Stephen King filled up with tears when he saw the end of this film. He even said he preferred the movie ending to his book. The biggest compliment you can get from the original author. And King isn't shy about criticizing adaptions of his book. He hated The Shining, even though it's legendary, he didn't think it was a good adaption of his work. To be honest, I loved both the book and the film. Also, I loved both this movie and The Body (the title of the book this film is based on).
Pretty sure he may have said the same thing about the mist! That ending still hits today lol

This story was in the same collection as the short story that became The Shawshank Redemption. Stephen King is a great storyteller.
@@Tonyblack261 Yes, Stephen King is obviously a great storyteller, but he is well-known for missing the mark on his endings, which is why so many are changed in adaptations.

My son and his three pals were just like this when they were twelve. Inseparable. When my son and one of his friends died at 13, I had the song “Stand By Me” played at his funeral. All of the 300+ kids in attendance knew why.

Our generation *loves* this movie, but River Phoenix also especially. He was such an original talent and so full of emotion and depth, even at his young age here. Like Heath Ledger and Kurt Cobain, he was just a special, special human being. Gone too soon. ❤
RIP. He was too young to die like that. It sucks. That Viper Bar was kind of legendary though.

Isn't it crazy how one man, Stephen King, wrote this movie, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. Arguably three of the top ten films of all time. Insane how good he is at writing.

I hope for "the Dark Tower" to get LotR level of movie series, that would be a banger.

Yes, one of the greatest storytellers of our time. He understands humanity beautifully; it's a shame so many know him as only a horror writer, he's so much more than that.
Kiefer Sutherland as Ace and John Cusack as the dead older brother, Denny, in some of their earliest roles.
Kief got the part of David in the Lost Boys after Joel Schumacher saw him in SBM. SBM is still his favourite role he told me.

Stand by Me is a timeless film. Stephen King's story is skillfully brought to the screen under the direction of Rob Reiner and the 1950s are brought back to life just as successfully as Stephen King so often does in his stories and novels, with the slicked back hair, the hot rods, in the film and excellent '50s soundtrack.
Also, the saddest part of this film is about how life causes even great friends to drift apart. Something you really don't think about until years after it happens is that one day someone you knew turned left, you turned right and that was the last time you ever saw them.
That is one of the most honest lines ever. For me... it's true. The happiest Summer ever.
Isn’t it crazy how so many of us have a “happiest summer ever”? One that usually revolves around the deep bond you created with a friend or friends that we drifted away from.

The movie was originally called The Body. Keifer Sutherland (the bully) was teaching the song "Stand By Me" to River Phoenix (the friend that died) on guitar and while they were playing it, the director passed by and renamed the movie to what it is now. The director said he hasn't heard this song in a long time. I read that somewhere and made this movie so much better. Thanks for your reaction. Priceless.
Sean Astin auditioned for this film, but had the unfortunate timing of having to go after River Phoenix. He said that when he walked in, almost everyone in the room was crying and dabbing away tears from the performance River had given. He didn't say which scene it was, but I'd HAVE to think it was the campfire scene.
Sean Astin was in this movie wasn't he? Eyeball chambers looks just like him. I gotta go look it up.
EDIT- No, the guy who played Eyeball was called Bradley Gregg. Weird.
"Joker"s Joaquin Phoenix's brother, River. Died tragically. He was a huge thing and considered one of THE up and coming super stars. Extremely talented. Had a small role as young Indiana Jones in one of the iconic IJ movies.
River got chosen for the role of young Indy by Harrison Ford himself who played his dad in Mosquito Coast. Tells you everything you need to know about Rivers talent.
I often wonder if Johnny Depp would have been as successful if Brandon Lee and River Phoenix had lived.

I'm SO excited you guys are reacting to this film! River Phoenix (who plays Chris Chambers in the film) was the biggest young star of the late 80's/early 90's. He died 7 years after this movie when he was just 23 years old of a drug overdose outside of The Viper Room in LA. The Viper Room was a nightclub owned by Johnny Depp. His brother is Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker) . He's the one who made the 911 call when he died.
Also, Stand by Me was loosely based on Stephen King's childhood.

