- Excerpts from Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Thayer Award acceptance speech at West Point, May 12, 1962.
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point's mission is "to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army."
I wept listening to this. I couldn't help it.
“Of the Corps, and the Corps, and the Corps”. “I bid you farewell”. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur.
I was never in the military, but this speech gave me chills, and inspired me to do better with my chosen endeavors in life.
As the son of an Indian soldier let me say this: There is a nobility in the call to arms, a call which unites soldiers no matter what land they belong to or flag they fly.
The General's speech embodies that timeless pull.
The General was very famous in the Philippines up to this date
My Dad was a guard at his compound in Manilla in 45'. (37th Inf. Div.) He did not have notes giving this speech. It is so moving. He was not a perfect man. But this speech was the perfect farewell.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Great General. Won two wars. Never should have been fired.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ God Rest His Soul. Broke the Mold..
Excellent and moving speech.
He was and will always be a Hero❤
My grandfather was in the Bonus March.🤔🥺.
One of the greatest patriotic speeches in American history. He was a great general, a controversial but inspired leader. He was not always right, but he was never dishonest or disloyal. He is one of a handful of men, including Nimitz, Halsey and Spruance who saw us through that part of WW2. Strangely, as fate had it, he spent but little of his life here in the States, but he was a great American. I was privileged, in the euphoric months after the war, to stand along lower Broadway and watch him pass.
Huh? He died 19 years after the war not months.
@@AlexB-pp7dc And your point is . . . What did I say that makes your years-vs=months relevant to my respect for him?
@@JoeHarkinsHimself I was just confused that’s all. I thought you said you meant you got to watch him pass like his funeral. I clearly missed read that I apologize
@@AlexB-pp7dc not a problem. I was 13 years old, one of the many thousands of people line the path when he was honored by a classic ticker tape parade up Loew Broadway in NYC. It was an unforgettable day that was another punctuation mark to the end of the war.
There we similar Broadway ticker-tape parades for Eisenhower, Bradley, and many heroes.
Every young American should listen to this. Also, every old American should listen to this.
A few of us Brits could benefit from listening to this too.
"Old soldiers never die;
they just fade away."
by Douglas MacArthur (1880 - 1964)
LOOK AT WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT. THEY USE YOU AND THEN THROW YOU IN THE GARBAGE CAN. AND PRIVATE ENTITIES HAVE TO SUPPLEMENT WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE DOING. I LOVE THAT GOD INSPIRED SONG BY METALLICA DISPOSABLE HEROES. WAKE UP AND REALIZE THESE GENERALS UP ON IN THE PENTAGON ARE CRIMINALS. BLACK SABBATH SONG "WAR PIGS." GOD IS WARNING THOSE CRIMINALS UP IN THE PENTAGON OF THE JUDGMENT THAT IS TO COME. LOOK AT THE LYRICS IN THE SONG "WAR PIGS." LOTS OF ROCK AND ESPECIALLY NEW WAVE MUSIC IS FILLED WITH SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES AND PROPHECY FROM GOD/CHRIST WHO ARE THE SAME. YOU WILL FIND THE PROOF OF THIS IN ACTS 2:17-21 IN THE BIBLE...

They just smell that way."

@@DavidTheRossRIP to him. Alabama n wants to be free
To me ,he is a bright star in the dark sky ! A great man , a great soldier ! General MacArthur.
It's the reason that Harry Truman sacked him.
@parlang7235, Thank you for your kind words of my great grandfather ♥️🇺🇲
Dug out Doug.
Such poetic and profound thoughts from one of our greatest soldiers. Young students ought to spend a day reflecting on the meaning of these words: "The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." God bless General Douglas MacArthur, those who served before him, and those after.
I was a 10-year-old girl living at West Point when Gen. MacArthur came to West Point to give this speech and do one more review of the cadets - riding around the parade ground standing in a jeep. My parents were there with the movie camera taking movies that I still have. I was down the street riding my bike. I saw the government limousines approaching and got off my bike and stood at attention, as we were taught to do. The limousines passed by me and I saw the general sitting in the back seat of one of them. I was surprised at how old and frail he looked, and dressed in a civilian suit. He looked at me and I looked at him. He looked sad and I felt like his eyes were conveying to me that no matter how high you rise up in life… in the end you are old and frail like everyone else. That realization influenced me throughout my entire life and helped me make decisions.
please consider sharing your film if that day, I am sure many people interested in history would appreciate seeing it
Gave me goosebumps all over and some tears in my eyes, a remarkable Man, a true American
Remarkable speech, given without notes. I believe it is one of the greatest speeches in American history. - DFR78

