    The Wizardng World has introduced us to some of the most amazing and astounding creatures that we could ever imagine. We’ve seen it be taken to the next level with the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which is one of the few positives we can take from that ongoing story, however, the creature I wanna talk to you all about today is manifested directly from a certain practice of Dark Arts. An Inferius, or known collectively as inferi, is a dead body, a reanimated corpse that will do the bidding of the dark wizard who has raised it. In today’s video I’m going to explain the origins and history of the Inferi, their strengths, weaknesses and the dark magic behind their re-animation, known as necromancy. It’s a video i’ve really put a lot of work into making so I really hope you all enjoy it. Welcome back to the world of Harry Potter everyone, this is the inferi explained.

    The phrase “Necromancy has never worked” comes from the idea that it can’t bring people back to life, not that they couldn’t creat an Inferius. I don't see how Regulus could have become an inferi, other inferi can't just "infect" dead bodies and multiply - it would require a wizard to animate him and the only one possible is Voldemort.
    Now we know he never found out that Regulus was in that cave, if he did he would most likely would investigate how he found out his location and (assuming he wasn't aware to the fake horcrux) would abandon it as an hidden place in fear that other could also locate it.

    Well, technically, there should be no difference in making bodies move to making statues or suits of armour move. So I find it weird to call it necromancy, as it is actually golem crafting. If you raised people from the dead, with their original memories, wills, regrets... then I would regard it necromancy. Making zombies, moving mummies/skeletons... without a will of its own, they are just corpse golems

    • @Happy9Lover3
      @Happy9Lover3 4 роки тому +8

      Not necessarily
      Necromancy is to control the dead, since you control the dead bodies of once alive people means it falls under necromancy.
      Keeping this in mind, the question is more does this fall under transfiguration or dark arts since it has attributes of both.

    • @w0t3rdog
      @w0t3rdog 4 роки тому +5

      @@Happy9Lover3 I would say the matter is more subjective, as I would state that the spells necessary wouldnt be deemed dark arts in other circumstances. E.g., bombarda can be used to blow a person limb from limb, but it can also be used for swift home improvements, knocking out walls and creating new doors. Is it dark or not? Does magic know the difference between an inanimate suit of armor or an inanimate heap of flesh and bones? I think there is just a regular golem spell and a preservation spell at work here, and modern ethics is what condemns it.
      Imagine an immortal workforce, never resting, eating or even getting sick/injured. Having your loved ones contributing to the wellfare of humanity after death. Mankind would have reached post-capitalism by now if it wasnt for immoral ethics.

    I personally don't really think Voldemort would go through the trouble of fishing out Regulus Black from the cave pond in order to turn his body into an inferi. Like you said, each inferi is individually created after obtaining their body. Plus Voldemort probably wouldn't go to the cave regularly to check for new bodies in the lake when he and his death eaters already make their own dead corpses on a regular basis, plus going there regularly to increase the already large number of inferi might draw too much attention to the cave and endanger the horcrux's location.

    It takes a dark wizard or witch to create an inferius, and Voldemort did not return to the cave to check on the locket horcrux at the bottom of the bowl filled with potion. How do we know this? The fake locket and Regulus’s note was still there for Dumbledore and Harry to find more than a decade after Regulus placed them in the bowl.

    Thanks for the video Dean! A very interesting topic indeed. On Inferi and necromancy in general. I would assume many wizards throughout the centuries would have tried to understand the secrets and mechanics behind such magic. Possibly even some alchemists or other scientists might have as well, just like Dumbledore and Grindelwald. It is as they're almost some kind of distantly related creatures to Dementors or something, despite the fact that Inferi are just reanimated corpses. I just find this topic disturbingly fascinating, to be honest.

  • @VictorScrooge

    The only way Regulus could have become an Inferi, in my understanding, would have been a ritual of sort.
    What if Tom set up the ritual to be performed by the victim itself. The crossing over the water, like the river Styx where you left your past life behind you. The drinking of the potion, the water that makes you forget. (The river of crossing Lethe. If I remember that correctly there are three rivers in the greek underworld. ) After you drank the potion you could become an Inferi when you die directly thereafter.

  • @Gyarren
    @Gyarren 4 роки тому +1

    Maybe the reason why Dumbledore couldn't create Inferi was because he, subconsciously or otherwise, really didn't want to. Even when he was in his "let's subjugate the Muggles" phase, he maintained that he was unwilling to use excessive force to achieve his goals; maybe he thought an army of nigh-indestructible walking corpses was a tad much. Maybe he thought of his mother as an Inferious, and the image horrified him so much, he abandoned the idea.
    For someone like Voldemort, who had no ties to loved ones, no conscience, and an endless supply of bodies at his disposal, well...
    And wouldn't Voldemort have to turn Regulas into an Inferious? I don't remember the lore saying anything like "those who are killed by Inferi then rise up and become one".
    Probably, they just drowned him, or tore him to pieces, and his body rotted away long ago, because it wasn't protected by an anti-decay enchantment.

