I know this is hella late but half life npcs use a sound system that tracks the volume of the sound, which makes the mouth move depending on the sound on its own.

The BMIT (Black Mesa Invisible Treadmill) Was an early product designed by Black Mesa from all the way back from when they sold prank supplies at mall shops.
The main use of the BMIT was that you place it anywhere in your house, and a housemate would walk on it and fall unexpectedly.
Results were rather tragic.

If you think about it Half-Life is a story where basically everything seems to be predetermined. It seems unlikely Gordon would be able to avert the cascade by just pulling the crystal out when he has no agency of his own in the first game.