It’s amazing the careers all four had; Will Weaton with Startrek, Corey Feldman with Goonies, Lost boys and every other 80’s film haha, and Jerry O’Connell did great in the 90’s. Not forgetting to mention Kiefer, Dreyfus, and Cusack. This film was on constant replay at my house along with TopGun, Jurassic Park, and a handful of other 80’s and 90’s flicks.
You should react to The Breakfast Club. Like Stand By Me it has a simple storyline with great character moments.

If you ever watch The Sandlot, you'll be reminded of this movie's style. It's like this with the narration, but a kid-friendly version. It's also a cult classic when it comes to baseball movies.

I would argue Stand By Me is kid friendly. I watched it around 10-12 years old.
I’m a grown ass 28 year old man and this movie STILL makes me cry..
Watching this film reminds me I have more time behind me that ahead. The taste is bitter sweet, but unforgettable.
I remember reading somewhere that this movie got its name from the director seeing Keifer Sutherland teaching River Phoenix how to play "Stand by Me" on the guitar and inspired him to change it from the book title "The Body" - Which is so perfect since the movie is focusing on the journey of these boys and the tragic destination is completely brushed over
I saw this film for the first time when I was 11 which I think is the perfect time to watch it. That same year I started secondary school and within 2 years I didn’t speak to my two friends from primary who were at the same school as me, and they really just became faces I passed in the hall every now and then. Stand By Me will always be one of my favourite movies
Wow I had thé exactly same experience....saw it as a 12 year old and some of my best friends were gone a few years later 😢....I guess this was a perfect movie about real life ❤❤
That is a very true statement, I remember my childhood and you don't have friends like the ones you have when you are a kid.
I grew up with 2 girls in my neighborhood, we were best friends. 65 years later we're still close and get together once a month for lunch and keep in contact in between. Not many people can say that. I know how lucky I am.

It's painful in a way. It seems like all relationships have terms and hidden meanings; I've been burned so many times it makes me not want to try anymore. The most rewarding and true relationships I have these days are the ones I have with animals, honestly.
Ash, you nailed it - it felt like a friendship ended with all those kids at the end of the movie.
I adore this movie! What an incredible cast of child actors. Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and especially River Phoenix absolutely made this one.

The one scene with the deer never fails to make me ponder the meaning behind it...
It wasn't integral to the plot or moved the story forward in anyway, but it's my favorite scene. I always considered it Gordie's transition beyond childhood. A kid would be beyond ecstatic to share with anyone about a magical moment that had just happened to them. But he kept it to himself... I wonder what other people think about that scene.
I'm from Oregon, LOVE this movie. It means a lot to many of us Oregonians and those young Gen Xers like myself. This movie was a movement in my youth!

when i was a kid i watched this movie nine hundred times. i had it in VHS. yes I'm old. my childhood was similar, minus the body😂. stealing smokes, hanging out in the tracks. motley Crue of friends. great movie
Director Rob Reiner named his production company Castle Rock Entertainment after the town in this movie.
Stand by Me really captures the way boys that age act around each other. I had friends like that.
When Rob Reiner finished the movie he did a private screening for Steven King. When it was over. King didn't say anything at first, and Reiner noticed that King was shaking. After a while, King told Reiner it was the best adaptation of one of his works he'd ever seen.
Other movies directed by Rob Reiner: This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride (which you've reacted to), When Harry Met Sally, Misery (which you've also reacted to), and A Few Good Men.
Meathead was one hell of a director.
River Phoenix was an incredible actor! If you like his performance in this movie you should check out Running on Empty (where he’s the main lead),it’s a great kinda sad/tragic film but a great watch

Thank you for watching this. This was the first movie my mom took me to watch in the theater. Mom loved it some much we stayed for the second showing. When the VHS came out she bought it. We watched multiple times over that weekend. Plus this was the last movie I watched with her the day before she died. So things went full circle.

Hannah was spot on at the end, friendships are the best thing to happen to humans, 3 years ago I had a stroke (im still recovering, but I'm miles ahead of where I was) I didn't know if anyone would care, but they did, even people I hadn't seen for years got in touch, they're all incredible in my eyes, just the moral support, has kept my spirits up, and its really given me a boost while learning to walk and talk again
Hands down best King adaptation. No contest. Just everything about this movie is as close to perfect as one can get. The perfect coming of age story and the best movie to watch whenever you just need a good tear up/cry. Glad anytime someone watches this amazing film.

