I had virtually the same thing happen to me back in the early 80's with an NBA player. I was the only one around when I asked him to sign my game program, and he responded with sarcasm and walked away. I was so angry that I wrote a letter to the team's public relations office. A couple of weeks later I received a photograph of the player in the mail, signed "With due respect" followed by the players signature.
At Packers training camp I'd gotten a couple players autographs and then tried to get a third player's autograph. That player walked away with my autograph book. It's all good, Darren Sharper is in prison now anyway.
These guys are paid millions of dollars doing something they presumably love to do and are adored by thousands of fans yet can’t be asked to take the time to write their signature. Pretty fucking disgusting if you ask me.
Love your stories! You made it, almost all of us had dreams of playing in the Big Leagues or even playing college ball, but somewhere around high school or after high school things unraveled. It didn't mean those dreams disappeared, they are still deep within. Cool you made it and share your stories with us, hopefully some kids will see these videos! I ended up becoming a public school teacher, but my original dream was basically becoming Dale Murphy. But, who in the world can live up to 'Murph's standards of clean wholesome American Baseball? Hope you will encourage your baseball students to play clean and play fair, like yourself and Dale!!
Can you do a video on what you ate? like did you have a specific diet or was it just whatever and can you also do a video on your workout schedule and routine you had while playing?
I think you were totally justified in holding off on asking for autographs as a rookie. Your story about your friend who gets dumped on by the veteran player is the perfect reason why it’a wise to hold off. I can’t help but feel bad for your teammate.
Maddux was my guess as well. Me being a braves fan and hearing stories of Greg maddux, it sounds like something he'd do. Plus braves had a good following all over being on tbs. has to be....
Can you do a video on what MLB fanfests are like from a players perspective beacuse some guys are very nice at games when they sign but are not at fanfests and also the opposite
Players were getting McGwire alot in 98. I believe Greg Maddux did that,I heard this story before. Pitcher Hector Santiago collected a ton as did Pat Neshek.Neshek seems like a collector/collected mix!
I think you made the right call by not asking for autographs. I've never been in the positions you've been in, but I imagine it would just look unprofessional. If I'm trying to prove myself at something, I try to act like I'm been there before. Only comparison I can personally make is opening for bands I like. I'm down for a conversation, but I'd be so embarrassed to ask them to sign something.
Do you remember playing with a guy named John Madden, he was a reliever with a sinker in the mid to high 90's, he never made it to the majors but he played several years in the padres triple A organization, he makes UA-cam videos as well you can find him under "yougopro baseball"
Great videos Matt! Just moved away from living on the North Shore in Beverly. I'm a huge Red Sox fan too. Wish I would have found out about you and Antonelli Baseball sooner! Two quick questions, do/would you send autographs to fans if they sent you a ball or something to sign? Also, have you ever thought about trying out for a major league team again and attempting a comeback? (You should make a video on this!) Pedroia is getting old and you should totally try out for the Sox! Hahah
Are you a padres fan at all or do you watch any games of theirs to this day? They have a couple of exciting players like will myers or Brad hand but I know they haven't had a winning season since 2010. Currently watching the Mets play them
Antonelli Baseball I think what I'm trying to get at is do you have any affection or nostalgia for the padres since they were the one that gave you the shot, or do you just see it as the first team that happened to promote you? I know it must suck that someone in there stole your HR ball
It's funny, I remember that team. I grew up in CT so I'm a Red Sox fan, but I was stationed in San Diego in the Navy over on 32nd St. I remember going with a bunch of guys from my ship to see the Padres vs dodgers. Of course I only owned red Sox apparel so I got crap from other fans lol, but I probably saw you play a few times lol.
Ha! What a great story.. I'd really like to know who the player was. Someone semi-legendary who played w/the Padres circa 2007.. ? Sounds like something Maddux might do.
I just found you a couple days ago and I'm enjoying the videos. I'm curious what kind of guidance you get from teams about how to handle or invest money. I know the taxes get crazy complicated when you might have to file state and city taxes and would like to know what kind of information they give you about it.
How do u get tickets for family members when in the MLB? Does the club provide tickets for them? If so, is there a limit of how often and how many tickets u get for ur family/friends?
I know who it was. The guy who received the ball played for the Padres for two seasons (a pitcher) and the guy who signed the ball was also a pitcher for the Padres - a very well-known pitcher who most people don't even remember pitching for the Padres. So no - it wasn't Hoffman or Peavy. Look at the roster from that season and you'll likely figure it out.
when the kids were young I took them to some braves games at fulton county, back when they were losing 90-100 games a year, yeah I was a die hard, I went to get autographs twice, on one occasion I got Leo mazzones(sp?) the pitching coaches autograph and the other "players", a bunch of bench warmers on a losing team" that were there were just being total punks to the "crowd" of 10-15 mostly kids looking for autographs, second time, went down to find a couple of relievers, again guys that rarely played, and they were telling everyone they had to call them "mister" and beg them for the autograph... yeah I passed... haven't been to a game since...
Not only that, but imagine all the autographed memorabilia you could have got, and later down the road when your older, sale for ridiculous amounts of money.
Can you make a video if sport stars should be role models to kids. NBA (NBA cares) made long strides pushing the professional athlete as the role model. Can you share any stories being in the Yankee organization with A Rod, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera.
I'm a die hard Red Sox fan also, Manny is my favorite player also. It's hard getting autographs. How can I have your autograph Matt Antonelli? Please!! I have a few of your baseball cards.
No need to answer but my guess is that it was Greg Maddux who wrote the "FU" to your buddy. Maddux known to be a real asshole to fans and teammates. Read this tweet: Toucher and Rich@Toucherandrich Tom Glavine just told us Greg Maddux used to take shirts out of teammates lockers, wipe his rear end with them, & put back in their locker. 8:15 AM - Apr 28, 2016
Antonelli Baseball example, former Red Sox players..... lime Wade Miley. It's their way of saying "I played for the Red Sox" (I'm an O's fab, so I'll take digs😂)
That "F U" story is pretty funny. Not as funny as when Rickey Henderson, as a rookie, tried to get an autograph from Reggie Jackson, and instead, Reggie gave Rickey his pen that had his name on it (Rickey mentioned his in his HOF speech).
At the end of Nolan Ryan's career, players from the opposing team would line up to get his autograph after the game. Too may players are assholes about signing autographs. Chipper Jones was really bad. He didn't even want to sign balls for kids before a game. Too many of these players forget that fans are the reason they're in the show and making the big money. I was always impressed by Lempke. He was a guy that would make sure every kid got something signed before he left. That's why my kids always loved him.
I’m gonna guess it was Barry Bonds. I remember as a kid there was a bunch of kids asking him for an autograph at an astros game and he was such an asshole. He was cursing at fans it was ridiculous.

