that guy I agree that not buying leather (or just not buying it *new*) is one of the easiest ways to not mess up your vegan status. I don't have sympathy for vegans that buy leather products. There are so many vegan options. Medications and cars on the other hand cannot be avoided. Buy used leather products (cars) when unavoidable, and we're golden.

that guy you are definitely correct. But depending on your definition of Veganism none of us are really Vegan.
I choose my definition to be "to the best of my ability" Some people's abilities simply happen to be weaker than mine, and I don't fault them for that.

That's like killing one person is better than killing 100.
If you are vegan and claim to be a vegan proudly, especially on the Internet with influence, you need to actually be vegan. Otherwise you're showing others that "sometimes" consuming animal products is okay.
I'm seeing these videos everywhere at the moment and I'm honestly shocked. I didn't know this thing would happen in this movement.
I'm 100% vegan. I will not buy something that contains animal products KNOWINGLY. I will go out of my way to find things not tested on animals etc.. people calling themselves vegan and not caring half the time, are part of the problem.

I recently accidentally bought a granola bar that wasn’t vegan (had egg white protein) and I ate itanyway since I had already taken a bite and I was at an airport with no vegan restaurants available, waiting on a delayed flight etc., no point I throwing it out so I just finished it. I wear suede and leather that I had from before I was vegan, to me it’s disrespectful to throw those products out before their time. am I not vegan anymore? honestly, people slip up. People have constraints sometimes. People learn. A vegan best be defined as someone who meaningfully and truthfully attempts to reduce animal suffering through any vegan means, disregarding minor digressions that may be unavoidable for some people. The majority who contributes some will do more than the some who contribute the majority.

Rinnekid I agree! Although I STILL have this small bit of guilt from eating a salad with cheese on it after not eating for 12 hours in the charlotte, nc airport where I couldn’t find any vegan options and this was the ONE vegetarian option a few months ago. I’m not perfect, but it is hard (for me) to get over it ethically when I slip up.

Had the same thing happen to me at an airport. I was beyond jet lagged and went to a restaurant, ordered mixed vegetables and noodles. Seemed safe to me. Half way through eating the girl who took my order came up to me and asked if I was vegan, which I told her yes I am. She then informed me that my noodles might contain chicken broth. I thanked her for letting me know and finished my meal. I never intended to eat chicken broth and honestly it really upset me. But it was paid for. What was done was done. In my mind it was better to not waste what had been purchased already. And I don't think my "vegan card" should be taken from me because of that either ;p The joys of trying to eat when travelling, lol. You can plan and plan but sometimes things like this will just happen.

Rinnekid - To your ''Disrespectful to throw those products out before their time'' stamement. I also kept and wear my ''I HATE ALL ASIANS'' shirt. I can't afford to buy something new, and I bought it when I was racist. But I'm not anymore. So everything is fine, I can still wear it. And also, its really good quality and can last me 4 winters. And also its not it's time yet, and so that is a good reason to still wear it. Because I honor that I don't support that statement anymore by wearing it. Yep. That makes totally sense.

Why can't people see that? Its SOMEONES SKIN, not A PRODUCT! Once you get that out of your head you'll realize it's so disrespectful to keep wearing it. You are not honoring the death of someone by wearing their skin.

I still use my leather boots that I bought before I went vegan too. I also kept wearing my wool clothes for some time but eventually I bought some polar stuff and last winter I just wore those. Cause the damage was already done but I think buying a car that includes leather parts deliberately after becoming vegan and killing insects while driving a no-leather car involuntarily is not the same. So we still need to push forward and show that we care about every aspect to those industries. I mean I don't think that it's OK to buy stuff that is non-vegan after making your choice and give the wrong message to those industries.

If someone knowingly buys a product with honey in it, they aren't vegan.
If someone knowingly buys a product tested on animals, they aren't vegan.
Mistakes happen and you can accidentally purchase something you thought was vegan etc.. but knowingly consuming animal products or honey means you are NOT vegan.

With art supplies, I use professional and traditional media, you can't get vegan products. Synthetic brushes are a waste if you try to use them with oil, and several mediums contain honey or other animal products. But I'd rather buy high quality products I can reuse for generations (I have things pasted down from my mother and grandfather) than buy something new because it contains no animal products.

