Depending on the day/night and how much I've done...about 4-6 hours of sleep. But I still have lots to do and still can't make it work. I will look into this, 😊 might be a good idea for me to get things done.💖 thank you for sharing.
For the first minute I literally blanked out because I was waiting for the skip ad button but then I realized that the music was the actual background music of the video
I'm already used to it with 4-5hours sleep in daily basis.... 4.30am -wakeup 6.00am -work (12hours) 7.00pm -back to home 8.00pm - etc 12.00pm -sleep Since I'm a part time student still need to work on with assignments/projects in routine from 8-12pm And i still don't enough time to workout in gym...
I work at the sleep laboratory and I consider this dangerous to put it mildly. First, sleep occurs in cycles with duration about 90-120 minutes, where all the sleep stages are (should be) present: NREM 1 - NREM 2 - NREM3+4 - REM. In healthy sleep their proportion in consequent sleep cycles changes: NREM 3+4 are longest in first cycle and then they get shorter, and REM si longest in the last cycle. Both of these types of sleep have significant effects on health, not only REM sleep. Regulation of sleep is also very complex (see Borbély´s model of sleep regulation) because it depends on sleep pressure (i.e. time spent awake before) and circadian rhytmicity, where external and internal stimuli play role (like darkness inducing melatonin secretion). The two factors should be in synchronicity for onset of sleep. One can fall asleep without on of them, but the sleep is of poorer quality. While the video and comments mention that REM sleep will start sooner in naps, it does not mean that its duration will be sufficient. Also, there is no mention of NREM3-4 sleep that is equally important but for other purposes. This sleeping pattern disrupt normal distribution and possibly amount of healthy/physiological sleep phases. Moreover, both short and prolonged sleep deprivation have been proven to have severe health risks, not only in neurocognitive departement but also on cardiovascular. Just one hour less in sleep in spring time shift was shown to be linked with higher incidence of heart attack. And poor sleep quality with lack of NREM3-4 and REM sleep is one of the factors contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The research of effect of poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation on health is overwhelming. And lastly, I think this is to prioritize social and working aspect of life (productivity, creativity) over indidual health. Even saying things like: ancestors did it such and such... isolated tribe does it like this.... overall REM sleep might be still sufficient ...... this and that person tried it and it feel great. It is remarkably like wishful thinking, like wanting to make excuses to your own body. "Sorry, my body, my heart and brain, that project is really important, and I so want to binge watch entire channel I just discovered on youtube, oh, and I always wanted to read that book. You won´t mind a bit less sleep, right? We´ll find some confirmation of its benefits online, I promise" It is not far above making your whims more important than your health and lying about it to oneself.
IMO the only benefit is that it boosts your creativitiy since your brain is still half dreaming while awake but it is dangerous for your health on the long run. Probably the reason why geniuses die young. It also increases chance for depression
Tahnee Thompson Well, there are things that are not concise. Explaining why and how we sleep the way we do as mammals, is 1 of those things. So... Do you even realize how dumb your comment makes you sound right now?
Many people live exactly this way - just not deliberately, but out of necessity - and are healthy and functional. I spent entirety of highschool sleeping 4-6 hours a day, and not in blocks. I felt great, just used to catch up every second weekend by getting a 10hr chunk either Sat or Sun.
Dude yes!! Us gamers and late night UA-cam binge watchers, and last minute homework procrastinators. We've already masterd the 4 and a half hour sleep schedule. I say well done ppl😂😂
Everything you said is absolutely true. I actually sleep 4 hours a night and have more energy and am more productive and alert than compared to a full 8 hour sleep. I also get a 20 min nap during the day and wake before the alarm goes on...... Amazing
When I am sleep-deprived I try to take daytime naps, and I set an alarm for 20 minutes *or less* IN ORDER TO NOT fall into "deep" sleep. Every time I have set it to 25 minutes or more, when I wake up I feel really groggy -- sometimes for hours afterwards. But not after the 10-20 minute naps, which are truly refreshing.
Ludovic, I think you are responding to another comment I posted, not this one. (If I'm wrong, please explain how your response is relevant to my comment above.) You say it is not possible to take 90 minutes to get into REM. I never said it did. I said that, according to Wikipedia, it takes about 70 minutes. Leaving 20 minutes of the sleep cycle for REM. "Plus quick REM is something the body can achieve when sleep deprived." Citation, please? Even if this is true, this sounds like a horrible way to treat your body.
That's why naps are not supposed to b taken in the place where u sleep at night .. bcoz your brain thinks it's a sleeping time... instead always take naps either at the office chair or desk .. this way u r signaling ur brain that its just a 15 min nap ..u have to wake up n do ur work...n dont create a sleeping environment. .keep something u r going to work on after u wake up..like book ..or laptop etc ... u must have noticed that if u sleep at the office desk .. u wake instantly when u realize what's around u... that's d reason u sleep more in bedroom ... nxt u will also feel slight discomfort when u sleep on desk or chair so when ur time is up u will get up immediately to change ur poster n there u go! That's the time u will b more conscious to control ur brain n body I.e. to wake up! ...naps are meant to relax brain n not body .. always keep alarm .. initially u might dismiss ur alarm n sleep again ..but u wont b able to Sleep much bcoz of the same reason (u told ur brain to take nap n not sleep) ..but with time trust me I have tried it u will c change after few days... .never take naps on bed .. or else u will end up sleeping for hrs because ur body is so relaxed that u dont even move an inch so how will u control ur body to wake up?
Yeah I get it, but it's not scientific enough. How was your blood pressure, before and after? How was your testosterone level, before and after? Are you sure about the good LONG-term effects? Are you sure you are living a healthy life or you FEEL you're living healthy? These are two totally different things!
for example im training cycling and I have a physical job but when my muscles are exhausted, short naps do not allow for regeneration. It is then spread over a longer period of time than if I were sleeping more traditionally. Trainings instead of bringing results bring stagnation. Part of it can be helped but some things can not be overcome. There are pros and cons. It's a long topic. ... any way 2 snaps are better for me that lazy one
Maybe it depends on your body type, not everything works the same for every person. If it worked out for him, it might not work out for you, but maybe it will work for you. Who knows?
your body does get used to it, but most people really do need 8 hours of sleep. Even if you feel ok your body does still take the effects of little sleep.
Between the anecdotal evidence, obnoxious music, preachy focus on productivity, and trite advice given at the end, this video has made me more mad than anything on UA-cam has in a while! A+!
I too appreciate a well placed good morning kick in the guts followed by productive anger. This video has helped me sleep less and be more angry at the same time ! This is genuinely positive.
Humans need to work less and live more. Finding a way to sleep less and work more shows that there is something wrong with society a day the way we live today. This guide doesnt show the long term health effects.
Agree sadly companies expect us to work till we drop these days. I was in hospital for two weeks due to an illness can't help it so I was behind schedule on my work (they could have assigned to someone else) when I got back they called me in saying why are you so far behind and I was like I was in hospital i called and emailed you about this. Their response was shocking we pay you to work not to be sick so you will have to make the time up. Lets just say I handed in my notice the same day
