  • We ride the 2021 Aprilia RSV4 and RSV4 Factory! Aprilia's legendary V4 powered superbike returns for 2021 with several upgrades that hope to keep the RSV4 at the sharp end of the superbike class. What's new? Quite a bit.
This year, Aprilia engineers set to work on the stellar V4 engine to meet and exceed Euro 5 emissions standards. To achieve those goals, a new crank is employed that accommodates a longer 53.32mm stroke and bumps the displacement up to 1,099cc. Claimed figures are just as impressive as before, with a reported 217 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 92 ft-lbs of torque at 10,500 rpm. All those ponies get up and go on demand because the crank is also 1.32 pounds lighter, allowing the refreshed engine to spin up with more urgency than before.
For the first time since its inception, the RSV4 has undergone a major visual overhaul, which is inspired by the recently released RS 660. The new bodywork integrates the aerodynamic features in a much more thoughtful way, while also providing 11% less wind resistance for the rider, along with 7% more positive air pressure in the airbox.
Typing direct into the updated looks are the ergonomics, which offer a narrower feel than previous generations. The fuel tank is noticeably slimmer and the seat is lowered to 33.3 inches. In addition, the new knurled footpegs are lower, which now only provide more grip, but additional ground clearance.
There are plenty of other improvements to the 2021 Aprilia RSV4 platform, such as updated geometry with a shorter wheelbase and a new underslung swingarm that is 30% stiffer near the axle. But, owners of previous RSV4's will note that the handling of the 2021 RSV4 and RSV4 Factory is a little livelier these days.
Senior Editor Nic de Sena dusted off his leathers and headed off to the iconic Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California to test the revised 2021 Aprilia RSV4 and RSV4 Factory. Check it out!

Out of all of the reviews I’ve watched for this bike, yours is the best! You actually did your research before doing your review and it shows! I can’t wait to pick mine up this Friday!

Well, I brought the RSV4 Factory home yesterday and took it for a ride. So I woke up early this morning and went for another ride. I’m showing 502 miles on the clock and this is one amazing bike! I own the 2016 1299 Panigale S, 2014 ZX-10R (track bike), 2014 RC8R, 2014 1290 Super Duke R, and 2020 1290 Super Duke R. The Aprilia It is by far the best bike out of the bunch. It just does everything that you want it to do. I didn’t think there was a bike that was more stable than my RC8R…. until I rode my RSV4. I’m going to thoroughly enjoy riding many miles on this machine!

@@elvulch Already working on getting those break-in miles done, I see! And that's quite the stable you have for reference.
      Stay safe out there!

    Always enjoy your reviews Nic,
This will probably be my next bike 👍 a couple of previous reviews said just go for the standard bike, rides just as good, what’s your take on this?
Is it worth springing the extra cash for the Factory one 🤷🏻‍♂️??

      Hey Poucher Col,
I appreciate the kind words and definitely let us know how you like it if and when you grab your new bike.
I'm of two minds when talking about the RSV4 and RSV4 Factory, and I think it requires a little more context. Looking at things objectively, the riding experience between the two machines is fairly relative. I'd say that the Öhlins suspension edges out the Sachs kit in terms of ride quality and refined feel, but not by much. The lighter forged wheels on the Factory will flatter a bike's handling a little more than slightly heavier cast wheels.
The RSV4 represents great value, especially when considering that it shares all of the engine, chassis, ergonomics, aesthetic and electronic updates. What I think will separate the two buyers more than anything is finances and application. The finance part is easy: Do you want to spend the extra $6000 or not? The application requires a little more thought. Trackday focused riders, club racers, and the like will probably gravitate towards the standard model. That type of rider knows what they're doing with suspension and already has plans to tune it, upgrade it, or replace it to suit them. And remember, that $6000 savings can cover many trackdays, riding schools, suspension components, tires, fuel, etc. If you aren't that hardcore rider, then you'll still be saving money and just need to write down your suspension settings as you go from the track to the street.
The Factory is the no-holds-barred RSV4 experience with every bell and whistle available. How does it benefit you? Well, exploring settings and finding a setup that you enjoy is done quickly and without turning wrenches (except preload; that's still done manually). The suspension feel is excellent, and on the street, the semi-adaptive damping will help keep you much more comfortable on inconsistent road surfaces. Once you take it to the track, all you have to do is pop the Factory into your track settings, and you're off to the races. Easy peasy.
      Hope this helps!

@@ultimatemotorcycling Thanks so much for your detailed reply Nic, 👍
I think I’m gravitating more towards the factory model, I ride mostly road in the UK and our roads are in quite a bad state in places.
I almost bought a 2019 electronic suspension model Tuono, but changed my mind when I discovered that you couldn’t change the suspension settings on the fly ??
I believe the better electronics on this new version allows you to attach different suspension settings to the individual engine modes, that’s what I really want.
I’m currently running 3 bikes, an old R1100 BMW roadster, a 2020 Ninja 1000SX for touring duties ( great easy to live with bike) and my pride and joy 899 Panigale with K-tech DDS pro suspension and BST carbon wheels, just love this bike so the RSV4 will have to be really special for me to abandon the 899 🤔?
Once again, thanks for your feedback experience and keep the great reviews coming 👏👏👏

@@1956colinb No worries, that's what I'm here for! And that's quite the stable you have going on.
I'll have to double-check my notes on the previous Tuono, but you are correct about the RSV4. You can select three different throttle maps and customize suspension settings as you please. Also, the 2021 Tuono should have all the same features since it shares the same ARPC package with the RSV4. I'm fairly comfortable saying that the bikes at the top of this class feel special, but definitely get out to the dealer and try to spend some time with them.
Let us know what you end up with!
      Take care!
