  • With the exception of building soil and getting beds ready for winter, here are the 5 key tasks I'm doing this winter to make sure I am all set for the next growing season in the vegetable garden. Winter is also an important time to rest, so make sure you give yourself a well-deserved break sometime over the next couple of months before returning back to the vegetable garden.

End of December--early January: 5 winter tasks for your garden for summer abundance
1.) Pick 3 new things to grow: Push outside your comfort zone. Look for something new/unusual to grow New Zealand yam.
2.) Get seed order in by early January. Make a note of all the crops you want to grow next year. Cross reference that with your seed storage to make sure that you have it. Put a little red dot next to the seeds you need to order. Try a new variety with a few different crops. Who knows, it may outperform your tried and true.
    3.) Make a month-by-month planting plan:
4.) Garden checkup: Focus on how the garden works as a whole rather than whether the plants are growing. Start with the boundaries and work inwards. Check fence post for rot with a little wiggle, hoses for leaks, raised beds for deterioration, compost bins, water infrastructure, tears or rips in fabrics.
    5.) Read more about gardening.

One thing that has impacted my plan for next year is to take a good look at what the family wasn’t very interested in eating... or what they wouldn’t miss if I didn’t grow it. Swiss chard and celery seemed to be the least interesting. Frees up some real estate for next season. I totally agree with spending the down time learning, consuming content.

Made my first raised bed this past season (june-bearing strawberries). I figured the side boards would eventually rot. So, we took down an old out-building on the property that had cinder blocks for the base that we will use for larger beds next season. Our soil is mostly clay. Raised beds is the way to go.

They're a much better flavour, and more peppery, than the shop bought version. It's hard to go backwards when you've tried that. Good luck trying new veg.

Greetings from Down Under Huw! I like your ideas in this video and the Monthly Plan is one that I have adopted earlier this year. I have been maintaining a Garden Diary and a Lessons Learned both of which I intend to review when completing my Monthly Plan for next year. I never really had any documentation to fall back on before when it came to gardening and it is very helpful and satisfying to go back and see exactly how much I have achieved in the garden over the year. Yesterday, we had some Wales-like weather when we received 32.4mm of rain in one day. I so enjoy this change in the weather at this time of the year as it generally lowers the temperature a little and gives us some respite from the heat. The idea of challenging myself in the garden is also something I have adopted more frequently than yearly. It seems to coincide with weekly trips to my garden center and I see something that I have never grown or eaten before. Thanks for the time you put into your videos as I always seem to learn something despite us being on opposing sides of the equator. Cheers!

Over winter is the perfect time to revitalise poor tired soil, here in Australia the summer sun really takes its toll on the soil quality along with growing so winter is the best time to give the garden a break, add a truck load of manure, mulch well and let rest for a couple of months. The rain can then do the job of making sure those nutrients get in deep and it'll be ready for spring planting

Loved your video. I also enjoy doing most of those things during the winter in Maine which is very long and very cold. However I have never done a wellness check and I think that is a great idea but I’m not sure my husband who would have to fix all of those things will think that such a great idea. Reading and researching during the long winter is what helps me to survive until spring. Already have my seats ordered because I know with all the new gardeners now there will be a large shortage of seeds. Hope you have a wonderful holiday and happy winter.

I find all your posts so helpful. I've ordered my seeds already, this season I'm going to be on top of things. (I've said that every year though!) Your kale is amazing. My goal is to start seeds this season I've only done transplants from the nursery. And to plant my beds with the precision you have. This upcoming season our community garden have created a program to bring children into gardening and raising vegetables for several charities that prepare meals in the community. Your books and videos and suggested resources are a great help. Stay well.

I have just received your book and it’s really inspired me to sort of think outside the box in using things that may just get land filled that I hadn’t thought of. Hopefully I will get my key to the plot this week and start some actual work instead of. Watching other people do it.

Thanks for the video. It mostly reinforces what I have done. I already have ordered seeds and 90% of them have arrived. Among those seeds are a few new things to try. I have already started work on infrastructure, making 5 new tote beds, and I will be moving one large bed as soon as the lettuce in it is done. I already have a garden plan for spring. But the video makes a good suggestion to make others. Perhaps a summer and fall plan now when I have lots of time. Since most of my garden is only a season old there isnt much repair work, but I will look into it.

I was able to expand my growing area just a bit and have layered in the compost to be ready in spring. When the temps plumet, thats' when I research my new crops to try the next year..so I am a year ahead..doesn't always work but alot of times it does, failure 1 year can be success the following. One idea I plan to try out this year is a keyhole raised bed. I crunched some numbers on this. Two 4 x 8 beds, 1.5 feet apart, which are made into a keyhole raised bed increases the growing area by 9%, and the cost is about 12% less than for the two 4 x 8 beds. I was excited to find out this trivia, and look forward to seeing how such a bed works out where we live in Florida.

