  • "This is the year two thousand and twenty. The place is the Challenger Sea Mount, the top of an underwater mountain, a complex beneath the sea. Two hundred and fifty men, women and children live here. Each of them, a scientist pioneer. For this is our last frontier, a hostile environment which may hold the key to tomorrow. Each day, these oceanauts meet new challenges as they build their city beneath the sea. This is Sealab 2020." With these words setting the stage, and some funky bass riffs setting the tone, Saturday morning TV took the 70s underwater Sci Fi adventure plunge. Ably overseen by Hanna-Barbera's ace action animators and voiced by a superb cast (including John Stephenson, Ross Martin, Jerry Dexter and Ann Jillian), the oceanauts of Sealab face seaquakes, sharks and falling satellites while finding the time to serve up lessons on environmentalism, tolerance, and teamwork across this 2-Disc, 13-Episode Collection.

    We could definitely build Sealab today. There are no real technological hurdles to it any more. Just no one wants to spend the billions of dollars it would take to do it, for what would likely be minuscule material and scientific returns.

    This show may have been extremely cheesy, but it _does_ admittedly teach some pretty interesting facts about marine life. If anything, the first episode of this show actually taught me about decompression sickness, also known as "the bends".

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 2 роки тому +1

      If you want to know a great way to see both the bends and high pressure nervous syndrome, I suggest you watch the Abyss. The former show's what happens during a scuba accident as well as alternatives to tank breathing called liquid breathing. It's exactly what it sounds like. They even used a live rat to show how it works. For the latter, a naval officer overseeing the operation they were using wasn't properly cleared, so they didn't know he was going nuts from that until t was almost too late. Didn't help that they were dealing with underwater aliens that hate nukes.

    Just re-watched the first episode on this, a Saturday morning. I really liked this show when I was a kid. It, along with Flipper, made the life of an oceanaut seem so exciting. In fact, 1972 was the first memorable year for Saturday morning cartoons for me. There was The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, ABC Saturday Superstar Movie (with the memorably bad Lost in Space ripoff), Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space and Sealab. 2020 seemed so far away at the time. But almost five decades have simply flown by. Messed up in my memories, though. I thought for all these years that Sealab was on ABC sometime early, maybe 9 a.m. Turns out it was on NBC at 11. Made the mistake of watching one episode of Sealab 2021 on Adult Swim. What an atrocity.
