OK Shane. You want the back story? You got it. - PART 1 - (part 2 continues on your review of RECON, Behind enemy lines) So funny you mention for STRYPER to "watch out" for Holy Soldier. Actually they were torn from the same cloth of sorts. Both Stryper and Holy Soldier were Managed and backed financially by Daryn Hinton, who's family was involved in "Hollywood" for many years. Another main reason why these two bands were connected in the same family , as it were, is because they both were involved in a "rock and rock church" back in the 80's called "Sanctuary", that basically started from a bible study at the Sweet's house in La Mirada in the early 80's. I found out about Sanctuary after attending a Stryper concert in September of '84. This church was pastored by long haired Steve Valdez, leading packs of long haired rockers and head bangers that no other church wanted. Because of this, many musicians started going there and therefore was saturated with many musicians that had the pick of the litter to form a band. Many, many bands were formed there or met there. Eventually Sanctuary released complication albums called "California Metal" that featured many of the bands that were "born" there. Some of the bands that originated there were Stryper, Barron Cross, Neon Cross, Recon, Eternal Ryte, Holy Soldier, Crystavox, Emerald, Holy Rite, Guardian, Deliverance, Vengeance Rising...and the list goes on. The original singer for Holy Soldier, formed in 1985, was Robbie Brauns. For reasons that I am not aware of, Robbie was not a part of the band by the time Holy Soldier recorded their first album in 1990. In 1986 ish, I use to attend a bible study at Andy Robbins house, the founder of Holy Soldier. Robbie was at that time no longer with the band and they were looking for a singer. Hey !! I sing !! So back to Daryn Hinton. Because she was the manager for the band, regardless of how well I knew the boys from the band, I was still required to provide a head shot, demo tape, Bio...blaw blaw blaw, which I didn't have. And with all the "red tape" ahead of me, a try out rehearsal was nowhere in sight. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, (Sanctuary) I heard that George Ochoa, founder of the band RECON was also looking for a singer. Hey!! I sing!! He gave me a demo tape of a song that had no lyrics yet. He told me to write lyrics to this song and I'll schedule a rehearsal in a couple of weeks. REALLY!!!?? Goodbye Holy Soldier tryouts! RECON, here I come. So I wrote the lyrics to the song and named it "Break Out". After the tryout, I was informed that they were looking for something more like a "DIO" type voice and I had more of a Bon Jovi-ish type range. So.....needless to say, I didn't get the gig. Also Holy Soldier went on to find Steven Patrick, who ended up replacing Robbie and recording the same album you heard today. The story didn't end there for me though. As the story goes, after my try out with RECON, George mentioned that they were also looking for a rhythm guitar player, and if I knew anyone to let him know. Hey !! I play guitar !! News to George, he then gave me another tape to learn a handful of original songs. He rescheduled another rehearsal as a rhythm guitar player a few weeks later. As luck would have it, I got that gig and became the rhythm guitar player for RECON that basically started in 1987 and lastest many years to come. (more on this later). We recorded our first DEMO in that year that included four songs. The DEMO let Sanctuary know that we were ready to submit a song for their compilation album. So we went into the studio, recorded two songs, and those two songs, "Light the fire" and Dreams" were released on the "California Metal - Volume II" album in 1988. Those two songs then caught the eye of Capitol's, Intense Records. We went on to record and release our first full album in 1990 called "Behind Enemy Lines". - (part 2) of this story will take place on Shane's first listen to RECON's - Behind Enemy Lines. ~Eddie Starline ua-cam.com/video/jMDEcrpqKn4/v-deo.html

Hey Eddie! Great back story of the history. You guys (Recon), were one of my favorite bands along with Holy Soldier back in the day. In fact, I strayed into Cornerstone 2000 to surprise my good buddy Mike Grato and ended up stayin’ with him and his wife during the festival as I was going thru a rough divorce at the time and needed to get away with my son. We spent the whole festival with you guys and you were all so gracious and supporting even to a freeloading bum such as myself at the time. What an experience!