Chris Jayes I agree. I work in oil field and it's ridiculous the hours I think in my straight 9 days I worked I had 119 hours not sure how they are able to get away with how they work people but should be ilegal. And they have nerve to have safety meetings each shift u can't fully be safe working hours like that
mmh sleeping for 6-10 hours every night sums up over the years so in general human sleep 1/3 of their life.. if you continue with the sleep schedule he "praised" this will save huge amount of lifetime over years
I'd have never even heard of this but I was naturally resorting to a similar schedule. I mean I could've gotten my 7 hours or what have you and still done it, but I don't wanna turn myself into a machine for two weeks, I need free time.
exactly, your brain adapts but doesn't mean its good, you could be drinking way too little water and your body will eventually try to conserve that water as much as possible making each and every drop more efficiently utilized compared to someone who drinks way too much water
actually we evolved like this. it's not until the 19th-20th centuries that we started sleeping full 8 hours. used to be people sleep 4 hours go do something (even go out for a few hours midnight) and come back for another 3-4 hours. if we go even further back in time before civilization man really never slept long as you had to be alert for predators. so it's actually more normal to sleep short stretches.
zarni000 well in that first case you mentioned, the total amount of sleep is the same, and for the latter, I assure you they’re life expectancy wasn’t nearly as long as ours...
we evolved like that. changing something you have already evolved to do (i.e. you are perfectly fitted to function in) does not benefit you. the opposite. i grant you life expectancy was shorter but for other reasons.
This is not how REM sleep works and the entire video does not have any scientific backup. The only good advice this video gives is: "DO MORE RESEARCH". And also, please don't change your life in order to "get more productive at work"... you don't live in order to go to work...
Yeah, the whole thing came across as "how to become an even more productive sheep". Even the "spend it on stuff that makes you happy and excited" part sounded like doing it for the expectations and "achiever recognition" of other people.
To live in a materialistic existence such as our reality. Work allows us to live the way we want. Of course no one wants to work but how else are you gonna do what you want in this day and age
Don't do it, it makes you more tired. First time you wake up, get up. Jump out of bed. Then, maybe, an hour or two later you can go again. Listen to your body. Don't take caffeine or look at bright screens.
16 hours here! It felt really wonderful and I got no headaches, but I've only done it once. Can't even sleep for 4 hrs now with my thesis hovering over me.
For those have high blood pressure, depression and vestibular disorders like me...do not try this , if you want to live little longer. My systolic blood pressure jumped from 122 to 137 just one night lacks of 3-4 hours sleeping.
Exactly .. I don’t think recommending 4 hours of sleep is smart.. maybe it works for this person and some RARE people but I don’t think it works for most.
This doesn't work if you need to do ANY kind of physical activity more than just sitting in a chair all day. I sometimes find myself awake for 36 hours at a time if I have a bit too much coffee or if I stay awake past the time I would normally go to sleep and then I become less sleepy again. But I always have to pay for it afterward with a 12 hour sleep or so to catch up.
iforce2d My husband is in the Army. He runs around 5k a day. He also does PT five days a week with his battalion and another hour or two on his own a week. He typically works 14 hours a day, sitting down around ten minutes an hour. He's vegan, though I'm not sure it matters. He's almost 40. He is healthier than 99% of the kids half his age. He sleeps six hours a night.
there is a huge different between 4 and 6 hours. 6h of sleep can be the natural thing to do for some people, while 4h always requires an adaptationand terapy.
Katie Neves yep, like the other guy said, 6 hours is actually fairly normal. In fact, the whole 8 hours of sleep is a myth, it's actually closer to 6 or 7. And also the amount of sleep you needs gets less the older you get.
I can do well with just 4 hours of sleep. I run well on little sleep. And if I continue to do it in a row, I feel tired the first night and once I get past the rough part of the night and just push through it, I feel more awake and then get a really deep 4 hours(I will wake up naturally with no alarm), and be fine for the day and then I dont feel as tired that next night coz I gotten used to it. But I also love to sleep, so even tho I may wake up and feel fine, the bed is so comfy and I go back to sleep(coz I hate mornings anyway). and then WAY oversleep. But then it starts over my sleep schedule back to a normal 6-7 hours. 4 hours tho. Pretty easy if I end up doing it. I get more inspired at night, so even if I get tired my inspirations give me energy to do it, and my body adjusts to it.
Sleep researcher here. There is no research supporting this at all (if you find any, I would be delighted to see it). There is a lot of research supporting the destructive effects of not sleeping enough, though. Use at your own risk.
not to mention that "physical activity" as mentioned in the video is better, id love to see that since muscles grow and repair during sleep and according to my trainer (who sleeps around 4-6 hours and feels fit) 8 hours should be minimum if you want to build physique
Philippe Stenstrom thanks! I would also say that he did not once mention the sun, which clearly regulates sleep for all animals for good evolutionary reason. Can't just ignore that
I've been involuntary sleeping like this for years, due to stress, and only falling asleep due to exhaustion. oftentimes I can't nap until I'm so tired that I crash. I'm not productive and struggle completing tasks all the time. Living like this feels, well, nothing good.
TIMESTAMPS Where did the idea come from? 0:50 Day 1 2:48 Day 2 3:20 Day 3 3:46 Day 4 4:15 Day 5 4:55 Days 6-7 5:41 Days 8-10 6:20 Days 11-14 6:55 Pros of polyphasic sleep 7:30 Cons of polyphasic sleep 8:46 My thoughts after the experiment 9:48
I've been doing this since my early twenties. Every time I hear someone go "I wish there were more hours in the day" and I try to explain there are generally enough hours, I often end up getting some variation of "yea but that takes work"...
I did this for 2 years while working graveyard and going to school. Its not worth it, to do it just for the sake of doing it. You gain weight (I was going to boxing classes at the time too) if you're not extremely careful. You become cranky and angry with everyone. I personally began feeling chest pain and started to lose my hair. I feel like I aged rapidly compared to my peers. I switched to afternoon shift last year and its the best decision I ever made. I sleep at least 6 hours every night now and I feel like a brand new person. Experiments are cool, but sleep is better.
I have a male friend who slept like that since his teen days. Now that he has hit 30, whenever people see him, they thought he is at least 45! Premature aging, bad skin, weight gain (fatty liver).....you name it, he has it. It's definitely not worth trading 3-4 hours of sleep for premature aging which cannot be reverted.
College is nothing but a waste of time, I wasted so much time in there, wish I could reverse time :( if your going for something big then good luck but for the others, it's a complete waste of life
@@tr-3b39 it depends in a lot of factors, here in Brazil you can't get decent money without going to college or doing a technical course (I don't really know how you call it), Im doing psychology next year and yes im scared to not find a job after but oh well thats life
I've slept ~5 hours every night for about 12 years now. I usually aim for 5.5 hours, but most often it's around 5. I don't take naps or anything, because it just makes me feel tired. I've tried sleeping more in the weekends, but I usually wake up without alarm clocks after ~6 hours of sleep and if i ever sleep more than 6.5 hours, i'm just extremely tired and don't feel like doing anything at all. Usually I also get sleep paralysis for oversleeping. I'm rarely sick. I'm sick like once every 2 years or something. It's all about what you're used to. Sleeping isn't the same for everyone and how much you sleep doesn't matter. The time you're awake matters. What's your productivity. There's no point in trying to lower your sleep amount to 5 hours if you'll just stare at a wall like a zombie for 15 hours of the day or if you waste those extra hours watching 4 more episodes of your favorite TV show. Do it only if you NEED those extra hours for something like exercising or work or studying (But remember that you shouldn't be tired when studying or working if you want to learn something since it affects your brains).