    • @SilverNachtmahr

mintjaan T H I S. There's one professional watercolor brand that uses synthetic ox gall afaik. ONE! My favorite paints that I got as a gift contain honey. I'm not vegan, I'm trying to reduce animal cruelty and go mostly no plastic - but what am I supposed to go, dump them out (they contain cadmium btw) and buy new supplies that I can't afford because... purity? I have the luck in that I can freely use synthetic brushes, but to be honest with you, they don't last as long as a good, natural hair brush. I still have the same red sable brush I got with that set and it hasn't lost its point, while most of my synthetic brushes are nearly dead by the 4 year mark (especially those #1 detail brushes). I think that as long as you take really good care of your non-vegan stuff, it's okay to use it.

I still call myself vegan, but for restaurants, I typically don't get nit-picky about the ingredients (which I think can make veganism a better experience for servers). If the restaurant has an online menu then, of course, I will check the ingredients and see if they have a vegan/vegetarian menu, like Chipotle. If they don't, I just don't order things with obvious ingredients, like cheese, meat, sour cream, etc. At Mexican restaurants, I order black bean soups a lot, which probably have some percentage of chicken stock, but if I got a burrito then there's also a chance the beans are made with lard, and the rice with chicken stock as well. I also don't check for crushed bugs (like carmine) in foods with color, such as slushies, snow cones, etc. This honestly keeps me vegan.

    1) I use cruelty-free hair products that contain honey, keratin & silk amino acids (99.99% of the vegan hair products I've researched are not made for thick, Afro-textured hair)
    2) I buy leather shoes every 2 years or so (I have huge feet, the shoes last longer & I work in a conservative corporate setting)
    3) A veggie burger menu option that I order as a dinner option when I work late likely contains eggs or egg whites; I haven't checked but it seems like it.
    4) I eat Kind bars every so often; they contain honey.
    5) Based on this video, my razor heads likely contain glycerin.
EDIT: 6) Oh! I drive a car, too.

I'm not trying to be that person. All of these "cheats" are perfectly fine. I am also not African American, and my hair probably isn't quite the same. I am Maori, and my hair is thick and frizzy and difficult. I go to a hairdresser who uses a non-vegan shampoo and conditioner, and I don't care, because it took me years to find him. Normally hairdressers didn't get my hair, literally abused me, and I left crying every single time. I have found a good vegan shampoo and conditioner, but I also use a lot of argon oil, and the lifesaver, I use coconut oil as a hairmask, and leave it on for twenty minutes before I comb it and wash it out. These are just some extra things that you could try, rather than replacements as such- and I also know that I don't know whether those things would even be effective at all. I'm just mentioning it, because the coconut has done so well for me.

A couple of years ago I fell on hard times. I started to collect parcels from a food bank as I wasn’t financially stable, due to being made redundant and with a vegan family to feed. There was no option to collect a vegan food parcel and I found that the parcels contained a balanced diet based on an omnivore standard. The packages where given by others in the community some even included inspiring notes. With no choice my family ate from these packages, the way I saw it an animal had sadly died and suffered for this, if I had thrown it away that would have all been for nothing. And honestly the amount of ridicule I got from my local vegan community was horrendous. I was being told I was a vile mother for feeding my baby’s rotting animal flesh, when it wasn’t what I wanted but it was feed them the parcels or have them starve. I was already mentally unwell due to the situation and I felt as if my home community was against me. Luckily everything turn around for us and we ended up in a good financially stable place. To this day I still make sure to donate as many vegan food parcels as I can to that very food bank as what I experienced was horrible. Especially form my community that was supposed to be a caring community

I don't care about being the perfect vegan, I just care about being able to live without causing a lot of harm whilst also being able to live a life and potentially show people that veganism doesn't have to be difficult. I don't ask if chips/fries are cooked with meat when I'm out for a meal, I don't ask if a veggie burger contains egg whites. I don't actively avoid beeswax because I feel like bee farming is actually helping bees to not go extinct. If I accidentally buy something not vegan (as long as it's at least vegetarian), I eat it because I've already given that money to the industries so there's no need to waste it. I feel like a lot of the issues around people becoming vegan stem from this idea of perfection. People think that they need to either be a perfect vegan or not be a vegan at all. Think how many more people would change their lifestyles if you just said "hey, don't be perfect, just be the best you can practically be". I've already managed to get my brother (a giant meat-eater and athlete who thought veganism would be bad for working out) to start considering it and cutting back on his animal intake. My sister went fully vegetarian a few years ago thanks to me. My mum is also beginning to enjoy eating vegan meals with me almost every night. All because they see me setting the "imperfect vegan" example.

