2007 Mercedes GL450 long-term review. Let's learn the real costs of ownership

Buying a used Mercedes GL450? Watch this first! The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney - Hi, this is the Fast Lane with Joe Tunney (joeloveshawaii@gmail.com) bringing to you a comprehensive catalogue of hundreds of great vehicles from throughout the automobile industry. Although I specialize in Acura, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, sports cars, SUV's and of course my beloved Honda product line, I also like to review exotic cars from time to time like Ferrari, Dodge Viper, turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars like Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX, as well as affordable vehicles that fit into every budget. For 2017 I am going to make a point of reviewing everything on the market, demonstrating for you the interior and exterior features and specifications, the wheels and tires, trunk space, as well as an overview of power, technology, economy and driving characteristics to give you factual information as well as information unique to this particular vehicle so that you can enjoy a more intelligent shopping experience without ever having to step onto the lot. A little about me. I have been the manager at Infiniti of Kirkland, Honda and Toyota of Seattle and prior to that I ran a high end car boutique in neighboring Bellevue, Washington. For my career I have sold over 10,000 cars so I hope to bring you far more insight than you might ever know to even ask. I show you in some videos how to see if a car has been in an accident, how to make a great buy on a car with a bad Carfax, or why I wouldn't personally buy a car even if it has favorable reviews. Every once in a while I'll even have a little fun to keep the videos fresh but I want to make certain you know that you can always email me at joeloveshawaii@gmail.com if you ever have any questions or feel I have made a mistake or used poor judgment or poor taste. I am truly thankful for the millions of views and more importantly, perhaps much more importantly, I am honored to have been viewed in over 200 countries around the world. We all are ambassadors for the things we believe in regardless of where we were born and from my little corner of the world here outside of Kona, Hawaii in Waikoloa I want to express my sincere gratitude for you having invited me into your home, your place of work, or for simply taking a minute of your valuable time to listen to what I have to say. Maybe we will never meet face to face, but I am forever in your debt for giving me the opportunity to share with you the things I have learned. Hey Joe I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. I just purchased an 07 gl450 with 100k miles and your videos are perfect for me to know what to expect and how to deal with it. Thanks for your time buddy.
This video is very comprehensive and gives insight into ownership of this vehicle and with over 60,000 views, and only 450 likes this video deserves so much more. Joe’s very direct and straightforward, excellent review!
Thanks for your support Revitalized, I appreciate you taking a look!
@@everycarSeattle I am looking at a 2011 GL450 currently with 95k miles. Now I have a better understanding of what the preliminary inspection points should be at this mileage.
I truly appreciate the time you have took to do this review. I'm truly considering getting this SUV, and I'm really happy you went over the specifics.

I really appreciate the detailed review of this vehicle. We are considering buying a 2007 with 90,000 kilometres. I don’t understand why these vehicles lose value so badly. The truck is mint condition with no accidents and they’re asking $14,900 Canadian. Thanks again

JJUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS'S....SO HELPFUL WITH MY FUTURE PURCHSE
This is a better video about basic maintenance on these cars. Most people who do not own a Mercedes which say that they are money pits.

I've owned three. They are money pits.
Most people that say they are money pits owned them to know.
@@PCSPITTER4NY It hasn't been cheap, owning this truck for 7 years...but if I could do it all over again, I'd buy it all over again. It's been a really amazing truck.
@@everycarSeattle it is a nice truck, but it still is a "money trap", meaning they are so cheap used that regular people can afford to buy them, but can't afford to maintain them.
Hey nice video and glad to see you back
Hi Mark! I'm dying to get back into making videos now that we are here in Hawaii and I appreciate you very much for checking them out!