Xxsportyme 3 not really iam the same as him/her, I only sleep 4-5 hours a day since I was young, iam middle age now and it hasn't done anything bad to me iam perfectly healthy not over/under weight and I rarely got sick etc, actually if I sleep for more than that I get grumpy my head hurts and I feel sick like some thing isn't right..
Ummm, i want to add to this, when you sleep less and you want to be fully rested, you need to be consistent on when you sleep. For instance, sleep 1am and wake up a 5am everyday, dont change that at all... and find a time to take a nap somewhere during the day. maybe after work or before work, depending on your schedule, like 11am- 11:30 only everyday:30 only everyday. This is where you start to see the results in improving after a week or 2. You can't have like same amount of sleep but always changing when you sleep, it will never work, ever.
Great video! Between work and being a full-time student, I literally get 4 hours of sleep every night. It was very hard for me to adjust to this schedule, but staying hydrated and changing my diet made me feel better health-wise.
I’m on my second week of polyphasic sleep now. The only day that was difficult was day three. My schedule is 5 hours per 24 hour cycle. I feel slightly more energetic than prior, other than that, not much difference internally. I do get a lot more accomplished.
I've experienced this before for 3 weeks, it was generally to have more time to study for my exams without messing up my spare time. 2-4 hours of sleep at night and one 25-55 minutes nap in daytime. It was good actually for me since I prefer to study at night but it was super tiring throughout the day. Great tip to add more hours to your day, although it wasn't so great for my appearance but I wouldn't recommend to make it as a habit.
erfansvideos this isn't just about work. Its about being awake. You sleep less you get more time to do fun things like games family and friends not just work
James Without your health (sleep) there’s nothing you can contribute to your family, friends and even “game” time.. you become an absent zombie. Don’t sacrifice your sleep, prioritize your time.
+Erfansvideos as a person that follows this sleep pattern I can tell you that sleeping for more than 4 hours a day (ESPECIALLY in one long chunk) is overkill and can actually lead to being more tired and needing to use things like coffee and soda. I get a total of 2-3 hours of sleep a day and since I changed i've lost weight, got fit, my mental state improved, my work has gotten better, and overall I have noticed no drawbacks other than social norms.
Sara Pinto depends on the person really. I function absolutly fine off 4 hours and have no problem driving. Though there are others who might not fair as well
I've been working 3rd for the past month with only 4hrs of sleep without any naps. The first week I felt like a zombie and would space out, I now feel relatively fine and awake. I guess it really just depends on the person but at first for anyone cutting their sleep drastically i'd definitely agree. Until your body gets used to it, you're chances of hurting yourself or others goes through the roof.
RenegadeGaming yeah but as you said you would space out the first week, so I hope yoj didn't drive to work or worst that you are not a bus driver or something like that !
RenegadeGaming right. I remember my first day of school I did thrid shift and only got 3 hours of sleep, and felt I was barely functioning. After getting 3-4 hours of sleep though for a few months as the semester progressed, I actually felt perfectly normal off of 3 hours. Even days where I didn't have work or school and I could sleep in, I would naturally only sleep for like 5 or 6 hours. Your body just adapts really.
That's the whole/main purpose of videos like this, generated by corporations fearing we all turn into attention disorder freaks who cannot sustain our average productivity as we used to do before our lives got invaded by the now ever present technologic stimuli. Wake up, people! We are not born to be productive but to be happy while producing, if we like producing anything at all for that matter...
Well said. Notice how he talked about going to bed at 1:30am, giving him time to watch documentaries and read, but then he "had" to say no to spending time with friends?! How does that make any sense? Doesn't sound like the right way to live!
Been sleeping 2-4 hours a day with no naps for 2 years and I still feel energized throughout the day and I don’t have bags under my eyes or have skin problems 😊 When I have gotten 8 hours of sleep I feel like I wasted half my day .
Look I've never had a dream in all my life, because a dream is what you want to do but still haven't pursued, I knew what i wanted and did it till it was done so I've lived that dream I wanted sense day one.
The rapid eye movement (REM) - phase IS NOT the most crucial stage of sleep and no, you DO NOT rest during it or recharge or whatever, however, it is still really important. The most important phase during the night is the deep sleep phase where brain activity reduces drastically, effectively resting. This phase occurs even before the first REM-phase and deep sleep phases become weaker and shorter as sleep goes on. The REM-phase on the other hand is the phase where a person is almost awake. Scientists used to think that this is the only phase we are dreaming in but it isn't. Dreams serve to handle things we experience during the day as well as problem solving, dealing with issues etc. The first REM-phase occurs about 1:30 hr into your sleep and lasts longer the more often you enter it. Without it, humans are easily irritable and in a bad mood. Don't be fooled. Get your sleep. I don't think you have done your research properly. Well I learned this stuff so.
Fisolino u are clearly missing the fact that your body will fall in a deep sleep way faster. Meaning that u would skip the earlier phases or just grt into REM multiple.times faster. Compare it to when u habent slept for 24hrs and u lie on the bed only to fall asleep in 2min.
Victor Perez The people he mentioned were freaks of nature, people with minds that work way different to your average person, probably didn’t choose to sleep less, just something that happened, sleeping less won’t make you a genius, and geniuses don’t all sleep less... and most probably had normal sleep, lots of rumours go around about these people
I sleep 5 hours every day and I wake up feeling healthy and energetic. Not all bodies are the same, see millions of people can’t follow my sleep schedule and millions can. We’re all different and as a plus, I have insomnia and I have my entire life. I’m one to not be bothered by it. It doesn’t disturb my day. I get the amount of sleep I want at night.
I've been sleeping 4 hrs a day for 42 yrs. I do fine with it. After reading Mr Sandovals post I had to do this adddendum. I'm 67 I still have all of my hair all of it down past my shoulders still lt brown very little white. I work out 4x a week and walk 2 mi a day. 3 of those days I strap on a 40# back pack. Live healthy and exercise my friends. I dont drink alcohol but enjoy a joint every once in awhile. I was in my 30's had to take an IQ test and an MMPI test for some funding. Slept my normal 4 hrs smoked a few tokes before leaving the house. Scored 147 on test. Just saying we're all different. What works for me or a million others may not work for you. Body chemistry psycological make and a thousand other variables are what makes us unique. This to me keeps life interesting.
so basically you have superpowers you sound like my grandpa who’s badass i wish i could only sleep four hours a day and do fine, i sleep four hours a day cause yknow, highschool i guess
123mambo321 some people can handle it honestly. it’s pretty unbelievable. my grandpa is 70 and he still does marathons, smokes, eats a slice of pie every night and gets up at 6 in the morning. he has a memory better than me. i don’t understand it.
I used to sleep like that but as soon as you start sleeping 8 hours a day, you'll find out that there really is a big difference, I mean for sure you can stay alive and do your work with 4 hours of sleep but the quality is not comparable
