I, for one, have seen this issue for years!!! I'm sure I am not alone in this. I'm glad someone who can reach the public at large is bringing it to light. I've watched my own grandkids be effected by this. It's heartbreaking.

I work in a school, and I would say no, most kids are online for hours and hours a day, from grades 4 to 8 and on. It increases each year.

I bought the book and read it, I thought it was a great book and I am sure he is not right about everything. That being said he makes an honest and analytical approach to solving this difficult problem.

What an annoying moderator/interviewer, wasting time attempting to “falsify” (and how well is that going?) JH’s excellent, well researched work and insights, instead of exploring the findings as a “friendly interviewer”, that inspires dialogue.

Hmmmm... I viewed it differently. There will be people that encounter this video and will have those thoughts and questions. I think she wasn't exactly aggressive so much as making sure those with an alternative view or easy to see argument to his research would be faced with his response to those. The parents or people that need to see this video and become aware of a need to address this problem aren't the choir but those who disagree. They could sit there and mentally debunk everything he says with those biased ideas or just tune out if he's unencumbered to just speak on his findings, but by giving voice to the counterpoints they are more likely to stay engaged and open their eyes to this information.

What a bunch of garbage! Young people today have bigger issues than social media and overprotective parents. Massive wealth inequality, corporate hegemony, government corruption, housing and job insecurity, high energy and food prices, high taxes, stagnant wages, expensive housing, inflation, climate change, pollution, global war, social disintegration, abuse, neglect, exploitation and indifference. The luck ones come from loving homes that are financially sound however most of them do not.
What a bunch of ninnies, what have they got be worried about! They need to suck it up and stop whining! Everything's fine. Work harden and all your dreams will come true. Well, maybe for some us. The dystopian horror that awaits us is only the stuff of science fiction. Nothing to see here. Move along.

What is wrong with this interviewer? Why does she think her only job is to 'push' and be devil's advocate and make herself look smarter? And her comment 'most children I know don't have unrestricted use' is ridiculous on so many levels? Her snobbiness and disconnect from normal people is showing.

Little side note, for Mr. Haidt, on the last comment about the lack of fear in videogames. There can be a lot of fear in videogames too, but it's more psychological type than the fear of a fall.

It's hard to limit kids' use because tech companies are making social media and video games addictive. It's like putting a kid in a casino. It turns them into ravenous gambling addicts. They scream and throw stuff when you take their iPad.

We need to factor in the role of the guardian adult. Modern parenting is more complex but within the environment, adults need to be choiceful about when to introduce gadgets and tv to children as well as the time of which they are allowed. This is not the era to make children "happy". It's ever more important to be making conscious decisions. Companies are hollow, they cannot bear the brunt of everything.

And should add, in my experience and my way of using YT, I have the impression, comments (ie. the interaction part) on yt is perhaps the most intelligent or least dum of all forms of social media. Disagree?

The wealthy kids at ski resorts are doing fine. They coalesce at the terrain park & film each other doing crazy tricks, then post it to social media: Lincoln Loops, Misty Flips, Mute grabs, 3, 5, 9 spins. With easy access to video they can see their progress immediately & share their experiences. Now let's just pause a moment for all the children responsible for the textiles that we're wearing.

I think he means the fears connected to the real life, such as killings or injuries in playing video games don’t cause one’s physical pains as consequences……so no fear of physical sufferings experienced by the person, who will develop different perspectives and life experiences towards fighting, killings and other human sufferings…..coming from all sorts of conflicts.

Anxiety comes from channels like this and journalists who do nothing but stress everyone out about alleged problems all the time. You don't give people a break to breath and to return to their personal reality which has not a single one of the alleged problems that they are constantly bombarded with by news journalism. People have none of the problems in their personal lives they just carry the burden you give them with your complaints and issues and agendas and ideas. You all can't just leave people alone to enjoy their life you have to stress them out all the time. You've even managed to convince them that they need to pay attention to issues and journalism for absolutely no reason when its not relevant to them at all. Everyone needs to take a long break from journalism. Block all sources so you can at least enjoy your life from now onward.
