Half way through PGY-1 and this video made me feel a few things:
    - the joy and pride of hearing a colleague provide a refreshing perspective and appreciating the vast learning opportunities of medicine
    - a deep concern for my residency class (and other trainees) in regards to burn out, seeing residency as another hoop to jump through before becoming an attending, making money, having a nicer lifestyle etc.
    - eagerness to continually shift my mindset from "this is JUST another rotation before I can do something I'm interested in" towards "How can what I am learning now be applied to *insert interested subspecialty here*?"
    - excitement to take advantage of all that is yet to come, especially relating to how can I do my part to improve the system, become more efficient and help others do the same, too
This came at a timely moment for me so thank you for your insight!

Thank you for your awesome comment and I agree with all of your sentiments! Yeah, the burnout in residency seems pretty pervasive and it does seem like a lot of people want to just coast by. I'm not going to lie - at times you will feel that burnout yourself and want to just coast through certain rotations - but I think seeing what you wrote about continually shifting your mindset is going to really help you succeed and get out of those ruts quickly. Residency definitely has its ups and downs but I think by having the right mindset we can definitely make the most out of it :)

Hi Conan! I recently spent a week at UCD for an infection and a lumbar puncture to test for meningitis. I met with multiple docs, but didnt get a chance to see you. Its probably for the best anyways, I was in majjjor pain. Glad to see you are still posting on YT

So sorry that you had to spend so much time in the hospital but I'm glad it sounds like you are doing better! Lumbar punctures are definitely not the most pleasant procedure, especially for the patients. Maybe next time I will run into you somewhere (but hopefully not in the hospital!) and thanks for your comment :)

I'd say there is value in working in different parts of the hospital. The system that we have now is old in the way that people are there for the rest of their lives. The lack of spice makes the more senior doctors seem a bit bored with their specialty.
Personally, I would want a private clinic where all types of patients can be seen and then hire a select team of different specialties to get differing viewpoints. Working in the hospital on just one specialty seems to me a sad future. Medicine is much more than one organ system!
    Godspeed brother!

Agreed and thank you for your comment! It does seem like medicine is getting more and more hyperspecialized. Part of it is probably due to necessity but unfortunately I definitely do feel like it makes us less rounded as before

what i told all my juniors was something an old attending told me that i completely blew off at the time: "the hours are long but the years are short." i only started to appreciate my residency training status as a pgy-4 (last year for neuro) and it was a good call to sink more time into training than was "required"

You're gonna be great- I've heard rave reviews from your future colleagues! It's nice as an attending to finally have the value of your time respected.

Haha thanks! I’m rotating on the hospitalist elective right now and your name seems to come up pretty frequently over here, they want you to come back haha

Hahah that part about med school! I like this outlook a lot though! Trying to make the most of med school rotations (even though it’s hard) because I’ll only get to do some of these things once!