    Of course not. Voldemort did not even know that he had been to the cave and discovered his locket. From what I understand of the Harry Potter universe, he would’ve had to perform the spell on regulus’s body. Whether RAB would become an infiri is a good question. If he would simply become an infiri by drowning in that lake, then it is possible. However, if someone needed to perform necromancy on his body, then I don't believe he was one of the infiri who attacked Harry and Dumbledore. No one except Kreacer knew that he had been to the cave until after Harry and Dumbledore went there.
    I apologize for spelling mistakes. I hear names. I don't read them.

    The reason Dumbledore marked necromancy to be a branch of magic that never worked, was because the original intention of necromancy was to bring the dead back to life. Necromancy was probably first experimented with to challenge the lack of an effective spell, that could bring back the dead, and one outcome of this experimentation was the curse that could produce inferi.

  • @abhishekaryan3749
    @abhishekaryan3749 4 роки тому

    I think Dumbledore only said that Necromancy is a branch that never worked as it never became possible to bring back the dead just as they were when alive. Creating inferi is just one of the applications of Necromancy and it was also stated by Dumbledore that inferi were not seen for a few centuries and imlying that it has been done before by dark wizards. I believe Dumbledore and Grindelwald gave up on the idea of inferi as their use in a war is quite doubtful as they can not distinguish between friend and foe. Dumbledore wasn't surprised that Voldemort was able to do it.

    I believe RAB would have been lying as a corpse under the water, but wouldn't have been an inferi, because Voldemort didn't know he had been in the cave as Kreacher wasn't allowed to tell anyone and how often would Voldy go back to the cave and check on his locket? He couldn't have been told by anyone that someone had touched the water, so RAB would just have been killed and that is the end of him

    Necromancy is often different in fantasy and mythology compared to Harry potter. One major difference is a necromancer would need to plant a pseudo soul in the body as magic being used to constantly reanimate the body would destroy it.
    Necromancy should also technically allow one to not only stop decay but also cause it. If Grindelwald decided to research further into necromancy it's likely he could figure out a spell to cause rapid decay in people killing them instantly. As there is magic that already involves aging it's highly likely you can make a curse like that.

    It's not that Albus didn't believe that you could utilise inferi in this way or reanimate a corpse, its that necromancy, ie, raising the dead, didn't work in the proper sense - as in you couldn't bring the dead back to life, which is why Albus and Gellert were interested in it in the first place, in order to bring back Albus' dead sister. Its also for this reason Gellert sought the Philosophers stone.

    unlike zombies, the victim of an inferi does not become one of them. voldemort never knew of regulus' plan and had no idea harry and dumbledore had taken the locket. it seems likely that voldemort never returned to the cave to check on his horcrux, believing it to be guarded strongly enough. with nobody there to enchant regulus' corpse, it just stayed bloated and preserved under the cold water, unanimated, and undiscovered.

    I personally believe that Voldemort would have enchanted the lake to turn everyone who died in the lake, into an inferi, therefore increasing security everytime one got to close to his horcrux, so yes, I think Regulus was amongst the inferi that attacked Harry and Dumbledore.
    As for Necromancy, I don't think Dumbledore saw it as an impossible art because he couldn't create an inferi. In all fairness, I do believe both he and Grindelwald were surely able to cast the spell to create an inferi and the Resurrection Stone would just made it easier to increase their numbers. What I think Dumbledore meant with the notion that it is futile to try to raise the dead, is because you can't truly restore life completely. There isn't a spell that can truly ressurrect a deceased person, bring them back, fully conscious and in their body. You can re-animate the corpses but they aren't their former living selves and while you can summon spirits, they are still spirits and eventually will have to return to the afterlife.

No magic can resurrect truly resurrect the dead as far as he knows.

    I don't think that Dumbledore was shocked by the Inferi, or thought they were impossible to create. From the text of the Ministry's warning, it seems Inferi were known, if despised and distasteful, creatures.
    I believe that when Dumbledore said that 'Necromancy is a failed art', he was referring to the inability of Necromancy to bring the subject back to his/her previous life status. After all, Dumbledore was never interested in creating hordes of mindless followers or Inferi. The only purpose he would have for any magic that deals with the dead would be to bring back his family, especially his little sister, something Necromancy could not do. The best it could do would be to turn the bodies of his loved ones into empty husks with no soul or consciousness. Therefore, to Dumbledore, Necromancy was indeed a failed art.
