I feel like the audience absolutely needed to see this side of Rue. It’s realistic behavior for an addict, to be destructive and destroy personal relationships. I feel like her story arc was getting a little too caught up in her relationship with Jules (and staying clean for only her, not her family or friends). And almost every other character in the story is having relationship issues, but Rue is the main character so her story arc has to be more in depth than the rest. So now that she’s back to drugs AND has Jules, shes got everything she wanted and her whole personality is becoming more fucked up. Like Ali said, drugs are like a degenerative disease.

For the Lexi segment I guess she is dissociating and imagining her life is a movie she is directing, as a way of dealing with her trauma. So the whole « This is life » part is the way she is actually imagining her real life is happening and then she decide to wrote a play about her life
Exactly. I also know what it’s like being the youngest child in a dysfunctional family that would fight a lot. You don’t really have much of a say being so little so you’d often just sit and listen or try to block it out.

cal loves marsha but not in the way he loved derek. he and derek experienced compulsive heterosexuality. he was crying when he and derek kissed because they’d loved each other for a long time and never said anything to each other. he broke down once he found out marsha was pregnant because he realized any chance he’d have to be with derek someday was gone and he’d be trapped in a loveless relationship for the rest of his life out of obligation to both marsha and his child.
Also for some reason I feel like her third look with the colorful bold eyeliner and pigtails really reminded me of Jules in season 1 which could be a small hint that she was trying different ‘personas’ and by Nate not looking but as rue says ‘ignoring’ could mean he’s also still aware of her existence but ignoring Jules, same as he did at the New Year’s Eve party in real life

Secondly he crossed a lot of boundaries, which would be fine if he was being genuine, but there was clearly a goal. He planted a LOT of seeds about Rue and her relationship with Jules under the guise of friendly (but intimate) conversation. It’s insidious and was perfectly written.
Nate has an unnamed eldest brother who hasnt appeared yet, only seen in family pictures, so the timeline of cals relationship with his wife probably works here presuming the brother is in his mid 20s at least

Apparently the actress who plays Kat, Barbie Ferreira, didn’t particularly like Sam Levinson‘s vision for her character and where she was going this season and they had an argument about it, which resulted in him cutting a bunch of her lines/scenes. So now I’m not surprised anymore that she wasn’t at the premiere. However, I feel like they’re pushing a lot of characters to the side and give them only very few scenes that don’t even add anything to their character or the progression of the plot. At this point Rue really is the main character and you can feel that. The focus is very much on her + Jules and Elliot.

Elliot was honest about his desire to get with both of them and in his observation that Rue isn’t sexually attracted to him and doesn’t seem to be in his eyes, a sexual person, something that Jules initially disputed but then decided that it just might be true: There was no sneaky tearing down of Rue by Elliot that I could see and the analysis he gave of Jules was again his own observation, which included him revealing his admiration for her and attraction to her. I found no nefarious intent at all.

I’m glad they’re showing this side of Rue. In last season they made us love and sympathise with her, which lead to many viewers glamorising and romanticising her and her lifestyle. By them showing her ugly side they’re making it more realistic and show the natural progress of how drugs have complete control to a point she looses her core values. Also although it was harsh to see her fall out with Ali, she seemed to be agitated and prob at the beginning of withdrawal, hence why her snapping and throwing all these things to Ali’s face. I think again it adds and helps it being more realistic, even though it makes her a less likeable character.
Definitely agree. I find it interesting (and a bit irritating) how so many people have said they hate Rue now because of the way she treated Ali - it was definitely wrong, but she was starting withdrawal, and we know Ali has done terrible things too. And it proves what Ali said in Rue’s special episode - that people turn away from addicts and end up feeling annoyed by their self-destructiveness, because some of the viewers are doing exactly that with Rue.

