This definitely shows the power of pickups! If the LP wasn't shown I would have 100% guessed it was a traditional single coil guitar. To my ear they really have a cool Jazzmaster tone to them - big and bright! :)
Super cool! Hearing pickups that sound like a cross between Jazzmaster pickups and Rickenbacker Toaster Tops in a Les Paul was quite a cool experience!
Really emphasizes the already surprising similarities between a Les Paul and a Tele! If you swap them into a Tele, you should do a controlled tone comparison between the two guitars with the same pickups in them!
The pickups are definitely butter, a very thorough demo. At 5:12, I like your decision to have Daphne Blue and Surf Green eye candy over your left and right shoulder!
They sound really nice actually. I was surprised at how much I liked the neck pickup. With the outer pole pieces being so far away from the traditional placement, I would have assumed that it would have lost it's mojo. Rather like a 24 fret neck pickup in comparison to a 22 or 21. Great video Darrel, cheers man!
Proofes again, for a fender like chimey and bright pickup, 2 most important things seem to be A: singlecoil B: Polepiece magnets ^^ . Have you tried (regular sized) P90s with pole magnets? they also instantly sound more "fendery"
frans venrooy yeah, he’s definitely using a gate. If you are listening on headphones, you can hear the hum coming in when he’s playing. It’s not the worst I’ve heard, but it’s typical single coil stuff...
Hi! They definitely make noise like a Jazzmaster pickup or typical P90. I didn't use a gate in this video, but if I let the clips go on longer you would hear a lot of single coil hum (especially with gain).
At the risk of repeating myself, I would recommend including some tips about ensuring you can pull the new pickup wires into the control cavity before pulling the old wires out. In lots of guitars, fishing new wires through small holes will be incredibly hard unless you have a "fishing wire" that is attached to the old pickup wires before you you pull them out.
I'd replace the neck pickup with it, and leave the stock pickup in the bridge. That neck pickup has a nice, snappy, kinda Fender-style tone with some niice attack but still warm
Darrell, I love that you bring us reviews of "unique and interesting products". It would be really interesting to see these pickups de-constructed. I would love to see you review the Free-Way 3-Way/6-Position Pickup Switch for T-style guitars (as available from StewMac).
@@littlesnowflakepunk855 guys who are at the point of spending 200, 300 , 400 for pickups are sorta beyond the "MOAR GUITARS" stage 99% of us live in i think and more in the "I want to make This guitar perfect" stage .. (hey im with you it HURTS my soul to spend 75 on a pickup)
Darrell nice, very interesting sound. I went “Whoa as well! A unique look, sounds like a super charged country kinda Tele. I could immediately hear some songs that would work. Love the easy plugs. Thanks.
Nice articulate pickups...you can hear the string as it were....clear n clean...you can hear the pick .....something you dont often hear. The only pickups i have that are that defined are a pair that the late great Jim Cairns (burns pickups...) wound for my japanese jazzmaster....the only ones in existence as far as i know...he wound them by hand.....and he liked to hear how you played and sounded before winding pickups for you...I would love a set of these for my customised surfcat....I reckon they sound very Mosrite Nice Demo Darrell...as always...tasteful and fair Cheers Wulf
Really tempted to throw these in a Jazzmaster for kicks. My current pickups seem like they're very bass heavy and I can barely hear the top strings. These sound super nice and bright tho!
I like these pickups, but I'd want to hear the reasoning behind the placement of the pole pieces. The striking appearance is obvious, but I can't see why this particular pattern offers any musical advantages. I've never noticed that the middle pair of strings need any particular emphasis, and I don't see why they would need the same emphasis - given that one is wound and the other plain - or why it would make sense simply to reverse the pattern for the other pickup. What I do notice is that they have the clarity and detail I associate with low wind pickups. I see that the manufacturer quotes DC resistances of 'mid 4K for Neck and around 5K for the Bridge'. Playing clean, you will need to be very accurate and your guitar will have to be perfectly in tune, because you're going to hear everything.
That had me wondering too. I've seen pickups where the magnets are in-line but tilted (Fender Telecaster bridge pickup). I've never seen this arrangement!
I've always wondered why someone hasn't made a pickup that had staggered design especially since there are some guitars that have the pick ups set in at an angle. I have another idea as for as this type goes but am glad to see this.
Good way to clean up the mud in a neck position. Awfully bright in the bridge. Not my bag, but it you're going for that Brian Setzer tone, then these are perfect.
Slick design. I can't help but wonder what it would sound like if you flipped the bridge backward, though... Not sure I like what it did to the mids when gain was brought in, but something tells me it would sound sick reversed or with another neck pickup in the bridge!
The neck sounds amazing clean n dirty n I dig the bridge on dirty but that’s not unusual for me I hardly like bridge pick up. And the look awesome no doubt. Unfortunately only Humbucker guitars I have our in bridge position. Great demo
With distortion the bridge sounded like there wasn't really much more bite than the neck pickup... It kinda sounded like each was a bit... middling. Like the neck pickup had tiny bit more bite than you'd expect from a normal neck HB, whereas the bridge sounded a bit more like a neck pickup than a normal bridge HB. So basically, to me they sounded like pickups that provide fewer tonal options than average.
Darrell, have you ever purchased entwistle hv58 humbuckers? Are there big differences in cheap vs expensive humbuckers when it comes to lead wires for soldering to pots? I'm trying to find an decent set of humbuckers for an harley Benton (prs semi-hollow) that are clear and crisp.
I'm assuming to eliminate the 60 cycle hum the E-A-D stings are wound together and the G-B-E are too, placed separately on angle? If so, reminds me of Leo Fenders design in his "Z" pickups. Very cool design idea to fit in a Humbucker case for better esthetics. While practical for replacing with normal humbuckers. Another Great Vid!! Thanks
The design of the cover has me imagining Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley singing into it - reminiscent of a Shure 55SH. Definitely makes it a "microphonic" pickup, but in a completely different way. :)
Hello! Recently found your channel and I love what you do here! Could I request that you install these in a semi hollow humbucker tele like you initially suggested? I have a semi hollow PRS and I would love to hear these in something similar. Thank you for the video and for any help or advice you can offer!
"They are single coils, like humbuckers"
- Darell Braun, 2019.

