Cal kind of gives us a hint that something has happened that they family hasn’t dealt with or heeled from. Cal said, Y’all have backed me in a corner and that he’s an emotional person and that they wouldn’t let him be an emotional person. I’m really curious where this is going. I also think a lot of people misunderstood what Cal was saying. He wasn’t literally blaming his sons. When he said Nate was his biggest disappointment, he meant that he created. Cal’s seeing what years of lying and living a double life has done to him and his family.
I think it actually might be both. I think he resents everyone in his family in some way because in his mind, if it wasn't for them, he could have lived the life he wanted for himself.

I agree with you when you said Maddie was softer this season and Cassie was turning more mean, I think that’s because when you are in a toxic relationship you kind of adapt your partner’s toxic behavior just to match their behavior and to be heard. Like, you both get into this relationship dynamic where it gets normal to start arguing anywhere or to be incredibly mean and petty to each other because y’all want to see who can hurt each other more and to be heard. I definitely think Nate brings that out of both of them with all the lies the gaslighting, the manipulation and the “one day I love you, the next day I don’t even look at you”. Of course everyone has a mind of their own and can choose how to act but to me this is as simple as relationship dynamics, in real if you encounter a toxic person like Nate, you either value yourself and your time enough to not even get involved in that or you get involved in that and start acting crazy too.
Nate’s in love with the idea of Cassie, she’s the perfect woman in his eyes but honestly I think he’s in love with Jules when it boils down to his sexuality. Maddy would be considered his first love but that relationship is crumbling since Maddy is growing and is starting to see through his crap. This episode was so spicy!! Cal’s monologue was just the icing on the cake! 🔥❤️🤣

I don’t think he’s in love with Jules at all. I feel like he was exposed to his fathers sexual proclivities from a young age and has tried to live up to his fathers impossible standards and while he wants to be nothing like his father on one hand, he wants to be what Cal wants him to be. I think he is not in love with any of these women, he’s too damn confused to actually love any of them. Maddy looks hyper feminine, Cassie is hopelessly feminine and male dependent (which is what Nate craves) and Jules destroys his typical conventions of what a relationship should be. He actually seems to fesishize Jules more than care about her.

God the Rue scene was a masterpiece! Labrinth was amazing too. When it cut to her just hugging her dad and him not being there, I lost it. It felt all too real. Like last season with the fight between her and her mom when she came at her with glass. I’m impatiently waiting for next Sunday!

I don't think Maddy is toxic. Her relationship with Nate is and it still has a hold on her. They may be broken up but Maddy isn't emotionally untangled from Nate so him jumping in and saying that they're over is like a punch to the gut for her. Especially since he's there on her bday giving her jewelry and being what she perceives as sweet. We know that he's been hooking up with Cassie and wants the tape back but she's holding onto hope that he can change and they'll be happy together.

I mean at the point where they hooked up both have been drinking. Although Nate probably already had his intentions when he picked Cassie up. Still, Rue even said during her narration that Cassie was drunk but not that drunk. Being drunk is not an excuse to just let go and not care if you are decent you can still make right decisions. It is on both but in my opinion Cassie still f*ed up more because for Nate its known to behave like a douche and be selfish, however from your best friend you'd expect her to have your back and be decent especially when shes witnessed the stuff Nate did to Maddie. In this episode we clearly see how selfish Cass is and how she in her mind justifies what she does by telling herself she is doing it to protect Maddie.
I made the mistake of watching this epi when I was supposed to be getting ready for work. I literally shed a couple of tears over that scene, said nope and curled up in bed to process as I remembered dancing with my grandfather, standing on his shiny shoes… I eventually got up, kissed his urn and went to work to make him proud. That scene was something else.
I DK I’m actually starting to feel more sympathetic towards Nate I know I know but he was really traumatized from a very young age by those very aggressive sex secret tapes and obviously it has very confused about himself and his sexuality he inherited a lot of that toxicity from his father. And it’s crazy that Cal blames that on his family he’s such a coward. Also not here for the Whole Jewels n Elliot n Rue thing it honestly all hurt my feelings I can’t believe Jewels wldbe so sneaky towards her.

