Solo Hiking Mt. Audubon & Paiute Peak // Colorado13ers

- This video show cases my favorite hike after my first summer living in Boulder Colorado. I have done five 14ers and many other hikes and climbs yet this one seemed to have it all while feeling less crowded. This hike consists of two beautiful 13,000ft peaks, a looping trail, a beautiful ridge scramble, and 3 alpine lakes.
Mount Audubon (13,229ft) and Paiute Peak (13,088ft) are located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area and I accessed this trial from the Brainard lake parking area yet the Mitchell Lake trailhead is the closest option if you can snag a permit. This area requires a parking permit to enter and these are opened up 2 weeks prior and have 3 hour time slots one needs to arrive during.
This trail clocked in at 12 miles and 3500ft and should take 5-6 hours. See alltrails for more info on this route:

Absolutely stunning and very beautiful sceneries. This kind of adventures I really like.
Thanks for watching
One of my fav too. Lots of scrambling options in Indian Peaks
Jake - Loved this video. Thanks for posting. I’ve hiked some smaller areas around 7k feet. Any tips for preparing for Audubon at 13k?
Thanks for watching and the kind words.
For hiking at elevation expect to climb slower and in terms of preparing the best method I have found is below. Back when I was living at sea level I often climbed 14,000ft without any acclimation following this general advice.
1. Having a strong cardio base which will help with your efficiency when hiking. Zone 2 training is perfect for building this base.
2. Doing workouts or activities that are close to max effort and help your V02 max. This training at higher heart rates really helps adaptation to higher in elevations. This can be done in many ways from HITT style workouts to biking/running uphill in shorter duration high intensity sessions (~4min).
I hope this helps! For higher mountains being fitter ahead of time always helps and makes the climbs more enjoyable in my opinion but some good ol' mental toughness and taking ones time during the climb can also go a long way.
Best of luck wit this summers hiking goals
Hi Jake! What time of the year is this?
I have tried to get better about putting the dates into recent videos but this hike was done on August 20th