Great video Matt! I recently discovered that I have one of your cards. Do you have a PO box or somewhere that I can send it to get signed? Thanks!
Braden Olson no response haha

it's on the sports card forum website
Great Channel. Any insight on players signing autographs thru the mail sent to the stadium? Any info would be 👍. Thanks.
Can you do a video on what you ate? like did you have a specific diet or was it just whatever and can you also do a video on your workout schedule and routine you had while playing?
Yes I did videos on both if you go back and check out our playlist you should find it.
Antonelli Baseball ok thank you
Matt, thanks for taking time out of you're day to make these awesome videos! I look forward to them everyday
Thanks for watching!!!
I love this channel man! Awesome stuff. Some of these videos are stuff I've always wanted to know
How do you choose who to throw baseballs out to in the crowd?
I think you were totally justified in holding off on asking for autographs as a rookie. Your story about your friend who gets dumped on by the veteran player is the perfect reason why it’a wise to hold off. I can’t help but feel bad for your teammate.
You were being respectful. I admire you for it.
Thanks!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Have you ever considered playing in different countries' pro leagues such as Korea, Japan, or Mexico?
I did, but ended up getting hurt and missing a chance to play
Was the player in the "f you" story Greg Maddux?
Do you really think Matt is going to answer that?
Pierre Levasseur Maddux wasn’t on the Padres
Yeah he was, not saying it was him but he played with them the same time Matt did.
Maddux was my guess as well. Me being a braves fan and hearing stories of Greg maddux, it sounds like something he'd do. Plus braves had a good following all over being on tbs. has to be....
Haha everyone is guessing that lol
Hey Matt, love your videos!! Where can I get one of those dope Antonelli Baseball hats?
Jaelen Pace You have to play on his travel team
Trying to get them online for you guys! Hopefully soon!
Great video! Been waiting for this. Thank you!
Thanks!!!
Love the vids man. Keep em coming
Thanks for watching!!!
How does give out autographs to fans work
I put up a video a few weeks ago about it
It's gotta be Jim Edmonds or Tony Clark
Haha Tony Clark was maybe the nicest guy ever
I love these vids Matt, keep it up
Thanks so much!!!
Can you do a video on what MLB fanfests are like from a players perspective beacuse some guys are very nice at games when they sign but are not at fanfests and also the opposite
Interesting! I can try to put something up for you!
That’s an amazing line up card to have
Can you do a video about the grind - Travel, length of schedule, etc. and how players cope with it.
Yes absolutely!!!
Great thanks Matt!! I love your videos
Players were getting McGwire alot in 98.
I believe Greg Maddux did that,I heard this story before.
Pitcher Hector Santiago collected a ton as did Pat Neshek.Neshek seems like a collector/collected mix!
A video about all your favorite teammates would be cool
You should do a video on people asking for toss ups. Unless you have done one already. Love your videos matt
Ender Inciarte of the Braves just did the same thing a few days ago with David Peralta (I believe) of the Diamondbacks. Funniest thing.
Thanks for the videos. Any advice for a parent of a young player?
Thanks! I'd say just support them, but let them do their thing. Good luck!!!
Did you ever to get to meet Tony Gwynn?

