Hi David, when removing the strips, if you place the tip of your forceps next to the pin to hold the paper down, you can prevent the strip from moving, and reduce the risk of damage. Another great video by the way.
One tip, the location/date label should be the first under the specimen because it is permanent and collection data does not change. The determination label should be the last because it is likely to change and be removed/replaced at some point: possible change in taxonomy, misidentification, new taxon etc.
Thank you so much for the comment. Don’t give up! If you have any questions, please let me know. We have several other videos on how to do this on my channel.
@@keysmoths5336 it’s funny you ask that it’s one I’ve been in search of, that and juniper hairstreak. Next season I plan on scouting out some spots that fit the criteria for them
@@GoodlukHelCigar that’s cool!!!! Lmk if you find them. I want to rear them so bad!! I’ve only ever seen one in my life. All the way in the panhandle of florida
I tried a while ago pinning a moth I found (Lascampa trifolii) it died just this afternoon anyways and I accidentally broke its antenna 😭 and injured a liiiiil bit of its lower wing… anyways it’s my first time pinning an insect..SO I WANNA ASK how am I supposed to store it (I got no equipment 🥲)
Hi there. If they are dry and they are not in the shape that you want them to be or position that they want them to be in, then you do have to rehydrate them with either humidity and or injection with hot water. Let me know if you need any further information
Where do you get your unmounted specimens from? I got send one from someplace I brought online and it said unmounted but when I opened it the specimen butterfly is mounted to a plastic container using liquid silicon and it’s whole abdomen is inside the liquid silicon. Would this specimen be a right off?
Hi there. I’m sorry to hear of your experience. It sounds as though the specimen you received will remain like that forever if it has silicone in it. There are various sellers that I’ve bought from on eBay. What species are you looking for?

yes yes - great point!
Thank you so much for sharing! I want to start collecting and mounting specimens next year!
It’s a great hobby. Please let me know if you ever have any questions
I envy you. So many beautitul butterflies in other countries.
I understand. I feel the same way about people who live in the tropics
They are beautiful! Thank you! I am just trying to pin folded butterflies these days and haven't mastered it yet. I'm not going to give it up.

Just what I needed to see. Thank you.
fantastic!!!!
Brilliant video David!
Thanks uncle Bob!
There’s a world where butterfly and moth wings are money
I’m sure there is!!!
Never knew this was so involved. Nice to know makes me want to start collecting, but I grow a lot of plants. I'm 40 years old, am I too old for this?
Not too old at all!! You’re in your prime!!
Шикарные артемисы🦋🦋🦋❤️👍
Personally I think any collection without data labels is just a waste of insect life. Its super important to label specimens.
Agreed
Can we see some of your displays? I have some great place in nj if you r ever curious to go looking in new Jersey
Cool. I was actually born in NJ! It’s been about 30 years since I’ve been there!! You know where to get Hessels Hairstreak?

I'm from NJ and I'd love to know your NJ location. I'm just starting to collect. 😊

Oh wow! Did you already mount it?
Hi
My butterflies came open and flat between two pieces of foam. Do I still need to inject water into the thorax and put them in a humidity box?

@@keysmoths5336 Thank you. I think from now on I'll purchase closed specimens. Also, what glue would you recommend to glue them into a shadow box?
@@pbutterz it takes some getting used to for sure. I use hot glue gun for gluing specimens. But most of the time I’m using pins and not glue