Breathing Oxyjenn there’s no such thing as a 99% vegan. The goal is to reduce animal exploitation and suffering as far as practically possible. That doesn’t mean not stepping on an ant accidentally. It also doesn’t mean eating a bug in a salad accidentally. But by definition it certainly doesn’t mean going to a steak house once a while or buying candy bars with breastmilk of a cow inside. And no, traces don’t count as non-vegan. Even vegan products have the claim “may contain traces of...dairy, eggs, honey, etc.” That’s simply for legal reasons in case someone is allergic. It doesn’t mean you aren’t vegan if you ingest traces. Get your definition right UV. Defending stupid candy bars and cosmetics that are being tested on feeling and suffering animals for pure selfishness has nothing to do with the definition of being vegan at all.

I think vegans are those who no longer even see meat/dairy as food. If there are those who want to eat meat and dairy every once in a while, I think by definition they are not vegans. Going vegan really isn't a choice as much as you stop seeing meat/dairy as food, period. I really didn't even plan on going vegan nor did I want to, but once I started to empathize with the farm animals who are so abused, my mind just stopped seeing them as "food source"

@Kira: exactly, and I think "that guy" completely missed the point of this entire video. I'm not vegan, I consume few animal products and source them from local farms (admittedly more easy since I live in a rural village). I do not buy from the meat, milk or dairy industry; I use natural products with no animal components for hygiene, etc. I do all I can to support animal rights. I think all of us doing our part in any way we can should be encouraged and not discouraged. I was happy to see this vid because I thought, "Well at least one vegan in the world doesn't hate me because I'm not 100% and never will be". Then people like "that guy" jump in and they try to discourage people all over again from their high horse.

ive been subed to you for a while now and i have to say you have started to affect me in a positive way. I started out at believing that veganism is just a trend but through your videos i changed my mind. Almost without realising i have reduced the amount of meat products i eat to almost twice a month when they were present in my diet at least 3 times a week. i honestly would change dairy products to non dairy but, unfortunately where i live and on the budget i am i cant do that.. (the cheapest almond milk is over 3 times more expensive than the normal one!!) i am in no way a vegan and i doubt i will ever be but i have learnt to... kind of only consume what i actually need. i know this is not important at all to most people but it is to me so yeah.. thanks.

I personally buy second hand clothing and I prefer to purchase the natural products because they last longer and pollute less in washing and decomposition. The plastic we replace them with aren’t good for the environment, people, or animals in the long run. Is my clothing “vegan?” No. However the mindset of reducing production with animal products and the plastics is end game vegan. The legalism in the vegan community is awful and there is more than one way for sure to do a vegan lifestyle.

I would recommend watching "Those Annoying Vegans" video on their cats and what they feed them. Unfortunatly I have seen A LOT of comments, saying that they feed their cats a vegan diet.... I have been told so many times that I am a "bad vegan", "don't care about animals" etc.
I LOVE my cats and they get the best cat food I could find - and of course it contain a ton of meat. The video I am talking about really made me sure that I am making the right choise about feeding me cats WHAT THEY WANT TO EAT. I'm super passionated about this topic, because people have really brought me down for feeding my cats what I feel is best for them. And the best is non-vegan cat food.

I was just thinking about this last night! Specifically when people are transitioning from non-vegan to vegan, stop making them feel bad for not going 100% vegan overnight! If people have eaten meat and dairy with every meal for their whole lives, what is the likelihood that they will completely give that up and never ever eat non-vegan items again? Even if people go from a meat heavy diet to eating vegetarian meals a few times a week, I’m proud of them! For some people it is extremely difficult to give up those food items and their effort still matters!

Used to be friends with someone but she kept doubling down on just how vegan she could be. That's great if that's your jam but often times they turn off more people from trying to chose vegan products or have meatless monday because what does it matter. Being a „perfect vegan“ is truly radical in todays society. In a predominantly non-vegan society, what matters is making mostly conscious choices on a daily basis instead of bashing yourself for eating an animal product or even a trace of it, or buying yourself a lipstick you‘d like with beeswax in it, as long as you are conscious about it, which keeps everything minimal anyways.