@davidrich@3613 , thank you for your kind words of my great grandfather ♥️🇺🇲
General MacArthur & his father had both earned the Medal of Honor, his during WW 1.
No he won his for actions in the Philippine's at the start of WW2--- by then I think he had 6 silver stars.
OP was talking about when MacArthur was put in for the Medal of Honor for his actions in WWI which Pershing himself denied
@@JayhawksH I agree with Gen. Pershing.
That was an amazing video-brought tears. Made me proud to be an American…🇺🇸
I am a veteran and High School English teacher. Listening to this, in preparation for an AP English assignment, had brought tears to my eyes. What a soldier!
A majestic icon. A rare uncommon individual. Strongly recommend General MacArthur' memoir entitled "Reminiscences" -- a poignant revelation.
AMEN, Blissjoy825, AMEN.
I will buy it, thx for idea!
Thanks for liberating Ph and for visiting our city .. Thanks US military for freedom.
I saw Gen. MacArthur in person when he made a sentimental journey to the Philippines sometime in early 1960. I was a high student at that time. A true hero to the Filipinos.
RIP MacArthur from France.
My grandfather F.F. Longley was First Captain of the Corps in 1902 and manager of that baseball team with MacArthur on it, when they went down to Annapolis and "Beat the middies" (according to his copy of that photo.
How do we honor. We Vote, We support, we live to honor the Fallon. We are Americans. God bless this nation.
I love Douglas MacArthur.
The best soldier ever.
The only one who knew what it was like to be a soldier.
He was a soldier who acted on his beliefs throughout his life.
I was commissioned through Army ROTC , and graduated from college as a Distinguished Military Graduate and entered the Regular Army in January of 1986. I receive a copy of The Army Officers Guide, I believe it was the 42rd edition, I don't remember. But what I do remember is that this West Point speech by General MacArthur was at the beginning sort of like the prologue of that book. There was no you tube back then or a way to hear it in his own words, but I read it to myself more than once and it was an emotional experience but also a reminder of the weight of leadership. When I finally heard his words many years ago, WOW! If I were one of those young cadets in the audience at West Point in 1962, it would have been an experience I would have remembered for the rest of my life. I am sure many of then drew on that experience and everything else when 3 years later they found themselves in the Vietnam War!
His words so true, so pointed, have no impact on those who lead and/or think they will lead; tough, very tough times await us.
When I was in basic training at Ft. Jackson ,SC my platoon sergeant came into the barracks and looked at us and said " General MacArthur died today " .
I have listened to this address to many times to count. As a military man US Army Sergeant 1982-1986 Hanau, Germany and Ft Sill, Oklahoma brings tears to my eyes
Up and down the line, his dedication and skill will be felt forever.
What an inspiring message! It is echoing in the ears.
One of greatest speeches in history by great American
This video is most amazing touching and so American DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY. IT so honest and at the time is telling us the importance of our military men and women's as " In the evening of my memories I come back To West Point always their echoes and re echoes; Duty, Honor, Country" What a Patriot a real one. Thank you for this great video. I will forever remember those words. A true hero a true American.
A Military Genius, of Greatness.
Profound,...and that's all I can say about this episode...
Thus, a discourse becomes a poem. This oratory is dramatic and divinely inspired.
His speech is truly an inspiration to me. My grandfather served under him in Korea, he served in Korea after MacArthur was relieved and Ridgeway took his place. He remained in Korea till the cease fire, and when I was kid all the way up until he passed, he always talked about McArthur his tactics and what he did in Korea and of course his speech. This one along with his return to the Philippines and the surrender of the Japanese aboard the USS Missouri.
In fact... he and I listened to this very speech for the last time before he passed, I can tell you he really did felt the Sense of Duty Honor and Country. I always play this to remember him and MacArthur. I still salute him to this very day and I always honor my grandfather with the oath of Duty Honor Country. ⚔️🎩
Through his words and way of speech he is our man I love.