Regarding the oil you can use any 229.5 approved synthetic oil whether it be 0W40 or 5W40. Mobil 1 European formula was only recommended by Mercedes because at the time your GL came out both MB and Mobil 1 had a partnership. As long as the oil has a 229.5 approval and you use a fleece filter you can do the 1 year/10k oil change.
Thanks for the valuable tip!

if you can get ahold of liqi Molly oil that's even better than mobile one. Liqi Molly is what they use in all the European Mercedes. They only recommend mobile 1 over here simply because liqui moly is not as easy to get.
@@brdavis I've never used Liqui Moly so I don't know how it compares to anything else. I love Royal Purple in race cars because the car simply performs differently with Royal Purple...is Liqui Moly that distinctive, or simply an alternative to Mobil 1?
Love the videos...keep em coming

FYI, it's not normal for your GL to go through a quart of oil in 1000 miles. My 18-year-old E320 doesn't consume that much oil that quickly. Keep in mind that the GL450 has a 9-quart oil capacity. Your typical Jiffylube is likely unaware of this oil capacity and assumes that it only takes 6-8 quarts like most vehicles. The more likely scenario is that whoever is changing your oil is underfilling your GL, leading to warnings of low oil and the discovery of missing quarts. I will further guess that once you add the missing quarts, the problem goes away...until the next oil change, that is.
Joe sounds so humble

I agree with your reviews and observations regarding oil usage. I've had various MB's for 15yrs. A lot of online trashing sometimes, but most of them are due to owners not doing proper maintenance.

Sadly he is misunderstood. Oil doesn't just disappear. IF it is not leaking, it is burning. Naturally some oil burns off as the rings coat the cylinder walls a touch, but should be minimal. However the GL has a great undertray catch system and foam, so they hide the fact they are leaking VERY well.
Love your videos they always so informative and overall just awesome!
Keep up the great work!
Why the huge move?!?!?

Guys I’m looking to buy a x166 2013-2015
Price range are very low right now.
Do you guys recommend this model?
Are they reliable?
Any of you guys own a x166?
Great job! I want to get want for my very sweet wife she needs something pretty bad God has blessed me with her and I want to bless her with a gl450.. Thank you I was wondering if this is a good Suv to have. Im still saving but it looks like this is a great SUV.
Just keep changing those fluids and enjoy a lifetime of happy miles...however, never buy one ever without getting a buyer's inspection at the Mercedes dealer first.

@@everycarSeattle Personally avoid dealers at all costs EVERY TIME. Go to a good indy shop. Dealers for the most part dropped their educated techs for monkeys, and the knowledgable ones went on their own.
Good to see you back! Are you selling cars in Hawaii now?
Hi Dave! I was recruited by Hilton to work in Hawaii...in the same town where our vacation house is, so that was good luck for us. However, I realize that I miss cars so much that I'm sure I'll end up doing many more videos than when I was actually selling cars for a living. Thank you so much for taking a look!

I was expecting some numbers on the cost of ownership, type of repairs etc. Did not want a tour of the car.
This is the video you want...an update at 150,000 miles with all of the costs built in: ua-cam.com/video/ix4BumrwCQg/v-deo.html
I like your videos but on this one I was expecting more details about the long term use of the car and experience vs a run down of what the car has and doesn’t have as it if it were a first time review. Also the quality of the video could have been way better if you had started on the other side of the car where the sun was hitting it vs shooting into the sun. Anyway keep up the great work and I look forward to a follow up on how this car has performed in Hawaii.