How do you deal with trash umps as a player and coach?
Haha I go into the game assuming umpires will miss calls. I actually don't get too bad because I feel it will even out.
do you have any favorites on gear ? bats, gloves, cleats, etc?

Haha! Maybe, but I can't say lol
Ryan Drehmann That’s who I was thinking too lol. Gotta be Maddux.
Looking at the 2007 Padres 40 man, it really could’ve only been Maddux, Hoffman or David Wells. Maddux would be the biggest deal out of those three.
scottwidiculous Someone linked an article that said it was Maddux.
The ball would be a great conversation piece

"Avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan" - Hey, that's good advice !
My favorite coach of all time! Lou Brown also
How do u get tickets for family members when in the MLB? Does the club provide tickets for them? If so, is there a limit of how often and how many tickets u get for ur family/friends?
Each player gets a certain amount of them. Usually like 2-4. If you need more you borrow them from other players.
Hey, Matt great video!!! Who is your favorite current player in the MLB right now?
Thanks!!! That is a tough question. I can't say I have a single favorite player. I enjoy watching all of the top guys though
Who's the toughest pitcher you've ever played against
I made a video on it a few months ago. See if you can find it.

What is the clubhouse like
Nerd Stuff it's relaxed, play ping pong, watching T.V., video games, pool etc.
Some players just staring in lockers listening to music
Sure thing!
Antonelli Baseball I can't believe you replied to me Matt. Thank you so much
Do MLB players pay for there jerseys
Nope get them for free
Mickey Mantel was notorious for writing x rated stuff on baseballs. Makes them worth a ton more. 😂
Quick question, what are players usually doing when they walk down to the clubhouse in the middle of games or right after an at-bat?
bathroom
There's an article online saying it was Maddux
lol intersting!
What does getting hit with 90 mph feel like?
Depends where you get hit. Some don't hurt at all.

Can you make a video if sport stars should be role models to kids. NBA (NBA cares) made long strides pushing the professional athlete as the role model. Can you share any stories being in the Yankee organization with A Rod, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera.
Can u do a video titled does Aaron Judge swing up and tell us the answer like if u agree
I did a video on him about a month ago I believe
Antonelli Baseball I saw it thx though
I feel like all new MLB players have asked Jeter for his autograph when they first met him.
Probably!!
What made you decide to do these UA-cam videos?
Good question! I've always put out instructional stuff, but decided to answer people's questions about a month ago.
Antonelli Baseball yeah it seems like there's more and more questions in the comments for every video that you make.
Matt how did they tell u were being traded and what was the process
Call you into the office and manager tells you. You basically pack up your stuff, say goodbye to everyone, and hit the road lol
How was your high school career
Pretty good...I hit well and we won one state championship
Manny Ramirez was a beast on MLB 12 the Show
Yeah he was!
I'm a die hard Red Sox fan also, Manny is my favorite player also. It's hard getting autographs. How can I have your autograph Matt Antonelli? Please!! I have a few of your baseball cards.

I'm gonna guess that it was either Greg Maddux (Who is a Notorius Prankster) or Jim Edmonds.
What made you want to give someone ypur autograph?
Really just when they asked for it

Yup I’ve seen all that stuff lol Thanks for watching and commenting!
What was your main approach at the plate? And did it ever change through your career?
Yes changed a lot. Simplest approach was just drive the ball back up the middle
Why are some players jerks to fans when asking for autographs? 😂
Do players talk about the fans in the dugout and or clubhouse?
Good question! I think most are nice, but there are always some that are in a bad mood. And not usually I don't think. Thanks for the question!
Antonelli Baseball I hate it when they give a dirty look 😂