In the discussion after the episode, Sam Levinson talked about how the scenes at the end are a metaphysical visualization to how these characters feeling internally & their reality. With that, I don’t think it’s about Nate at all, but how she feels individually. Maybe a beauty with all this pain.
I just feel like everyone is actually forgetting that everything in Cal’s plot takes place pretty much right after Ashtray clobbered his head in, and he’s wildly drunk (and mostly definitely concussed). I’ve been less tactful when I’m sober, and this man was only spitting facts. He took responsibility (YES, he did), but he also held the mirror up to them while doing it. Nobody likes to feel blamed when the objectively obvious culprit is present, but it’s true, other people do contribute. Does it excuse? No, but it pushes the person into a corner, like Cal said. The man was as there for Nate as he possibly could be. Didn’t wreck him when Nate attacked him (because I know dads who would have destroyed their sons), tried to support Nate with the Maddy situation, gave Nate some pretty sound counsel about him not deserving his way out of the Maddy situation, but hoping it didn’t teach him the wrong lesson, being present at his games, being the first person Nate saw when he woke up. Like, the man did what he could. Did he do a perfect job? No. Do any of us? No. That’s the point. Of this entire show. All of these characters have their good qualities and their bad. The lines blur. We’re not meant to judge them, we’re meant to learn from them as they grow. Sam Levinson said that as we learn more and feel compassion for them, it should serve as an indictment against us for judging. Especially without even knowing the full context. Also, I feel like Cal blasting his family can be regarded as a mirror for society for judging Cal on his actions, but don’t forget about the other mess that people LIKE to look over to justify their prejudices, or avoid acknowledging their own mess. In other words, a POINTED “Before you point your fingers, make sure your own hands are clean.”, to the audience. Remember that Sam interwove a lot of his own experiences into this show, and so I’m sure he noticed a lot of judgment, and hypocrisy in that judgment as he sorted through his own issues. So, again, I definitely don’t feel this is an opportunity to judge - more so to learn. I need to know what happens next, though. I’m still sweating.

I don't think Maddy is toxic. Her relationship with Nate is and it still has a hold on her. They may be broken up but Maddy isn't emotionally untangled from Nate so him jumping in and saying that they're over is like a punch to the gut for her. Especially since he's there on her bday giving her jewelry and being what she perceives as sweet. We know that he's been hooking up with Cassie and wants the tape back but she's holding onto hope that he can change and they'll be happy together.

Still, Rue even said during her narration that Cassie was drunk but not that drunk. Being drunk is not an excuse to just let go and not care if you are decent you can still make right decisions. It is on both but in my opinion Cassie still f*ed up more because for Nate its known to behave like a douche and be selfish, however from your best friend you'd expect her to have your back and be decent especially when shes witnessed the stuff Nate did to Maddie. In this episode we clearly see how selfish Cass is and how she in her mind justifies what she does by telling herself she is doing it to protect Maddie.

I made the mistake of watching this epi when I was supposed to be getting ready for work. I literally shed a couple of tears over that scene, said nope and curled up in bed to process as I remembered dancing with my grandfather, standing on his shiny shoes… I eventually got up, kissed his urn and went to work to make him proud. That scene was something else.

In the discussion after the episode, Sam Levinson talked about how the scenes at the end are a metaphysical visualization to how these characters feeling internally & their reality. With that, I don’t think it’s about Nate at all, but how she feels individually. Maybe a beauty with all this pain.
I just feel like everyone is actually forgetting that everything in Cal’s plot takes place pretty much right after Ashtray clobbered his head in, and he’s wildly drunk (and mostly definitely concussed). I’ve been less tactful when I’m sober, and this man was only spitting facts. He took responsibility (YES, he did), but he also held the mirror up to them while doing it. Nobody likes to feel blamed when the objectively obvious culprit is present, but it’s true, other people do contribute. Does it excuse? No, but it pushes the person into a corner, like Cal said. The man was as there for Nate as he possibly could be. Didn’t wreck him when Nate attacked him (because I know dads who would have destroyed their sons), tried to support Nate with the Maddy situation, gave Nate some pretty sound counsel about him not deserving his way out of the Maddy situation, but hoping it didn’t teach him the wrong lesson, being present at his games, being the first person Nate saw when he woke up. Like, the man did what he could. Did he do a perfect job? No. Do any of us? No. That’s the point. Of this entire show. All of these characters have their good qualities and their bad. The lines blur. We’re not meant to judge them, we’re meant to learn from them as they grow. Sam Levinson said that as we learn more and feel compassion for them, it should serve as an indictment against us for judging. Especially without even knowing the full context.
Also, I feel like Cal blasting his family can be regarded as a mirror for society for judging Cal on his actions, but don’t forget about the other mess that people LIKE to look over to justify their prejudices, or avoid acknowledging their own mess. In other words, a POINTED “Before you point your fingers, make sure your own hands are clean.”, to the audience. Remember that Sam interwove a lot of his own experiences into this show, and so I’m sure he noticed a lot of judgment, and hypocrisy in that judgment as he sorted through his own issues. So, again, I definitely don’t feel this is an opportunity to judge - more so to learn.
I need to know what happens next, though. I’m still sweating.

I love the fact that you are the first UA-camr I’ve seen to actually see that Nate is the problem here. He’s the manipulator using both Maddie’s and Cassies’s issues against them. Nate took advantage of the fact that Cassie was in a terrible mental state