    • @lauriieee
      @lauriieee 6 років тому +1

Thats my opinion at least. I‘m being hated on by vegans for using some non vegan skincare that works well for me or eating cake or mcdonalds every now and then, yet ignore that I eat plantbased 25 days a month and try to be ressourceful when it comes to the leather goods or beauty products I use. It is venturing more into religious devotion or occultism to me, rather than trying to promote conscious living.

If someone has a leather couch from before they were vegan they could always sell it and donate the money to an animal shelter/sanctuary (if they're in a financial position to then go out and buy a vegan couch). It's just an idea if someone really doesn't want their couch anymore but I definitely agree that they shouldn't really worry about it.

I have serious question, if you dont mind.
Lets say I am a vegan and I sell that couch. Why should I donate that money to an animal shelter/sanctuary when there are bunch of charities I can contribute when it comes to children, poor families with no electricity, or sick people?

Wlof25 I think you can do whatever you want with the money tbh. You don't even have to donate it. It's just a suggestion if someone feels bad about their couch and selling it seems wasteful, that way at least the animals get some sort of benefit from it. Or children. Whoever.

I use L’Oréal hair dye 3-4 times a year. While L’Oréal is CF in the states, they sell in China. As a US citizen, the products I am using are not tested on animals. That’s enough for me.
I don’t use chapstick that often but if I am in pain I WILL stop by a gas station or grocery store to grab some regular chapstick.
I would be an asshole if I said no to my grandmas shortbread cookies at Christmas time, one of the few times a year I can see her because she lives out of state.
Im a poor college student, I don’t have time to be picky about what razors I buy.
I don’t return food if I ordered it without cheese and it comes with it. That would be a waste of food and I’m paying for it anyway since there’s no price deduction for having it removed in the first place.
If I’m on a road trip and my only option is a Burger King morning star patty, I don’t feel bad about eating it.
I don’t ask restaurants about what broth, frying oil, etc they use. If the menu item contains no meat, dairy, or egg then that’s enough. I’m not going to stress out an already busy server over it.
I don’t purchase bottles of honey and don’t really purchase items with honey unless my only option is a Kind bar or something with honey. Plus sometimes Jamba Juice forgets I asked for no honey on my smoothie bowl. I really don’t care about honey too much though since its super rare I actually purchase it. I’ll eat something that is technically vegan but has honey like baked goods if they’re available at a school or work function.
When I can afford shoes, I won’t buy fully leather ones, but if they happen to have small amounts of leather I don’t get upset by it because I don’t have the money to drop $80 on a pair of vegan versions of Vans.
Finding a good faux leather belt has been impossible for me. Had to resort to an inexpensive leather one off amazon and it’s lasted so much longer than the faux ones. Which means my overall consumption is lower which I think is still a good thing.
    STILL VEGAN.

I think there are levels. It's up to you which level you are on. I don't usually tell people that are not in my circle that I'm vegan unless the conversation calls for it. If I'm offered animal products. I simply say no thank you.
I don't want to tell people what I eat for protein or hear people go on ad nauseam about how they could never give up meat. I didn't ask you to. I was just eating my chickpea sandwich minding my own business.
*I am not at the level of giving up
    old leather.
*I'm not at the reducing the use of plastics level.(I recycle though)
*Definitely not at the composting level.
*I don't buy honey but if its in a plant based food. I'll eat it.
    * If an insect is in my house, it's dead.
I'm at the entry level. I eat plant based meals and I don't intentionally buy animal products if I can avoid it.
    Probably about 75 percent vegan.

I agree. My mom told me that my brother watched a documentary on how animals die when grains are harvested so I’m “not even vegan” and it was so annoying. It’s truly impossible like you said to be a super strict insane idea of veganism.

    • @itsathay

That's bs... more grains are harvested to feed livestock than to feed humans, so considering veganism aims to cause the least harm, being vegan would still cause less than being non-vegan.