I watched a interview with the lead guitarist the other day with this band and he took a job with the railroad as insurance way back when the Last Train album came out in 1992 if the band didn't make it big...very smart because now he is almost retired after working with the railroad making big money with huge benefits ...Not many musicians played their future out early in the game and lost big when their popularity took a dive
Really enjoyed your review. This album remains one of the best metal albums I’ve ever heard (regardless of the “Christian” label). At the time, I was very devout (young and easily lead). Over the years, I found my own peace and steer clear of most religious avenues, however, good music is good music and this band was indeed GREAT. Composition and songwriting was top notch. Stephen’s vocals…. Ahhhhhh. SO clear, strong and emotional. I’m happy this band played a big part in my teenage years. I’m 50 now. Wow. 🤘
I so appreciate your objective view of Christian artists. Holy Soldier was a great band. The lead singer is now a country artist. This is an anti abortion song.
Seen these guys live at Cornerstone. The drum solo was something I’ll never forget. He used those oversized plastic kid baseball bats!!! And it sounded impeccable!!
Great reaction...you always have me rolling. :) Great song choice David. Shane, there are some VERY notable exceptions that you have yet to do from around this era. Shout/Ken Tamplin, Ransom, The Crucified, Believer, One Bad Pig, Haven, Armageddon, and a few others immediately come to mind. You might get a request for one of those! And also, Whiteheart? How did that get in there?
How could I forget. Plus all the hard rock Pakaderm/Elefante artists. Also, who is going to be courageous enough to request the band that started it all..... Sprinklerhead!! :D
By 91 this band was advertising for a new singer. I know because I answered the ad, met the drummer at a Burger King parking lot to play my cassette demo in his car. He commented that I sounded like Vince Neil and that was it. Obviously they wanted someone like their current singer.
Always thought he sounded like Terry illous of XYZ, loved this album, the second one as well where they did the Stones cover.. Eyes Of Innocence is another great one
because they had several years to create n fine- tune those first 10 songs.. After that, they have only a few months to create new songs for another album,.. But sometimes, the sophomore effort is way better, like Barren Cross or Motley Crue.. or, Ratt..
I saw them in the mid 90’s. It wasn’t the original singer but it was still good. It was around the time grunge was taking over. The crowd wasn’t very big. Small venue, there was actually a choir band playing after them, we left after Holy Soldier did there set…

I saw these guys live back in the day, touring for this, their debut, album, at a place called ‘The King’s Place’ in Columbus, Ohio. I remember it was hot in that building and I remember having a great time and I remember the drummer at one point banging on the drums with those big, toy plastic bats. Banging on the drums, then banging on his head with them as he hit the bass drums. It was fun and silly and they ROCKED! Also, I won some radio contest thing where they gave away a promo package from that album. I still have it somewhere packed away. If I remember correctly it was a copy of the “Stranger” CD single, a cassette of the whole album and a black and white promo photo of the band…all inside a tuck box that also had a black and white photo of the band. To this day, I’ve never seen another one. This is one of my favorite Holy Soldier songs and probably the strongest and most haunting anti-abortion songs I’ve ever heard. It still hits as hard as it did the first time I heard it.
I found you kinda missed the message behind it. The unborn child was crying out.. and people choose to not listen to the abortion, murder. Hear no evil… is a powerful song.
