The licensing reason, alongside with MTX (lootbox in particular) is why car games and rhythm games are hardest hitter with licensing issues in Roblox.
Robeats have been objected by music artist, one of them is Ebimayo, as the result the song got removed. However.... osu! which is similar because no license aspect, are ignored, because their chart is not paywalled.
Driving Empire got objected by car makers, because of gambling aspect (even with rename).
Well roblox games are able to buy car licenses like a roblox game called driving empire they have bought a Koenigsegg license

The only issue with this video is with this logic No Hesi is also breaking copyright laws because I dont think they go to the manufacturers to get rights to use the cars that they put in the game that isn't originally there. Same with the Car Dealership tycoon/simulator game, that uses stolen assets and just rename the car and brands slightly, is that okay? If Roblox is getting this scrutinising then every other car game and mods need to aswell 🤷

My personal opinion on copyright and all that is "If you aren't profiting from it, damaging the reputation or using it distastefully" why the hell should modding a car into a game be bad, yes internet lawyers will go "B-b-b-but..." but at the end of the day, morally there is nothing wrong with modding a car into a game, as long as you haven't ripped the model from another game.
I'm hoping the modder doesn't get in hot water because if the attention this video may bring.

@@domas.sakala it's not a grey area in my mind, if you are putting a mod behind a paywall, whether that be ingame or to actually install it (like when bethesda tried to support modding with their own version of the workshop, or a patreon) then in my eyes you are actively benefitting from it, in games like GMOD it absolutely grinds my gears when i see "you need to be a vip for this car" knowing damn well the owners arent giving the modder any of that cash.
Way i see it is morally (laws aside) for a mod to be free of any issues, if it contains copyrighted material it must be available to all, not locked behind any walls and must not be damaging the brand or giving out stupid messages (don't have a copyrighted car that's been reskinned with political statements)
Pisses me off greatly when people in roleplaying games, sell custom jobs and for these jobs they use character models ripped from another game, such as starkiller from star wars or power rangers as glorified gangsters aha!

Coincidence? I just started playing Roblox a few days ago 😭. I think im getting a keyboard and mouse because some games the vehicles are impossible to start or function without letter keybinds. I heard about Roblox but never seen any gameplay. I figured it was like Minecraft and everything was static. I watched another UA-camr play and was amazed. I wish all servers had a universal UI because some servers have the perfect UI and controls while others can be a bit troublesome with turning on a turn signal while driving with a controller.

Actually stolen contents are the smaller problem with roblox. There is a series of video about it made by People Make Games that did some research about it.
Little spoiler: If you make a game and sell it on roblox you get 80% of the money and give to roblox's devs. (that's basically slavery and that's just the start.)
I mean u kinda have a variety of other racing games w/ the NFS MW BMW M3 GTR in every1 of them just as a mod. Sum of which includes a unique engine sound for the car itself & not sum generic engine sound from other vehicles. So nothing new there. Just sayn. But yea like check out the mod for the same car in GTA 4 & 5 for example

If the models were created from scratch, it's not a stolen asset. However, it obviously still breaches copyright law. Now, I can't know if the cars were modelled from scratch(not a stolen asset) or ported from other games(stolen asset) but at the same time, why this should be a big deal? Isn't that something creators and players always wanted? More lenient copyright enforcement so that people create and play using their favourite franchises without legal repercussions? I only consider scummy when creators charge currency for it.
The problem is that you can buy currency on roblox wich makes it a problem even if it is community created and the community itself doesn't get a cut through real cash

A lot of racing games in Roblox are actually allowed to use the branded logos. Certain brands like Bugatti and Koneisegg have actually pushed to have their cars removed. They also don't usually list the vehicles under their IRL names but with something off-brand. (At least the popular ones don't). But they do create their own models, as in games such as "Driving Empire" have original designed cars, referencing Lamborghini.
Yet in absolute driving (when i first played the game), I can see 3 branded koenigsegg cars, casual roblox as always

Just depends if Roblox themselves pay for the licenses or not for badges and name. No car company would allow games to be made and put out for free using their car name and badge, can use the model but everything else would require a lease, contract etc from the car companies otherwise that is stealing intellectual property.