Thank you, I was like " HUH? "
@Zoot Rollo My Les Paul already is mounted on my Tele.
@@BobaFettBountyHunter That's hot.
You caught that too?
Visually makes me think of an EQ
Pushed mids at the bridge, scooped at the neck.
Russ Desaulniers I am curious about that. A little surprised he didn’t compare them that way.
I thought the same, like maybe they were somehow adjustable
The thumbnail made me think it was a tiny EQ pedal
This definitely shows the power of pickups! If the LP wasn't shown I would have 100% guessed it was a traditional single coil guitar.
To my ear they really have a cool Jazzmaster tone to them - big and bright! :)

it technically is a single coil winding
Makes sense. I mean no one sold more LP’s while playing a Tele than Jimmy Page on Stairway to Heaven. 😂
It’s because « they are singlecoil, like humbucker » 0:25 😂
Robert H man that's hilarious!
Sometimes the truth hurts so good. 👍🏻
Seeing those slots, I immediately thought the magnets were 'adjustable' !
THAT would be nice !
Thats what I was expecting/hoping for as well
The main reason why I clicked
I don't know why that hasn't been made yet
Now flip the orientation of the pickups!
YES!
I was thinking the same thing. Turn each pickup 180°
Definitely different, I’m not sure if I care for them though. Thanks for the video.
when I first the image I thought , "what the hell! the poles slide?" It's nice idea.
Love your channel! The technical stuff can be complex but you make it very easy to understand. You’re doing great work, kudos.