I recall hearing this speech as a young soldier while stationed in West Germany. These three words Duty, Honor, Country stuck with me throughout my twenty plus years of military service. After retiring from military service those three little words Duty, Honor, Country still ring my in heart and mind today at the age of 71 as clearly as they did the first time I ever heard them spoken by one of our Nation’s greatest generals. 🇺🇸
Hoorah! Duty, Honor, and Country! US Army 1965 to 67.

Like Churchill, another great leader, a sublime gift with words. Wow. I saved and sent to my grandson, completing his 3rd year at West Point and have listened several times.🎖
Sorry, but you haven't any idea who Dugout Dug was. He kept an underage concubine in Manila, and gave himself a Medal of Honor for leaving 70thoussnd American at the mercy of the Japanese in Manila. He was fired by President Harry Truman for good cause. He was despised by almost every Marine, Sailor, and soldier in the Pacific Theater.
@CarolynRWall thank you for your kind words of my family , Winston Churchill and Commander Douglas MacArthur , my great grandfather ♥️🇺🇲
Churchill was a disaster that bankrupted the UK, killed thousands of soldiers in his failed naval landing in Turkey, and a genocidal jerk that created the Bengal famine in India. It's unfitting to compare that British warmonger to MacArthur.
My best friend was in this Gregory peck movie scene
Hand salute.

until today this great man is not yet remembered in films, but i thank the few of us who are here, who are grateful to this genius, this generous Archangel 🙏🇺🇲🇵🇭
how in God's name can West Point allow this video to be interrupted by ads?
It's UA-cam.
I have Google Premium, no ads.
A bigger question: How do they allow woke bull shit into the curriculum. MacArthur is screaming from his White Cross " Duty-Honor-Country".
My thoughts too
Because america is cool; but money is cooler. 🙂
Jack Maxey - If you searched this you are definitely too wise, not to pay for UA-cam premium my dude!
I have been paying for it for years. It’s so worth it my good man.
Speechless. ♡
More important now than ever before. Our weapons and our ability to wage war is unmatched, but the hearts and souls of our people have been corrupted and degraded.
Respect from Korea🇰🇷
General MacArthur should be awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature, his speech and writing are better than Churchill!
Did you happen to know that MacArthur and Churchill were distant cousins? I feel blessed that they are both MY distant cousins (9th), through a woman named Sarah Barney. 🌹
Great America! Salute great US army!
My first time hearing this speech . It brought me to tears and gave me chills .
Beautiful!
So beautiful!!
So Beautiful! Respect ✊
Amazing
A moving tribute to General MacArthur. Here is the unedited version of what the General said about Duty, Honor, Country: "The unbelievers will say they are but words, but a slogan, but a flamboyant phrase. Every pedant, every demagogue, every cynic, every hypocrite, every troublemaker, and I am sorry to say, some others of an entirely different character, will try to downgrade them even to the extent of mockery and ridicule." Given the General's repeated emphasis on the core values of Duty, Honor and Country, and -- above all -- his prophesy regarding the "unbelievers," it would be disappointing if West Point removed those words from its Mission Statement.
One of the greatest Americans of all time. That speech, in its slow, melodic cadence, is riveting. May we embrace generals like MacArthur, Eisenhower, Patton and Bradley rather than the woke embarrassments we have today. RIP, General, you are missed.
Amen. Military personnel are now mentally ill cross dressing sodomites and Pedophiles.

The greatest Arkansas native ever.
Now i know why his charisma was so famous in the Philippines
On this October day, 15 days after terrorists began a second holocaust against the free and democratic Jewish people of Israel, General of the Army MacArthur's Duty, Honor Country speech echoes true for not only the men and women of our armed forces, but for the courageous young men and when who are, as I write this, once again in human history fighting evil.
I can not help but think how deeply disturbed must be the spirits of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines of the Allied nations who fought so valiantly against evil during the Second World War. How, when that unprecedented slaughter of millions to wipe evil from the earth finished, the men and women of the free countries of this world pledged that never again would we allow such evil to be tolerated.
Yet here we are, evil never ends, it is only beaten back for a time. And we are in such a time now when evil is rising again, and the forces of good, justice, and freedom must beat down the minions on evil. Israel is one such battleground, and how the free world cries out for leaders like MacArthur, Patton, Bradley, Nimitz, Halsey, Harmon (Norwich), Cunningham, Tedder, Montgomery, and countless more.
But I have always believed, as General MacArthur so eloquently puts it, in the spirit, courage and devotion of the American man at arms. While I pray fervently that this war will not expand, that the free world will dominate the forces of evil by other means, I know in my heart that the men and women of America's armed forces will fight and once again beat back this growing evil.
God Speed to all our forces and God bless this nation.