The difference is, killing the insects is completely unavoidable. Like when you go for a run and you swallow an insect by accident. Kalel knows exactly what she's doing, buying candy with milk, buying leather boots etc. These acts are intentional, not accidental, or even out of ignorance. It's directly supporting the industry and can easily be avoided by simply not buying them.

On your freeganism video I made a comment about refusing to get rid of my leather birkenstocks I acquired before going vegan and was absolutely roasted for it. Just thought I’d update that I wore the leather birks until they no longer have treads on the bottom and are a slipping hazard. I purchased a vegan pair of birkenstocks, but also kept the leather birkenstocks and use them as outdoor pool or lake shoes to keep them out of a landfill and prevent my new pair of shoes from receiving damage.
Also, during the birth of my 8 month old son; we both would be dead right now if I refused medication. So fuck that rule

Honestly I was extremely turned off by veganism and being cruelty free until I saw your videos that were like "Do what you can, everything makes a difference!" and it pushed me to being cruelty free for 2 years now and I've been pescatarian for almost a year now. I only eat fish maybe once or twice a month and I try to minimize dairy.

    • @itsathay
      @itsathay 6 років тому

Cruelty free also means not eating foods that come from the death of another being. Of course, it's better to reduce than do nothing at all, but why would veganism put you off. You clearly want to reduce the harm caused to animals, whether youtube vegans are fucktards or not, you can still do it. The aim would ideally be to not consume any animal products. 2.7 trillion fish are killed for food every year in the wild,... the ocean isn't endless, you know. 120 billion are slaughtered from fish farms. Do you really need that fish? I know they look a lot different from us and it's harder to understand their pain, but even if you don't care about that... it's just not sustainable to be a pescatarian :(

Thank you for not being awful. I commented on Kalel’s video agreeing with her- I myself only being “98% vegan”. I got so much hatred for my ideas and opinions (someone even mentioning RAPE - thankfully that comment was flagged and deleted) As I said in my comment in Kalel’s video - I call myself vegan because that’s the idea that I identify with most and people understand that label - just like I say I’m Irish even though I’m not 100% Irish - I’m mostly Irish and I identify and have most of my characteristics from Irish people. Try your hardest, educate yourself and others and still remember that it’s okay to sometimes put your happiness and mental health first, because you are also very important.

vegancarblifter I try my hardest, but like Swayze stated, I still have food in my pantry that isn’t vegan (that no one wants) and I don’t want to waste. I have never even looked at my old clothes (I don’t ever buy clothes, they are all five+ years old) so I don’t know if all of my clothes are vegan. And I definitely eaten a food item after I paid for it (and delivery) when it wasn’t 100% vegan because I hate being wasteful more. I say I’m vegan because people have a basic understanding of what that means but those who truly know me knows my much more complex feelings about veganism, the environment, and how everyone in society be treated.

    • @lizzicostello61

that guy “veganism does not require perfectionism”. You’re right. It doesn’t. It is so very hard to be perfect in anything you try to do in life. I cannot donate already opened products (like waffle mix) and my friends and family have no interest in taking them (and if they take them out of pity and they go to waste than is that any better?) Labels can be bad, but they are there for a reason. They help you easily identify something. If I can’t say that I am not a vegan because I refuse to waste what I already have, then is swayze a vegan? Is anyone a TRUE vegan? “Breaking” veganism is already hard enough on my own self worth, but to have people I don’t know tell me I’m worthless because I’m doing the best I can is where I begin to become disgusted with the whole idea of veganism. Don’t be the Westboro Baptist church of vegans and make everyone hate and question why anyone would want to a part of something so disgusting because of the way you preach it.

You can be 98% vegan but don't call yourself vegan if you are going to consume animal products knowingly.
If you have products in your pantry and can't give them to friends or family or homeless shelters etc.. and you actually want to consume them.. you still aren't vegan.
I had stuff in my pantry and fridge after going vegan and I did NOT eat it. I'd rather 'waste', than eat that disgusting corpse or secretion.
You aren't vegan. Great you are on your way though.. but this shouldn't be an argument!! So confused at how it is.

I think the underlying point of Kalel's video and definition was to gently critique OTHER vegans who do use that definition. I don't think she was actually trying to say that she's not a vegan, it was more of a way to demonstrate through subtle satire how damaging these strict definitions are.

