosion of bands like this during that time that broke through the mainstream. Janes Addiction was one of the big influences for things to come for alt rock during the '90s/'00s. Janes Addiction was a great '80s/'90s band from LA, California They eventually split off, another band ('90s) Porno for Pyros was formed, same singer, Perry Farrell. they did been caught stealing already, although i believe without the video, i agree then she did is amazing and one of their best, but i think it maybe a little advanced, i think they need a couple more janes songs under their belt first such as three days, ted just admit it, classic girl, would for you, pigs in zen, or 'ocean size' which would have fit Lex's boat analogy even better but i kinda get it this song has a bit of that same feel.
@@dominrael8658 You arent wrong! That's what makes this a fun discussion. I LOVE Mountain Song, but it's not one of the first I would pick for new users to make reaction videos out of. When I saw this video on MTV in the 80's...I was blown away. One of my all time fav's! I got to see them at lollapalooza 1 (with ice-t)... you had to be there I guess😎
This album was a breath of fresh air. I belive the video for this song was played at the end of Headbanger's Ball late one Saturday night in 1988. My crew saw the video and all got the album shortly after. Opened up our ears to entire new sonic avenues.
Love this song. Maybe my favorite Jane's' song. It reminds me of late summer in LA at the beach. Very late summer, surfer vibes. But a boat will do as well.
Funny story, back in the 80s when I was listening to the cassette 'Nothing's Shocking' for the first time while I was cleaning my boat, my girlfriend surprised me with some fish & chips and we had a picnic on the beach. They released a live album around the same time with a cool cover of the Rolling Stone's 'Sympathy for the Devil'. May be worth a listen...
A post Punk type sound, higher treble like Punk but a more hard rock guitar sound. When they came out in the late 80's, their unique sound just seemed like the next natural step for the time. i can't really explain it any other way. 'Up the Beach/Ocean Size' is a must 'react to'.
Yes! I like nd can listen from start to finish. That one nd The Great Escape Artist get heavy rotation in my player. "Curiosity Kills" "Irresistible Force" nd so on.
In college in 1990 I would spend all night in the art studios listening to this album on repeat. (Seriously. You gotta listen to this whole album beginning to end, non-stop) Cleaning a boat? o.O Wow. Lex really comes up with some interesting and specific song feelings and interpretations.
This song sounds like standing with each foot on opposite sides of a small rowboat in the ocean. This song, speaking literally, states that the narrator is coming down the mountain (like a prophet from the ecstatic moment of epiphany) and meets some smackheads. He shares the same opinion as them. He declares that holding back your authentic self ultimately ends in pain and destruction. He says to let your real self out, unleash and share your individuality and unique talents and characteristics with the world. Then he snidely, world-wearily says, "Cash in!" Sell your uniqueness, your creativity, your "soul" to the economic machine.
I'm so glad you came across Jane's Addiction and especially The Mountain Song. You need to go into the depths of this band and and the raw energy and emotional rollercoaster ride. All amazing musicians and Perry's lyrics are incredible.
Jammy, I think "To Bring You My Love" is a sweet little Satanic ditty, such a great Luciferian love song, that it should be covered. In all seriousness that is something I shouldn't say but it seems to be true. It's quite beautiful but it's demonic. I really should leave music like that alone.
One of the greatest bands ever...you covered 2 bands his week that I saw at the first ever Lollapalooza....Jane's Addiction and Siouxsie and the Banshees ...what a show

First saw Jane's Addiction, they were the opening act for Love And Rockets. They started off weird and just got weirder. Nothing's Shocking is awesome.
Lex picks up on 90s music really well. The video would have been a more entertaining reaction if you thought the music was weird but this is a song about being a badass.
Saw Jane's at The Bowery Ballroom in '89, dancing transvestites, fire eaters, explosions, then it got dangerous...😂 they were/ are a spectacle, truly one of a kind.
Greetings from New England..Oh yeah I haven't heard this song in yrs..I was in my early 20's when this album came out..Perry's vocals on this are fantastic and Dave Navaro's solo reminds me of something JIMI HENDRIX would play..Peace...
Hey, u guys are awesome like listening to good music with cool people! I bet u might like the band ‘ Television’ especially the song Marquee Moon. It is art punk from early 70s New York, lots of fluid guitars and a great rhythm section
As others have stated in the comments, Jane's Addiction importance and influence can't be overstated. This album was groundbreaking in so many different ways. The vocals, melodies, and wicked guitar and bass tracks in this song were truly special. Even 35 years later, this album still stands as a crowning achievement in rock, and became a true harbinger of things to come in the 90s. Growing up in the LA in the 90s underground scene, we were so spoiled by Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt, just to name a few. What a great time to grow up.
