  • Chistye Prudy, officially also Chistye Pond (currently there is only one pond) is a pond in Moscow. Historically, near the walls of the White City; since the XVIII century - on Chistoprudny Boulevard. The park area on the boulevard also bears this name. There is no consensus on the origin of the name "Clean Ponds". According to the most widespread version, in the XVII century there were "Filthy swamps" or "Filthy puddle" on the site of the current Clean Pond. The origin of the name "Filthy swamps" is also unknown for certain. The main version says that the pond was called "filthy" because sewage and waste from butcher shops located nearby on Myasnitskaya Street were dumped into it.Chistye Prudy received its modern name after Prince Alexander Menshikov ordered the "Filthy Ponds" to be cleaned at the end of the XVII century and forbade the dumping of sewage there in the future.