I have to say that it's good to have a process and learn. I think most vegans are understanding of that. Even militant ones. But when some vegans try to justify, if they are doing something that is so far from veganism - THAT is not okay. You have to act on what you know. So if you already know that buying leather products is actually cows skin and they suffer and die for it, and you buy it anyway because of ridiculous statements like ''I can't afford none leather shoes, because they break'' or other egoistic statements like that, you can't call yourself a vegan. Nope :) Because that cow couldn't afford to lose it's skin, and that goes with anything else non vegan.
But I honor your process of becoming more vegan.

I also know that pet food is made from bones, meat trimmings and organs, so the animal already died to feed another human, so it was already dead and the parts would usually go to waste. I have very few brands that I can use without severe reactions and they are not labelled cruelty free. For myself, I just choose not to wear make up.
But my niece is required to wear make up for competitive dance and needed my help putting it on when she was young. So we had to buy the brands that are safe for me. This bothers those pushing the cruelty free movement. Too many can not understand that experimenting with brands can put me in the ER so we try to use a little of the makeup as possible. Hi :) so I’m going to be honest here... I was vegan for years. And I never had any health issues from it...and it only did good for my body. However, I was taught by a lot of the vegan community that if you can’t eat fully vegan, then you can’t call yourself a vegan.
I do a lot of traveling and sometimes find myself in 3rd world countries that don’t have access to vegan foods.
So I eat like a 98%-99% vegan lifestyle but when I travel if there isn’t a vegan option then I do my best.
I made a UA-cam video on the subject a couple days ago (I just started a UA-cam channel lol) and I just wanted to be honest about it.
I don’t know, it just didn’t feel right calling myself 100% vegan when in fact I wasn’t always able to eat 100% vegan.
I wanted to be honest you know? I think I feel the need to be a perfect vegan because that’s what a lot of the community taught.
I didn’t want to say that I follow something 100% when I can’t always follow it to a geographical situation.
I’d appreciate thoughts on this, but as long as they’re from a place of kindness and not to be demeaning.
I’m doing the best I can, and being plant based 98% of the time is STILL saving animals and helping the planet... I’m grateful there’s a lot of love in the vegan and plant based communities :)

I only watched 3 minutes of your video but I think I get the gist of things.
"Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."
If I need to buy a car and I can't afford a vegan car, is it possible or practicable for me to buy a vegan car? No. Therefore I can still be vegan while buying a car that is not fully vegan. (There is no possible/practicable vegan alternative)
If I need to buy chocolate and I can afford to buy vegan chocolate, is it possible or practicable for me to buy the vegan chocolate? Yes. Buying non-vegan chocolate would be unnecessarily contributing to animal agriculture and therefore not vegan.
I don't understand why some people have such a hard time with this. I use medication because it's necessary in most cases. I am still vegan because I don't contribute to animal exploitation or cruelty unless it is absolutely necessary that I do so.
Flexitarianism is awesome and I totally support it. I am so proud of friends around me that are going plant based and vegetarian. But if my vegetarian friend called themselves vegan, I would say "Hold up, but you still eat eggs weekly. If you call yourself vegan, people will believe that eating eggs is vegan. Don't call yourself vegan until you're living vegan."
I ask you this: Does contributing to animal cruelty and exploitation UNNECESSARILY constitute as vegan? No.
Kalel is doing an awesome thing. I'm not going to say that a person is vegan or not vegan, but I will say that purchasing non-vegan products and therefore contributing to animal exploitation and suffering is not vegan.

The idea that you have to be a 100% perfect vegan, or you shouldn't bother at all, actively deters people from adopting a vegan diet. I have two friends who are vegan, but have serious chronic health conditions that require medication. After seeing some of the particularly nasty comments about medication and veganism online, they were scared to become vegan for such a long time, for fear of abuse and being made to feel like they could never be "real" vegans. As far as I'm concerned, being vegan in every area of your life except the medication that you need to survive is so much better than feeling like you can't be vegan at all!

THANK YOOOU I once ate a leftover duck dumpling and piece of sushi with fish inside cuz otherwise it wouldve went to waste and ive got questioned SOO much, trying to explain it to other people without shaming me is almost impossible. This is the first time ive seen this issue adressed and honestly bless your soul, cause ive started to genuinly feel bad for eating food that wouldve went to waste either way.