I'd have to say Shawshank is the best King adaptation but Stand By Me is close.
On the special features of the DVD Rob Reiner tells the story about how during the shooting of the scene when River Phoenix tells the truth of the stolen school money, he couldn't get his tears flowing. So Reiner pulled him aside and told him to think about the first time he was betrayed by an adult. That worked. It worked so well in fact, that River became an emotional mess and couldn't stop crying. So they had to wrap shooting until the next day. Reiner also said River never told him what memory he had thought of.
This movie impacted me in ways I can’t describe when I watched for the first time at 13.. I always wished I had friends like them to explore with. Thank you guys! I’ve been waiting for this since you said you put it on patreon!!❤

If someone summarized the basic plot of this film, you would think there's not enough story there to contain a feature length film. A group of boys follow the train tracks some miles into the countryside to find the dead body of a boy hit by a train. It is so simple. What makes it great is the characters, their relationships to each other, and the emotion, the feeling, radiating off the screen in several of the scenes.
Great, believable characters that deal with real issues make great movies, not autobots and video games.
The thing is, that movie is just as good however many times you watch it. Classic!
Remember watching this film when i was 12 thinking it was my best film. It's now my son's best film

I have watched this film 1000 times and yet still cried with you guys (again) at the end! I was 12 when this movie came out and remember even being proper effected in the cinema. River Pheonix for my generation was GOD! His sudden death was a big one....:(
I've seen this movie several times and while I'm used to crying at the end, I NEVER would have expected to be crying due to laughing so hard! This is the second time you two have made me laugh so hard I'm crying to movies I have never laughed at before. Some of it is the comments between you but I have to be honest, most of it is the face Ash makes when he laughs. It gets me every time. Loved this one!

I’m totally with you about friendships. This movie really makes you think about it more than you usually might do, doesn’t it? Even if they may come and go, even if they remain but may fluctuate in closeness, it doesn’t make them unimportant; and the truly real ones, no matter how long or brief, what fate may bring, are especially _that_ important. Be a friend, make a friend, and keep the ones you can. Thanks for sharing the experience with us.
This. Even if that friend is not a friend anymore, even if you haven't seen each other for ages and haven't spoken in years, it doesn't mean that friendship was not important or true.
i said this in regards to your "its a wonderful life" reaction...but y'all are the perfect reactors for this movie because of the empathy you show every single time. especially for this film, especially in regards to children. this is such a beautiful movie and has been a favorite of mine for years and years. i cry every single time.
apparently it was a very healing, emotional movie for the cast to film as ell. all of them, with the exception of jerry (vern) had very, very difficult childhoods. jerry even apologized later in life saying he was so sorry he couldnt help them more. will comforted him and told him he was just a child himself, not to hold on to that guilt. rob reiner the director worked hard at making the kids feel safe and comfortable on set. he said one of his biggest and painful regrets is while filming the train scene, was he yelled at the boys. i think it speaks volumes that that's one of his regrets. when you think about how too often adults just speak so callously to children, knowing that in the heat of the moment, he he yelled and it's something he regrets to this day is just very touching.
to this day i still carry chris's words to gordie "no man, he just doesn't know you" in my heart in regards to my own relationship with my dad. i think this is such a beautiful film and i am so thrilled to see your reaction to it. i'll have to grab some tissues first!

#3 in my favorite movies of all time. It hits a little harder when you were the same age as these characters in 1986 (when the time was set in the early 60's). My friends and I went into the woods and explored train tracks (perhaps dangerously) to find adventure like Gordy, Chris, Vern, and Teddy.
I see myself in all four of them.
I can't express how much I love this movie. It's perfect from minute one.
What will blow your mind is that the short story this was adapted from, The Body, was in the same novella collection, Different Seasons, that also had the story that spawned The Shawshank Redemption movie.

It has been ages since I have seen this movie. One of the best movies from the 1980s. I was in my last year of high school when this came out.
this movie will always have a special place in my heart because my late tia is the one who first showed it to me. its so good and always brings my mood up and then down and then back up again lol.
Friendship, REAL friendship is so damn hard if not impossible to come by. Watched this movie once and then never again because I have no friends today and never had friends when I was younger.

I'm in my 50s and, to this day, almost all my closest friends are from high school and junior high school.