I sleep 12am - 5am Exercise- 20min My backlog studies- 5:30am-7:30am School - 8am-3pm (I usually bunk English & P.E. class cause I have to study the remaining part of the backlog studies 😌) 3pm-4pm - Nap (yaa i call it nap 😅 I take it while going to tution in the car) 4 pm - 7pm - tution classes (for my important exam) 7 pm - 8pm - Nap/ stress relief meditation (again 😂 in car) I'm not a meditation lover okkaaayyy 😚 8 pm - 12am - Revision of what I have learned in tution 🤧) It's okay for me btw I sleep 7 hours in total 😚😚😚😚
Thank you, brother. I am wishing to begin this. When that guy in the video said, "If you cant keep up with your to-do list, this is for you", it hit me very hard. I am so doing this! Nice schedule you have.
I see arguements in favor and arguements against it but in reality the only thing you should be listening to is YOUR OWN BODY. I cannot stress this enough. Everyones body is different due to lifestyle choices so everyone will sleep differently. Get as much rest as YOUR body feels you need as it is intended in nature. Do what makes you feel good, no one can tell you about your own body but you.
slept less than 4 hours and started seeing hallucinations.. my friend slept less than 4 hours a day for years then later on while driving he just lost consciouness then doctor said his brainwaves are irregular then he had to rest for a year. God made us to sleep and rest so our brain and body heals itself.... your choice to rest or not.
But sometimes you can´t read the signals of your body. I would reccomend seeing a doctor so he can help you understand your body if you want to try something like sleeping 2 hours a day
You should first learn how to manage your time more effectively and efficiently then and only then you should think about getting less sleep. (It’s not right to want more of something if you are not using what you already have properly)
"Efficiently" heavily depends on the person though. A friend of mine does great when studying for 4-5 hours in a row, I myself need breaks for it. So there's difference in our personal efficiency
Could be easy for you to say not knowing how some people are actually busy most of the day and might need MORE hours to either have free time or fit more work in. Your situation obviously doesn't aplly to everyone. No critical thinking required
I’ve been practicing this without even knowing this was a thing, I just looked up if it was ok for me to sleep less. I’ve been working to jobs so this makes me feel much better. Great video
Perfectly sums up this video and also what is wrong in our society in general. I think it's called Urban Achiever Recognition Syndrome (=basically, turning into a sheep, or sometimes, robot).
Yeah, I've been tinkering with my sleep schedule for over a year now and it's not this freaking easy. Sleeping 3-4 hours a day for several in a row and going upwards of 48 hours without sleep still doesn't happen without some conscious struggle. If I'm severely sleep deprived I often function normally up until I get bored or lose focus and when that happens I can fall asleep in seconds.
Y'all, your brain does a lot of maintenance work when you sleep, like clearing out dead tissue. Don't do this. There's a lot of research linking a lack of sleep and Alzheimer's, later in life. Your body also uses sleep for its recovery processes.
Sleeping really helps you a lot in life but if you don’t get enough sleep then your brain gets more tired witch is not good you should be able to get a most sleep as possible just don’t over sleep
I accidentally did this while away at college. Sleeping a few hours a night. Nap after class, and after tennis practice. I just remember ALWAYS feeling tired.
I sleep 4 to 5 hours a day. However, it catches up with me. So I have to "crash" (sleep about 10 hours on one of my rare days off ) about once per month.
Same on the weekends I usually fall asleep at 8-9 and sleep until 10-11... ha 13 hours isn’t good especially since I feel tired sleeping longer as well
Same here. I always sleep for about 3-4 hours a day. (mostly 4) Every 2 months or so I have one or two days where I'm really tired and sleep for about 10-12 hours straight. Downside to this sleeping pattern is that I'm in a really deep sleep and people cannot wake me up. I literally have to set an alarm clock on my computer and have it blast through my room to wake me up lol.
Omar Abdul-Malik DHEd, MPAS, PA-C I do the same thing...except I'll sleep like 12 hrs straight on a day off, every other weekend. I work hard crash hard.
REM adjusts. The less sleep you get, the sooner REM kicks in during your sleep periods. I can take a 30 minute nap and have a 3 day long dream, complete with a huge cast of characters and decent plot. T. Edison worked 24/7/365. He would fall asleep at his work bench for 5-10 minutes a few times a day, and that's all the sleep he ever got. He lived to 84 at a time when life expectancy for a male was like 62.
Lelouch Yagami, How is it going for you? Do you actually feel relaxed and rejuvenated? Or do you feel you need more sleep? I'm thinking of trying it but worried it might destroy my whole sleep schedule altogether, which is 9 hours of sleep a day.
I Can Do It Non-Stop. Depending How Physically Active I Get I End Up Needing A Day To Crash And Sleep 10 Hours Though. Usually Pretty Peppy In The Morning. Only Down Side Is That Long Days Seem Really Long.
I can't say I feel perfect but I don't feel much of a difference from sleeping 12 hours or 2 hours. It's like my body doesn't care about how much sleep I get as long as its not 0. Sometimes my 12 hour weekend naps make me feel more lazy and inactive. It'll definitely destroy your sleep schedule but thats the entire point of it. Bonus perk: You never get jet lag because your body doesn't care about night or day
I always felt guilty for going to bed late (midnight) and then waking at 4:30 am. I would rattle around thinking about stuff, get up, drink some coffee and then guiltily sneak a nap (20mins) around 9:00. I thought maybe I was getting some sort of syndrome. But it seems that it is ok to do that. I don't drink, and I eat a very spartan diet. I get a lot of work done too.
As an insomniac , I find it hard to relate to how hard it was for this guy to sleep 4 hrs. I hated not sleeping when I was younger but I grew into it growing up . People complaining of lack of sleep always annoys me but I don’t say anything . Just how I am
To be honest, I used to sleep in this way, but it just reduced my productivity. I was having a hard time concentrating during the daytime! I don't suggest anybody try this. It's better to spend 6-7 hours at night.
I do this all the time and im still very productive but im still young. As a 16 year old it might be easier. Mayby as you get older its harder but for me its pretty easy.
Everyone has the shadow in the corner of there room turn into a witch that sits on there chest and chokes them while they cant move or scream??? oh... I guess I'm normal after all : )
I know a guy that used to do that when I met him ( maybe he still does but he lives in another country so I don`t see him often lol ) he would just take a few 20 minutes nap here and there... and he usually had more energy than most... I didn`t there was a word for that before seeing this though
I sleep only 2 hours in 24 hours. I do workout minimum 3 hours a day. I feel active and my brain is awake all the time. Its been 3 years as if now I have no health issues.
I dont sleep at All - 0 hours for the last 20 years! I Also dont eat or drink, only sungazing for me. It has soo many advantages like mind reading and levetation. Zero cons! Try it
This is very dangerous for some people and great for a select few. This video portrays some scientific theories as truths and makes it untrustworthy. BTW Winston Churchill suffered from debilitating depression his whole life, a condition PROVEN to be associated with lack of sleep. Odd how he was chosen as a name drop in this video.
Associated and the primary cause of are two very different things. I realise that replying to ignorance will only beget more comments of the same or lesser caliber but I need to call one out every now and again. Here, maybe this it's more your level... REALLY? so depression is only caused by one single occurrence in a person's entire life experience?
For me, it seems that the more I sleep the more tired I am. 5-6 hours a night is the ideal number, with an occasional 20 mins nap in the afternoon if I feel tired. If I sleep 7-10 I feel like a zombie and all I want to do during the day is sleep more, and that's ignoring the horrible headache I get when I sleep 10 hours. To be honest, I feel even more awake with 3-4 hours of sleep, but I've found that's unsustainable for long periods, so once or twice a week I can sleep 3-4 hours, the rest of the week I "sleep in" and get 5-6 hours.
Hey guys! How many hours of sleep do you need?

