I just got home from a little independent bookshop . I bought:
1. Demon Copperhead
2. James by Everett
3. Grief is for People by Crosley
4. Amor Towles short stories
5. Lapvona - Moshfegh
6. Jane Hirshfield poetry
And a little book about 🌲 🌳 trees . And I almost forgot - a fresh copy of the Graveyard Book by Gaiman
That is quite a haul! I have noticed that May is often a big month for new books. It must be the run-up to summer reading! I’ve heard amazing things about The Ministry of Time and am eager to read it. And Evenings and Weekends sounds great too. Excited for the June book club read!
I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of good books that are coming out this spring/summer! I got a copy of Morgan Talty's Fire Exit that I can't wait to get to. I'm also impatiently waiting for Julia Armfield's new novel Private Rites to arrive from the UK (it is a CRIME that it isn't coming out in the US until December!!) And thank you for putting Drag: A Complete History on my radar; I love reading about drag (especially if it's got lots of pictures of course).
Long Island by Colm Toibin. He’s one of my favorite writers.
Hi Karl. You must read “Enlightenment “ by Sarah Perry. It totally wonderful and has become of my top reads of 2024 so far.
What an incredible book haul!
I’ve just started The Ministry of Time, and I really, really wanted to like it but I’m finding it very clunky both in style and plot sense. Maybe because of the hype I was expecting something like Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, engaging but well-crafted, and I’m confused about what people love so much about it. Hope to hear your thoughts soon, as Anna liked it so much too!
Hmm, Burgess's A Dead Man in Deptford wonderfully (and brutally) captured the Kit Marlowe story. Interesting to see it revisited, but a hard book to follow!
Oh dear, I’ll never find time to read all of them!
Butcher is terrific.
Drag and England Is Mine both sound excellent! Thanks for giving me some great new books to add to my wishlist. 🙂
Good to hear! Hope you enjoy them. 📚
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Cinema love. I adored it
Collected Works was one of my favourite books of last year. Don't let the size put you off, it is immersive and reads quite quickly.
Thanks for the encouragement, Janet!
Hi Eric. Are you familiar with Canadian author Michael Crummey? I'm currently reading his latest novel that came out last year. Its called "The Adversary" and it is amazing. Judging by some of the books you enjoy on this channel, I thought you might like it. Thanks so much for another round of great recommendations.
I'm writing "Glasgow Boys", "Space Oddities" and "The Diaries of Mr Lucas" on my list.
Weird, the Emiko Jean book here in the States is entitled THE RETURN OF ELLIE BLACK. Just finished reading it like a half hour ago.
I've ordered a copy of Butcher from Blackwells but it doesn't release until 23 May. I hope it arrives in time for 1 June as I've not read Joyce Carol Oates before.
Three to recommend
Leeward by Katie Daysh
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley
A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock ( a retelling of Frankenstein)
Hi Eric I have never read Joyce Carol Oates, where would you suggest I begin?
Unsurprisingly, I've made a whole video about this: ua-cam.com/video/ullbHQheCmc/v-deo.html 😄but I think "The Gravedigger's Daughter" or "We Were the Mulvaneys" are good places to start.
I'm torn between the butcher and how to leave the house.
What do you think about Solstice by JCO
I read it awhile back and plan to read it again … maybe in autumn. Intense.
