Great model there Sam. Those carflats take me back to my 70's train spotting days. They used to run on the old Motorail services between major cities and to tourist destinations in places like Cornwall and the Scottish highlands. Basically you would rive to the station, hand you car keys to a member of staff and go sit in a standard passenger coach. The BR staff would drive your car onto a small (4-5 normally, but I have seen up to 10) of those carflats via special loading ramps. (the ramps at Bristol Temple Meads are still there, although out of use). The flats would then be shunter to the rear of the train, and the off you would go, When you got to your destination, the train would divide. The coaches to the platform and the flats to the loading dock. Many destination stations had special motorail lounges where you relax in BR comfort with a cup of BR coffee while your car was unloaded and delivered to a pick up point.
For best use of them as a model run a few of them (with a few cars) behind 4 or 5 BR mk1 or mk2 coaches in blue and white livery, and haul with a meaty old diesel. Devon and Cornwall bound trains used class 52 westerns at first, then 47s and 50s in later years. Other regions also used 47s along with Peaks although doubleheaded 25s were not unknown
    Good review.
    Hope all is well

Hi Sam, nice piece of rolling stock, I remember these back in the day, heading to exotic places like Penzance from London. Yes I did say Penzance, not very exotic these days.! It was very posh back then to put your car on a train and take it on holiday with you.! You cannot do that in the 21st century, now you get to sit in a hard badly designed seat from London to Penzance for five hours, with no buffet on the train, and then get charged the price of a airline ticket to New York on concorde, that's probably the reason you cannot take the car with you now in the 21st century, no bloody money.!

Carflat wagons had wooden ends that dropped down and rested on the buffers, so the cars when loaded could be driven the length of the train, when it consisted of more than one wagon, the yellow items were indeed "chocks" that went under the car wheels.

Here in France we had the "auto-train" service were passengers could had their cars transported with them on a mixed train, cars were on double-decker flatbeds and coaches were fitted for night trains. You could book a trip, board at a specially designed station in Paris (Paris-Bercy auto-train station, with car loading ramps), sleep in the train during the night, and wake up at the French Riviera with your Aston Martin at the doorstep of the station, a valet handling you the keys.
That was pretty stylish and had accustomed customers, but the cost of refurbishment of the sleeping coach terminated all night trains in France, including this peculiar service...
By the way your Aston Martin looks pretty nice, paint and chromes are realistically shiny and details are pretty good for the scale.

Amtrak (here in the States) used to have a service similar to this, in which people could travel in comfort in the passenger cars, while their autos were loaded onto auto racks and coupled behind the passenger train. This way, when you got to your destination, they would unload all the autos and you didn’t have to rent a car there. I don’t know if they still do this - I doubt it.

The huge concrete loading ramp for these wagons is still in existence at Fort William Station. The end shutter of each wagon could be folded down and then locked to allow a continuous "driveway" over the entire train of wagons so that cars could be loaded efficiently from front to back, and then offloaded at its destination.

The loops on the wagon ends are themelves buffers - they rest on top of the wagon buffers when the ends are dropped down to allow cars to roll along a rake of wagons when loading and unloading. A *possible* point of contention here: I can't find an original photo, but I *think* that brake lever at the left hand end (facing) is either the wrong way around or shouldn't be there at all.

The 'things' at 8:16 are supports to make a flat floor to allow driving the cars over the buffers.
There might be a metal plat hidden somewhere inside, as there seems to be nothing else keeping the frame torsion free, but there are no tell tale signs of that visible

Hey cool! Those mechanical pivots you mention at 9:16 are actually for semi-proper close couplers. They're basically standard here in Germany for good H0 scale rolling stock and engines, as our close couplers require such mechanisms as to not cause problems when reversing or navigating complex curves and switches. If you wonder what these couplers look like, just google "Märklin Kurzkupplung" or "Roco Universalkupplung" for some pics... you may only find stuff in German, but the pictures should more or less tell you everything.

You absolutely can haul these with a steam locomotive. New cars were regularly delivered to Bathgate in West Lothian in the 1960s on wagons like these. I have a picture in a book with a train of them double-headed by a black 5 and an A4! That would be an interesting train to re-enact.

Wonderful. Perfectly balanced on all terms for the price indeed. Metal seems rare these days. Märklin used to be all metal frames and metal inner shell of the bogies, but then were lacking detail at ridiculous pricing, but they would happily survive a child's play of course. For fine details as a serious hobby, ABS injection seems to beat diecast I suppose. By modern paints, one can hardly see the difference anyway.
Autozug (auto train), they were called in Germany but they were double stacked. You could book a vacation/holiday that way. Those wagons were of course also used by car manufacturers for transporting and exporting new cars on the continent.

I remember seeing Motorail, pretty sure T Paddington, in 1979 which was pretty much getting to the end of the service. Passengers would indeed take their own car so save the drive from A to B (they’d travel in normal carriages) but that was from the time when cars were unreliable, barely reach 60mpf screaming the guts out of the engine and no motorways or dual carriageways etc. By the late 70s Motorail was barely needed.

Those yellow bits are chocks for the wheels, not exactly clamps but you got their purpose spot on. I'd have thought if they were built from 1959, they would be suitable for steam haulage. The coupling mechanisms on these are great, but those on the mk3as aren't as great because they sit between the chassis bottom and the interior detailing piece which uses screws that are too short so it pops apart. (Not saying the mk3as are bad, but their couplings and the too-fine roof bands (plus the intercity grey not being quite right) detract a bit from what is a fantastic model.)
I bought 2 of them when they first came out, they're fantastic vehicles. They tend to bounce apart sometimes, so I need some hunt close couplings to fasten them together closely, but I love running them. I'm now considering getting a bachmann one, since 3 carflats is a better match for 7 passenger vehicles than just 2, but £33 for a coach without a body/interior is quite a bit.

Just a theory but I think those protrusions on the end of the wagon are there to rest on the buffer beams. As they would have to lower the end of the carflat to have cars running from the loading bay down the train of multiple carflats. They act like the tender footplate between engine and tender.

I think the little yellow (green?) things in the bag are wheel chocks. Absolutely necessary for a rolling load like autos, or lorry trailers (or the occasional farm tractor)! Don’t want those rolling around, even without “loose shunting”. That would be bad. 🙃 Tie-downs and chains/straps are also called for, for safety concerns. But try modeling those in OO scale… 🤔

Monorail as the passenger car service was, was one of those things that seemed like good idea, like the nationwide Euro Star or the Channel Tunnel Sleeper trains but simply could not work commercially in a country the size of the UK. This was it involved driving to one of the few loading depots and departing on the very irregular service to somewhere vaguely in the region of where you wanted to go i.e Scotland or Wales. When you finally arrived there was also more than a good chance that some scallywag had lobbed half a brick through windscreen as a bit of school holiday entertainment. Quite simply it cost a lot more and was good deal less convenient than driving to your destination and so despite many efforts by BR it always flopped.

I think the latest period these ran to was the 1980's as Oxford diecast do have a set of cars in what they call a motorail pack and they also do packs for 1960's and 1970's cars. I think by the 1990's they used the double deck car transporter wagons to transport new cars. Motorail was brought back for a short time in the 1990's with the new privately owned company first great western but it was never successful and the wagons used were a bit like the Eurotunnel train car carrying carriages.

I rather like the green/yellow depressed-center flatcar, has properly molded (separately applied?) tie-down chains, but the arch-bar trucks (bogies) would be more appropriate for U.S. rolling stock up to about the 1920s or so. Can anyone confirm if this is prototypical (for this model)?