I also wish she hadn't repeated the rigid definition. I don't know any vegans who'll choose not to buy something because the packet says 'may contain traces of milk' etc.
The thing with the non-vegan candy four times a year bothers me. Now her viewers will think 'If veganism is too hard for Kalel - who once made a video crying after watching Earthlings urging everyone to go vegan - then I won't even bother trying.'
There's loads of vegan candy, particularly in LA! And if she really feels the need to continue to eat them every now and then to stay mostly vegan, I'm not sure it should be advertised to a million viewers. Overall, she's done so much good, but I can't imagine this video in particular having a positive impact.

I don't think it was meant to be about the candy bar. Of course she could find replacements but I think it was about the idea of not being perfect no matter what form that might take. I see what you mean about sharing it with so many people but I think the positive impact in that regard outweighs any negative impact because it takes away the shame of imperfection in general - not just about a candy bar. And it motivates people to go and stay vegan because if this one tiny thing which is holding you back is the reason you're not taking the plunge then by all means have the thing and do your best the other 98% percent of the time. It detracts from so many claims of "I could be vegan but..." and from what I gather, Kalel is saying okay is the "but" a candy bar every few months? Okay then do everything BUT the candy bar - that is totally okay. and maybe in time you'll let the candy bar go. it's your journey. Start from where you are and go at a pace that provides the most secure long-lasting change. That's what I got from it.

she’s still doing more for animals than people who don’t try at all. she mentions that she’s mentally exhausted with trying to be perfect all of the time, and i think the point of her video was trying to be honest with the internet for maybe the first time ever, when so often she’s so upset with herself and her videos that she mass deletes ALL of them several times a year
to say that she’s sending a bad message to her viewers is really untrue for people who suffer mentally in the same sort of way that she does

Also, many "may contain traces of..." products are certified vegan. There's a vegan company from Berlin, Veganz(they have supermarkets and their own product line, and even some of their items have that disclaimer because they probably rent facilities/equipment to produce a lot of their packaged stuff. It just means that they're made on the same equipment that could be risky for people with allergies. If I make tofu with peanut butter sauce, wash the pan like crazy, the next dish, if it was to be packaged or served in a restaurant would need to say "may contain traces of peanuts".

I became vegan while I was living in L.A. it is the easiest place in the world to be vegan, there are literally vegan restaurants every few streets in DTLA and West L.A. There's also a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's on every 3rd corner full of vegan candy, vegan make-up and hygiene products, even a extra special Heidi Ho Ne Chevre Black Lava vegan cheese I can't get where I live now even though I'm still in California and shop at a co-op that sells things like Daiya and FYH. Kalel is a privileged piece of shit, people like her make me mad, but Unnatural Vegan makes me even angrier for defending her, when there are vegans who live in Montana who shop at Wal-Mart who do their very best to opt out of animal products every way they can. I think Unnatural Vegan is a terrible human being, though, this is just the 23rd in a series of videos that make me want to feed her to some rescued mountain lions.

So happy for the chill vegan way! Thank you for the honesty. A lot of people hear I am vegan and just wait for me to turn on them and judge them. I usually preface my "I'm vegan" with a "I won't constantly judge you" phrase...

I wasn’t expecting you to make a reply video, but I’m glad you did. I agree with Kalel to an extent (pretty much the same as yours) and everything that you said. I own designer bags, clothes, shoes, skincare, and makeup that I had before I went vegan and I don’t want to get rid of them. Not even that I like those kinds of things, but I don’t like wasting things and it becomes exhausting to check every little thing. I have certain “fuck it” moments pretty much with food (as I’m mainly vegan food-wise, since I’m vegan for health [but I do care about animal welfare to an extent for personal reasons]) when I go out to events that don’t have options for me or when I’m out in a certain location. The farthest I go in those cases is going to be pescatarian. It is very hard for me to go back to any other kind of meat, so when it comes to freegan part I won’t eat poultry, beef, lamb, pork, etc. if it’s going to waste. Again thank you for making this video. August 1st will be 5 years since I became vegetarian, and that’s when I’m going to announce that I am vegan (when I’m been vegan for about a couple of months or so) and what being vegan means to me and I’m proud of where I am in the vegan spectrum. My family and friends are proud and shook that I can not eat cheese (for example) with no issue or anything lol

I've made the transition to veganism around 1 1/2 months ago, but I still have some honey that I bought pre-veganism. I'm still eating it (I don't eat a lot of honey so that's why it's taking so long, I just usually put like a teaspoon in oatmeal to sweeten it) and I will eat it until it runs out. Also, I don't really check to see if wine is vegan or not (because I don't drink that much anyways).
    So I guess I'm a 'fake vegan'.