But what is the amber fade guitar behind him? That one looks awesome but I don't think I've seen it here
I have never seen or heard of a pickup quite like that before! Definitely mixes tones and changes things with a twist!
No middle position demo?

I see the Schecter you have back there. Hopefully you make a video on it, because I’ve heard great things about that model.
Unique pickups for a unique channel with unique content.

You should had tried them inverted! That would be interesting to hear how different they sound?
Wow, I am fairly impressed. The chime of a single coil with the grit of a humbucker. Nice!
So unique, they sound pretty cool! nice vid man
Darrell, how good or bad is the 60hz hum on those? I'm sure you were using a gate in your demo.
You HEARD it! Pretty noisy!
I don't think so! They are very noiseless.
@@fransvenrooy4760 You might want to listen on a good stereo system! Trust me they were noisy!

Those pickup covers are the same as Ibanez put on the humbuckers that came on the original Icemans!
Can’t believe how good they sound. Great video Darrell
Not a fan of the pickups but I really like the wiring demo!
Never heard of these. Great demo/review. They sound very good. God bless and rock on!
Really cool but $260 is a kick in the nuts. I'd rather get some P-Rails for that
This sounds similar to the GFS Surf90. That is on about $35.
A pair of covered duncans is $200 these don't seem that crazy. The ones in the video though are listed as $130 for a set rn
@@oneeyedlittleman no that's only for 1 pickup. Also a huge used market for Duncan's
$260 is a decent budget guitar...

Extremely clear and clean but can get raunchy!

They are very bright because of the 500K pots.
Hahaha.. I initially thought they were 6-band EQ pedals 😅😝

That would be cool, like you can adjust where it picks up each individual string.

I hope he got a discount on the Les Paul for the 3 or 4 fisheyes in the paint job, you can see them pretty good when he angled it just right
I gotta say that after the first few notes I like the tone ☺
does anyone have a tab for the lick at 3:05? can anyone make a tab for it cuz it sounds really cool

Cool pickups, thanks for posting this.
It's be really cool if you could change the EQ of those pickups of the polln pieces slid in those slots but I don't know how you'd wind them
The bridge pickup makes that LP sound like a tele
Those would look great on a flying V. Not usually something I would go for, but those would complete a look.
Wow they sound great! I could certainly use these
I think the pole pieces on a slant in both pups would look cool on an Ibanez with shark tooth fret markers.
that would be a cool change for a HH telecaster for sure.
Sounds really sweet!
3:22 may just have sold me on the idea

making a Jazzmaster build these would be fun!
Maybe it's your playing style, but eyes closed that was 100% a telecaster sound.
Totally agree.
A little more jangly/chimey than a Tele imo, but it's definitely a Fendery sound
id have laughed if anyone had told me this and i didnt hear it.

Maaan... Heavy Tele vibes 🤔 awesome 🤘🏼

The neck pickup has some god damn SAUCE. I’d leave the bridge a humbucker personally this one is too thin. But that neck tone though
these remind me of SD's Phat Cats tonewise (humbucker-sized p90).

I was afraid this would happen one day. The last standardization left on the guitar thrown into chaos and madness.

Thought it was thin sounding UNTIL the drop D riff... pure viciousness.

Now just waiting on my new pickups :D
What’d you get?
Check it oot! That Canadian accent man! Great pups by the way D. Check it oot! Ha!
Too metallic sounding for me. It took the Les Paul out of the Les Paul in my opinion. I am sure they are good though.

David, I went to the web page and the maker says it is one large triangle winding, so it will probably hum like a P90.
tried it, now put the others back in. seems like it just makes it sound more like a fender? thanks was interesting.

I want to hear what it would sound like with a lollartron in the bridge and one of those in the neck on a Semi.
Looks cool. I like sound of the neck but not so much with the bridge. But that's just my opinion.
These would be split coils no? They would also be hum cancelling if that was the case.