Considering there are games on the steam store that literally steal models and use in their games, I think Roblox designers/players building these models themselves on Roblox should be fine, at least until those bootleg steam games get removed.

Fun fact about the engine is that if you are making a car game. You would require to create a custom physics script bc the ones that are used by default are outdated and cause your car to jump or even sometimes send you to space if you hit the wall too fast.

The reality is that most roblox car games get away with badging is because some of them are not advertised that much and people dont tell on them because that will get the attention of car companies and sue the game or even roblox. That happened with Driving Empire alot. It got like 15 brands removed from reporting the car companies.
ArtBlox recreated the car asset himself in a tech demo to showcase his skills on the platform. You definitely can argue they shouldn’t be using it in advertising, but you’re gonna do a lot of damage to his career as a developer with this video.

there are certain big driving games that are facing DMCA / Cease & Desist from automakers mainly too a game called Driving Empire whos started to recently to make fictional cars.
But that all really started from DE adding a terrible gambling update and a good chunk of the community sending emails to automakers in hopes to get the game banned or the devs sued

a better way to phrase it is unlicensed assets, using designs or vehicles without proper licensing is what appears to be what you are upset about in the video.
you are right to an extent; but some games do go out of their way to create or commission their own models and strip their badging. games like southwest florida or midnight racing tokyo do this and i find that okay.
while you can question the legality of all of this, using similar looking cars without or with badging, i would like to point your attention to car x drift online which does exactly the same thing.
yes, there are stolen assets dont get me wrong but its definitely not your highlight of your video. surprisingly enough stolen assets usually come from stealing other peoples assets who made them on roblox or stealing from more accessible sources like assetto corsa mods.
i think the main issue you have is the lack of debadging, which is an issue that really goes rampant in lower quality roblox games. due to the fact anyone can make a game, people who arent planning to make a game mainstream like THE CANON GAME being a showcase rather than a game made for profit, tend to keep the badges on. take that as you will but for the most part besides the poor phrasing i would agree with you
Yep, I think he's wrong with this one. If modeling a car from the ground up is stealing, it can be applied to Assetto Corsa, BeamNG, CarX, and other games with unlicensed car replicas. Only difference is that the Roblox one does not removed the badging/logo

2. Indie games rarely ever have badges on the cars and will more than likely have a fake name as well.
Lest we forget, majority of modded content are stolen assets or assets from different games. Whether for Assetto, CarX, FiveM, Roblox, and even NFS, maps and cars (including cosmetic tuning) are almost derived from an existing model out there. It's near impossible to laser scan a model for a free or paid mod. Photoscans and scratch modeling is possible, but it isn't worth it since there are rips out there.
You can go on about the ethics of whether it's right or wrong to rip models from games and convert it to a different game. But I think the reason people do this-or patronise this-is because there's a gap in the racing game genre. For example, why pay 60$ for NFS Unbound, with incomplete access to cars and tuning, when you can play on a FiveM / Roblox / BeamNG / older NFS title with the same cars and better handling? Modding provides the perfect alternative to the different gaps in the genre. Although, word of advice, the modding scene can be scummy. Lots of leaked models, scammers, overpriced services out there.

Hey Theo, I make content on a Roblox game called Driving Empire. It used to make and add models of real cars (rebadged). This does breach copyright law, and a lot of car companies have sent a cease and desist to the game from an earlier controversy this year. Though, late last year a corporate company took over the game, called voldex. Though not popular with the players, they have chosen to use adapted versions of cars, without breaching copyright law. Cars breaching this have been left in, but they have completely abandoned ADDING any real cars.
I just wanted to highlight this, because:
1. DE is a Decent game that I think you should check out
2. I want to explain that not all games break this law.
I'd recommend you take a look at Driving Empire, since they are one of the first Roblox games to change their ways.
Glad that Theo checked out Midnight Racing: Tokyo, it's one of the only good games on the platform.