Thanks for sharing. Very informative.
ziraniko For someone who works in a laboratory and has to dumb stuff down for people all the time you sure don't know how to be concise.

Voice for the fearful. Hey man, sleep is a beautiful thing. That's all what I have to say
Everything you said is absolutely true. I actually sleep 4 hours a night and have more energy and am more productive and alert than compared to a full 8 hour sleep. I also get a 20 min nap during the day and wake before the alarm goes on...... Amazing
@Sharlz m1 4 hours every night?
@@kirank287 No, 2-4 hours every night. And 20-minute naps throughout the day.
@Riku!! it’s actually due to the cortisol output. The stress hormone provides you with more energy in cost of your cardiac system and much more

REM lasts "exactly 20 to 30 minutes"?
I don't think the word "exactly" means what you think it means.
ssppeellll haha
Lol
When I am sleep-deprived I try to take daytime naps, and I set an alarm for 20 minutes *or less* IN ORDER TO NOT fall into "deep" sleep. Every time I have set it to 25 minutes or more, when I wake up I feel really groggy -- sometimes for hours afterwards. But not after the 10-20 minute naps, which are truly refreshing.
Not to mention that REM takes about 90 minutes to get into.
Ludovic, I think you are responding to another comment I posted, not this one. (If I'm wrong, please explain how your response is relevant to my comment above.)
You say it is not possible to take 90 minutes to get into REM. I never said it did. I said that, according to Wikipedia, it takes about 70 minutes. Leaving 20 minutes of the sleep cycle for REM.
"Plus quick REM is something the body can achieve when sleep deprived."
Citation, please? Even if this is true, this sounds like a horrible way to treat your body.
I've been trying my own experiment for the last 14 years, sleeping 12-14 hours a day.