You've removed Duty, Honor, Country from your mission statement? Really? That's tragic and pathetic at the same time. Disgraceful!

General Macarthur served our country to the best of his abilities. Certainly a complex man and many would say he was difficult to serve under. However, look at the POS we now have in General Miley, certainly the comparison begs forgiveness and is found to be nigh impossible to comprehend.

@@robertisham5279 It's a well known fact, every biography mentions that.
There is no better speech honoring the ordinary soldier than one borne out of experience in battle, MacArthur had lots of it....Eisenhower did not....
Eisenhower was just a military bureaucrat, a glorified clerk in uniform.
The BGM is very unnecessary.
And today, the "new" west point wants these three words removed from their legacy
Why honor Fallon? What did he ever do for America
Some Asian accents?
Most of that class went to Vietnam
I wish that this speech could be sent to Prince Harry although I don't think that it will any impression.

Your is a tactful and accurate response. Many hold him in contempt.
i love this speech !!! but GO NAVY BEAT ARMY !!!!!!!!
A great irator, a miilitary genius, not so much.
"Duty, Honor, Country"... . West Point impressed that upon its cadets. How is it then that Mike Pompeo, West Point Class 0f 1986, graduated first in his class and utterly disregarded the academy's honor code and the oath he took to serve the Nation and protect the Constitution. As US Secretary of State, he served at the pleasure of Donald Trump, facilitating the trashing of that same Constitution and all that is held honorable. How did it happen that none of West Point's hopeful and demanding Honor Code was internalized by an officer, first in his class, who revealed his utter corruption.
As a young man, I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. I understood that it was time to stand for something. The motto of the Army is,”This We’ll Defend”. This nation, its people, and the Constitution. Those who have turned their backs on their sworn oath are without honor. They are not worthy of the heritage they may claim. That they have made common cause with a coward, bully, and a moral
failure is disgraceful. Strike their
names from the rolls!
I guess not everybody got the message.

MacArthur's loyalties leading up to WW2 were to the President of the Philippines. MacArthur delayed a proper defense of the islands even after the Japanese had attacked repeatedly. He did this because of the fear of the Philippine President that any aggression by the U.S. forces would lead to an occupation. By the time MacArthur acted to implement the U.S. defensive plan (WPO-3) it was too little too late, and with no time to stock arms nor provisions for those retreating to Corregidor & the Battan peninsula.
To make matters worse, MacArthur fled the islands (ostensibly under orders, though no commander would be faulted for refusing such orders when the force was actively engaged in battle and desperately in need of leadership). About the time the remnants of MacArthur's command surrendered and began 3+ years of torture and abuse at the hands of the Japanese, MacArthur was being awarded the Medal of Honor for what amounts to horrible leadership and abandoning his command to their fate.
Between this, and MacArthur's orders to fire upon the Bonus Army (Veterans of WW1) in 1932, I can see no reason whatsoever to "honor" Douglas MacArthur. He was a self-serving, self-promoting pompous man, who refused to ever accept any responsibility for his part in the thousands of deaths of those who were unlucky enough to serve under him.
Well said, but it is a great speech . . . and should be left at that.
Even if you put the best general incharge of bataan and corregidir they cannot win tve battle because of lack of supplies .they can only delay the defeat.at least at that yime you must save your highest ranking leader like the king at all cost
And here we are again. Except trump can't strung to sentences together.
@@jasonwiley798Trump did nothing wrong.
He violated his own advice. Don't get into a land war in asia. We would be well to remember those words today.
General MacArthur was involved in Asian land wars in WW2 and Korea, which ended in 1945 and 1953 respectively with a Japanese defeat and South Korea kept out of the hands of the Kim dynasty. One wonders how MacArthur "violated his own advice" in the 1940s and 1950s when he didn't offer it to President Kennedy until 1961.