Other Christian bands to check out: X-Sinner, Armageddon, Saint, Trytan, Haven, Final Axe, Daniel Band, Stairway, Recon, Seventh Angel, Zion, Recon, Angelica, Joshua, Fires Of Babylon, Rob Rock, Ultimatum, Die Happy, Red Sea, Novella, Scarlet Red, Philadelphia, Jerusalem, Kreyson, Signum Regis, Narnia, Adastasia, Heel, Oratorio, Saviour Machine, Audiovision, ReinXeed, Golden Resurrection, Neal Morse Band, Theocracy, Detritus, Rage Of Angels, Impellitteri, Messiah Prophet
Seventh Angel "Lament for the Weary" for sure. classic! and Jerusalem "Dancing on the Head of the Serpent" ! He already listened to SAINT "Time's End" No one mentions STRYKER lol "Crush the Head of Satan" they are garage band but that song is kinda cool

He used to work at the same company I worked for in the 90's. It was called Dangerous Threads and we sold rock and roll flashy clothes to metal, country, and wrestlers....lol
In case you are wondering the song is about an abortion through the eyes of the child being aborted. I used to be friends with the lead singer, back a while ago. Clever use if words. I love the song.
Promise Man is a great album, as long as you don't compare it to the first two. It is a totally different direction and could easily be a different band.
Great song and great band. Holy Soldier released the best album first (Holy Soldier 1990) and then went downhill from there. Second album (Last train 1992) was good but after that they released two albums that I have only listened through only once (Promise Man, Encore). DVD from 2006 (Live, Rare and Raw) is great again because it’s mostly about those two first albums.
The following link has an interview with Jamie Cramer- one of the original members of Holy Soldier. Supposedly when they were looking for a singer after the orginal singer left, Kelly Hanson (Foreigner) and Jani Lane (Warrant) had auditioned for the band but it wasn't the right fit. ua-cam.com/video/sMLDAxeIZYc/v-deo.html
So, not sure if you have covered them yet, kinda same era,,,,far my fav chritian band at the time..... "The Brave" Check out tracks Tears of a Broken Heart, All Together Now; Ride The Rhythm, etc. Thanks for the content as usual.
Wonderful band. Came out of Los Angeles in the late 80s. Had a distribution deal with A&M Records. First two albums are fantastic-amazing vocals and songwriting. Two great guitar players and a solid rhythm section. They should have been huge but were late to the game. They choose a lead single (well, their first video anyway) that is brilliant but is controversially about abortion. The song begins getting airplay on MTV until the channel realizes what the song is about, and then it disappears. Their first album isn’t released until 1990 and by the time the second one comes out (1992’s Last Train) Grunge has already gotten a strong foothold. They don’t get good support from their label on their second album-no tour support, and are told they must tour the record or they’ll be dropped. Internal strife tears this band apart on that tour and the band parts ways with Steven Patrick (vocalist) near the end of the tour. They completely retool for their third album which only contains two of the original 5 band members from the first album, and one of the guitarists from the second record. It’s a radical departure from their signature sound. Good but may as well have been a different band. That’s Holy Soldier in a nutshell. For me, their first two records are among the very best in the genre. Better than anything Crue, Ratt or Poison ever released for sure, and it kills me that they aren’t more of a household name.
Hey hey. Im sure I've heard this one before... Heh. From the first album all the songs are great. It's so difficult to pick one. The second, "Virtue and Vice" from last week and the title track "Last Train"-- the time when doing the same formula of arena rock, hair metal just wasn't going to cut it anymore Live? Terry Russell's drum solo with wiffle bats. Not something one sees often, if ever.
Great band but could never live up the hype the magazines were through at them. They were labeled as the next Stryper. My two favorite songs on the self titled album are Tear Down the Walls and When the Reign Comes Down. This is a good song as well. Touchy subject matter.
Please please check out Five Finger Death Punch “ This is the way featuring The Legend DMX” god bless his soul rest in piece!! It’s so good ! I hope others would like to see it as well! ❤❤❤❤❤
Because he chopped his penis off and now goes by the name of stevie odonnell as a post op transsexual. I don't think it ticks the Christian box anymore. She married a female from the UK. Last Halloween. Mind blown?
I had the debut album when it came out n loved it. Their 2nd album kinda sucked but had a great cover of The Stones' "gimme shelter" (its fantastic!)... and after that, I don't know what happened to them. u asked
This song is obviously about abortion. Very hot topic right now with elections coming up and the recent SC ruling. Great song and band. Other great songs not mentioned are The Pain Inside Of Me, When the reign comes down, Eyes of Innocents, and Last Train. I was not that thrilled with the third CD. It may have been a different lead singer. They tried that mid 90's sound but it didn't work.