Wow! I think this was a really fantastic, thought provoking video. I was vegan for about five years total (4 consecutive, then vegetarian for a few years, then omnivorous for a few years, then back to vegan for another year), but unfortunately I am not even close to vegetarian at this point. And I feel horrible about it, but I am still having trouble getting back to vegetarian/vegan. I think you pretty successfully touched on a lot of the reasons why I failed at being a vegan long term. Also, I love the idea of trying to be an “at home vegan” or something similar as a step for making it doable. I’m still not sure what will make it doable for me again right now, but I feel like you have given me a whole new framework for problem solving if I don’t need to overcome all of the obstacles at once.

I'm so glad for your videos as they got me back onto the reductionism train, which I now feel that I can do again as I know my plans for next year, have a job and am now settled into Japan and my apartment (it took me a long time to feel "settled in" here as Japanese apartments come with LITERALLY NOTHING, not even light bulbs and to be able to cook a variety of vegetarian foods I needed spaces, appliances, materials and tools to do so, all of which take a long time to obtain when you don't know about stores here and don't have a car - plus it was my first year in Japan and a very VERY stressful one a that!). If I tried to become a strict vegan in Japan, where I don't speak or read very much of the language and which is not supportive towards vegans and vegetarians (and where very often those words are not even understood) I would honestly be going BONKERS. Heck if you go to a restaurant and order cold tofu you will very often get bonito (fish flakes) on top, many broths you would think should be vegan also have dashi (which has fish)so you never know when animal (especially fish) byproducts are going to be added to things. I also had to find out where to buy reasonably priced dry beans so I had a protien option other than tofu or expensive (compared to the west) and bulky (important when you live in a smal apartment, to save space, also harder to transport without a car) canned beans, plus I had to poke around iherb (which thankfully does ship internationally) to see what other things I might want or need (bought a big ol' container of pea protien). I decided that what was realistic for me was to eat a vegetarian diet when cooking at home but also not stress if certain sauces/stocks had trace amounts of animal products that I don't know about, as I can't read the packaging. Also, because I don't fit ladies shoes in Japan to continue buying leather shoes when at home because I need each pair of shoes to last me AT LEAST a year or two inbetween trips home and my feet are also very weird in terms of finding fitting shoes so if they fit and are high quality I'm going to buy them pretty much no matter what. So yeah, I think it's great that you've made it clear that there should be less all or nothing attitudes, especially as there's literally no way to live and not harm animals at all and it's better to do what we feel we realistically can do at this stage in our life than nothing at all.

I think why kalel was so criticized though was because she was shaming non vegans in the past, like when she sent her fans to attack Ingrid Nilsen for wearing a jacket with some fur around her hood, despite her being in Canada where is freezing (Kalel lives in LA) and probably people are pointing the non vegan stuff Kalel does in return.

She kinda did. While she was doing that video on fur she displayed Ingrid and a couple of other social media personalities on it, while being very condescending to them. Obviously, her fans then gone to these accounts to shame them.

Kalel brings all of this on herself. She's constantly coming for other influencers and celebrities for not being vegan (I.e. Wearing fur, eating meat). She's actually been one of those very preachy vegans over the years, and when she comes for people it's not in a nice way. She also frequently uses non-vegan cosmetics in her videos but never acknowledges it, she frequently wears clothes that are not vegan and doesn't acknowledge it. Over the years she had consistently been preachy and sometimes down right mean to other people who live a different lifestyle than her, but she never has owned up to her mistakes until now. That's why people come for her, and it's usually very few. Most of her current subs adore her. You can't expect to be a jerk towards people and not expect to get that same energy back.

    • @AngelStarHealer
      @AngelStarHealer 6 років тому +1

Yep yep, typical Kalel playing the victim card and using excuses. Too bad she didn't apologised to these people when she did these "I'll expose myself" videos.
