- Light as a Feather is the first studio album credited to jazz band Return to Forever led by keyboardist Chick Corea (credited on the album cover as "Chick Corea and Return to Forever"). It features saxophonist/flautist Joe Farrell, bassist Stanley Clarke, vocalist Flora Purim and her husband, drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, who all performed on Corea's previous album Return to Forever, from which the group took its name.
Content
The style of the music remains mostly the same as the first album, though Purim's vocals were given a larger role. Corea produced the album for Polydor Records. Clarke played double bass, though for most of his later career he has played bass guitar.
"Captain Marvel" is a fast Latin piece that provided the name for Stan Getz's album released in the same year (with Corea, Clarke and Moreira guesting). Airto plays percussion and Purim sings without words during the song's main riff.
The album ends with "Spain", which was inspired by, and whose introduction was taken from, Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (1939).
This was the second of only two albums featuring the band's original line-up. Purim and her husband Airto would leave after its release (to be replaced by guitarist Bill Connors and drummer Lenny White); Joe Farrell also left at this time, but would return to the band for their seventh and eighth albums (Musicmagic and Live); bassist Stanley Clarke remained with the band through all of its line-up changes.
Light as a Feather won the 1972 Playboy Jazz Album of the year and has been selected by many magazines and polls as one of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded. For many years this album has been listed on The Absolute Sound super disc list and the Stereophile list of "Records to Die For". It is also featured in Tom Moon's 1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die.

The one almost blew me away like a child blowing dandelion seeds into the wind. There is just so much going on here at the same time. I just find it hard to wrap my head around it all. I have never attempted to play to any jazz, as it would probably end up a total mess. Love those short fills about 2/3s of the way through, and that redone ride is the cat’s pajamas. I really enjoyed watching/listening to what you are doing here.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️

Great job! You caught the breezy vibe of this piece. Nice to hear the Zildjians. This album has had, for me, the most influence on my Latin Jazz drumming. A great vibe to listen to after my lengthy camping trip as I wake up to the modern world again. Also, I recently learned from an interview with Airto, that Flora played those aux percussion parts. I always wondered about that, because to me he was a Latin percusionist first.

What a beautiful drum composition, Earl. There is so much going on in the song that it is hard for me to try to separate particular beats or fills.
I had a hard time differentiating 4 buzz rolls on sheet music yesterday, and you downloaded this piece of music that is mesmerizing to my eyes to watch and a joy to listen to. ( playing it will always be a dream).

Rated "EE" for Epic Earl! Wow, ... that was cool! What I would consider almost 'straight ahead/latin' jazz instead of the fusion RTF is known for (or at least what I'm familiar with). Great job, great mix, and the Zildjians are really singing here, and the flat top turned out great!

Airto had a way of pulsing the rhythm with the band Thad incorporated elements of Tony Williams straight ahead time and his amazing Latin drumming. I’m a just trying to hang with these guys! @@thomasnussbaum4711 Thomas, I got the 22” Avedis in 2021 used. The date code is 2016 model that is heavier than most it 2716g. It is one of the best 22” Avedis cymbals that I heard!