Honestly I see no reason for a car to get copyrighted in game. Brands and names, sure, but bodies? Are car brands making car games too? Otherwise I literally see no copyright material in these games. Not that I know what people decided the law will be.

Sonic Speed Simulator is a game created by a game creator going by 'GameFam'. It is an official collaboration with SEGA themselves.

roblox as always ngl. Casually breaking copyright laws, like this isn't the first time they did this: if I can recall: there was some drama between 2 roblox games over assets from the original game, of course the game that stole the assets was being a crybaby and calling out said creator of original game "a thief" since both game's assets were INSPIRED by peppa pig, however the original game creator put a spin on his characters, so he can rights resereved his own characters, which he did. Another drama I can recall is using BADGED cars into lootboxes, so if you want the car: then you'd want to cough up your own money.
As a roblox player who plays roblox driving games, its common to see people take cars and import them into roblox, the only game that I can recall that is sorta good (and cancelled) that has original (probably inspired) cars is rev//. On a unrelated note: has anyone noticed the gauge is like similar to forza horion 3?
People saying that it was done by scratch still don't know that it can still breach copyright, even if it was ported.
One of the more recent happenings of something being taken down was TF2S2. Valve took the project down much to the distain of many people. There had been videos talking about it, it was done around the same time Valve asked the creator of the demake Portal64 to take the project down, they all kept saying Valve took these projects down and are slowly turning into Nintendo, and some theorized that they were going to make a Source 2 versuon of the game in house, when in reality the reason why TF2S2 was taken was because it was also using stolen assets, much like The Canyon in Roblox. And this wasn't a standalone project you can get, this was published onto S&box, a game being developed by Facepunch, which ran under Source 2. S&box was more or less like Roblox or Dreams where there isn't any known gamemodes but rather different experiences you go into and muck around in. S&box isn't out to the general public but is out for people who have special invite keys. TF2S2 being in S&box is against Valve's intented purpose of giving Facepunch the permission to make the game with Source 2, since it's ONLY Source 2 and not the assets. This isn't the first time they took aftion, they did the same thing with a similar S&box project, this time for Counter Strike: Global Offensive, as it was taken down months before announcing Counter Strike 2, which ran on Source 2.

Play Rockstar is seeking down Grand Theft Auto V M servers for having real cars in it then Garry's mod and others should be taken down as well
for Midnight Racing: Tokyo (known in short as MRT), people ACTUALLY model cars, bodykits, wheels, do program them, but also see what's happening around ROBLOX situation, including car stuff (Lamborghini stuff did lead to remove the cars that resemble Lamborghini cars too much (even by name) from a lot of games, excluding MRT due to finding a proper balance, i guess)

MRT still has Lamborghini models (Miura, Countach, Gallardo) and IIRC the Diablo and Murcielago are both planned.

This is honestly one of the few rare times I respectfully disagree with Theo.
MR:T in particular has a whole team of developers working specifically on things such as tuning, physics and models for the cars.
Every model and bodykit for them has been hand made by the game's model team, thus the assets technically aren't "stolen" but rather using the likeness of the real vehicles.
It's honestly no different to people modding real cars into GTAV via things like FiveM or modding forums, if these Robox games are using "stolen assets" in the sense the vehicles are "stolen" then I think it's only fair to say GTAV modders are doing the same thing.
The names are all different as a way of avoiding copyright and this change was made very early in development, not long after the game started gaining traction and well before the 2nd map (Otsuki) was released.
Overall it's a surprising good game given Roblox and it's limitations, the models look good, maps are fun to drive on, physics are nice and the devs have slowly been rolling out more customizable tuning and highly detailed interiors for certain cars as of the most recent update.
In the end I find it unfair to say games like MR:T are using stolen assets, some racing games on Roblox may be, don't get me wong, but I don't see how people making custom 3D models of these cars for a Roblox game would be "stolen assets" when people technically do the exact same for games like GTAV, Assetto Corsa, CarX and even NFS.