me when i try to nap for 30-45 minutes : * wake up 3 hours later*

Agreed.
Polyphasic sleep only works for a short period of your life
If you continue to sleep less than 3 hours a day your gonna get issues really fast
Yeah and oh are you a bat or something or are you a non-nocturnal human being!
Even though some of the most productive people in history have done this for years...
for example im training cycling and I have a physical job but when my muscles are exhausted, short naps do not allow for regeneration. It is then spread over a longer period of time than if I were sleeping more traditionally. Trainings instead of bringing results bring stagnation. Part of it can be helped but some things can not be overcome. There are pros and cons. It's a long topic. ... any way 2 snaps are better for me that lazy one

And they have nerve to have safety meetings each shift u can't fully be safe working hours like that
Chris Jayes ..
Chris Jayes You are SO right !
So much Marxism in here
Maybe by working on overcoming your tendencies for procrastination, you could improve your productivity by developing time management skills?
mmh sleeping for 6-10 hours every night sums up over the years so in general human sleep 1/3 of their life.. if you continue with the sleep schedule he "praised" this will save huge amount of lifetime over years
TerrorbladeTM if you dont die earlier
yeah, but bro 4 hour is way less sleep according to sleep scientists
naturally mastered this during final weeks
So much sleep during final weeks would be heaven, its more like 1 hour a day 😂
I'd have never even heard of this but I was naturally resorting to a similar schedule. I mean I could've gotten my 7 hours or what have you and still done it, but I don't wanna turn myself into a machine for two weeks, I need free time.
Alexander S yesssss exactly...now that i just done my finals i need rest x_x
Am I the only one here who slept at 12 and woke up at 4 and then trying to know that this much sleep is sufficient or not😂