The death of childhood, and that place we always visit in our hearts to as we get olders.
I was 8 years old when this movie came out. I kind of remember watching it in the theater. I think the thing about this movie that impressed me most as a kid was how real it felt because the kids in this movie were kids like me. they acted the way me and my friends acted. They talked like me and my friends talked. The only thing that didn’t feel realistic at the time was the ending. because I always assume that I would be friends with my friends all the way until I was an old man. I didn’t realize that as time moves on people drift in and out of your life and sure enough just like at the end of this movie all of my friends from back then are now gone. Some are dead, some just have lives of their own now and don’t have time to visit with me anymore. I miss them all.
This was mostly filmed about 5 miles away from where I grew up. I spent a lot of time in that little town, it's actually called Brownsville Oregon, not castle rock. There's a festival there to celebrate the movie every year

Few authors have ever succeeded in capturing the magic, pain and authenticity of what it is like to be a kid the way Stephen King has.
I always like to think, it´s because he remembers being a kid so exceptionally well.
You guys are going to love "The Goonies" (1985) & "Monster Squad" (1987).
There is a theory that the kid Gordie is actually Stephen king as a child writing his story
I cry harder at this movie than any other movie I’ve seen. I’m a guy, with a tightly-knit group of male friends whom I’ve loved and cherished since age 10-12. It speaks to that specific life so deeply and intimately. It destroys me every time.

Awwww, poor Ash. I get it. Im a major dog lover and have had some large breads. An American Bulldog named Jake and an Akita named Buster. Even tho they r extremely loving dogs they could take u down just trying to play or love on u. So I get the fear, specially if ur not used to them. Hannah give ur man a cuddle and let him know hes safe in ur arms. Now to the film...This is such a great classic. An amazing story of friendship. Hahaha, God love, I knew our grl would be gaggin'. “Now and Then” is the _female_ version of this film. It is absolutely fantastic, and I am certain you’d both love it!
Also, friends are the family we choose. Just as importantly they are the family that _chooses_ us. A powerful thing that. When you’re young, and in search of a sense of belonging. It’s a powerful thing at any age.

Great movie! I watched it a few yrs ago and wondered about one of my friends when I was young. Long story short: looked up his name on facebook, messaged him and we chatted there for hours, reminiscing our childhood and also my grandmother that watched us all when we were little. That small time messaging meant the world to me. ❤❤❤. One of the best movies ever.

My parents enjoyed it when I discovered this movie and had all kinds of questions about the pop culture of their youth. I got the soundtrack album (on cassette) and pretty much all the songs on it were songs my mom loved
I never had a group of friends like this before. It’s really hard to find friends to connect with like this. Most people just wanna use you which is sad and that’s why I wanna give up on finding friends to connect with. I talk to a lot of people but never connected with anyone. The only friend I probably had a connection with was my dad. He died in an accident a year ago.
Been looking forward to you two watching this since you teased us with it a few weeks ago. I first saw this movie when I was around 6 and since then it has hands down been my favorite movie of all time to this day. I may have not understood it fully when I was 6, but from the cast, to the story, to the music, it is captivating and stirs emotions.
Please look into the coming-of-age movie The Way Way Back. It's underrated as heck and has a killer cast. Steve Carell, Toni Collette and Sam Rockwell in one of my favorite roles he has been in.
And Allison Janney is wonderful!

My uncle (who was pretty much a brother to me) died a few years ago. He introduced me to this film when I was around Gordie LaChance's age. I became a writer but sometime after watching this for the first time, I had completely forgot LaChance aspired and became a writer too. In fact, your reaction made me realize the parallels between me and this film and propelled me to write this. I also grew up in a small town in Oregon, the setting of this film. But most of all, I never had friends like the ones I had when I was 12. I'm 33 now, probably around the same age as Adult Gordie in this film. Thank you both for this. I teared up a bit with yall at the end. You are now by far my favorite reactors on youtube.

Actually, when I inaugurated my little outdoor movie set-up, the first film I screened was “Stand By Me.”
My five best friends I met by the time I was 17. It's 40 years later and we still get together a few times a year even though many of us now are married have had kids that are grown up, etc. I love every one of them and our friendship almost feels as it did 40 years ago when we had no real responsibilities. It's Thursday night. Three of my friends are coming over and the plan is to hit the shooting range for an hour, get some food after and then back to my place for a few beers and poker. I look forward to when my friends come over - especially since I'm single but they have to break away from their families for a few hours to do so. I understand and respect that sacrifice. Great friendships never die.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, along with The Sandlot.
