I've been researching my ancestry for a while & recently discovered my 5th great-grandmother, Susanna Chavis, and her father Burrell Chavis, both of whom lived in Rutherford, NC in the 1800s & were called "free people of color"
We have the exact same family ancestry on my Mom's side, Susanna Chavis, and Burrell Chavis according to ancestry DNA website never really knew too much about the Lumbee tribes, but we did know my Grandfather's Mother was born in North Carolina she married a Payne, he was my Great-Grandfather of course 😊 My Grandfather always told me that he was Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Black Irish. Turns out the Tuscarora are a line from Cherokee. We've been doing more research to understand more historically how all this came about because many do not believe that's possible, and yet here we are😊. We're most likely connected on ancestry DNA if any family members through your line has taken an ancestry DNA test! Hope all is well.
I am a chavis my grandmother name was Sarah Chavis and she was born in south carolina my family is still there and my mother Lora Chavis was born in a shack in Halifax NC on a farm . a lot of my elders are gone i hope to find my family
My grandmother was Sarah Vivian Chavis. Her father was James Matthew Chavis who was Black/White/Lumbee from the Oxford, NC / Granville Co. area. I'm early in my search and cannot wait to find out more.
I LOVE the fact that it seems everyone IS related and can verify that relationship. Lots of respect amongst this group who showed up to listen to this knowledgeable man.
Very very informative and interesting. My grandmother was a Lowry, her mother was a Bullard. They were from North Carolina, Robeson county I believe. Grandma passed away in 1946, so I never had a chance to know her so I enjoy learning about her roots and her people.
Was watching this to learn a little about the history of the now Carolina area tribes as I'm part Cherokee in Alabama. Enjoyed learning the Chavis tie to my near local Poarch Creek Tribe. Also, as a farmer having worked with SC Crop Improvement to grow Cheraw soybeans in SE Alabama, so nice to hear a little history on the name, settlement, & tribe. The name I've traced back, with little research, is Perry.
I keeps seeing mentions on my family tree of lumbees with my goin grandmother that married into the moores an im also melugeon throgh some gibson an bolen lines I sure wish I could find a video like this on them especially my goin's family
Been doing alot of geneology searching on internet. Our family always said we were black-irish. I'm related to the Byrd's, Martin's, Gibson's, Mullins' coming out of the Carolina's. They settled in Ga. and Ala. and it's come to my opinion and attention , they did all the hard and/or dirty work for the families with money who were going to benefit from poor pioneers. After the civil war our men married women from wealthier families and our "black irish" mystery began to get buried even further. My mom and dad did dna tests and they both had trace amounts of African dna and my mother has native american. But she's from early pioneer arkansas/Texas people. But my gmother, a martin, took one look at her, olive complexion, green green eyes and black soft curls and said "she's kin". Most Southerners who go back to 1600s are genetically related to these people. If you are from Southeast several generations back, you are looking at your colonial ancestors when you look at these folks. They still live close to tobacco farming which is what caused our white servant ancestor gmothers to mix with Atlantic creole gfathers. tobacco farming needs to be replaced with healthier lifestyle and is not blessed. neither is gambling. I'm not shaming them. I'm glad they survived. much love to our southern kin folk. They are who they are. And Carolina is where they became who they are. Everyone should read and learn about John Ross the Cherokee leader. No one should have been moved to Oklahoma, but moving the Cherokees was kicking family members out of the house. like a divorce.
I have Chavis in my family as well, Abigail Chavis was my 5th gg. Phillip Chavis was my 6th gg. so many of the names he called out on the power point stood out. i tell my kids that all the time becareful who you date we may be related. lol
I relate to that statement about the family being one thing in South Carolina and moving to North Carolina and becoming Lumbee. It seems like that when you follow the paper trail. But when he said, “they knew there was a settlement there and they knew they had relatives there and they didn’t have to be black or white there”. That helped me understand why my family left SC to come to NC.
Is there any evidence of a Lee in the lumbee tribe? I have seen this documented but have not heard that surname among lumbees. I have a hunch it may have changed somewhere along the lines. I am trying to piece some things together in my family. Seems like some big family secret Thanks!
Yes there’s many a Lee’s in the area of Robeson, Scotland, Hoke county. Many of them lumbees, many of them not. Even the ones that aren’t certainly has some lumbee ancestors as do Lumbees like wise have many Non Lumbee ancestors. Very mixed people.
Nice video - would also like to see something similar for the Locklear/Oxendine family as Johnny Wayne Locklear and Elizabeth Oxendine are my 4xG Grandparents. Their son Joseph was a Loyalist in the Little Pee Dee militia in South Carolina who went to Canada for a time around 1810 and had my GG Grandfather who started the Locklien/Locklier branch of the family in Ontario and Michigan in the mid 1800's.
My paternal Grandmother was Ethel Shavers. Her Father was Andrew Jackson Shavers, Jr. His Father was Andrew "Andy" Jackson Chavis. His Father Willis Chavis (1802-1892) His Father William Chavis (1770-1857)
I havea Halcot Jacobs as well...Hannah Blount...and John White...which my genealogy records keep crossing into this area of North Carolina but then the trail runs cold.
My great grandmother is Hattie Chavis from Lumberton NC. Her son is Roscoe Blount...they Lumbee. My grandfather was a full member but he divorced my grandmother after five years of marriage. And he moved north to boston. The traditions and way of life vanished and the generations after didnt seem interested.

There were many Jordan's but none fit mine, we have never been able to find his parents or his wife, all descendants are known but the brick wall is Jordan Chavis, b. Cheraw SC, c. 1793, d. 1874, Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was a FPOC. Mr. Cooper can you help me?
