I stopped watching the beauty community. I just wanted to figure out how to put on eye shadow for a wedding. I'm a "just lipstick" kind of person most of my days. (I'm lucky. I have nice skin. It doesn't break out a lot.) I always liked Wayne Goss. He used real people and he called out filters and that kind of crap. Even now, if there is an event and I need to figure out something, I'd probably head over to Goss' channel and look through the various videos. (Please note - I haven't watched his channel in a while. However, he was the biggest help when figuring out how to put on eye makeup and I loved his positive attitude.)
I have never figured out eyeliner. I can barely swipe on mascara. (And I never remember to buy that stupid eyelash curler that they all use.) (My trick, just using a q tip - don't judge - and smudging it on the upper lash line. My eye senses my fear and goes twitchy crazy when I approach it with eyeliner. I can't say I blame my poor eyes.)

The beauty community has really ruined the word 'guru'. Where I live, the word means teacher, mentor, or expert. It's a sign of reverence when you refer to someone as your guru, it has a completely different connotation...It's just cringy when people associate something as frivolous and vain as the beauty community with this word.

Yeah, as a gay guy, I get extremely disgusted with glorifying the pursuit of straight dudes. It's definitely not just James that does it, and honestly glad he was called on this because it's a conversation that we need to have. Gay men are only now attaining the same rights as others, and now it's almost considered "cool" to be supportive of everything gay guys do. And, in fact, I think people are scared to critique it because they don't want to seem problematic.
Honestly, Unnatural Vegan, your criticisms of your vegan community have inspired me to start making videos criticizing these things about my community (i.e. the gay community). 🤔 There's a LOT of content that could be made from that.. because, trust me, the gay community has *SO* many toxic norms.

I think that promoting sugar bear hair was the last straw rather than the one specific reason she came out. I think her Bye Sister video was a long time coming. Tati doesn't like scandal, so I can understand why she waited for so long.
I will probably never bye Halo for the same reasons you said, and I also think Tati used the "scary chemical" argument wayy too often. I wouldn't take her advice on that type of stuff. That said, I love Tati as a person and I do trust her opinions of if a make up formula works.

    • @mollytornado

Vitamin supplements are only useful for people with deficiencies, certain medical conditions, or who are in certain stages of life. You should aim to get all of your nutrients from a well balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Supplements can cause you to go over the safe upper limits of nutrients, especially if you eat fortified foods/drinks and are already getting enough nutrients from your diet. This is why you should always consult a medical professional before taking any supplements, along with the fact they can negatively interact with prescription medication and be unsuitable for those with certain medical conditions. For most people, dietary supplements are a waste of money. It's also worth mentioning that a significant amount of the studies done on supplements are funded by the supplement industry.

It was because she agreed with his first point of not promoting vitamins for teens but he evolved to a point where hell sell out his fans for artist passes, and that clearly showed that she couldn't keep him grounded in reality. I also don't think she's happy that she's got these subscribers this way or that her words would cause this much damage to James, because Tati had a small 2/3 less subscribers than him. Nice bonus: She doesn't really promote buying new products as much as using the things you already have at home. For example, she says "use a medium brown eyeshadow". She is such a successful celebrity Make Up Artist that she doesn't rely on her YT in any way, it is simply an educational tool for her. Over the course of 10 years, she has only ever launched one limited edition beauty product, which was a lipstick, that took years to develop. The response to her video showed even more that everything she said was true and people who are in the industry (who aren't involved in the drama) said that they heard only good things about Tati. And I think to clearly realise that James Charles was only using her and to see how disloyal he truly is, was her breaking point. She also stated she was patient and stuck around with James because she viewed him as a son, not a friend, which is why she never jumped ship on him. So for her to stick around for all of that and build him up to where he is today, him lying to her and turning around and promoting her rival clearly cut pretty deep.

Yeah, I agree. Tati's video makes it clear just how much she cared about him. She feels hurt and betrayed and I don't blame her.

She's 37 years old. If James Charles is the worst of her problems I really envy her. He's a very immature millionaire with a heavily inflated ego and he's 19. There's a chance he will grow up in the next few years but unfortunately for now he's not a person to be trusted. Lots of people turn out to be disappointing. I'm sure he would have hung himself eventually with enough rope without her cancelling him.

Ngl I don't blame Tati for dropping him over the suppliments thing, he went against her essentially, but I kind of take issue with how long she let him being inappropriate with straight boys go on.
Clearly people have known about this for a while, and as his mom friend so to speak, or even as a close friend, she should've been calling him out on this sooner.
You can't just let this kind of thing slide because he's young and maybe he'll grow out of it. You sit that boy down and you tell him what he's doing wrong to his face and you be sure he listens. If you wanna see that boy grow up well, you have to tell him off when he fucks up.
Idk, if it was my friend, I would've put my foot down about this much sooner

@@CrowSyndicate when you're wearing rose colored glasses, red flags just look like flags. It's easy to say what we would have done from an outsider perspective, but when you're an empath or just really love someone, it's easy to make excuses. She even recognizes this in her video.

I'm so glad you're addressing that these "vitamins" are a fraud. These beauty gurus/companies are just here to sell their products without ensuring any scientific evidence that supports the benefits of these "vitamins". I'm happy that you're using your platform to educate people on facts and put down false information.

As a teen I understood that magazines were Photoshopped, but I thought, "There is a reason they are Photoshopping these pictures, this is the ideal human form and what I should strive for." I didn't realize it was unrealistic

Samantha Ravndahl actually stopped receiving all PR from brands due to the amount of waste it creates and excessive product that she will never get to. I really respect her for that and trust her opinion on make up and brands. Tati does huge unboxing videos of the PR she receives but mentions numerous times about the wastefulness of the elaborate packaging and obscene amount of product.

Ewww the photoshoppers took Faith Hills collar bones away what are her arms supposed to hang on? Thanks for the reminder I'm one of the ones who keep forgetting these images are not real.

Tom Jones I seriously though the untouched photo was way more beautiful. Faith Hill is gorgeous so the retouching was totally unnecessary.

16:58 There are certain beauty youtubers that focus on enhancing what you've got, like John Maclean
I've always seen that as a more reasonable approach: "Yo your skin uneven or you've got dark circles? Welcome to being human. Here's how to smooth everything out"

Samantha Ravndahl is a great beauty UA-camr to watch, in my opinion. 1) she has made a huge shift in her consumption, namely by removing herself from all brand PR lists so that she doesn't receive boatloads and boatloads of products to review and then throw away in incredibly wasteful promo packaging. 2) she pushes back against the parasocial interaction in some interesting ways. She doesn't try to be your friend and convince you to buy things because you're "buddies". She reviews products, gives her opinions on them, and evaluates her opinions on whether or not products are worth the price she paid. 3) she's upfront about having struggles with her skin, and has been pulling away from Facetuning her pictures in favor of presenting a realer image.
Also, Nyma Tang is a great UA-camr who brings tons of attention to shade inaccessibility in her series, The Darkest Shade. Just the fact that this series exists is good, I think, but as a very pale person, having a tangible and focused source of insight into the challenges of someone on the "other end" of a shade spectrum, and it seems to me that this increased visibility will (hopefully) encourage brands to cater to a larger customer base.