I was supposed to nap in the afternoon and woke up at 3am.
Me too
Nah, I went to sleep at 4 and woke up at 7 and need to know if I can pretend that's normal. XD
I sleep at 1:00
The body can adapt to anything, it goes into survival mode but doest mean that 4 hours is healthy. Just saying
exactly, your brain adapts but doesn't mean its good, you could be drinking way too little water and your body will eventually try to conserve that water as much as possible making each and every drop more efficiently utilized compared to someone who drinks way too much water
actually we evolved like this. it's not until the 19th-20th centuries that we started sleeping full 8 hours. used to be people sleep 4 hours go do something (even go out for a few hours midnight) and come back for another 3-4 hours. if we go even further back in time before civilization man really never slept long as you had to be alert for predators. so it's actually more normal to sleep short stretches.
zarni000 well in that first case you mentioned, the total amount of sleep is the same, and for the latter, I assure you they’re life expectancy wasn’t nearly as long as ours...
we evolved like that. changing something you have already evolved to do (i.e. you are perfectly fitted to function in) does not benefit you. the opposite.
i grant you life expectancy was shorter but for other reasons.
I can't adapt to that at all, I'll eventually pass out somewhere, maybe even in the car and cause a massive accident.
This is not how REM sleep works and the entire video does not have any scientific backup. The only good advice this video gives is: "DO MORE RESEARCH".
And also, please don't change your life in order to "get more productive at work"... you don't live in order to go to work...
thank you
Yeah, the whole thing came across as "how to become an even more productive sheep". Even the "spend it on stuff that makes you happy and excited" part sounded like doing it for the expectations and "achiever recognition" of other people.
To live in a materialistic existence such as our reality.

Michael Kantorski Actually it's not a myth it's an average, it's not the same for everyone and the deviation is higher than most would expect.

Thats what i heard you need at least 8 hours for healthy life
What about this tribe the video mentions? Is there no research about the people who live there?
not to mention that "physical activity" as mentioned in the video is better, id love to see that since muscles grow and repair during sleep and according to my trainer (who sleeps around 4-6 hours and feels fit) 8 hours should be minimum if you want to build physique

I am in 1st week, but it is increasing the quantity of energy in my body too much , don't know wut to do?
Somebody help 4th day, I am so disappointed.
I've been doing this since my early twenties. Every time I hear someone go "I wish there were more hours in the day" and I try to explain there are generally enough hours, I often end up getting some variation of "yea but that takes work"...
If I sleep 4 hours a day, will I turn into a cartoon character too?

Polyphasic? More like aphasic you mean...

YES!
I don't think so. There's a difference between waking up naturally and waking up from a screaming life form.
:)
LOL! Will need lots of botox to the point that one looks like a Moai statue.
I also have chest pain if i sleep less.. i feel like my heart is getting weaker. So I couldn't do it
I started having heart problems too.
I get around 4 hours of sleep daily. Life of a college student.
You're not alone!!!

Man, college tbh sounds useless but it could help you tons.
I've slept 5 hours every night for a couple months... I don't really think it's a good thing though..
Ash Ketchum you should see a doctor
Xxsportyme 3 not really iam the same as him/her, I only sleep 4-5 hours a day since I was young, iam middle age now and it hasn't done anything bad to me iam perfectly healthy not over/under weight and I rarely got sick etc, actually if I sleep for more than that I get grumpy my head hurts and I feel sick like some thing isn't right..
ekulerudamuru It is true that some people need less sleep, so you are likely one of those then.
I swear the brightsides a robot this dude never talks like a normal person in all his videos
Stephen Lawrence Because AI took over him and wants to enslave all of us.
I’m on my second week of polyphasic sleep now. The only day that was difficult was day three. My schedule is 5 hours per 24 hour cycle. I feel slightly more energetic than prior, other than that, not much difference internally. I do get a lot more accomplished.
Hey, how is it going? Is you schedule similar to Everyman 2 with 4.5 core and 2 20-minute naps, or is it something else?
how did it go after the time you commented?

How's it going?
You died of sleep deprivation?

How was he talking then?

Yoon Min like a pharmaceutical shill.
I think im gonna do this , and wha about coffe did you like drink a lot ??
This video has the same feel of an anti-depressant commercial. Life is not meant to be a giant to-do list. Think I’ll pass.
erfansvideos this isn't just about work. Its about being awake. You sleep less you get more time to do fun things like games family and friends not just work
Capitalists live this - it's their wet dream. An excuse for longer workdays.
James Without your health (sleep) there’s nothing you can contribute to your family, friends and even “game” time.. you become an absent zombie. Don’t sacrifice your sleep, prioritize your time.
I think it's about having more time to do things like read, paint, hike, meditate, and focus on your own personal growth.
I realized if I got 8 hours or more I still wake up sleepy af if I sleep like 5 6 hours I'm more energetic
same
Me too, most the time at the 6 hour mark I wake up like every 20 mins and I get lethargic
It's because you don't enter deep sleep
Same with mee
Yeah, physically tired and mentally active.

Kevin lol you sit down for two seconds next thing you know... You're 5 hours into watching a centipede fighting a turtle.
Can we talk about the fact that of anyone tries this that person becomes a public danger if they drive to work ?
Your body just adapts really.
if your life is just a series of to do list you can't seem to keep up with you need to change life not become more productive
underrated statement
That's the whole/main purpose of videos like this, generated by corporations fearing we all turn into attention disorder freaks who cannot sustain our average productivity as we used to do before our lives got invaded by the now ever present technologic stimuli. Wake up, people! We are not born to be productive but to be happy while producing, if we like producing anything at all for that matter...
Well said. Notice how he talked about going to bed at 1:30am, giving him time to watch documentaries and read, but then he "had" to say no to spending time with friends?! How does that make any sense? Doesn't sound like the right way to live!
how tho? i can't just stop doing homework and learning for tests!
Exactly
Been sleeping 2-4 hours a day with no naps for 2 years and I still feel energized throughout the day and I don’t have bags under my eyes or have skin problems 😊
When I have gotten 8 hours of sleep I feel like I wasted half my day .
That's hard to believe but if its true you should definitely make a vlog about it so people can learn from you