This band, and Porno For Pyros, (which the singer and drummer from Jane's Addiction were members) are some of the best from this era. They may not get the same mentions as bands like Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam, but had entire albums with great songwriting.
FINALLY The Godfather’s of Alternative Rock now We’re getting some where with these Reactions. React to the Song “Stop” that song is a call to arms and the take over of the 90’s Rock Music from the 80’s Hair Bands.
YES!!!! I knew Lex would love Jane's once she heard some of their bangers! Now you need to listen to Ocean Size! Steve Perkins is very underrated as a bad ass drummer! He's in my top 5 with Bonham, Peart and Ward.
LEX, You got it right girl. I love when people listen and really really try and hear they're music for the first time but you are in for a really great journey of love and fireworks if you keep listening to JANES ADDICTION. They changed my life. And any real fan of Jane's feels the same way. I beg you to try them on for size. MOUNTAIN SONG IS just one of soooooo many of they're best. My favorite is 3 days. You turn the lights low a s lay down and listen to that song 2 to 3 times n a row. I honestly believe it might be your new Favorite song. They are different. There's no one in the world like them. From the Bass, Dave Navarros lead guitar,Steve Perkins drums and of course the absolutely unique voice of Perry Farrell. Listen 2 Nothing Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual... I can tell you will be enchanted....
More Janes Addiction please, you should check out a live version of Jane Says. There are a few both accoustic and one with Flea from ROCP playing Bass.
This woman is an absolute complete utter trip… the places she visits in her head.. it’s like an open slue from the music to her creative mind.. she needs to learn how to harness that and put it back into the world.. there’s an intuitive artist lurking in there.
They were just a great, totally original rock band with really talented, but more importantly, ultra-creative musicians. Still love this band. Btw, the way Lex’s mind works is God’s own private mystery.
Nice observation Alex! This stuff is blowing up yer mind ay? They were a sudden wind in rock music,-this album especially/ The creativity and social commentary were cutting at the time.
I don't how to express just how radical this band was in 1988. Nothing's Shocking could easily be considered the birth of the 90's.
The first Grunge album right here. This thing sold in massive numbers in Seattle when it dropped.

Hey, u guys are awesome like listening to good music with cool people! I bet u might like the band ‘ Television’ especially the song Marquee Moon. It is art punk from early 70s New York, lots of fluid guitars and a great rhythm section
Almost like a combination of Smashing pumpkins and chili Peppers.
Don't forget Porno For Pyros, Perry Farrell's band after Jane's Addiction - also damn good.
"Pets" would be a good starter.
This was the alternative before the chili Peppers.
This band, and Porno For Pyros, (which the singer and drummer from Jane's Addiction were members) are some of the best from this era. They may not get the same mentions as bands like Alice in Chains or Pearl Jam, but had entire albums with great songwriting.
Lex definitely gets this. This brings me back to freshman year in high school.
Lex If you really wanna clean your boat may I suggest Janes Addiction "Ocean Size"
FINALLY The Godfather’s of Alternative Rock now We’re getting some where with these Reactions. React to the Song “Stop” that song is a call to arms and the take over of the 90’s Rock Music from the 80’s Hair Bands.
cleaning my boat 😂🤣😂 you two are the best!
Fuck yeah, please do more Jane's Addiction :) One of my fave bands from the 90's
YES!!!! I knew Lex would love Jane's once she heard some of their bangers! Now you need to listen to Ocean Size! Steve Perkins is very underrated as a bad ass drummer! He's in my top 5 with Bonham, Peart and Ward.
Good to see you leveling up, they're a stellar band.
Lex has the most wonderful metaphors!
She's a musical savant!
Your body and your spirit can not resist that tribal guitar riff. Just go for it man
LEX, You got it right girl.
Lex got her head bobbing, teeth gritting, hands chopping, mouth grimacing. She GETS this song!
More Janes Addiction please, you should check out a live version of Jane Says. There are a few both accoustic and one with Flea from ROCP playing Bass.
Lex's super random analogies never cease to make me laugh my ass off.
This album blew me away when I first heard it
"I feel like I'm cleaning my boat!"
Priceless.
I see it as a song about expressing yourself. Cashing in. Not holding it back. Being true to yourself.
I think this is my favourite JA song. Like Lex said at the start, it's nasty. Love it.
And thank u, love u guys
Jane says Lex has many boats to clean lol
Nice observation Alex! This stuff is blowing up yer mind ay? They were a sudden wind in rock music,-this album especially/ The creativity and social commentary were cutting at the time.
Jane's addiction, Faith no More, Primus and Danzig were my big 4
I dig the Jane's vibe going on here 🤘🏼. The original video of this is great. 3 days is an excellent song. TY for your reaction
