Hi Petra, so happy to see you back on this platform again. I have really missed your videos. So I am from Southern India and coconuts play an extremely important role in our diet and spiritual life as well. Back home, we would just bash the coconut on a stone or even the edges of a step in the back yard to get it open. Now here in the US, it had become really tough to find a way to open them especially around festival days when we have to use fresh coconut. The method you showed is exactly how skilled coconut sellers and farmers used to open them. Will have it to give this method a try with the soaking step. Now if you have some tips to open up the whole coconut with the green husk and all that would be something 😉
Thank you so much! I do remember you from the comments!! I have gotten quite a few requests to show how to open a young coconut, which I am going to do. However, I have never seen a coconut with the green husk still on in the stores (at least here in Canada). It's typically already removed, so it's just the white husk.
@@NutritionRefined aah that’s so sweet. I honestly have not seen the coconuts with the full husk on here in any store as well except in Hawaii. If I ever do get my hands on it, I wanted to learn to open one to get to the tender coconut meat inside. I miss eating that.
My daddy had taught me how to crack a coconut open in the middle just the way you've done it!!! The other method was what I was searching for!! Thank you very much for showing us this easy method!!
In my island, we have a Legend about the coconut. So in the legend, a coconut is the head of an eel that fell in love with a princess. Before it died, it told the princes to cut off its head and bury it near her Palace.. if she does it , a tree will grow and it will be used as means for survival. Anyway, the fruit o f the tree will be for food and drink. So the coconut is liken to the eel's head that was cut out and buried. The three dots are the two eyes and the mouth. It is the mouth that we can open and drink the juice.
If coconut is very matured and dry well with this method you can peel the shell without breaking the coconut white but if the coconut is not very matured it’s difficult to peel that way. I am telling you this because I did coconut business for years.
OMG this is probably one of the best instruction videos out there. We didn’t know how to open the coconuts we bought from the market so I searched for a guide and followed, it worked exactly like you said, it was so cool
WOW! Thank you, sure wish I knew about freezing it so that could have placed it in the freezer last night for my Coconut Curry today! THANK YOU, VERY HELPFUL INFORMATION!
To speed up the draining of the water by 5x, I stick a stwaw through the hole (all the wat to the back wall) and all the liquid drains in one 5th of the time. This is useful if your main objective is to collect coconut water to co sume cold or as a mixer for alcoholic drinks.
Thanks for sharing this video. I tried using a good quality cleaver in the same fashion you used the knife and it cracked it open with a couple of hits . It’s much faster that way and it does not brake the coconut. Very clean cut.
She probably does drain it since both coconut meat steps come after the drainage step and she doesnt mention anything differently. Also if you have frozen coconut water inside the coconut meat it could complicate using the meat afterwards since you wouldnt know where the water is frozen or how much of it there is. It would also make the entire coconut heavier to handle since it would be the weight of the frozen meat plus frozen coconut water. Im not Petra but I do believe that she probably drained the frozen example as well! Cheers.
Thank You 😊 Opening COCONUT 🥥 in my country was very easy. However, it seems to have gotten a bit more venturous. So I am delighted in the info given. Yes the both ways, again thanks 😊
Mature (old) coconuts are (best for cream/milk/yogurt ect..) very high in fat. Young ones will have (soft jelly meat) younger they are they lower fat/softer jelly and more water. However they all vary, most we get here in Australia are 300 - 500ml, but in Indonesia, Thailand, Bali some are 1000 - 1500ml of water per young coconut. Nice video
There is another easy way too. Just peal it well and heat it a bit on the gas stove from all sides (30-60 secs) and then hit on the main shell lines. It will break easily in just 4-5 hits
This video is PERFECT! I recently bought a coconut and this morning my daughter asked if we could open it. I looked up a tutorial and immediately found this video. I did what you said and it worked perfectly. Only thing is we now know my little girl does not like coconuts, lol. Thanks for the tutorial.
Be very careful doing that with a knife; they're not made to endure such impact. Lots of knife accidents also occur through the handle slipping out of the hand, so be very aware of this before attempting this method.
It worked! Was finally able to open this coconut. It did take a few tries. Definitely helps to wet your coconut. Then crack it along its equator. I only had a lightweight cleaver (but wished I had a heftier one). Nevertheless, still worked. Good luck all! Worth it for a delicious treat.
awesome. recently i saw a different video where someone told to heat the already split coconut halfs for 15 minutes in an oven, in order to separate the shell from the meat. but i'd prefer to use the freezing method, because i think it might keep the meat more native than heating it up. But one question: After freezing, can i immediately start to crack it with the knife, or should the coconut be defrosted before?
Thank you. I didn't know that the whole thing comes out cleanly if you freeze a coconut. I'm used to banging on it with a heavy cleaver a few times until it cuts in half.
I already drained it and I was preparing to start hitting it with a hammer, caveman style, and thought "there has to be a better way.." Tried the knife method and it split open with just a few hard taps! Thank you!!
You can open a coconut easily in just a few seconds if you skip laying the coconut in water. Instead just draw a waterline with water on your finger over the coconut’s equator before you hit the equator with a hammer or the dull side of a heavy knife. 🥥🥥🔨🧉🌴 Good luck!
How long do you soak the coconut in water before cracking it open? If I were to freeze the coconut before cracking it open then how long should I freeze it for. I might use your technique so that’s why I’m asking.
@@NutritionRefined when soaking the coconut in water for a couple of minutes that will make it easier to crack it open as you’re hitting it with the back part of the knife right?

Now I want to rush out and buy a coconut and drain it and throw it in the freezer. That is so cool. You do drain it before putting in the freezer? Soak before freezing as well?