Fisolino I'm not saying you're wrong, but how you attest to some of famous people he mentioned. Are they just abnormal?
Victor Perez The people he mentioned were freaks of nature, people with minds that work way different to your average person, probably didn’t choose to sleep less, just something that happened, sleeping less won’t make you a genius, and geniuses don’t all sleep less... and most probably had normal sleep, lots of rumours go around about these people
Fisolino I'm trying to stay serious. But I can't stop looking at your snk profile ;-;
this is the dark side of bright side...
What’s his name?
Yeah, sleep is too important

So ur basically hippie which work outs
I seriously doubt this is true,

i wish i could only sleep four hours a day and do fine, i sleep four hours a day cause yknow, highschool i guess

I used to sleep like that but as soon as you start sleeping 8 hours a day, you'll find out that there really is a big difference, I mean for sure you can stay alive and do your work with 4 hours of sleep but the quality is not comparable
I’ve tried both and honestly with 8hrs or more I just felt happier. My brain chemistry felt balanced. Felt fully charged to go about my day.
Welp good for y'all I only get 5rs sleep Monday thru Friday
Btw I'm 16 years old so I can't even think straight half the time

@@omkarbhale442 ,Awwwww 😋😋
Thank youuuuuuu 😊❤
That important exam is JEE!
I would reccomend seeing a doctor so he can help you understand your body if you want to try something like sleeping 2 hours a day
This video makes me sleepy
You should first learn how to manage your time more effectively and efficiently then and only then you should think about getting less sleep. (It’s not right to want more of something if you are not using what you already have properly)
Wants police?
I like that - getting more of what you're already not using properly, isn't going to solve your problem.
No critical thinking required
chinese says you have time to sleep when you die.. so don't waste time sleeping ...
I’ve been practicing this without even knowing this was a thing, I just looked up if it was ok for me to sleep less. I’ve been working to jobs so this makes me feel much better. Great video

Your body also uses sleep for its recovery processes.
try having insomnia where you wish you could sleep at least 4 hours...not fun..

Sleeping really helps you a lot in life but if you don’t get enough sleep then your brain gets more tired witch is not good you should be able to get a most sleep as possible just don’t over sleep
Same
I accidentally did this while away at college.
Omar Abdul-Malik DHEd, MPAS, PA-C
Same here
Same on the weekends I usually fall asleep at 8-9 and sleep until 10-11... ha 13 hours isn’t good especially since I feel tired sleeping longer as well
youd probably be much better off trying for 6 hours a day.
I love that. "Sleeping is for the weak" Now that's brave.
Brave or...Foolish.
so waking is for the brave only?
immortals need sleep, bruh
Wish there had been actual scientific research linked with this video
Christopher Johnston Yeah. But someone would complain that it's all biased anyway. It's not hard to research though, so feel free to have a look.
If this sleep pattern makes you feel better, then what more proof do you need?
REM adjusts. The less sleep you get, the sooner REM kicks in during your sleep periods. I can take a 30 minute nap and have a 3 day long dream, complete with a huge cast of characters and decent plot.
T. Edison worked 24/7/365. He would fall asleep at his work bench for 5-10 minutes a few times a day, and that's all the sleep he ever got. He lived to 84 at a time when life expectancy for a male was like 62.
Yeah gurus use this pattern of sleep #sadghuru
No. Just no.
Just thinking about it makes me want to sleep.
😂😂😂experiment your thinking
Didn't even know this was a thing. It's basically my normal sleep schedule
I get a lot of work done too.
this is me
As an insomniac , I find it hard to relate to how hard it was for this guy to sleep 4 hrs.
You're absolutely right,we can't be productive if we just sleep for 4 hours a day.lol
6 hours is must for refreshing/recharging our minds.
Everyone is different and it won’t work the same on everyone; Just like dieting.
Very true
I do this all the time and im still very productive but im still young. As a 16 year old it might be easier. Mayby as you get older its harder but for me its pretty easy.

That witch you talk about is a Night Hag.

My mother told me not to believe everything the internet says.... Now I know what she meant by that.
Mike Luis Don't believe anything. Or at least question everything and make up your own mind about whatever you see or hear. Wise mother 👍😁
I know a guy that used to do that when I met him ( maybe he still does but he lives in another country so I don`t see him often lol ) he would just take a few 20 minutes nap here and there... and he usually had more energy than most... I didn`t there was a word for that before seeing this though

But polyphasic sleep really is a thing. I just don't know if you'll die sooner of that or not.

Chris genever your comment should be on top !!!
Its pretty standard for a lot of overnight truck drivers and mining/fishing workers, unfortunately.
So... I need more sleep?
Associated and the primary cause of are two very different things. I realise that replying to ignorance will only beget more comments of the same or lesser caliber but I need to call one out every now and again.
Here, maybe this it's more your level...
REALLY? so depression is only caused by one single occurrence in a person's entire life experience?
And I wrote "his whole life". I'm somewhat certain he wasn't fighting ww2 his whole life...
I slept 5 hours last night and now feel like a zombie during the day.
5 hours and that's zombie? hmm, must be weak.
Seriously? How much sleep do you need?
Everyone needs a different amount of sleep. If you feel it is not enough try taking 30 min naps during the day.
Really? I slept 7-10 hours a day and still feeling like a zombie
You sound tired, you should get some decent sleep
