You're reading it wrong if you think Warde Manuel is why Jim Harbaugh left Michigan football

  • A new book is coming out on Michigan football and there's an excerpt of a chapter about Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan, spanning from the time the NCAA started investigating and the interim between the national championship game and when he accepted the Chargers job.
Some media outlets are proclaiming that, due to what it says in the excerpt, Warde Manuel is why Jim Harbaugh left Ann Arbor for Los Angeles. But if that's what you think, you're not reading what was said clearly. We delve deeper, peeling back layers of the onion to show really who was at fault. We also revisit some aspects of the Connor Stalions saga and share some inside intel (which we may or may not have shared before -- we cannot remember). And then we get to the bottom of it all and share why Jim Harbaugh ultimately left the Wolverines.

Harbaugh's quote (which sounds like it wasn't intended to go public) sounds sort of like someone who felt conflicted about pursuing NFL opportunities while still being devoted to his alma mater and needed to come up with a justification for it.

This was a hit piece that Harbaugh and his team put out to make him look better about leaving and to stab Manuel on his way out- perhaps justified. Michigan’s administration is so backwards and not forward thinking, without JH. They lack a backbone, unlike OSU, Oregon and the entire SEC. They have one of the best brands in all of sports but act like they’re Rutgers, irrelevant. Their alack of awareness towards the business of college football is unhinged and it all starts at the top- Manuel, the administration, etc… Harbaugh was going to leave, because his ultimate goal was a Super Bowl. But he knows Manuel isn’t the AD Moore and the program needs going forward. This was his last chance to get rid of him for Moore’s sake and for the program he rebuilt.

The SEC in general always has each others backs. They all break the rules and always have but they all acknowledge that and refrain from burying each other. The Big Ten is the true conference of hate. There is no conference pride and we all hate each other and have zero problem throwing each other under the bus. The SEC doesn't just doesn't get down like us.

You can look at differently depending on how most situations play out. The fact is that most top programs would have fired Harbaugh sometime either before or during the 2-4 season. Betting on Joe Milton 3.5 years ago was a frighteningly shocking outcome in real time…in the history of Alex Smith and Andrew Luck. It just wasn’t expected. Manuel got tough and laid down a new incentive plan which essentially worked over the next 3 years. A CEO or Board of Directors of a company looking at things objectively might think that Harbaugh’s revised contract after the 2-4 season was genius. What happened after the 2-4 season? Michigan just turned the corner.

I'm a very proud alum and Harbaugh fan. The Michigan sign stealing scandal occurred under Harbaugh's tenure, creating significant controversy. While one can debate whether it gave the team a competitive edge, there is no debate that it occurred under Harbaugh's watch. Athletic Director Warde Manuel and the University had no involvement or prior knowledge of the incident. This situation placed the University in a difficult position as it must protect its brand and manage the fallout from potential sanctions. Harbaugh may have sought stronger support from the University, but the institution had to weigh its reputation and the risk of severe penalties, including paying the highest salary in football amid the very high likelihood of sanctions. This created a fundamental conflict of interest, despite both sides generally wanting the marriage to work. Also of note, Harbaugh faced two violations within a year (3 games each for different program infractions). One of these involved a relatively minor infraction, which could have been swiftly resolved by pleading guilty to buying a burger. However, his personality and approach to the situation complicated matters extremely. Ultimately, these factors combined to create a scenario where parting ways was in the best interest of all parties involved. I wish Harbaugh could be the coach at Michigan until retirement and believe that we would repeat (possibly may still repeat) and would have been the best Michigan coach ever- 3 consecutive Big 10 titles, 3 consecutive Ohio State wins, a national championship and player development off the charts with 3 and 4 star talent. Unfortunately, there was also a certain amount of fatigue and things played out differently, There is no villain here, certainly not Warde Manuel nor the University.

@@danielroberts3920 Ohio doesn't get to claim that ANY of their 3-peat losses were due to "cheating."
Michigan blasted Ohio in 2021 before Connor Stalions had even been hired.
In 2022, Michigan again blasted Ohio with Stalions on staff; however, Ohio's own coaches have publicly stated that they'd changed their signs specifically for that year's Michigan game.
In 2023 Ohio got 3-peated MONTHS after the signgate story broke.
This constant chirping from Ohio about Michigan "cheating" to beat them three years running is not merely factually inaccurate; it is indicative of a soft whiny culture at Ohio---the late great Wayne Woodrow Hayes NEVER whined or made excuses and must be rolling over in his grave. Man up boys.

Does a fresh AD make their first act to fire Juwan? If this AD keeps Harbaugh, Minter is still going to the NFL so who's the DC? Does Moore listen to other teams that might pick up the phone if he's not slated to be HC at Michigan any time soon?

Warde Manuel is responsible for Michigan's program, okay, Isiah. Manuel is a dartomint implemente to Michigan sports. Manuel from NIL, which is going insanely left-sideways, being days & dollars short, also Michigan a school
net-equity worth behind Harvard, Stanford's recruiting department is an absolute joke. Michigan should have nothing the best. Are you aware that Alabama, Oregon, and Michigan have had no recruiting from the last- historical seasons?
And Isiah, we need a top 3-5 recruiting class. Actually, are you really kidding me? It is absolutely unacceptable and embarrassing. The problem with Manuel is whether it can be Michigan's boosters, but you need an AD who can convince them to invest in Michigan sports. Do you want to bet if Santa Ono gets Joe Castiglione that financially, in a year or two, Michigan recruiting will convert 180 top 3-5 recruiting classes in all
levels of Michigan sports program? That will equal an additional 50M-100M dollars with advertising for the school.
Besides the TV revenue from BTN, FoxSports, and ESPN. Feel me; Manuel is the type of AD that will suit em better
in schools like Central Michigan, & Miami Of, Ohio. Manuel even lifted a finger to help C-Moore get staff. Isiah wonders what Manuel does all day feel-me? Isiah, may you, if you are a veteran or a family member who served the country, thank you more than you can know. May you and your family have a fanstanic Memorial Weekend🫡 & always GOBLUE-NATTYUP🏆!