Honestly that was killing me lol how did they not realize?! Euphoria does this kinda thing sometimes, they should know that. It's mostly with Rue, like breaking-the-fourth-wall stuff when she talks to the audience, for example when she was a detective last season (WITH LEXIE as her 'sidekick' in the case). And even in this exact episode when Rue's talking directly to us the audience trying to plead her case about being a functional drug addict or whatever. This show tends to change it up sometimes and show weird/fun/dramatic takes on the inner minds of these characters. It makes so much sense to me that they did this 'tv show' moment with Lexi. Rue is the main character of Euphoria and Lexi is the childhood best friend / 'sidekick', and now they're having Lexi break the fourth wall and in a way interact with the audience, just like Rue does. Rue is even the only person who makes an actual cameo in Lexi's 'show' (when she was getting interviewed lol)

I absolutely loved the Cal backstory. It made me so sad knowing that we live in a world where people can't be happy. I loved all the music from that flashback. Utterly tragic. Apparently the actress who plays Kat, Barbie Ferreira, didn’t particularly like Sam Levinson‘s vision for her character and where she was going this season and they had an argument about it, which resulted in him cutting a bunch of her lines/scenes. So now I’m not surprised anymore that she wasn’t at the premiere.
However, I feel like they’re pushing a lot of characters to the side and give them only very few scenes that don’t even add anything to their character or the progression of the plot. At this point Rue really is the main character and you can feel that. The focus is very much on her + Jules and Elliot.

Elliot was honest about his desire to get with both of them and in his observation that Rue isn’t sexually attracted to him and doesn’t seem to be in his eyes, a sexual person, something that Jules initially disputed but then decided that it just might be true: There was no sneaky tearing down of Rue by Elliot that I could see and the analysis he gave of Jules was again his own observation, which included him revealing his admiration for her and attraction to her. I found no nefarious intent at all.

I’m glad they’re showing this side of Rue. In last season they made us love and sympathise with her, which lead to many viewers glamorising and romanticising her and her lifestyle. By them showing her ugly side they’re making it more realistic and show the natural progress of how drugs have complete control to a point she looses her core values.
Also although it was harsh to see her fall out with Ali, she seemed to be agitated and prob at the beginning of withdrawal, hence why her snapping and throwing all these things to Ali’s face. I think again it adds and helps it being more realistic, even though it makes her a less likeable character.
Definitely agree. I find it interesting (and a bit irritating) how so many people have said they hate Rue now because of the way she treated Ali - it was definitely wrong, but she was starting withdrawal, and we know Ali has done terrible things too. And it proves what Ali said in Rue’s special episode - that people turn away from addicts and end up feeling annoyed by their self-destructiveness, because some of the viewers are doing exactly that with Rue.

@@cycleoflife565 she went straight from Lorries to the meeting, so the drugs she would’ve taken before would start wearing off. When she got back to her room she got high immediarely and her “symptoms” - aggravation, sweaty hands, headache etc. stopped.

Honestly that was killing me lol how did they not realize?! Euphoria does this kinda thing sometimes, they should know that. It's mostly with Rue, like breaking-the-fourth-wall stuff when she talks to the audience, for example when she was a detective last season (WITH LEXIE as her 'sidekick' in the case). And even in this exact episode when Rue's talking directly to us the audience trying to plead her case about being a functional drug addict or whatever. This show tends to change it up sometimes and show weird/fun/dramatic takes on the inner minds of these characters. It makes so much sense to me that they did this 'tv show' moment with Lexi. Rue is the main character of Euphoria and Lexi is the childhood best friend / 'sidekick', and now they're having Lexi break the fourth wall and in a way interact with the audience, just like Rue does. Rue is even the only person who makes an actual cameo in Lexi's 'show' (when she was getting interviewed lol)

Jules having off vibes about him is her intuition telling her something. If you notice every time Jules questions him he finds a way to circle the conversation back onto her instead(being very nice/nasty towards her)…never really directing the conversation towards himself. Poor Jules doesn’t even realize it. I can see Jules getting sucked right into another codependent relationship. Jules is a caring person and that’s right up an addicts alley. Addicts can smell caring ppl from a mile away! I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some type of falling out between Rue and Elliot over Jules.

I think rue was very justified in her response to ali yelling at her. Although she did instigate the argument, he had a fist ready and was full blown yelling in a 17 year old girls face. I think her response was the only way for him to really grasp how scary he was being in that situation.

@@anonyee i completely get that and i'm not saying rue is a good person here; the recent response of everyone now saying they can't stick up for rue anymore hits weirdly to me because from my pov we never could expect rue to make any choices other than bad ones. Like what she said about him being an out of the picture father was terrible, even if she had just told him several times to leave her alone, but he should've just given her the ultimatum and walked away. Instead he gave off violent behaviour, yelling in her face so hard she had to flinch away, like a past abuser would, which was fucked to me. Of course that's just my perception, but i also think the people on ali's side could be biased since we only see him doing good in the present, talking about what he did wrong in exposition, whereas we're actively seeing rue make the wrong choices.