Thank you for the top tips :) it would be great so see how you replace the worn out beds. Whilst mine are new (built this autumn) but I know at some time in the future they will require replacing. I'm also working on connecting with others locally so we can seed & seedling swop in the spring. I have very limited propogation space, so I'm weighing up & researching, the pros & cons of a totally removable lid on a raised bed / a removable poly tunnel type structure / a zip up plastic greenhouse, as well as sourcing / saving / upcycling what could be used as cloches, seedling starters, and seed trays. I'm also working hard on making enough compost - sourcing topsoil & compost was an issue when I built my raised beds, I've also heard some has doubled in price this year alone. Learning about seed saving is also on my 'need to learn' list :) Looking forward to the next tips ......

I'm very very new to vegetable gardening. My long term plan is to move out into the countryside and farm for a living. 2 months ago I decided I'd take the first step, so I've been watching your videos and lots of other useful channels as well. What I love about most of the channels I watch is how honest and genuinely helpful you all are, and you share your mistakes as well, which is so so helpful and appreciated.
I've built 4 raised beds (around 8 sq metres in total, and will do a couple more) in my 60x40 foot garden, and filled them in, ready for my first plantings in spring!
I'm starting off slow, and if all goes well I'd love to move to a bigger plot and become self sustained. Just got to persuade wife and kids...
Thanks again Huw, wishing you all the very best.

I’d add rabbits to your garden. All that kale you were tossing could be green feed. Rabbits have a very low feed to meat ratio. Ducks would love up that kale too. Best eggs ever.

Greetings Huw, great idea doing a garden *check-up*. How about catching up with gardening friends as another point? Then we can compare notes and maybe do some seed or plant swaps as well. Maybe something that didn't work for them may work fabulously in your garden. Great video, really enjoyed this ☺

Planted about 6 different types of Oca which I bought Tom the real seed company...... (heartily recommend the Real Seed company and I particularly liked their Petrowski turnip and the Blue Bannabs squash is amazing.)...grew very well over the year in a raised bed and followed the instructions not to pick them early as they apparently double their weight in last month.... but despite various types of cooking I have to report them as being very pallid and nondescript when it came to eating..... I’m not surprised that history shows that our ancestors chose spuds over Oca.... interesting to note that Oca does not have mush in the way of calories unlike the spud.... however sure their is a market for fancy restaurants for this veg

I would love to see how you replace the boards on a raised bed that needs replacing. I've got a raised bed that all four sides/boards need replacing. How do you do that without all the soil falling out?

    • @Nitecrow314
      @Nitecrow314 3 роки тому +1

You can heap it over to the opposite side/end to replace 1 side & end at a time. If it has a bit of rooty structure to it you may not have to move very much. Or maybe heap it all up into the middle?

I overwinter my beds with mustard tatsoi. They make a thick ground cover you can eat as greens and you can turn them under a few months before planting the crops you really want to grow.
Edit: As long as you don't let them go to seed they won't come back.

Huw - yet another excellent video / and recommendation to give it a break for now. Meanwhile, question, please .... which month did you plant the OCA in your raised bed. I am mostly keen to learn 1. how late I can plant them? 2. Are they a perennial or can one save tubers or “seeds” from one season for the next?? Thanks I have seen loads of your tutorials and your Welsh accent is also a real bonus!!

Love your videos!! Here in Ontario my raised beds are already snow-covered but I'm keeping a couple things alive in the kitchen window like lettuce and lavender. One question I do have is where did you get your seed storage boxes!?!? I must get those! They look awesome!

I want to challenge you to try another vegetable - Jerusalem artichoke. Before the potatoes in Europe this vegetable was been use it very often. The interesting thing about it is that you can grow it from the peel.

    Hey Huw!
    Thanks for another nice video.
I wonder always: „He grows amazing amounts of vegetable! Is he and his family all eating this themselves??“
Of course, I think, you‘re going to preserve a lot of it for winter.
If so, it would be nice to see, how you do that.
My curious question: Do you also sell it to neighbours or so?
    Best regards from Bavaria!🤗

I like cabbage, collards and celery. But the family likes tomatoes, cucumbers and beets a lot more. So I'm growing less cabbages, more kale, tomatoes and cucumbers.
I can spend easily several hours in the garden. Family wonders what else I could possibly work on for so long. Boy were they surprised when I pulled out my To Do List.