Hi, I have a 2007 GL 450. the front and back suspension are pretty high. Please, how do I get back to the normal level? thanks
Sometimes they'll get stuck up there and require a service. The same button cluster that brings it up brings it back down.
Your truck looks amazing
I have read countless reviews that the reliability on these GL is that they are 3 out of 5 in reliability very hit or miss.
I've read they have terrible electrical problems and the fixes and maintenance are super pricey. Can you tell
Me anything v
They're expensive to deal with if you get the wrong one, that's for sure. I've taken a few in trade over the years that needed 5-figure reconditioning so we just dumped them at the auction. As a result, their resale value is too low for how nice they are. If you get a buyer's inspection and it checks out, you can really make an amazing buy.
are they safe to buy used with milage anywhere from 65K - 80K?
Agreed, reliability is VERY hit and miss. Skip the diesel 100% as that is just a terrible package. However, if you have the "truck" (it's not) @ 150k miles, I would say it's ok to keep it, but DO NOT BUY any GL near that amount of miles. Skip the 2007 specifically. For me, 1rst gen GL's are very spartan feature wise. The infotainment like anything 5+ years old is generally useless. 2007 does not have a way to get bluetooth outside of changing the head unit, so that you can get Android Auto or Carplay. These came with early Distronic when added, not Distronic Plus, and the rear video screens are pretty worthless now. As for engines, the 450/550 is quite good, but considered only a 200k engine at best sadly. Suspension is actually very DIY, however many parts already are NA, such as steering rack, and getting a rebuilt unit is nigh impossible. Sadly getting these repaired now, while easy, the parts are hard to come by, or must be ordered from Germany or used scrap yards.
Thanks 👍
Hi I see that I have tvs do u know how to get the audio to play threw the radio instead of the headphones?
does the car in video has airmatic becouse i don’t see the classic button that raise the car near the heating seat
It does...I've replaced it twice over the years.
Just bought a 2007 GL450 for $6,000 ....everything seems to be working good and its in great condition but now im worried about the expensive issues that may arise in the future...but nonetheless i feel it was a good buy
Thanks for the review!
That's a great price. It's the kind of truck that costs $70,000 new and you saved $64,000. Keep it for a couple of years and sell it for $5000 and you just had a $70,000 vehicle for two years for a grand. It seems almost crazy that everyone doesn't look at cars this way.
Considering buying one of these for my wife. I think it's time to sell our well-loved BMW X5 and cross over to the dark side (Mercedes).

Dave Nelson still driving the X5 two years later. It’s getting old but owes us nothing. Might be time to start shopping!!
Super nice truck. Is it for sale? Nice review, as well.
Zee B not a truck it's an SUV
Thanks Zee. It might be for sale in the coming months, but I'm not ready to part with it quite yet. Thank you so much for taking a look!
Good call Chris. Despite its lack of a frame, the GL surprisingly still tows 7500 pounds...more even than the truck-based 2007 Escalade.

Did you buy it brand new at the time?
No, we bought it in 2012 with about 70,000 miles. It replaced our 2003 GX470, which replaced our 2000 LandCruiser.
Thank you for the reply.@@everycarSeattle
In terms of the oil, do you just add oil every 1,000 miles on top of regular oil changes or do you need to take it to the shop when it needs more oil?

this is my first time seeing one of your videos, great job! PLEASE get a wireless lapel mic or headset of some sort so I can hear you better. I am torn between this truck and the x5. Have fun in paradise!
I have always been hesitant to get more expensive gear since it's just for fun, but 7 million views on the channel might be an indication that it's time to take things a bit more seriously. If some of the local dealers let me review their cars on my days off, I'll probably take a bigger plunge. Thank you so much for taking a look Chad!

Does your car ever have a slow start?
It does...super frustrating. No one has ever been able to solve it. It disappears for weeks or months at a time and then it's back.
Tons &a tons tons or boot space. Have been inside a Audi Q7? Much bigger with a better interior.

Uses one quart of oil every one thousand miles but there's nothing wrong with it
Sat T Definitely something wrong with it. I've been a tech with Mercedes since 2005. Those trucks don't burn oil when running properly and I've very rarely seen that condition. The 273 engine is a good motor, something is wrong. We have far more trans problems than engine issues.

That's not even what GL stands for.
Here's some Mercedes history/info. Geländewagen is German for "off-road vehicle". Mercedes use the letter "G" in their SUVs to identify them as off-road vehicles. From there, it can take the form of the Geländewagen by having only the letter G, or the letter can be followed with the addition of two letters- LA, LC, LE, or LS. They are all Geländewagens!
