Motanka

The motanka doll is one of the most ancient handmade items in Ukrainian household. Initially fashioned as a domestic symbol of fertility and household guardians, these dolls played an important role in the everyday life of Ukrainians in the old days. Ukrainians used to believe that motanka protects the house from evil.
We know Ukraine will win, we call all the good powers in the World to protect Ukraine!
On the slice of rye bread
On the black slice of bread
Leave your despair, your dread
Just keep crumbing the slice
Let it be food to sparrows,
Feed them every last crumb
So that the birds could speak
In their full voice, let them come
Pray into every crumb, say the spell for luck
And for the strength like that of a Cossack
When your fiery heart will develop a sight
Your witchy words will have magical might
Speak in whisper, scream till you ache
Speak with your mouth open or shut
Speak from the depths of despair and pain
Yet speak softly and tenderly from your heart
Put your spell in the crumb you warm in your hand
Put it in the daily bread
Feed the messengers, open your heart
Let them live what you said
Ask for a warm bed for the embrace of the loved one
For a gentle sunrise for you and me
Ask for the healing of your wounded comrade
Who survived an attack with the IED
Keep asking for Ukraine, never stop
And when the messenger birds will pour
The bread crumbs on the heavenly plateau
God will call upon all your kin
To prepare harvest, to sow
And to grant you what you asked for
Because those will receive everything
Who are willing to part with all they own
On this slice of rye bread
Pray, pray for your road home
