I played this song with my high school jazz band back in the 70's. Similar or same arrangement, but we played at a slower, and IMO, more soulful, tempo. Basie band is totally amazing, obv. Thanks for this.
Thanks, baby. I just got done listening to the Kay Starr And Count Basie version. I wish the Count had put her vocals over the top of this version instead, because this is even better in my opinion. Not that the slower version is bad mind you, because I just posted it in my G+ Community; "CHANTERS USA".
Does anyone know the effect the trombone soloist uses at around 1:50? It sounds like a shake but in lower register, which I didn't know was possible. I always hear trumpets and trombones from this era playing with that sound but have no clue as to what it is or how to learn it.
Classy jazz band full of swing. Exceptional talent with high octane brass musicians
Basie was one of a kind. Love this!
Love this rendition because it is so jivey to dance to. 🎶
What can one say, except that the Basie band, in live jazz, had an exeptional superior quality of gorgeous performance above all others...

One of my old time faves ! You rock the spot Basie !
The double bass rocks the whole tune , brilliant
Goes well with coffee. Saw Basie in 1979 in Montreux Switzerland with Ella. Unbelievable concert. No band could swing like Basie.
That’s marvelous! There are UA-cam clips from that event. Tisket a Tasket breathtaking.
So good it brings tears to my eyes...
Hot damn that swings!
Yeah!
This is the best recording of this playing this
Basie is the man
Basie's the best!
black and white is the best! it just remonds me what the real jazz is!
Sublime
Count basie is just in a different league to everyone else, the man like miles davis was way ahead of his time..
If this doesn't get your foot tapping, nothing will.
From the CD "Before Frank", a collection of Basie instrumentals recorded during the making of "Sinatra at the Sands".
Thanks, baby!! I was unaware of that.

+Ian Lazan It's just tight plunger
Ian Lazan lip trills
it’s a shake. shakes are possible in any register, but it can be more difficult because the partials are farther apart in the lower register.
That's a plunger mute, Ian. Literally a toilet plunger (hopefully never used) held over the bell of the instrument.
+Thomas Lee I mean the effect that sounds like a shake but should be impossible in that register. But thanks for replying
+Ian Lazan It's either a tongue shake or a lip slur
Yep. That's a bone with a mute.