I remember a Christian band that did an abortion video where it showed the doctor throwing the baby into the trash or something like that. Only I can never remember what band it was. I think it was a heavier metal type band. Anyone know what band / video I'm thinking of?
Easily one of the most underrated record of the era. Killer top to bottom.
This guy was a beast on the mic. His voice is so haunting.
These guys and Rage of Angels were absolutely killer.
Yes and barren cross. Then impelleterri came along and beat them all

If no one has said it, it's about abortion
forgot about this band. actually own this CD
Hey hey. Im sure I've heard this one before... Heh. From the first album all the songs are great. It's so difficult to pick one. The second, "Virtue and Vice" from last week and the title track "Last Train"-- the time when doing the same formula of arena rock, hair metal just wasn't going to cut it anymore
Live? Terry Russell's drum solo with wiffle bats. Not something one sees often, if ever.
Great band but could never live up the hype the magazines were through at them. They were labeled as the next Stryper. My two favorite songs on the self titled album are Tear Down the Walls and When the Reign Comes Down. This is a good song as well. Touchy subject matter.
Check out Allies - Devil Is A Liar . sounds like it could have been a Sammy Hagar song
That would be our second Allies song, too. I'm for it!
i have always loved this band and this song ....most people don't realize this is an anti abortion song ...life should be loved and valued .
Check out : Reign Come’s Down
I remember the first album, see no evil was about abortion.
Yes, it is very powerful.
Exacto fue de las primeras bandas en oponerse al aborto
@DouglasVillarrealVera more bands had some songs, (barren cross killers of the unborn ).,
Again!! Holy Soldier was way better than Stryper!!
Here again ❤
Please please check out Five Finger Death Punch “ This is the way featuring The Legend DMX” god bless his soul rest in piece!! It’s so good ! I hope others would like to see it as well! ❤❤❤❤❤
I was a SAINT fan. But that was with Josh Kramer.
Steven Patrick has an AMAZING voice. Where is he?????
Stephen Patrick now does country music I don’t even know if he’s a Christian artist anymore you can find his videos on UA-cam

Because he chopped his penis off and now goes by the name of stevie odonnell as a post op transsexual. I don't think it ticks the Christian box anymore. She married a female from the UK. Last Halloween. Mind blown?
I think Guardian would of been next after Stryper as far as popularity.
Can you please do a reaction to
"Self Destruction" by Bloodgood???
Gonna do it for ya my friend, hold tight, it is gonna be a bit but it will be up!~
@@ShaneDiablo Thank you, You Rock 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Why don't you try REZ Band - Defective Youth.
One of these days, you've got to do "Once And For All," by Disciple.
Dr Jones & the King of Rhytim-guardian
Love these guys. But Impelleterri and Stryper were tops
brilliant album
soulful and powerful
From this álbum, stranger is my favorite song 💪💯
I had the debut album when it came out n loved it. Their 2nd album kinda sucked but had a great cover of The Stones' "gimme shelter" (its fantastic!)... and after that, I don't know what happened to them.
u asked
Do Jacob's dreams, theater of war!!!!
Do Tourniquet The Tomb of Gilgamesh, it is a very creative song.
Daniel band
Musicianship is excellent
React to Antestor.. any song
“They might get a swan award!” 😂
I remember a Christian band that did an abortion video where it showed the doctor throwing the baby into the trash or something like that. Only I can never remember what band it was. I think it was a heavier metal type band. Anyone know what band / video I'm thinking of?
Dr hatchet? By seventh angel?
@@slamdancer777 Sounds right but I I'm not finding the video on youtube.
Oblation "Dead Unborn"?
If you missed the message, it is talking about abortion. He sang from a babies pov
I very quickly went through the comments and yea, great album. Also, very strong anti-abortion song.
